TRANSFORM YOUR TEACHING STYLE: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND CREATIVITY IN THE CLASSROOM 5 – 9 February 2018 Teacher training seminar within the framework of the ERASMUS+ Program

1. Introduction This course has been developed for teachers who want to transform their teaching style by enhancing their emotional intelligence and creativity skills in the classroom. What are the essential skills students need in order to thrive? While education focuses on cognitive skills, research shows that social and emotional skills are also essential. Even if the school has not instituted a formal program in support of social and emotional learning, there are plenty of activities teachers can initiate right in their own classroom. Understanding that an emotionally intelligent teacher is the first step towards an emotionally intelligent classroom will lead to change in due time, as students will respond to sustained emotionally intelligent role-modelling Creativity is the process of tapping onto one’s authenticity and producing, as a natural result of it, amazingly unique and valuable thoughts, actions, and emotions. Sadly, education still tends to uniform thought and imagination from a very early age. As Ken Robinson says "Creativity is as important in education as literacy" Creativity is the essence of teaching and learning and in order to develop creative learning approaches, it is crucial that teachers are prepared to become reflective practitioners able to discern how a teaching method, an attitude, or an activity can stifle or trigger creativity in their students. Instructors who adopt a student-centred approach to instruction and increase opportunities for student engagement, which then helps everyone more successfully to develop their personal competencies and skills.

The course evaluation will thus be continuous and personalized, according to the course program.

Participants to this workshop will learn how to create an atmosphere in which students and teachers like to learn and grow together as an educational community.

4. Structured Course Programme The duration of the structured training course is 25 hours from Monday to Friday with both theoretical and practical contents (with a priority to the latter, in the sense that theoretical contents will come up during the course as an effect, so to say, of experience and experimentation… first comes experience and then all the necessary words about it).

Modules of the training course:

-

HOW TO BECOME A (MORE) CREATIVE TEACHER? Since you are already in the educational domain, chances are that you are already trying to work by projects, apply inter-age groups and techniques, gamification and every other concept in the field… These new approaches / techniques help you be more creative, indeed… but… is that all about creativity? Is creativity a technique? In this workshop we’ll focus on creativity as a “HOW”, rather than as a “WHAT”, because how to make it happen makes the difference.

-

STOP TALKING ABOUT EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND START APPLYING IT Most likely, you have heard a lot about Emotional Intelligence (EI) and yet it may seem to you either as a foreign concept, or else like a slogan that no one tells you how to put in place. In this workshop, you will be invited to use emotional intelligence, strategize with it, model student –teacher interactions and find ways to boost your intrapersonal and interpersonal strengths as well as ways to work on your weaker sides. Are you up for it?

-

TURN YOUR TEACHING STYLE INTO A MOTIVATING STUDENT-CENTERED ONE If you’d ask anybody if their system, school, or classroom was studentcentred they would say: “yes, how could it be otherwise?” But the fact is that a student-centred school or system would be quite different from what we most often experience in our schools and high schools… a student-centred system or classroom focuses on all that which fosters student-teacher bonding. This, as we know, results in greater teacher and student motivation, efficacy, and what is more important; happiness!

-

TRANSFORM YOUR CLASS MANAGEMENT APPROACH AND SKILLS This workshop wants to offer you a new approach that aims at fostering your and your students’ well-being; so, meditation and mindfulness will be part of it. We will also show you the importance of resorting to a processcentred approach that takes some pressure out of our goal-oriented system. This workshop will encourage you to look at the invisible in each one of your students and in yourself as a teacher… teachers go through a lot which they hardly ever get the time to process… unless they learn how to do it on the spot.

NB: Order and/or contents could be adapted, modified, reduced and extended, according to the participants’ profiles, in order to better cater to their needs and interests.

About the coach:

Workshop in Barcelona with psychopedagogist and Instructional coach Anand Torrents Alcaraz

“I graduated in Philosophy in 1994, and since then I have travelled extensively and worked in various countries. Since 2006, I am back at home, in Catalonia. I have been a teacher myself at all levels of the educational system in my country and abroad. I have worked as a philosophy, languages, social science teacher…. Something that has greatly influenced my teaching and coaching style is the fact that I have worked for more than 20 years as a Yoga and meditation teacher as well. I became a Gestalt therapist and couple counsellor too and got a Master’s degree in Psychopedagogy in 2015. In the last years, I have chosen to apply my knowledge and skills to the work with adults; more specifically with teachers. So, I have designed a flexible and adaptive training program for teachers that aims at drawing the best of each participant. After being a teacher long time myself, I know the ropes of the job and what educators need; it is a job for the brave and I am glad to be one more support to them.”
