Senior Issue 2013
Class of 2013 leaves its legacy at Maine East “Maybe it’s only us.” So said Simon to the other boys in Lord of the Flies, speaking of a beast that had found them on the island and that had haunted them as shadows overtook the grounds. In this sense, the phrase suggests the tragic – that the worst of the world is within us – but I see in it an application to the senior class, a “maybe it’s only us” to describe the legacy we’ve made, and the future we’re entering. Every year, the senior class hopes to write a legacy that will allow them to look upon their yearbooks proudly, and upon their school with accomplishment, knowing they’ve made some impression on its history. The thing is, I think we’ve done just that. Coming into Maine East with fresh faces, moving through a sophomore slump that later became looked upon as only a mild case of what was to come when the senioritis epidemic hit, rising in the ranks as upperclassmen junior year, and marching into this final year, we’ve become something more than just a group of students. With memories more easily recorded in this age than ever before, every event Instagrammed, Facebooked, Tweeted about and more, everything is chronologized, but the emotions aren’t so easily hidden as a tag on a photo removed. We’ve survived floods, smothering blankets of snow, AP tests,
and long night after long night of the work of a week crammed into a night because you just couldn’t miss that marathon of Jersey Shore and you could so totally finish in an hour what your teacher advised you to work on the whole week. Maybe it was only we who were able to think of a senior prank that somehow convinced students to wake up at 5 a.m. on a Friday morning to mob teachers’ cars and gather money that would be donated to charity. Maybe it was only we who raised newspapers to read in disinterest as the class-that-comes-after-thesophomores cheered during the assembly, or that came down with a classwide illness the Friday of May 24th that was only to be treated with a trek down to the beach, eradicated with a feast and a barbeque, games of volleyball and soccer, and laughter and maudlin remarks in the unobstructed sun. Soon, all too soon, we’ve begrudgingly only just realized, we’ll have to renounce our authorship to the class below us for them to record their journey into the annals of Maine East. We’ll have to see for the last time a great majority of people who we were so used to seeing every day, across from us in math class, leading our row in gym class, beside us in English class, and among us in the senior class. We’ll move on to college or elsewhere to greet new faces as they mesh along the old ones in
our memories, facing the world with the education an amazing staff was able to both instill and foster within us. Maybe it’s only us that the world must depend on to face its still unforeseen challenges, but there’s no maybe in the notion that we are prepared for anything that should come before us. Congratulations, Class of 2013 – we’ve done it. ––Jasmina Basic
Instead of a vandalous or tasteless senior prank, several students organized a group to collect “parking fee” donations from faculty on Tuesday, May 28. The money collected went to the Student Based Health Center.

Mrs. Wachowski says goodbye to Maine East
By Emily Lapinski
In our society, time is often a self-centered notion. People are quick to preserve it and hesitant to share it. In order for us to bestow this gift upon others, we often search for a reward or lure to be able to justify ourselves. Mrs. Wachowski, the department chair for Applied Arts & Technology, has offered 33 years of quality time and is sadly ending her Maine East career this year. Her devotion and time over the past 33 years have helped create significant changes and improvements within the department. “Mrs. Wachowski has been instrumental in expanding the Health Care related classes,” said Ms. Becky Stewart, who will take over as the new AAT department chair in 2013-14. “The nursing program has doubled in size, allowing students to become certified as Nursing
Care Technicians and shadow nurses on many floors at Lutheran General Hospital.” Wachowski also developed the LEEP program (Advocate Lutheran General Education to Employment), which is an awesome opportunity for students to be mentored by the executive team of the hospital. Mrs. Wachowski was also a part of the leadership team for implementing Project Lead the Way and served as a strong supporter of the student groups DECA, SKILLS, and FCCLA. “She always has the students’ best interests in mind,” said Stewart. The Majority of high school students are unaware of what they want to pursue in college. Having all these opportunities to explore different careers is greatly appreciated by the students here at East. Mrs. Wachowski’s selfless contribution of time has brought her a genuine
reward. “I like working with high school students,” she said. “They are part grownups and part kids, full of energy and fun to be around. I am going to miss working with students more than any other part of my job. I am so grateful to have been able to do the work that I wanted to do.” If more people were as quick to give their time to others we would have a lot more good in the world. Time will go by regardless of how you spend it, so why not use it to touch the lives of people around you? Following her retirement Mrs. Wachowski will spend well deserved time doing the things she loves. “I plan to stay at out at the lake house through the color change in the fall,” said Mrs. Wachowski. “I've never been able to do that before and I am excited about it!”
Mrs. Wachowski hopes to travel more in retirement, like this one to Grenada, Spain.
Before summer sets in, give next year some thought By Kevin Gau Before you head off for another adventurous summer, take a moment to think about next school year! One of the things you might consider this summer is getting a head start on your college search – it’s never too early. Here are some other productive summer ideas: • Visit a couple of colleges or universities, either in person or online, to get a feel of what you want to do and where you want to be. • Take some free online courses, like Coursera. • Begin your first summer job. • Search for scholarships. • (Juniors) Prepare for the ACT. • Take some volunteering opportunities. If you are looking for something exciting to do next year, here are three student groups that all hope for new energetic staffs next year: The Pioneer newspaper, Tech Genius, and the LENS yearbook. The Pioneer is what you’re reading right now! It is the student newspaper of Maine East, led by sponsor Mr. Matt Miller and assistant
sponsor Mr. Dave Hessert. The Pioneer covers diverse news taking place around school and the world. It is a great opportunity to develop reporting, writing, photography, and graphic design skills. The Pioneer is always looking for new reporters, writers, photographers, illustrators, and graphic designers, but the best time to join the staff is at the beginning of the school year. The staff meets twice a week and produces a new issue about once a month. See this issue’s staff box for more information The Tech Genius programs is being revamped by Librarian Ms. Morgan and Technology Manager Mr. Cannizzo. The goal is to support all students and staff with a technology helpdesk in the library. If you crave technology, any computer course in the Applied Arts & Technology Department and the A.P. Computer Science in the Math Department will help you soothe your craving. Some of the positions you can obtain in the Tech Genius include Student Tech Genius and Chromebook Support Team. The LENS, Maine East’s yearbook staff, has been publishing a yearbook since the
school was originally called Maine (talk about a “Maine” Tradition!). This coming fall the yearbook staff needs your help! No experience is necessary, just bring a vision, a creative mind, and a friendly motivated heart. All the magic happens in room 112A, the Yearbook Lab. For more information see sponsor Ms. Papanastasopoulos or assistant sponsor Ms. Clifford. The following positions are available: Photographer and Yearbook Photo Editor. On a personal note, I have participated with all three of these organizations this year and they teach me a lot. They involve teaching others, leadership positions, interacting with other students and staff members, and improving your strengths and weaknesses. All these activities can help you prepare for the real world. It’s been an extraordinary adventure for me these past four years here at Maine East. It can be for you, too, if you take the opportunity to try a new task and mix your day with a cup of something new. Remember ... “Adventure is Out There!” May 31, 2013 | THE PIONEER | 3

Last Open Mic Night of 2013 This May’s Open Mic Night was another rousing night that featured MERP, the slam poets, the band Goodenough, and even some cup singing. Students read poems, performed songs, and spoke their minds. MERP, The Maine East Rhythm Project, was one of the highlights of the night. MERP performed three songs at the beginning of the second half. Seniors Gaby Chavez, Ashley Roman, Marwan Abdellataf, and junior Frankie Tillbrook performed their team piece from Louder Than a Bomb. The night included sing alongs and favorite songs. Heartfelt poetry And much congeniality. Alas, we will have to wait Another year for a night so great.

Tech Review: a weekend with Chromebook By Kevin Gau Welcome, Demon Nation, to the last Demon Tech Report of 2012-13! Starting in June 2011, some Maine East students were presented the first Samsung Chromebooks using Chrome OS*, based on the Google Chrome Web Browser. It is a sleek laptop that packs a punch for heavy internet and social media users. The last two weekends in April, I had the privilege of borrowing a Chromebook from the Maine East Technology Department for this review. I had the following: a Chromebook, a charger, and a suitcaselike carrying case. The goal of this test is give you details of this new technology because as everyone knows all District 207 freshman and sophomores will be required to buy a Chromebook instead of physical textbooks. When I opened the Chromebook for the first
time, it took less than 10 seconds to start up. Wow! By the time I opened the lid of the laptop it was already at its login screen. To log into the laptop you must have a Google account – a personal google account or your school gmail account. I used my personal account. Currently the school accounts for students are having an issue syncing with other devices due to restrictions on student accounts, but don’t worry, the District 207 Technology Department should have the issue resolved soon. After logging into my personal Google account, I had to personalize my account using a profile photo and choosing a desktop background. I could use a photo or take one using the webcam, like most laptops and other devices have today. In less than one minute I was already on the web. It can’t get any quicker than that! The Chromebook resembles a Macbook Air in
its silver color and light weight design. It is 0.7 inches thin, weighs 2.42 pounds, and features a picture perfect 11.6’’ display. The device runs on a Samsung 1.7 Ghz* Exynos 5 Dual Processor, the world’s first A-15 Dual Core mobile CPU*, running on 2 Gb* of RAM, and a battery with over 6.5 hours of life. When used to 10% battery life, it takes less than 2 hours to fully charge. If you need to store pictures taken with the webcam or .pdf files for your history class, you can save them to your 16 Gb SSD (Solid State Drive) or to an external device via USB thumb drive, an external hard drive with a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port, or an SD card. Commonly used applications are already installed on the Chromebook, presented as quick links to Google Applications like Drive, Maps, GMail, Google+ (Google’s Social Media Site) and other of-
*Summer 2013 is Almost Here! While you head out for the summer the work never stops here at Maine East (and the rest of District 207). The Technology Department and Maintenance Department begins their work throughout the summer cleaning the classrooms and computers you used during the year. when you come back in the fall, clean floors and brand new technologies and equipment will be awaiting your arrival. Also when you come back, appreciate the things that made your quality education possible. Kindness, Pass it on! *Did You Know? >Some cell phone CPUs can be more powerful than a computer. >Chrome OS is powered by Linux and it is FREE to Download. >CPU = Central Processing Unit (the heart & soul of a phone, tablet, laptop and computer) >Battery life varies with usage and overcharge: battery life dumps itself when too much energy is stored. >To learn more about Chrome OS visit: http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os

fline apps you can find on a regular computer. To search for more web-based applications, go directly to the Chrome Web Store, where you can browse through thousands of web applications that can each be downloaded in seconds and give you the best web experience possible. From origami creators to photoshop editors, from multimedia to Angry Birds Star Wars Edition, you’ll never be tired of both work and play on your Chromebook. One security option that can be implemented is incognito mode – private browsing, where your browser data and downloading history are not recorded. Other security features include password protection and a “Do Not Track” feature which sends a message to websites telling them not to do so. The Chromebook is perfect for my use 8 out of 10 times; it’s fast, quick, and easy to use. The only downside is the physical
design of the laptop. If I were Google or Samsung, I would place the ports on the side of the laptop instead of the rear because you can damage something if you forget or it gets knocked out accidently. Another con is that some of the school’s U drive, cd’s and other special online programs are incompatible with the Chromebook. It will take time to adapt, but change can always improves one’s future. With technology changing each day, who knows? You might be Google’s next top app developer! Thank You, Maine East, for reading the Demon Tech Report and giving me the opportunity to spread the Tech News here at Maine East! It has been a fun two years writing as Tech Reporter! Enjoy Your Summer Demon Nation ~ The Pioneer will see you back in the fall!
Don’t trek to see star trek By Lenny Ditkowski
I enjoy Star Trek; it is a class requirement for Mr. Zelinski. That being said, J.J. Abrams’ remake of the original Star Trek, while not terrible on its own, suffers from Abrams’ lack of film sense and obvious hatred of the epileptic. Every scene is filled with dozens of lens flares - even the inconsequential dialogues. The few scenes which aren’t plagued by lens flares suffer their equally obnoxious cousin: sudden zooms. If you can brave the nauseating visual effects, the acting is decent at worst. It is not spectacular, but it is not bad either. The film features the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise instantly dissolved. Within the first fifteen minutes of the movie, Captain Kirk is demoted, Spock is reassigned, and Uhura quickly takes issue with Spock’s lack of emotion. But never fear! Five minutes later, plans change and the entire first fifteen minutes of the movie no longer matters! Captain Kirk is once again Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise! Spock is second in command! Uhura and Spock kiss and make up! Also featured in this film are random smiling trauma victims and a blatant misunderstanding of how radiation works. Most of the film’s conflicts are forced, and quickly resolved. The movie’s saving grace, Benedict Cumberpatch’s weaponized cheekbones, are also easily viewed from BBC’s Sherlock. If you want to see this movie, save yourself some money and just don’t.
Students’ Disney trip filled with adventure By Sandra Rzeczyca Over the course of the year you probably heard words like: “I can’t wait to go to Disney World.” Or, “I can’t wait for spring break.”The wait was finally over on Thurday, March 21, when the students took a 26 hour bus ride to Disney World. The students’ first day began with a visit to Epcot, which includes the popular Test Track ride, with nearly a two hour waiting period. One of the biggest Disney attractions is the World Showcase which includes Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, The American Adventure, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, and Canada. Throughout Epcot, you could take pictures with your favorite Disney characters. “My dream came true when I was able to take a picture with princess Jasmine from Aladin.” Junior Jasmine Ratliff said. The band had their clinic and had to leave early to attend. They played and recorded “Stampede” from
The Lion King. When nighttime fell, the first day ended with a joyous firework celebration from China’s World Showcase above the water. The next morning it was a seven o’clock rise and the students headed off to Cocoa Beach Shepherd’s Park, where you could surf the Atlantic Ocean. Across from the beach, you could shop at Ron Jon’s Surf Shop for the latest swimwear. The orchestra was scheduled to play at Downtown Disney, but due to the
unfortunate sudden tornado watch, the performance was cancelled. When returning from Downtown Disney, Mrs. Djordjevic suggested that the orchestra students make a sneak performance at the hotel pool and everyone agreed to perform with help from the band students for light. The orchestra performed Dotonbori Dash, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Der Heyser Bulgar, Nordic Waltzes and Irish Legend. The next day the adventure continued into The Mag-
ic Kingdom where it was the band’s turn to perform in the parade at the heart of Magic Kingdom. They performed “Friend like Me” from Aladdin. Mr. Eubank of the Fine Arts Department made a surprise visit when the band was about to perform. He was also joined by band director Mrs. Holt’s husband and daughter Claire. The final stop at Disney was Hollywood Studios. The Animal Kingdom was planned initially, but plans changed when many stu-
dents started falling ill due to the flu virus going around and not many chaperones were left to go. Despite the flu, those who were well enough attended Hollywood Studios and The Orchestra Clinic. The Orchestra played and recorded the Beauty and the Beast theme song. Sadly, all good things come to an end. Still, the next music tour is scheduled in two years; current freshmen and sophomores await somewhere new and exciting!

Girls soccer team battled hard all season
By Jasmina Basic The Deerfield Girls’ Varsity soccer team sits atop the standings of the CSL conference, but Maine East was able to hold them to a single goal lead - at least until the second half. As the final forty minutes arrived, though, the pace inexplicably dropped as it always seems to for the Maine East team, and the goals began to find the back of the net for the opposing team. Soccer not only drains players physically, as they spend over an hour running the field in stops and starts, but mentally as well. Players must be able to read in-
tentions, explore and create options for their teammates, and make instantaneous decisions as to how to advance the play. A team must have all of its components mesh together smoothly in order to achieve a goal -exactly that for a soccer team- and keep those aspects moving through the entirety of the game. The Maine East Varsity soccer team finds itself aching to capture this consistency. The week of April 22nd was an especially exhausting one for the Maine East booters, with games played that Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and a tournament at Lake Forest Academy bringing a game

Friday and two on Saturday. It became a matter of mentality over physical fatigue as the week came to a close, but the girls were set to make the most of the situation. After defeating Elgin Academy 1-0 as Aornina Abram found the back of the net, the Demons saw themselves in a very favorable position to bring home some hardware. The next morning, muscles aching and soccer tans forming, Maine East streaked past West Side Chicago by 7 goals to none, with goals from Rachel Maurer, Amanda Whelan, Jackie Contreras, Gina Mando, and Stephanie Nikho cinch-

The Varsity team placed 6th overall at the CSL Conference Tournament, beating out Waukegan and tying
ing at least second place as they moved into the finals. However, after conceding three goals and not being able to finish opportunities on the offensive side, Maine East was defeated in the final. With that they traveled home to the end of a very long week, soreness soothed at least a bit by the trophy that accompanied them back home to Demon Nation. *** The following week, the team was amped up for even more, celebrating their Senior players Sara Corona-Perez, Elim Kim, Samantha Contreras, and myself, Jasmina Basic. Fac-
ing Amundsen in a stadium filled rather well with fans and parents, the Demons obtained a 5-0 victory in the last game these seniors would play at Maine Memorial Stadium. Junior Kathy Janik achieved a hat trick with a memorable three goals against the vikings, and the rest of the team played key roles in the win as well. The season for the girls ended with a defeat against New Trier at St. Ignatius, but regardless of the record as the season came to a close, the girls found laughter, accomplishment, and family between the worn out endlines of the soccer field.
with Glenbrook North. Feena Chirayath took 2nd place at the Conference Tournament in the #8 singles bracket. At the IHSA Sectional Tournament, the Blue Demons were represented by Yousif and Zikaria, playing singles, and the Chirayath sisters and Ramachandran and Sajan playing doubles, all of whom put up tough matches. As the badminton season came to a close,
Zikaria, one of the several varsity players graduating this year, looked back with fondness. “This season was a blast,” she said. “I enjoyed every moment I spent on the team, and I will really miss everyone.” Coach Howley is looking forward to next season and encourages girls to come out next year “ready, willing and able to work hard.”

Boys tennis team pounds out a 20-win season By Fatima Patel Coach Schwan is pleased to say that the boy’s tennis team has had a tremendous season, with an impressive 20 wins against just 4 losses, exceeding all expectations. Adding to the team’s already impressive season is the fact that the team has also had 6 semifinalists at the Conference Tournament. Two of the semifinalists, Danny Choi and Robert Lazar, made it to the State Sectionals Quarterfinals round, just one game away from qualifying for state. Some of this season’s notable players include junior Daniel Choi playing #1 singles and freshman Robert Lazar at #2 singles, as well as the #2 doubles team consisting of Moni Singh and Subham Saha, along with #3 doubles pair Syed Haque and Peter Kloda. Coach Schwan is very pleased with the tennis season. “Achieving a 20-win season is a special accomplishment that this team can take great pride in,” he said. “We had a great group of tennis players but an even better group of young men!”
The boys tennis team dealt with difficult weather all Spring, but managed to earn 20 victories this season.
Girls badminton team finishes strong season By Fatima Patel Things are looking up for the Maine East girls badminton team. According to Varsity Coach Dave Howley, there was a definite improvement on the team this season. The Varsity girls started off the season with a bang, taking first place overall at the Leyden Invitational and continuing to have successful meets and invites. Coach Howley said that this year’s team was made up of hardworking, dedicated players, some
of whom have become fierce competitors in the league. Senior Femy Chirayath, who plays #2 singles and #1 doubles, had a lot of success this season, particularly in doubles, where she teamed up with her sister, junior Feena Chirayath. The duo placed well throughout the season, taking 1st place at the Leyden Invitational and 3rd at the Glenbard East Invite. Other notable players include #1 singles
