Going beyond

A WORD FROM OUR LEADERS

the build

At Brasfield & Gorrie, we’ve been guided by a strong commitment to doing the right thing since the very beginning.

Our company was founded on the Golden Rule, and that principle fuels our values, which we refer to as our SPIRIT (Safety, Performance, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Teamwork). Fulfilling our purpose of building exceptional people, trusting relationships, great projects, and strong communities goes far beyond making a profit. It’s about making a difference in everything we do.

We’ve created this Corporate Responsibility Report to highlight some of our intentional efforts to leave a lasting, positive mark on our employees, communities, industry, and environment.

Our teams are dedicated to providing industry-best resources and solutions to advance our company in these key areas. From our safety leaders who work to create injury-free jobsites every day to our learning and development professionals who focus on the growth and well-being of our employees, we know that building great projects and exceptional people goes hand in hand. We also believe that every employee should have a strong sense of belonging in the workplace that paves the way for opportunities to advance their careers.

We’ve pledged to support the industry beyond our doors by providing access to relationships, development, and projects for small and disadvantaged businesses. As we look to the future, we believe it’s important to understand and address the needs of the construction industry to ensure a bright future for a thriving workforce and a sustainable environment.

In all that we do, we want to use our resources wisely to be a force for good. Brasfield & Gorrie is on a long-term track to double in size, and we want to continue being intentional in our efforts to make sure our positive impact is growing along with us.

As you read this report, we hope you share our passion for making a meaningful mark. We’re excited to continue building with SPIRIT and further serve our employees, clients, partners, and communities for years to come.

CULTURE

Our

people are more than a workforce

3,600+ EMPLOYEES $50 million INVESTED ANNUALLY IN EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

“The opportunities that Brasfield & Gorrie gives us are unreal. Our field training program covers so many classes and provides a huge resource for us in the field. These programs are only getting better as they are constantly being tweaked and improved.”

We want to be a transformational part of our employees’ lives. That means being intentional about helping our people maximize their potential. From competitive benefits and compensation to personal and professional development, we’re always providing opportunities to learn, grow, and connect.

More than a paycheck

We’ve strengthened our employee benefits package by providing medical coverage for all employees from day one, increasing paid time off and our 401(k) match, and expanding our wellness incentive program. Additionally, we introduced Share Our Success, a new profit-sharing initiative that replaced annual holiday bonuses and resulted in paying out three times more than in previous years.

Nurturing new careers

Brasfield & Gorrie launched Cultivate in 2018, an immersive program designed to go beyond traditional onboarding with incoming employees. But Jim Gorrie didn’t want the program’s name to serve as simply a metaphor for personal growth.

So each Cultivate class receives an oak seedling to represent their budding career at the company, and then they’re invited back to Birmingham five years later to plant their trees at a local park.

“We

make an intentional investment in the professional and personal growth of our people. We want them to look back on their career at Brasfield & Gorrie as not just unique but life-changing.”

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

In 2023, members of the 2018 class celebrated the first of many Cultivate five-year reunions.

5

Expanding skill sets

We strive to be catalysts for career growth, and that requires a commitment to creating opportunities. For more than 25 years, we’ve provided free craft training for our field employees, and we’re constantly expanding and improving our programs. Our accredited courses include industrial carpentry, field engineering, supervision, qualified rigger training, and signal person training.

Brasfield & Gorrie’s educational outreach includes in-person classes, self-paced online training, skilled trades courses, and more. Over the last three years, our employees have completed more than 7,400 learning opportunities.

Learning and growing together

We all have a part to play when it comes to creating a better work environment. That’s why Brasfield & Gorrie enables all employees to strengthen their awareness of and commitment to a positive company culture.

We’re sparking crucial conversations around topics like leadership development and diversity and inclusion by offering programs like guest speakers, book studies, and a variety of other educational opportunities. When we empower our employees to get 1% better every day, we can make our teams stronger than ever.

“It doesn’t matter what your title or what your position is. If you’ve got the ambition and you want to grow and you want to learn, people are going to take that chance on you.”

You can hear more from Aiden and several of our employees in this playlist.

“I’m involved with the OWN committee and lead a diversity and inclusion group in Nashville. We’re a group that includes people from all walks of life. Sure, we know who we’re passing in the hallway, but there’s so much more to each of us than meets the eye. Sharing our stories not only brings us together but also makes us work better as a team.”

Elevating women in construction

Women are still outnumbered in the construction industry, and we’re doing our part to help close that gap. In 2014, Brasfield & Gorrie established the Operational Women’s Network to support women in operational positions

by helping them build connections, develop their skills, and advance their careers. Since that time, the group has grown to include more than 150 women in a variety of roles, from project managers to legal professionals.

Women represented 23% of our student program’s most recent academic year.

During a conference in Chattanooga, 150+ OWN members came together to make valuable connections and engage in professional development.

It’s not luck, it’s our controls

“Safety is a sacred promise extended to our people and our partners. That promise has many components, but at its core is the commitment to wake up every day and find ways to improve our safety by empowering our people and strengthening our controls.”

SAFETY
8 BRASFIELD & GORRIE | CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY REPORT
“It is no longer possible to be a ‘good builder’ without also being good at safety.”

Our safety philosophy boils down to one simple principle: People come first, no exceptions. It’s at the forefront of every plan, decision, and action we make. We’re responsible for everyone on our projects, and we take that seriously.

We currently boast an experience modification rate (EMR) of 0.55—nearly half the national average. And for the past 20+ years, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has ranked our company in the top three tiers of their Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) awards, recognizing us time after time with honors like Accredited Quality Contractor along the way.

Stuff That Can Kill You (STCKY)

Since the inception of safety regulations within the construction industry, the conversation has been focused on zero accidents. This intention is commendable but unrealistic. Modern safety management systems have helped drive down recordable incidents on

construction sites while serious and fatal injuries have remained relatively flat throughout the industry. Stuff That Can Kill You (STCKY) is based on anticipating failure through controls knowing that all of these kinds of incidents are a result of workers in close contact with stored energy.

Forecasting hazards

Brasfield & Gorrie teams across our footprint meet on a weekly basis to plan for activities that involve stored energy. Project leaders use our energy models to discuss and share how workers will interact with their jobsite environment. Because our workers operate

in dynamic settings and must account for constantly changing conditions, our project leaders are tasked with implementing controls that will mitigate the consequences of an uncontrolled release of energy.

10 BRASFIELD & GORRIE | CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY REPORT

When the risk of injury is at its highest, our project teams are at their best. We’ve implemented life-saving practices at every turn, and we’re constantly striving to make tomorrow even safer than today.

Hard barricades

When our crews are working around stored energy, our safety teams put strict controls in place. Whether the hazard is overhead work, moving equipment, or a fall from a leading edge, our team installs hard barricades in lieu of other styles of traditional barricades that are widely accepted in the construction industry.

Avoiding utility strikes

Thousands of accidental utility strikes occur on construction projects every year. These incidents could result in substantial property damage or serious injuries to workers. To avoid these events, Brasfield & Gorrie has adopted several key controls including dig permits, digital dig boards, and long-term above-ground utility markers.

Working toward a better future

$2.1 billion SPENT WITH 937 diverse vendors SINCE 2020

“Supplier diversity at Brasfield & Gorrie is all about access to opportunities, whether it’s local office employees, project information, or resources and training. Submitting a prequalification form and bidding work is just the start, but it can lead to exciting wins. None of that can happen without access.”

We’re competitive in our pursuit of great projects. But the construction industry is big enough for a multitude of companies with varying perspectives. When the playing field is leveled, we all win.

Equipping our peers

We measure our success not just in profits but by how well we support our construction partners. In 2019, we launched EQUIP, a program designed to provide resources for small and women- and minority-owned suppliers and trade contractors to succeed at a higher level. Whenever a trade contractor joins EQUIP,

Senior Supplier Diversity Manager

Jessica McMahan reaches out to make a connection so that we can better understand their goals and align them with resources.

Since its inception, EQUIP has grown from 150 members to more than 1,000 participants, which has increased our active bidding roster to more than 400 diverse companies.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: FS360

Recently, we worked with FS360, an Atlanta-based, Black-owned contractor with a desire to break into the Dallas healthcare market. After exploring opportunities to help prepare them to make a bid, we plugged one of their assistant project managers in on the Medical City Dallas expansion, where she learned critical skills and gained transferrable experience that will help the FS360 team win more healthcare work.

“We are

strategic in

the

markets and clients

we

seek, and the companies we partner with. Our partnership with Brasfield & Gorrie on the Medical City Dallas project is the outcome of years of intentional alignment. We hope this project will be the first of many in a long-standing relationship with the Dallas/Fort Worth market.”

Opportunities for future builders

Brasfield & Gorrie goes to great lengths to support future workers by meeting them where they are.

Eighty percent of our operations employees join Brasfield & Gorrie through one of our student programs—which means recruiting from a variety of schools is essential for company growth. In the last five years, more than 60 high school students and 1,250 college students have joined our team in a co-op or intern role.

We created our Campus Engagement Partner program in 2021 to cultivate meaningful relationships with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Through this program, leaders at our company are paired with representatives from these institutions to increase recruiting efforts for co-op and internship opportunities. We’ve established meaningful relationships with six HBCUs across our company footprint.

To help high school students learn more about opportunities in the skilled trades, we’ve formed partnerships with organizations like the Academy of Craft Training, Associated General Contractors (AGC), and the Architecture Construction Engineering (ACE) mentorship program.

RECRUITING EVENTS ATTENDED AT COLLEGES AND HIGH SCHOOLS IN 2023

In 2023, we hosted our first HBCU Summit where representatives from our partner institutions gained insights about the future of construction from our teams over two days in Birmingham. Brasfield & Gorrie has been a longtime sponsor of the AGC Georgia Skills Challenge in Marietta where thousands of students compete in events focused on skilled trades like carpentry, masonry, electrical, and more.

RECRUITING THE BEST

In this video, Dexter McKoy shares his pride in HBCUs, highlighting their crucial role and the importance of construction industry partnerships to create opportunity.

“A direct investment, doubling down on partnerships, and being intentional about the relationships we create with HBCUs... gives just this opportunity for someone like me to not just look forward, but to also give someone else something to look up to.”

Opening doors across communities

In January 2023, Pylon Building Group officially opened for business. Led by President Reggie Torbor, Pylon is currently operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Brasfield & Gorrie with plans in place to become an independent minority-owned company in the near future. As a full-service general contractor, Pylon strives to be an economic engine for members of overlooked communities. With several projects already completed and even more in the pipeline, Pylon is bringing a modern mindset to an age-old craft and creating opportunities for underserved groups in the process.

“Pylon aims to create opportunities and provide tools for success to our people, our clients, and our communities. We believe that the best ideas and solutions come from a team comprised of talented and gritty individuals from different backgrounds, and we are intentional in pursuing excellence through diversity.”

Planting the seeds for better building

Built environments can have a significant impact on our planet. It’s up to us to take a forward-thinking approach to the projects we build and promote a sustainable mindset among our ranks.

Our portfolio is full of LEED-certified projects

Thinking responsibly

The U.S. Green Building Council® has set the tone for responsible building practices with their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) standards, and Brasfield & Gorrie strives for LEED certification whenever possible. This includes encouraging our people to seek out LEED AP®, LEED AP BD+C®, or LEED Green Associate™ certification to solidify their commitment to sustainable solutions.

Personal well-being

Brasfield & Gorrie goes to great lengths to build modern structures with low environmental impacts and also consider the people who will soon fill the space. As the scope of sustainability has expanded to include employee well-being, we’ve integrated the WELL Building Standard® and Fitwel® building scorecards into our projects. These scores keep track of health issues like indoor air quality, access to daylight, and opportunities for mental relief and physical movement. Beyond the holistic benefits that come with achieving high marks in these metrics, we’ve seen that these practices amplify productivity on the jobsite as well, which can reduce project costs.

Good stewards for best practices

We promote sustainability throughout the company, including our B&G Equipment and Supply (BGES) subsidiaries. Our seven BGES sites have made significant progress in decreasing our carbon footprint by reducing fleet emissions. In fact, these efforts led to a recent Platinum Certification from the Association of Equipment Management Professionals Green Fleet program, making BGES only the second company to achieve this level of certification in the program’s history.

Our commitment to the environment even extends to the holidays. Since 2015, we’ve partnered with choice-based gifting company Loop & Tie for our corporate gifting needs while supporting their mission to reduce the clutter that comes with these gestures of appreciation.

Steel toes, warm hearts

From the very beginning, our founders made their mission to build strong communities a critical part of our company identity. More than 60 years later, we’re still going above and beyond what we do on the jobsite by giving back in numerous ways. Our people continually pledge their resources on an individual level to create a collective impact.

Increasing our collective impact

We’re always striving to build a culture of giving and service for our communities. In 2023, we combined our company-wide efforts into Impact Week, a time when employees across our 13 offices and 200+ jobsites join together for service projects and fundraisers. Additionally, the company introduced the BG2K Match Program, which doubles every donation to an office’s chosen organization up to $2,000 per employee.

As a result, we raised more than $2 million for our partner organizations.

Serving beyond ourselves

Since 2018, Brasfield & Gorrie has honored our longest-tenured employees through our Decades of Service program. Whenever one of our people reaches 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 years at the company, Brasfield & Gorrie honors their commitment to our mission by making a donation in their name to a nonprofit or charity of their choice. Since the program began, we have donated more than $230,000 to nearly 200 organizations on behalf of more than 1,600 employees.

Before we break ground on any project, Brasfield & Gorrie makes a pledge to be a good neighbor to the businesses, schools,

organizations, and residents around our jobsite. We take a proactive approach by sharing critical updates with anyone who’ll be impacted by our progress. Not only does this keep locals informed, it can increase excitement and engagement with the project. As we continue to build, our project teams often host private groundbreakings, jobsite tours, and other events to keep citizens in the know regarding our scope and timeline and answer questions as they arise.

From preconstruction to topping out, we’re not just visitors—we’re members of the community.

Working to support Brasfield & Gorrie’s corporate responsibility efforts is an ongoing opportunity. We encourage teams across our company to dig into the impact we make beyond the walls of great projects every day.

As the focus for corporate responsibility comes into a sharper view for many of our clients and construction partners, it allows us all to see the bigger picture more clearly. We understand how addressing needs, creating opportunities, building belonging, and being mindful about the future are helping shape a more inclusive and positive industry as a whole.

Our passion for our people, our communities, and our work goes far beyond the pages of this report. It’s deeply rooted in everything we do.
