We are very fortunate to have an excellent ongoing partnership with the City of Pittsburgh for the betterment of the four regional parks. The Parks Conservancy works side by side with City employees in all our projects that are supported with private donations. The City’s work in Frick, Schenley, Highland and Riverview Parks is funded by the Allegheny Regional Asset District. Nearly two-thirds of the Conservancy’s annual operating budget is covered by private donations.

Allegheny County and various City Council members have funded volunteer programs of the Parks Conservancy that focus on ecological restoration of natural areas, as well as flower and tree plantings.

In 2008 the tradition of funding from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania continued with support for major projects by the Parks Conservancy. These included: restoring the Riverview Park Chapel Shelter and Landscape, planning for the new Environmental Center at Frick Park, ongoing Parks Management and Maintenance, Parks Conservancy operations, and the 2008 International Urban Parks Conference. Many thanks to our state and federal legislators who worked tirelessly to bring $3 million in federal funds for upcoming trail and signage improvements in all four regional parks.

Dear Friend of Pittsburgh Parks, 2008 was a year of great accomplishments.

Capital Projects Our public-private partnership with the City of Pittsburgh resulted in the completion of two capital projects in 2008. The historic Chapel Shelter and landscape were completely restored at Riverview Park, and the community celebrated at a ribbon cutting in June. The Mary E. Schenley Memorial Fountain, A Song to Nature, by Victor Brenner was restored—and permanently illuminated for the first time since the original dedication in 1918.

Schenley Plaza and Schenley Park Café and Visitor Center Schenley Plaza, in its third exciting season, offered 200 free public programs from April through November, including the WYEP Summer Music Festival and Squonk Opera’s Astro-Rama Pittsburgh premiere, as well as a host of smaller events such as lunchtime concerts, yoga lessons, flea markets and Kids Days. The Schenley Park Café and Visitor Center continues to provide a lovely and relaxing setting for contemplation of the parks and is also available for private events.

Volunteer Days and Daffodil Project Our staff, in concert with the City, also worked with organizations and community groups on 20+ volunteer days to improve the ecological health of our parks through tree plantings, trash clean ups, and invasive species removal.

We launched the Pittsburgh Daffodil Project, an ongoing effort to plant a large section of daffodils in one or more of the parks annually so that eventually our City will be blanketed in yellow blooms each spring.

Special Events in the Community Crucial support for the work of parks restoration resulted from several special events led by terrific community volunteers. PNC presented the 10th annual Spring Hat Luncheon to benefit our work in Frick Park in May. PNC also presented the inaugural Children’s Carousel Tea in May at Schenley Plaza. UPMC Health Plan presented the zany and exquisite Madcap Masquerade party at Schenley Plaza for the first time, transforming the park with stunning lighting and backdrops. And the blockbuster 2008 International Urban Parks Conference, Body and Soul: Parks and the Health of Great Cities, in September brought 602 participants from 5 continents, 10 countries and 31 states to Pittsburgh to discuss how important parks are to a metro region. We heard rave reviews from participants who were dazzled by our city’s transformation from grey, industrial landscape to green metropolis.

In 2008, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy celebrated 12 years of work in ecological restoration, building and landscape improvements, education, and free public programming. The tremendous support we receive each year from our community and cooperation from government makes all this work possible.

The restoration of the Mary E. Schenley Memorial Fountain is a simple, classic treatment that connects the fountain area to Schenley Plaza and gives this valuable piece of public art the emphasis it deserves. The art of Victor Brenner’s sculpture is highlighted as a timeless memorial through nighttime illumination, and new landscaping has made the area more welcoming.

A Song to Nature was commissioned in 1911 and dedicated in 1918 to honor Mary Schenley’s gift of land to create Schenley Park, and after a national design competition, Victor David Brenner was selected as the artist.

After six years of fundraising and three years of work, the Riverview Park Chapel Shelter re-opened to the public at the Riverview Park Heritage Festival on June 7. Restored to its original design and featuring modern amenities, the Chapel Shelter effectively balances historic authenticity with the needs of today’s park users. Visitors can once again rent the facility from the City of Pittsburgh for special events, or stroll through its well-maintained landscape on a walk through the park. A new trail connects the Chapel Shelter to the woods below, and the adjacent hillside is once again teeming with a diverse array of native plants.

The Highland Park Entry Garden became even more welcoming in 2008 with the addition of four decorative urns. The urns were generously donated by Roy and Susie Dorrance in memory of Susie’s mother, Mrs. Emma O. Sharp.

Mrs. Sharp adored Highland Park and supported the Parks Conservancy’s work to restore it.

Schenley Plaza is the place to be for free activities that appeal to people of all backgrounds and age groups.

This was the Plaza’s most exciting and jam-packed season yet, with the WYEP Summer Music Festival attracting the largest crowds to date in June, and the Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights and Squonk Opera’s Astro-Rama lighting up the night in October. All season long, regular programming such as the Sundae Flea Market, Kids Days, lunchtime concerts, soccer clinics with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and free yoga classes brought people into the park. The lawn was often full of people enjoying the sun, free wireless Internet, and a snack from one of four wonderful kiosks.

The Schenley Park CafĂŠ and Visitor Center provided a relaxing park gathering spot during its seventh season, with casual lunches, free wireless access, park information, and spotless restrooms. Casual lunches, free wireless access, park information and spotless restrooms are on site daily. Free events included the UPMC Health Plan Healthy Living Lecture Series on Thursdays in spring and fall and the Sundays in the Park concert series on the outdoor terrace from July through October.

The charming building is also available for private event rentals such as weddings, meetings and parties by calling Bartho Nietsch at 412-687-1800.

The Conservancy's Parks Management and Maintenance staff works closely with the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works to perform woodland management and daily restoration work in the parks. Crews work together to remove invasive plants, repair damaged trails, control erosion and storm water runoff, and plant and water native trees and shrubs. The cumulative effect of this work is a park system with a wider variety of plants, better habitat for animals and birds, and a safer, more beautiful experience for park users.

The Conservancy also coordinates with community groups to provide volunteer resources. Projects such as the “circle gardens,� pictured here in Riverview Park, were designed by the City and the Conservancy, with volunteers stepping in to plant flowers, stabilize the hillside, and spread grass seed.

2008 saw a continued investment from the community in their parks, with an increasing number of companies and organizations holding group volunteer days. Hundreds of volunteers put in several thousand hours planting trees and shrubs, building trails, cleaning up litter, removing invasive species, and stabilizing slopes.

The Urban EcoSteward program also continued to grow, with over 100 dedicated participants enlisted to provide long-term care to areas in the parks. In-depth trainings throughout the year taught EcoStewards to identify native wildflowers, control hillside erosion, remove invasive plants, and collect native seeds for planting.

Daffodil Project: Schenley Park’s Bartlett Playground greeted visitors with an abundance of spring cheer this year, with 5,000 new daffodils bordering the area. Last fall, an additional 7,850 bulbs went into the ground, completing a garden bed that will provide a splash of color every April. The Bartlett Street site was the first of many areas in the parks that will receive mass plantings over the next several years as part of the Pittsburgh Daffodil Project, a partnership between the Parks Conservancy and the Penn State Cooperative Extension.
