Welcome to MLC Snowsports

Welcome to the 2024 MLC Snowsports Program! This sport includes two separate Downhill and Cross Country programs and racing events, culminating in the Interschools Snowsports Championships.

The College’s commitment to this sport includes; – provision of information to the team and parents – team uniform co-ordination

– pre-season strength and conditioning training for athletes

– Interschools Snowsports Championships administration including all race entries

– Interschools on-snow race support

Snowsports Program overview

Registration

Parents can register their daughter for MLC Snowsports via the sign-up link on the portal page at myMLCfamily > Co-curricular Activities > Sports

Please note the following important points before registering:

1. MLC does not provide any transport, lift tickets or accommodation for team members or their families for any events, except as indicated for the Cross Country Camp.

2. For Downhill events, MLC requires that team members have 10 days on-snow experience in their chosen discipline (skiing or snowboarding) before partcipating in the Trial Weekend and competing in Interschools competitions. Team members must be able to confidently link turns and stop promptly. Please contact the Downhill Manager to discuss your daughter’s proficiency if you require guidance

3. For Cross Country events, MLC requires that if students are a beginner and have never Cross Country Skied before, they need to attend the camp held at Mt Hotham during the Term 2 holidays. Please see Cross Country overview for more details.

4. Team members’ must be able to navigate to the race courses on the mountain, or be accompanied to those locations by a parent or guardian. MLC Snowsports does not guide team members around the mountain, and is not responsible for supervision of any team member outside of competition times at the specific competition location.

5. All parents/guardians of registered students are required to assist the team at some point during the Snowsports season. There are a number of ways to assist the team. Find out more by contacting the Friends of Snow Sports, which is a special interest group of the MLC Parents’ Association

School Leave

The Victorian Interschools Championships (Downhill and Cross Country) and National Championships are held during school time in Term 3 For students to compete in these events, parents/guardians must submit a leave application to the College to gain permission for the student to attend these events.

Applications for leave must be made directly by a parent/guardian to the relevant School Office

Communication

This handbook is the official resource for the MLC Snowsports program. Please refer to this handbook for all queries as the answers to most questions are contained within.

The Cross Country and Downhill Snowsports Managers will send important information via email to parents/guardians, and when relevant, to team members.

It is also important that parents/guardians, and where relevant, team members monitor the Snow Australia Interschools news for the latest updates about interschools events. Please subcribe via this link:

Venues

The Victorian Snowy Mountains consists of a variety of ski resorts including Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and Lake Mountain.

The Victorian Interschools competitions for Cross Country and Downhill are held at Mt Buller each year.

The Australian Interschools competition is held on alternate years at Perisher New South Wales or Mt Buller, Victoria. In 2024, the event will be at Perisher.

Additional requirements and costs

Uniform and Equipment

Students are required to provide their own skiing and/or snowboarding equipment and clothing appropriate for the environment – a helmet is compulsory for all events (except Cross Country Skiing).

Uniform

Weather conditions in the mountains are unpredictable and extreme. Students and parents are expected to prepare for all weather conditions by ensuring that they have adequate clothing. Students can compete in their normal ski gearno race clothing is required. See the notes below regarding Race Suits for the Alpine event (Downhill program).

Helmets and MLC Buff

It is compulsory to wear a helmet and MLC Buff whilst training or competing on-snow with the MLC Snowsports Team, except Cross Country Skiing

MLC Snowsports ‘Soft Shell' Jacket

It is compulsory that this jacket is worn at the daily presentation to display that you are member of the MLC community. This jacket can also be worn as a race jacket, it is lightweight and waterproof, can also put warmer layers underneath if needed.

New Families will have the opportunity to buy the MLC Soft Shell Jacket. You will receive further information about this in Term 2.

MLC Snowsports Beanie

The cost is included in the program sign up fees and will be distributed in Term 2 to all team members. We encourage team members to wear this at daily presentations along with their compulsory MLC ‘Soft Shell’ jacket.

Race Suits

These can only be worn in Alpine events (Downhill program).

Please note that Division 6 competitors cannot wear race suits in Interschools Competitions. Race suits are not compulsory for the Alpine event – general ski gear is appropriate.

The MLC 'Soft Shell' Jacket is also made to race in.

Equipment

Eastern Mountain Centre (EMC) is a recommended supplier and our contact is Doug Evans. You can buy or hire gear from EMC and they service and repair equipment as well as provide race prep, such as race ski waxing.

Accommodation, transport and lift tickets

Families are responsible for providing transport and accommodation to support their daughter's participation in all Downhill events, as well as Lift Tickets.

Families of participating students should commence the search for accommodation ASAP.

Please book your accommodation early. Accommodation bookings in the Interschools week are extremely heavy, and you may miss out if you leave it too late.

Parent Involvement

All parents of student-athletes in the Snowsports program are required to assist the team at some point during the Snowsports season in Terms 2 and 3. There are a number of ways to assist the team and these requests will be shared by the Cross Country and Downhill Snowsports Managers during the season.

Parents’ Association Friends of Snow Sports (FOSS) Group

The Parents’ Association Special Interest Group for Snowsports is called the Friends of Snowsports (FOSS),

and supports the MLC Snowsports program by arranging social events for the MLC Snowsports community and providing a support service for new families to the program.

FOSS also provides a vital role in assisting with fundraising for items, uniforms or equipment to benefit the students in the program.

Interschools Officials and Team Managers

Interschools Officials

Parent volunteers are required to fill Interschools course official roles. Course officials assist with the running of events – no skills or knowledge is required to undertake these volunteer roles. The most common job involves sorting competitors into bib order in the marshalling area at the top of a race course. It is a great way to see the event up close, and you can be with your child in the start area to support them as well.

Team Managers

We also call on parents each season to assist as Team Managers - this role involves taking team members down a race course for course inspection, and then chaperoning them back to the start area on the chair lift.

Allocation of volunteering roles

Team Manager and Official roles will be allocated by the relevant Snowsports Manager, using the survey that will be distributed in Term 2. Generally these positions will be allocated to a family and parents may choose who is to fill the position.

Interschools and Training Overview

Event categories

Downhill events

– Alpine: Skiers are timed on a modified giant slalom course

– Skiercross: Skiers are timed on a slope-style course

– Freestyle Moguls: Skiers are scored on a bumps/jumps course

– Snowboard Giant Slalom: Boarders are timed on a modified giant slalom course

– Snowboard Cross: Boarders are timed on a slope-style course

– Slopestyle: Divisions 1-3 ski and snowboard events

Cross Country events

Cross Country events are run in August at the Victorian Interschools.

– Classic – Skiers have a mass start and are timed on a Cross Country course

– Freestyle relay - Skiers have a mass start and are in a relay team of three on a Cross Country course If you are not certain which events are appropriate for your daughter, please organise a conversation with the Cross Country or Downhill Snowsports Manager.

Event selection survey in Term 2

Team members in Years 7-12, and parents of Junior School students, are given the opportunity to elect which events they wish to enter via a pre-season survey distributed at the beginning of Term 2 Once selected, parents are then required to complete the excursion registration process to confirm their dauighters participation.

Due to the competition organisers requirement, school staff are responsible for entering all team members into the Interschools competitions. This relies on parents completing the survey that will be sent to all families upon completing their registration. This will inform the Managers of which events each team member will be competing in. AT the time of registration, the MLC Downhill and Cross Country Managers also arrange for payment for all registrations and race fees, which are then billed to families

These costs are passed back to individual families on the student’s family account at the end of the season. Please refer to the costs sections on the following pages for more details.

Interschools Snowsports Competitions

The MLC Snowsports program is based around the Interschools Snowsports Championships: https://www.interschools.com.au/home-victoria/

This competition sees students compete for their school as part of a team, or as an individual in any of the seven discipline events. There are two separate competitions in the Interschools Snowsports Championships (Downhill and Cross Country).

Term 2 and 3 Pre-Season Training

Years 7-12

The College provides Strength and Conditioning opportunities for Years 7-12 team members in both Downhill and Cross Country programs commencing in Week 1 of Term 2:

– Tuesday and Thursday, 7am-8am in the PEC Weights Room with Mr Beverley

There are also Wednesday and Friday 7am-8am Cross Country (running) sessions available that will develop student’s cardio and aerobic capacity.

Students in Year 7-12 can register for these sessions on MyMLC via the Sports Sign-Up.

These sessions are optional but encouraged.

Years 3-6

Year 3-6 students can join Wednesday lunchtime Cross Country (running) sessions.

Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding Program overview

Training (Term 2 and 3)

Years 7-12 students can sign-up to the Term 2 and 3 Strength and Conditioning Training sessions on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings at 7am-8am at the PEC.

These sessions are optional, but encouraged

Trials weekend

Saturday, 27 and Sunday, 28 July

The MLC Snowsports Race Trials will be held at Mt Buller on Saturday, 27 July (Moguls only) and Sunday, 28 July. This is an opportunity for all team members to compete in a trial race under timed race conditions.

Teams and entries for the Victorian Interschools competition will be determined by performance at this event and attendance is essential.

The event will be managed by Mt Buller.

Interschools age divisions

Division 1: Years 11 - 12

Division 2: Years 9 - 10

Division 3: Years 7 - 8

Division 4: Years 5 - 6

Division 5: Years 4 and below.

Division 6: Prep - Year 2 available in Alpine and Ski Cross only.

You will need to select events you would like to enter into using the previously mentioned survey that will be shared to all registered participants in Term 2.

Cross Country Skiing Program overview

Training

Dryland Training (Terms 2 and 3)

Years 7-12 students can sign-up to the Term 2 and 3 Strength and Conditioning Training sessions on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings at 7am-8am at the PEC.

Roller Ski Training (Terms 2 and 3)

Years 7-12 students on Saturday afternoons, 3-5pm at Westerfolds Park, Templestowe.

These sessions will use College provided roller skis (like cross country skis with wheels) to teach the skills of Cross Country skiing. Students will also do specific fitness training. MLC will provide boots, roller skis and poles for these sessions. Students should provide the following when attending these sessions;

– Runners

– Cycle gloves or wrist pads

– Helmet (compulsory)

– Elbow and knee pads (when starting out in particular)

Lake Mountain Training Days (Term 3)

Dates TBC, typically on Sundays at the start of Term 3.

Depending on snow conditions we plan to conduct two onsnow training days at Lake Mountain. However, this is dependent on the availability of snow at the right time. These will be timed to coincide with a race day.

Parents must transport students to and from Lake Mountain.

Cross Country Training Camp at Mt. Hotham

7 – 12 July

Years 7-12

Students have the option of attending our Cross Country Ski Camp at Mt. Hotham in the final week of the Winter School holidays. This camp is an intensive training camp designed to transfer skills learnt at dry land training or improve existing skills, particularly for those wanting to compete at the Victorian Interschool Championships. All accommodation, transport, meals and coaching is included. No lift tickets are needed for Cross Country Skiing.

While the camp is not a compulsory part of the program, students will gain great improvement and attendance is preferable.

Prep – Year 6

Students can only attend this camp as day or half day participants. Families must make their own transport and accommodation arrangements and care for their daughter while she is not participating in training sessions. Parents must also attend training sessions unless specific arrangements are agreed.

Please note spaces are limited on this camp. Registration for the camp will open at the beginning of Term 2, you

must register promptly to get a spot. Priority will be given Lift Tickets for all MLC Snowsports events (Downhill and Cross Country)

Victorian Cross Country Interschools

2 - 4 August

Students compete in two events on Sunday, 4 August; a classic ski event and a freestyle relay event.

It has been our practice to travel to this event as a team for the whole weekend and stay together at Aeski. This allows us to finalise our pre-race preparation including course inspection and equipment preparation.

Students can travel and stay with the team or make their own arrangements and meet us there on Saturday morning.

Program

Friday, 2 August: Travel to Mt. Buller by bus in the afternoon.

Saturday, 3 August: Practice day and equipment preparation.

Sunday, 4 August: Victorian Interschools Competition Race Day. Return by bus.

Program and Event Costs

Team Selection

The Sport Department has endeavoured to provide the fairest and most competitive selection policy for both Downhill and Cross Country squads. The policy is designed to field the fastest/strongest possible teams for MLC. However, further adjustments to this policy may be required in the future. Feedback is welcome as we continue to refine this policy.

Selection Panel

– Snowsports Manager (Cross Country or Downhill) – Director of Sport

Downhill Team: selection for the Victorian Interschools competition

MLC places all students who are capable of competing safely at the Victorian Interschools competition into a team. MLC requires that team members have had a minimum of ten days on-snow in their chosen discipline (skiing or snowboarding) before competing in the Interschools competition.

Teams and running order will be selected on the following factors:

– 2024 Trial Weekend

Then,

– Previous Interschools results

– Team member's Year Level

– Total days of recent race training with a ski school

– Total days of recent ‘on snow’ skiing or snowboarding

Parents are asked to assist in this process by completing the Term 2 survey, which includes a rating of their daughter’s ski/snowboard ability.

Team members who have not raced in Snowsports events before are selected at the discretion of the Selection Panel and will naturally be seeded below athletes with Snowsports competition results/experience. For example, if there are two or more new team members in one Division, the team member/s who are older (in a higher Year Level at MLC) will be seeded higher.

It is important to note that the Victorian Interschools competition is an opportunity for team members to display their proficiency in their chosen events.

Selection for Alpine, Skiercross and Snowboard Events

Students will be selected in teams based on the combined times for both runs from the same event in the prior competition, where two runs were allowed. If only one run was allowed at the prior competition in the specific event, this single-run time will be used.

The benefits of this approach are;

– Team members who are most capable of consistently producing faster times are placed into the teams, giving the greatest opportunity for the best team result.

– The incumbent is not favoured in any way, allowing movement/selection based on a meaningful and unambiguous performance criteria.

– This is consistent with the Interschools system that sees competitors ranked on combined run times.

Exceptions to the above rule

Where a team member falls or fails to finish one run, she may be considered for re-selection under the 'benefit of the doubt' clause. The decision for inclusion in the team will rely on a comparison between that athlete and the athlete being considered for replacement on the times for the same run. For Alpine and Skiercross the threshold difference considered will be one second or more on that run. Any athlete who wishes to be considered under this clause must apply to the Co-ordinators in writing within 24 hours of the event in question.

For example:

Athlete 1: Run 1 - DNF, Run 2 - 20.81

Athlete 2: Run 1 - 21.00, Run 2 – 21.85

Athlete 1 can be considered for inclusion in the team above Athlete 2 as Athlete 1 was faster than Athlete 2 on the same run by a margin of at least one second.

For Snowboard Cross and Snowboard Giant Slalom the threshold difference considered will be two seconds or more on that run.

Selection by Ranking for Freestyle (Moguls)

Students will be selected and ranked in teams based on their ranking in the prior Freestyle competition.

Exceptions to the above rule

For a one run event, where a team member fails to finish the run she may be considered for re-selection for the next event by the Selection Panel (see notes below). For a two run event, where a team member fails to finish the run, she may be considered for re-selection under the 'benefit of the doubt' clause. The decision for inclusion in the team will rely on a comparison between that athlete and the athlete being considered for replacement on the scores for the same run. The threshold difference considered will be 10% or more.

Any athlete who wishes to be considered under this clause must apply to the Co-ordinators in writing within 24 hours of the event in question.

For example:

Athlete 1: Run 1 - DNF, Run 2 – 25.4

Athlete 2: Run 1 - , Run 2 - 23

Athlete 1 can be considered for inclusion in the team above Athlete 2 as the difference in scores is greater than 10% in favour of Athlete 1.

No Time/Score/Place Recorded

If a team member does not record a result in an event for some reason, the selection panel will look to seed her in the subsequent event based on times/placing from the previous, scored event. For example, if a team member

does not record a time/place at the National Championships, the times/places from the prior Victorian Interschools will be used to select her for the next event (in this case, the Victorian Interschools in the following year). Other pertinent timed/scored event data may be used in making this selection decision.

National Championships

Teams which are successful in qualifying for the next level of competition will be reselected so that the fastest/strongest possible team will represent MLC. Therefore, the composition of a winning team at a specific competition may alter for the next competition. Reasons for substitution will be primarily based on ranking (see selection notes above), but may also relate to injury, race fitness and/or unavailability.

Competing at the Victorian Interschools is a prerequisite for being selected on National Championships teams. The only opportunity for an athlete who missed the Victorian Interschools to join a team at National Championships is if there is a position left vacant on a team after all eligible athletes have been invited to fill the vacant position.

Cross Country Team: selection for the Victorian Interschools competition

Cross Country Teams will be selected based on student’s progress Lake Mountain Training Days, Roller Skate trainings, Cross Country Camp and competitions. A trial will be conducted at the XC Training Camp which will form the main basis for team selection. Other race results may be taken into consideration where a comparison can be made and a trial result is not available.

Where trial results are available and comparable, they will have priority over other results. That is, if two students trial, their trial results will be used to rank them.

Selection of teams shall be based upon the latest competition rankings and the Snowsports Manager’s discretion to take into account prior competition experiences in times of extenuating circumstance (for example, illness).

Substitutions and Other Team Variations

There are specific circumstances that may demand variation of a team. The factors to be considered by the selectors are outlined below;

Promotion of a competitor to compete in a higher age division:

Competitors can compete up a division to make a team but competitors must stay in that division in further Championships. Competitors can compete in one discipline in their own division and another division for other disciplines. Primary school competitors (Division 4, 5 and 6) cannot race in a Secondary Division (Division 1, 2 or 3).

Substitutions after close of entries – due to injury or sickness prior to the race event:

This situation usually occurs when a team member becomes ill or sustains an injury while at the snow in training, or any time prior to racing. A team member may also be unavailable to compete for various other reasons. The need for substitution may occur any time after Close of Entries. It is a formal written process with Interschools. Discretion always rests with the Interschools organisation.

At times, substitution may not be possible and the team must proceed minus one member. At best, the team will have the minimum number of competitors needed for a team. If the withdrawal of a competitor results in the team not having the minimum number for a ‘team’ entry, the other member/s may compete in the event as ‘individuals’. All individual times/scores will be considered by the selector/s for the next round of competition. Individual competitors in this way have an equal chance of being selected into a team for the next round, depending on their relative performance.

Risk Management

Risk Warning Snowsports

Snowsports by their nature present risk to participants. Recreational activities including skiing and snowboarding, using lifts, snowtubing, tobogganing, and snow play involve significant risk of physical harm, including personal injury, permanent disability and/or death. Such harm may result from your actions, or the actions and/or omissions of others.

Parents registering their daughters for the MLC Snowsports program must be aware of these inherent risks.

The College’s commitment to this sport includes;

– The provision of information to the team and parents

– Team uniform co-ordination

– Pre-season strength and conditioning for Year 7-12 participants

– Interschools competition administration including all race entries

– Interschools on-snow race support

The Parent/Guardian’s responsibilities within this sport includes;

– Adhering to the MLC Parent Code of Conduct

– Assisting your child in adhering to the MLC Student Code of Conduct

– Ensuring the student’s ski equipment is in good working order and fit for purpose.

– Ensuring the student wears googles, and a helmet which are essential safety requirements.

– Ensuring the student has the appropriate amount and quality of clothing for the conditions.

– Ensuring the student is wearing sunscreen when relevant.

– Ensuring the student wears the MLC Snowsports ‘Soft Shell’ jacket at all formal Interschools Snowsports

Championships events such as daily medal presentations.

– Ensuring that the student is delivered to their race/s.

– Ensuring that the student is accompanied from the bottom of the race course back to the top of the race course in between race and competitive runs, or making an informed decision that the student can undertake these movements on her own or with peers.

– Ensuring that the student is supervised whilst free skiing/snowboarding,or making an informed decision that the student can free ski with others such as peers – students should not ski/snowboard alone.

– Ensuring that the student is assessed by ski patrol in the case of an accident or making an informed decision that the student can continue skiing/snowboarding.

– As soon as is practicable, reporting any accidents the student sustains to the Snowsports Manager.

– Reading and understanding the relevant ski resort’s Alpine Code of Responsibility and ensuring that the student shares in the understanding of those rules

MLC responsibilities for Snowsports participants

MLC does not provide:

– Transport or accommodation for team members unless indicated above

– Supervision of team members outside of Interschools Snowsports Championships events.

– Chaperone service to and from Interschools Snowsports Championships race courses. Team members must be able to navigate to the race courses on the mountain, or be accompanied to those locations by a parent or guardian.
