St. Nessan’s JCSP News

“It was the darkest, most wretched hour of the night when the dead...

St Nessan’s students accompanied by Ms. Toomey meet Darren Shan Literacy and putting pen to paper is very much alive at St Nessan’s Community College where over 85 students recently entered the Darren Shan Zombie Writing Competition. Their brief was to write an essay beginning with the words from Darren Shans latest novel, “Zom-B”-“it was the darkest, most wretched hour of the night when the dead came back to life and spread like a plague of monstrous locusts through the village of Pallaskenry...“ After much deliberation, the winners were selected and- 7 winners from St Nessan’s Community College: Grace Rogan, Shane Leahy, Christopher O Brien, Conor Hannan, Cian Guerin, Kim Kiely, & Gary Dillon. All of the students were whisked off to meet the world famous author Darren Shan tomorrow and each student received a signed copy of his latest book “Zom-B”. This event took place on Tuesday 26th Feb at 12.00 noon , at The Georgian House, 2 Pery Square, Limerick. The reception lasted approximately two hours and the students got to meet and talk to Darren Shan and find out all his writing secrets.. It’s a big deal for JCSP and hopefully we will get some press coverage out of it. All schools who took part received a selection of Darren Shan books for their students to enjoy. There was a fantastic response to this competition here in the school and we plan to display all entries in the school Library later in the week for all our students and parents to see. So massive thanks to all who supported and encouraged the students-every little bit helps! This is just one of the many Literacy Interventions running here in the school to encourage all our students to read and write more. Events like this act as an incentive for students to put pen to paper and get writing, said Ms Marie Toomey, the JCSP Co-ordinator at the school.” The JCSP programme is designed to ensure that these young people can benefit from their time in school and enjoy the experience of improvement and success. This is just one of the many events that we get involved in to make the experience of school relevant and accessible and ultimately fun”, she added. This JCSP event was open to all schools in Limerick city and county and a total of 10 schools took part. All the students were displayed at No 2,Pery Square and Darren Shan encouraged all the students to write every day. He also stressed the importance of reading in this technical age. Kieran O’Donnell, Limerick TD who supported the event spoke about the importance of reading in developing ones’ vocabulary and writing. He also stressed the importance of reading every day whether its comics, magazines, graphic novels or indeed one of our many local newspapers in the Limerick area. Deputy Mayor, Joe Leddin also spoke about the power of a book to transport you into another world and the importance of reading for education and pleasure. Ms. Marie Toomey

Doodle

Google

The theme of this year’s Doodle for Google competition was “Inventions”. The competition was open to first and second year students. There were many interesting and creative entries to choose from. Congratulations to the winners. Joint first place winners in first year were Chloe Galligan 1DE and Josh Roche 1DE. Matias Silva Grandi won second place. In second year first place went to Shinice Kennedy 2DI with Allana O’Mahoney 2DI taking second place and Leanne Ryan 2DA in third place.

Shinice Kennedy Walsh wrote about her entry “My Google picture is about stuff that I can’t live without. My favourite inventions such as lip gloss, hair products, makeup and a mirror”

Chloe Galligan said “I drew this doodle for Google to represent inventions. I drew a high heel, a pencil, a cup and a plane. I drew a scientist because they invented stuff”.

Allana O’Mahoney based her design on the invention of the plane and flying. She wrote “This is about the first woman to fly across the Atlantic and she made us stand up and be proud”.

Josh Roche wrote about his design that “mine is about the inventions that changed the way we lived. The phone changed the way we communicate. The light bulb is a new way of lighting instead of candles. The hot air balloon a great way to see an aerial view but not as good as a satellite. Toilet roll surely made us modern in the way we live. Sun glasses saved our eyes from getting damaged in the sun. The umbrella kept us dry from rainy days and keeps us in the shade from the sun and of course the wheel. Without the wheel we would have no fast way of travel”.

Fr Gerry Daly Scholarship

L to R. Ms. Teresa Delaney; Ms. Roche, Emma Roche - Scholarship Recipient; Fr. Adrian Egan, Redemptorist Fathers; Ms. Dwan & Mr O’ Brien Principal

To honour the memory of the late Fr. Gerry Daly, the Redemptorist Fathers have presented the Fr. Gerry Daly Scholarship to a student(s) from St. Nessan’s Community College. This is the third year of the Scholarship. It is awarded each year to a student(s) to assist them with their third level education expenses. All students in the college, once eligible, fill in an application form for the scholarship. Each application is assessed by the trustees and a recommendation(s) are made to the Principal. Fr. Gerry worked tirelessly over many years for the less well off in Limerick City. He will be especially remembered for the Fr. Gerry Daly Christmas Food Appeal. Because of the long association that St. Nessan’s Community College has had with this appeal, the Redemptorist Fathers chose St. Nessan’s in order to honour Fr. Gerry’s memory. This year the Trustees of the Scholarship decided to award the Scholarship to Emma Roche. At the award ceremony, Fr. Adrian Egan, of the Redemptorist Fathers, congratulated Emma and wished her well in the future careers. Congratulations to both students and we wish them every success in the future.

The Golden Apple “Ull Orga” On the 1st of February 2012 , sculptor Rachel Joynt came to St. Nessan’s C.C to start a project with the 5th year group. She explained that where the proposed stem will be, you will be able to look through an eye piece and it will be lit inside. Inside, you will see 5 glass seeds suspended in a bronze star shaped pod. The Golden Apple arrived on the 26th of June and was carefully placed at the front entrance to St. Nessan’s Community College. Rachel Joynt came back to the school today as the official unveiling of her sculpture took place. Former CEO, Ms. Deirdre Frawley, Mr. Paul Patton CEO, members of St. Nessan’s Community College Board of Management and members from the Parents Association were all present to witness the event, along with staff and students from St. Nessan’s Community College.

Soccer Update

St Nessan’s 3 - 3 Colaiste Chiarain St. Nessan’s u19’s soccer team took on Colaiste Chiarain from Croom in a friendly at LIT on the 1st of March. The match was evenly contested, with both sides leading at various stages. Colaiste Chairain were first to score straight after halftime to go into a 1 - 0 lead. Nessan’s responded by equalising through a cooly taken strike by Jason O Callaghan from the edge of the area after the ball broke loose to him following a tussle in the Croom box. Nessan’s kept up the pressure and Ross Bowen blasted home from 10 yards on the half volley after a lovely floated cross from Daniel McInerney to give Nessan’s the lead. Croom then came back into the game once more and equalised with 15 minutes left on the clock. Just as the game seemed to be heading for a 2 -2 draw, Ross Bowen showed his instinct for goal when he swirled and shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the Croom net to put Nessan’s ahead 3 - 2 on 90 minutes. However, in a game that was end to end, Croom attacked from the restart and managed to equalise in injury time before the referee called a halt to a very entertaining game of soccer.
