Robert Eaker, author

What is the focus of A Summing Up? As I approached the latter part of my career, I began reflecting on the phases of my professional life and all that I have had the privilege to learn. In this resource, I sum up my key takeaways and insights. My hope is that educators who read this book will come away with practical ideas for how to approach increasing student achievement and creating effective schools.

What moved you to write this memoir? I’m in the later stages of my career, and I think there is a natural tendency for people to reflect on their professional and personal lives as they get older. Also, many educators think that my career— along with Richard DuFour’s career—started when we created the PLC at Work® framework. But when we wrote Professional Learning Communities at Work: Best Practices for Enhancing Student Achievement, we had already been working together for 15 years.

Personal relationships and friendships like this one have driven my professional career, added quality to my life, and impacted my thinking over the years. I wanted to share some of these personal stories as well as share the back story of what I have learned about effective teaching and schooling. A Summing Up ties all of these details together into one resource.

What do you hope educators will take from your story? I hope that by reading about my career, readers feel inspired to reflect on their own journey and to improve as educators. There are many strategies and ideas throughout the resource, but the single greatest takeaway that I have learned in the last 20 years is this: the engine that drives the PLC at Work process and determines a school’s success—or lack thereof—is leadership. Strategies and processes can only ever be as good as the leaders implementing them.

The engine that drives the PLC at Work process and determines a school’s success—or lack thereof—is leadership.”

A Summing Up

CHALLENGE Woodlawn Middle School’s PLC journey began more than 15 years ago, when it sought to develop common formative and benchmark assessments in order to increase student learning. At that point, standardized tests were the only primary sources driving instruction or increasing student achievement at the school. Principal Greg Grana, who has served Woodlawn for more than a decade, knew a professional learning community could simultaneously prepare students to reach local testing benchmarks and foster a more collaborative staff, even if some teachers weren’t immediately on board with the PLC framework. “The biggest challenges we faced were getting past the ‘why,’” Grana said. “’Why do we have to do this?’ It took a while, but you hit a certain point, and the questions go from ‘why’ to ‘how.’ And that’s huge. That’s a monumental shift in thinking. When you start hearing talk like that among your staff, that’s how you know you’re in good shape.”

IMPLEMENTATION Kildeer Countryside School District 96 started the PLC journey for Woodlawn, as the entire district adapted the framework at once. Woodlawn set off by evaluating its student achievement data and focusing on the best practices needed to improve student performance. Grana said the teachers collectively made a commitment to own responsibility for student successes and to hold the same rigorous expectations for every child in the school system. 2018 WINNER

IMPLEMENTATION CONTINUED As the PLC began to develop, practice quickly moved into action. Woodlawn’s staff shifted into a growth mindset, as knowledge shared among its professionals allowed the PLC’s principles to drive the school’s daily functioning. District content teams worked to develop a common set of targets for

each grade and subject. Teams also met regularly to review data to design effective differentiated instruction. In short, focusing on the four critical questions of a PLC ensured a guaranteed and viable curriculum for all of Woodlawn’s students.

RESULTS In addition to winning the coveted DuFour Award, Woodlawn was also twice named a United States Department of Education “Blue Ribbon School” in recognition for its students’ strong achievement after embracing the PLC framework.

all parties to monitor a learner’s classroom progress. Also, students are able to seek help from Woodlawn’s most skilled professionals during an established “flex” period, ensuring that learners with the greatest areas of need can receive individualized teaching or coaching.

Grana said Woodlawn has enjoyed “incredibly high” standardized test scores and that the interdependence between content and grade team members has grown exponentially.

“We have been a fully immersed professional learning community,” Grana said. “That means everything that we do, we do under the PLC umbrella. Through the years as a professional learning community, what it has done is that it’s focused on the path we’ve taken—we always refer back to what we do and why we do it.”

Students and families are also provided feedback through a standards-based reporting system, allowing

& QA

Matt Townsley, author

What is the focus of Making Grades Matter? A number of excellent books exist suggesting why educators should change their grading practices, with several suggesting how it can be done in K−12 schools. Our book fills an important gap, providing a practical guide for middle and high school educators that makes explicit connections between the work of a PLC and implementing standards-based grading (SBG). PLC Connection sections are embedded throughout the book to give teams of teachers and administrators practical steps to collaboratively implement SBG.

Why is implementing a standards-based grading system important? Traditional grading practices have been used for over one hundred years, and to date, there have been no meaningful research reports to support it. Rather than using points and percentages, learning can more transparently be communicated when disaggregated by content standard using a Likert scale. When students see their relative strengths and weaknesses in the grade book, they can take more ownership of their learning. Similarly, teachers using SBG report more focused instruction, which will lead to increases in achievement.

What are some common challenges of implementing standards-based grading at the secondary level? While our book documents a number of standardsbased grading implementation pitfalls for secondary teachers to avoid, one overarching question stands out: “How do I get started as a teacher?” Teachers

Nathan L. Wear, author

need guidance scaffolding their implementation of standards-based grading rather than merely believing they are “doing it” or “not doing it.” Because we believe learning in secondary classrooms is fluid, not binary, our book helps teachers see their standardsbased grading implementation along a continuum.

How does Making Grades Matter address these challenges? We suggest criteria in each chapter for implementing three standards-based grading principles: communicating current levels of learning, repurposing homework as ungraded practice, and providing students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning. The criteria included in each end-of-chapter continuua help individual teachers and collaborative teams create an action plan to develop steps for future improvement. In addition, PLC Connection sections are embedded in each chapter to give teams of teachers and administrators practical steps to collaboratively implement SBG principles.
