ERASMUS + ABSENTEEISM AND EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING PREVENTION SKILLS FOR TEACHERS Context and goals: Early school leaving is rampant in some European countries. Many students complain that schools have become disconnected from life and that it is not meaningful anymore. Something must obviously be done. This course wants to address not just the what, but the how of the solutions to be implemented. Format: in-campus intensive. Duration: Five-day course.

Overall pedagogical aims: The main objective of the theoretical and practical course is to prepare participants to work effectively with: • • • •

Understanding the difference between old and new approaches to the management and definition of phenomenon of Early School Leaving (ESL) and school absenteeism. Improve trainees’ knowledge in the field of early school leaving, provide theoretical background, data, enable sharing of good practices and get hands on experience Becoming aware of the emotional dimension to school absenteeism and ESL. Learning techniques to be applied in classroom settings that will promote healthy emotional bonding between students and prevent ESL / absenteeism.

Target audience: subject teachers, class teachers, educationists, pedagogists, school psychologists and psychopedagogists, educational planners and educational policy makers. All those professional connected to education, and specifically to secondary and VET schools, but also those working in the second primary school phase (fifth and sixth grade) where most often school absenteeism or early school leaving originates.

Module 1: Dealing with ESL and absenteeism o Understanding dynamics and characteristics of early school leaving and absenteeism o Causes of early school leaving and absenteeism o The different stages of early school leaving and absenteeism and how to deal with each stage individually o ESL prevention: Prevention, intervention and compensation measures Module 2: Applying emotional intelligence and multiple intelligence o The nature and function of emotions o Interpersonal Intelligence o Intrapersonal Intelligence o Correlations of multiple intelligences and emotional intelligence o Innovative teaching methods

Increased understanding of various causes and consequences of early school leaving Learn to motivate, guide and effectively assess students at risk of ESL, decrease low achievement in basic competences, encourage peer exchange and active participation within educational environment and society. Understanding and exploring the world of parents Improved ability to motivate and engage students Ability to recognise students that are at risk of dropout and take necessary measurement Learn meditation techniques and stress management tools

Metodology The course will base on learning by experience and addressing practical and real day-to-day cases and situations. The teacher (a trained professional therapist and coach) will support trainees and will help them in dealing with any kind of issue that may arise during the learning process. The teacher will also provide feedback and encourage participation in each person’s own style and capacity. The teacher will perform an individualized follow-up to ensure that all participants are engaged and motivated to acquire and develop the techniques and new professional skills that the course offer equip them with. The course evaluation will thus be continuous and personalized, according to the course program.
