From the Pastor’s Desk on the Occasion of our 110th Anniversary
Greetings In The Marvelous Name Of Jesus,
I am ecstatic to welcome you to Trinity Presbyterian Church’s 110th Anniversary celebration. As I was reflecting on Trinity’s history, a single theme persisted. God has been faithful to us. Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to another country. As I was watching the sky at sunset, I was reminded that this is the same sky that I live under at home. Whether in Montclair or in a distant place across the world, we are connected under the same sun, the same moon, and the same sky. We may be far apart in distance, but we are connected under the same firmament.
When reflecting on Trinity’s history, I was reminded of this same principle. 110 years ago, a few women felt the call of God to share God’s love with the youth in the neighborhood. God was with them as they gathered for that first Sunday School. God was with them when the church outgrew the living room and moved into a building. God was with Trinity when it moved from Bloomfield to Montclair. God was with Trinity at its zenith. God was with Trinity through the pandemic. The same God who was with those women 110 years ago is the same God who is with us now. We may be years apart, but the thing that connects us is our faith in that God and our commitment to serve God.
No matter what is happening in the life of our church, God’s presence and God’s faithfulness have remained the same. Indeed, we have come this far by faith and our faith in God, who was with our founding members and who is with us now, will carry us into the future.
Happy 110th Anniversary Trinity Presbyterian Church!!
Your humble servant, Reverend, Doctor Anita R. Wright, Pastor

ELDER DELZAL CAROLYN BROWN MOSS
Elder Delzal Carolyn Brown Moss was a true Montclarion. She grew up in Montclair and attended Montclair schools. Delzal worked for many years at UMDNJ (now Rutgers University) and rose to be Director of Benefits and Compensation Services statewide. Elder Del was soft spoken, elegant, and a woman of deep faith who served at Trinity Presbyterian Church Montclair for 53 years (from a child of 14.) Delzal served both as Deacon and Elder to Rev. Archie Hargraves, Rev. Allen Shelton, and Rev. Dr. Anita Wright. Aside from her family and work duties, Delzal was heavily involved in the church and the Montclair community. Her involvement included Moderator and Treasurer of Presbyterian Women in the Congregation, Birthday Rally Captain, Trinity’s Tuesday Night Prayer Group, Trinity’s Evangelism Committee.
Elder Delzal was the Founder of Trinity’s Summer Youth Academy (TSYA) in 1999. She worked tirelessly for Trinity’s Adopt-A-Family program, and annual Christmas Programs for Behavioral Health patients, the Angel Tree program for children of inmates, and many more social causes. Elder Delzal was part of the Presbytery’s prison visitation ministry. Del often personally hand-delivered meals to needy families on holidays. She gave continuously, with no second thoughts. Delzal worked hardest to achieve the highest goals, and accomplishments, and to provide for her church family. Delzal had such a kind, gentle heart, and beautiful spirit. Del always put others before herself. Whether it was giving meals for her aides at home, or to the nurses in the hospitals, Del gave everything she could to those she loved and cared about. Elder Delzal Moss, a beautiful and remarkable woman, is truly missed.
TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
A 110th Anniversary Historical Perspective
Our Heritage
Our story began one hundred and ten years ago, as a historical journey of faith with the struggle of a small group of Christians climbing up the rough side of the mountain, forming what is today “Trinity Presbyterian Church.” A group of women led by Mrs. Frances Valentine and Mrs. G. Shaw became concerned about the spiritual life of the children in the Bloomfield, New Jersey community, and decided to gather the children and teach them the Bible for one hour each Lord’s Day. The group outgrew Mrs. Shaw’s home and met in the various churches and halls in Bloomfield.
The Sunday School grew and with the growth, more families began to participate, relying on their spiritual belief in Christ as their personal Savior. The Rev. Charles Summer was invited to organize this group, guided by the Holy Spirit, into a formal Sunday School and Church. The Sunday School was formally organized on or about October 11, 1913. The church was organized during the same week as a Mission Church, which was known as a Presbyterian Mission, working among Negroes. From 1913-1935 many Pastors served our mission.
The Trinity Mission led by Mrs. Frances Valentine, moved to a small frame building, at 29 Race Street, Bloomfield, NJ (it was affectionately called The Doll House).
In 1935, the Reverend C. Lincoln McGee was invited to take charge of the Chapel Ministry. Under Rev. McGee’s leadership the congregation grew and soon found it necessary to move to a larger facility at 75 Race Street. Later the New Jersey Highway Authority would need this property towards the construction of the New Jersey Garden State Parkway. A Building Fund Committee was established in 1936.
TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
A 110th Anniversary Historical Perspective
Our Heritage
On May 9, 1948, under the auspices of Newark Presbytery, the Presbyterian Mission formally became Trinity United Presbyterian Church. July 24, 1949, the church relocated from 75 Race Street, Bloomfield to Orange Road and High Street, Montclair, New Jersey for the purchase price of $27,500. The dedication service for Trinity Presbyterian Church was held at their new Montclair location which became our beloved Trinity United Presbyterian Church.
Under the leadership of Rev. C. Lincoln McGee, Trinity continued its growth, with increased membership, new organizations, a wide range of programs weekly and Sunday afternoons and renovation of the fellowship hall. The Men’s Club for many years was a very active social and educational club in the church, holding monthly breakfasts with eminent speakers, from all areas of life. These breakfasts brought together men of every political, educational, and social backgrounds, creed, and national origin.
George H. Goodwine served as Choir Director from 1918 to 1961. He was a great inspiration to the musical life of the church. Mr. Goodwine composed special music and wrote plays that delighted the hearts of our members and friends. He retired in 1962 after a period of illness. Ben Carter, Mildred Soaries, Clement Mormon, Paula Ward, Reye Winbush and Richard Alston who served as choir directors all brought their musical expertise, making the choir’s music a valuable addition to the service. Melvin Calhoun III is our current Choir Director as of March 2024.

CHURCH
A 110th Anniversary Historical Perspective
Our Heritage
Through the years Trinity has had a very large and spiritual Youth Choir directed by Ben Carter and Mildred Soaries. The Children’s Choir was formerly directed by Paula Ward, June Jennings, Phyllis Scott and Velma Spearman.
Rev. McGee was very active in all aspects of the community and surrounding areas. He served as President of the Clergy Club for many years. The church became known as the “Friendly Little White Church” on the hill and became both a visible and viable part of the community, extending well beyond Montclair. Rev. McGee faithfully served as Pastor of Trinity for 46 years, retiring in 1985. He was elected by the congregation to the status of Pastor Emeritus.
The Rev. Barbara N’dovie and the Rev. Clement N’dovie were assigned by the Presbytery of Newark, as interim co-pastors of Trinity in 1985 and served until 1986.
The Rev. Archie Hargraves was appointed by the Presbytery of Newark as Interim Pastor in 1986. However, according to established Presbytery mandate Rev. Hargraves’ affiliation with Trinity Presbyterian Church was dissolved for six months. Visiting pastors preached the Sunday morning worship services during that time. The Search Committee presented their findings to the congregation for approval to “call” the Rev. Archie Hargraves to be pastor in 1988. Rev. Hargraves was ordained and installed as Pastor on September 18, 1988. Under the leadership of Rev. Archie Hargraves, Trinity continued the legacy of its founders which included the more than double average Sunday Church attendance, a significant increase in church membership, continued involvement with the community, and additional renovations to the church and manse.
Trinity continued to be a place of meetings for civic and social organizations. Rev. Hargraves was very involved with the local Million Man Organization, Home Corp. and other community groups.
Rev. Hargraves faithfully serviced Trinity until his death in 1999, after a one-year battle with cancer. In honor of Rev. Hargraves’ faithful service, the manse was renamed the Rev. Archie Hargraves Educational Center.
TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
A 110th Anniversary Historical Perspective
Our Heritage
Pastor, Rev. Allen C. Shelton began his pastoral ministry with Trinity in September 2001. With vibrancy, creativity and vision, new programs have been organized; additional Bible classes formed, and an active Senior Ministry Program (open to the community) is in place. Youth programs are opened to all young people in the community and surrounding areas. Through these activities, the needs of youth are being met. Trinity’s youth programs cover Junior Achievement Projects, Project Excellence, Summer Youth Work (including Farmers’ Market), Vacation Bible School, Community Service Projects, and Trinity Presbyterian site for the S.T.A.R.S Program that provides tutorial services (in conjunction with the Montclair Board of Education), within the last five years we have expanded our community, outreach activities to include the Pumpkin Patch, Trinity’s Summer Youth Academy, and The Multimedia Academy.
Rev. Shelton continues to carry on the legacy of our former Pastors by being involved with the community. He works with the Montclair Board of Education, Home Corp., Clergy Associations, and other service organizations.
We, the members of Trinity Presbyterian Church are proud of our heritage and owe a debt of gratitude to those dedicated Christian men and women of vision.
For one hundred and ten years “We’ve Come, This Far by Faith.” May we be challenged to allow God’s Spirit to continue to do His work in us.
To God Be the Glory for things He has done.

Our Heritage
Our current Pastor, Reverend Dr. Anita R. Wright hails from Big Island, Virginia by way of Princeton NJ. Rev Wright began her pastorate as the 13th pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church on April 2nd, 2017. Reverend Wright brought to the pastorate a plethora of Christian experience and a deep abiding love for God. Under Rev Wright’s tenure as a pastor, the evening bible study, the quarterly senior luncheons, and the congregational forums have restarted. Jazz in the sanctuary was brought back in celebration of fathers in 2018. Reverend Wright has sought to build relationships with area congregations by sharing in joint worship experiences for Dr. Martin Luther King Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and participating in area ordinations and installations. Reverend Wright has built relationships through the Montclair Clergy Association and the Montclair African American Clergy Association. Under her pastorate, Trinity has been an organizer of the inaugural 7 last sayings of Christ worship service sponsored by the National Black Presbyterian Caucus-Newark Chapter. Trinity has also hosted a community forum of the Board of Education. Trinity has also worked with the Montclair Police Department to address community concerns as well as to maintain the utmost safety.
Finally Reverend Wright has strengthened Trinity’s presence and representation within the denomination by serving as the moderator for the Service and Witness Team of the Newark Presbytery and as the Newark Presbytery Commissioner of the Synod of the Northeast.
We the members of Trinty are proud of our heritage. We stand on the shoulders of ancestors and elders that have come before us. We are excited about our future for we have indeed come this far by faith.

The Reverend Doctor C. Lincoln McGee was born March 28, 1909, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of three sons born to Charles & Corrine Bates McGee. He departed this life October 31, 1992.
A graduate of the Bible Institute of Pennsylvania in 1931, he moved to Orange, New Jersey and continued his studies at Bloomfield College and Seminary, Bloomfield, New Jersey and received his BA and BD degrees in 1937 and 1939 respectively. He earned his MA degree from the School of Education, New York University in 1948. He was awarded an Honorary D.D. Degree from Bloomfield College (a seminary) in 1963. Rev. Ordained June 23, 1938, by Presbytery of Philadelphia, he was granted continuous permission to labor outside the bounds of that Presbytery until transferred to Newark Presbytery. He returned to Bloomfield, where during his busy college days he found the time, energy and interest to become so involved in the little mission church on Race Street that he was called to become their Pastor in 1939. This little mission church was later relocated and became known as Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montclair.
In 1940, Rev. McGee married Maybelle Pierce of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as Chaplain in the United States Army during World War II and thereafter in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Rev. McGee served Trinity Presbyterian Church as its loving, dedicated Pastor for a span covering 46 years – he was away from 1942 to 1946 to serve his Country as Chaplain in the United States Army – resuming his pastorate at Trinity at the end of his active service in 1946 and serving until his retirement in 1985. The honor of Pastor Emeritus was bestowed on Rev. McGee on September 10, 1989.

REVEREND DR. ANITA R. WRIGHT —
Reverend Doctor Anita R. Wright is a woman with a deep love for God. Her ministry demonstrates her passion for preaching and teaching to transform lives. She is committed to sharing the Word of God as God gives her opportunity through her service to the congregation and community, through her weekly Bible Studies and worship experiences.
Dr. Wright grew up in Big Island, VA with her loving parents and three siblings. She attended the Bedford County Public Schools and was actively invested in the Sharon Baptist Church. There she grew in her faith as she participated in the youth ministry, Outreach and Christian Education, and other ministries of the church.

Understanding the necessity of being prepared, Reverend Wright continued her education at Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union and Princeton Theological Seminary, where she received a variety of scholarships and awards including the S. Dr. Wright also holds degrees from Virginia University of Lynchburg (A.A., B.A.) and most recently Drew University (DMIN).
Dr. Wright’s ministry has been varied in its appropriation. Her ministry has included mentoring other ministers. She has actively mentored several younger colleagues in ministry who are seeking to fulfill God’s call for their lives. As a part of this, Reverend Wright developed a Ministers in Training course that has been used with a local Baptist Association in Virginia.
As part of her call to the local church and to build communities of support among other clergy, Reverend Wright is a member of the local ministers’ alliances and colleague cohort groups. During her time as a bi-vocational minister, Reverend Wright has also served as a Hospice Chaplain, a chaplain intern, a Residential Childcare Counselor, Director of the Office of Spiritual Life at Bloomfield College, and as an adjunct professor. Even in these places, she sought to use her gifts and callings to impact the world and transform the lives of those around her.
Rev. Dr. Anita Wright was ordained by Reverend Leroy M. Mitchell III at the Greater Brookville Church in Lynchburg, VA in 2010 and in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in April 2017. She currently serves as the pastor of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montclair, NJ.
