Is your kid in a great school?

Greetings! Dear families, In Minneapolis there are schools that help all students realize their potential & schools that don’t. While great schools in North Minneapolis & the greater Phillips neighborhoods are limited, these high-performing schools have nearly 2x the academic growth & 4x the proficiency rates as low-performing schools. What’s more, 59% of students from these high-performing schools persist in college, while only 8% from low-performing schools do. For Minneapolis kids historically underserved, great schools can be a pathway to success in life. Explore our list of “Changing-the-odds schools” on page 7. Unfortunately, dozens of low-performing schools fail to meet students’ needs, leaving many unable to read, write or do math at grade level. To combat a community of schools that fail to meet kids’ needs, Family Advocates provide families with personalized 1:1 support for those who feel they’ve been misled into enrolling in a low-performing school & want to get out! As you explore, learn & act upon the information contained on these pages, there’s comfort in knowing Family Advocates are on your side. Contact a Family Advocate at 612-567-6810, FamilyAdvocates@MinneapolisSchoolFinder.org or click on ‘Request Family Advocate’ when you visit MinneapolisSchoolFinder.org. #PossibleTogether,

Changing-the-odds These schools are leading the city in providing all kids – no matter their background – a great education. This list is based on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment, or “MCA” – our state’s tool to understand how well schools are educating kids. Students at these schools who come from a low-income background are doing better than the Minneapolis Public Schools average &/or are growing at a faster rate than expected. Students at changing-the-odds schools have higher rates of graduation and college enrollment. Policymakers, advocates, principals & teachers look to the MCA to understand how students, as a whole, meet state standards & our ability to close “opportunity gaps” across our city & state.

school! At great schools, educators prioritize relationships with students

Great schools demonstrate that all kids can learn & thrive

What to look for: » Teacher-student relationships matter – there’s respect & they’re constructive

What to look for: » Students read & do math on grade level … students who are behind catch up

» Students feel excited by the content offered & learning environment

» Learning focuses on real-world experiences – like social justice or present-day jobs

» Social emotional learning (managing emotions, healthy relationships, empathy) & cultural understanding are integrated into all learning – & measured

» Students learn things of interest to them – passions or hobbies related to their dreams/goals

Questions to ask: Do students feel connected 1 to school, including teachers & school policies? In what ways? How do you reflect my family’s culture – for example, overall environment, teachers of color or textbooks? If you don’t, are you willing to do so?

2

Questions to ask: How do you communicate 1 academic & non-academic goals to families throughout the school year? Are students making adequate progress? Does learning integrate academics, cultural understanding & social emotional learning?

2

How does the school partner with parents to ensure their students are on a path to success?

3

9

Pick your school 1

Identify schools that offer the features most-important to you:

» Academic performance » Demographics » Culture & climate » Programs – before, during & after the school day » Hours & transportation

2

Tour 2-3 schools – here are things to look for:

The school… » .Is able to accommodate your child’s learning style & interests » Connects academics to real-life skills » Has an environment that can connect with your child’s culture, race & ethnicity » Retains great teachers (ask about teachers’ backgrounds) » Follows discipline policies that are fair for all students, regardless of their race or ethnicity (ask about their suspension & expulsion rates) » Offers programs that are of interest to your child » Has opportunities for parents to engage & get involved in the school 10

3

Apply to a few schools & enroll in 1 school:

» District schools (public schools run by the district) have a priority enrollment deadline of February 8, 2019. Submit a ‘School Request Form’ when entering your child into Pre-K, kindergarten or transferring schools. » Charter schools (public schools run by a non-profit) have their own applications – for the schools you’re interested in, look for their application on their website or call them directly. » Independent schools (private schools) have their own applications – for the schools you’re interested in, look for their application on their website or call them directly.

¡Saludos!
