MKE/53212 I N TROD U C T I O N RIVERWEST is one of Milwaukee’s most diverse, creative and active neighborhoods. It’s a place where almost anything can happen – RW24, a 24-hour bicycle race, an impromptu marching band, or a community garden school. It’s a neighborhood that cares about politics, sustainability and throwing a good party. You’ll find a community of artists, musicians, teachers, community organizers, gardeners, and cooperatives. Neighbors collaborate, celebrate, and create with each other. Riverwest is many things to many people, but most of all, it’s proud to be about community. Riverwest has its own monthly newspaper the RIVERWEST CURRENTS, a radio station RIVERWEST RADIO, a cooperative café and grocery store RIVERWEST CO-OP and bar RIVERWEST PUBLIC HOUSE, plus two great street fests LOCUST STREET FESTIVAL and CENTER STREET DAZE. The local business scene is steadily growing with various eateries, coffee shops, bars, art galleries, and specialty stores. One can buy a toy, a plant, a burger or a beer, Riverwest has something for everyone.
RIVERWORKS Milwaukee’s CREATIVE DISTRICT, is home to a growing maker market along with various industrial and serviceoriented businesses. Visit Riverworks via car, bus or the exciting Beerline Recreational Trail! The East Capitol Drive shopping district serves the east side, Riverwest, Harambee and the North Shore as the busiest corridor in the city. If you are hungry it offers both convenience as well as full service grocery with local and organic products. Old industrial buildings have been converted throughout the district as one can now find art studios, carpenters, and designers, along with various other small entrepreneurs. Each September the BID celebrates creativity with RIVERWORKS WEEK, consisting of a POP UP CAFÉ, DOLPHIN POOL entrepreneurial contest and the CREATIVE DISTRICT ALIVE party.
HISTORIC KING DRIVE is the economic and social heart of Milwaukee’s African-American community, this area is now the center of major redevelopment efforts. In the past 15 years there has been over $400 million of new development in the BID. Annual festivals such as JUNETEENTH DAY, GARFIELD AVENUE JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL, and BRONZEVILLE WEEK celebrate the strong roots of jazz and the arts in the neighborhood, and the main thoroughfare, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, is lined with a diverse collection of locally owned businesses including eateries, bars, and specialty stores. BID members, and the Harambee residential community are working together to cultivate a thriving community.

Picnic Fare When the long, dark winter is over, you better believe the people take advantage of nice weather by spending as RIV E R W E S T much time outside as possible. Restaurants bust out patio seating as quickly as weather permits, and people pick up to-go orders and pack picnics as much as they can (see our Retail Goods section for grocery stores so you can pack your own picnic lunch). If you want to grab a lunch to-go on your way to hang out at Gordon Park for the 4th of July, to watch a softball game at Pumping Station Park, or to hear a free show at the Skyline Music series, pick up a sandwich at the RIVERWEST FOOD CO-OP, SCARDINA SPECIALTIES, FUEL CAFÉ, or COLECTIVO-HUMBOLDT CAFÉ. Some of the non-sandwich options include tacos to-go from CAFÉ CORAZÓN, or a pizza to share from RIVERWEST PIZZA.
You can find a menu full of tasty entries (including shrimp and grits and honey habanero wings) at MI CASA K I NG SU CAFÉ. Over at RISE & GRIND D RIVE CAFÉ you can find hearty breakfast options til 11 am and URBAN BEETS CAFÉ & JUICERY is the place to go for a smoothie, gluten-free and raw food options. Another great place to get a sandwich to-go is COUSINS SUBS. The franchise was founded right here in Milwaukee RIV E R in 1972. Cousin’s charitable WORKS Make it Better Foundation supports a variety of causes and the chain uses some local and regional products. OUTPOST NATURAL FOODS has roots going back to 1970. Where Art Lives Art is not just loved in Riverwest, it’s a way of life and embraced around every corner, from creatively decorated porches RIV E R W E S T and yards, to local artist displays on bar and café walls. The RIVERWEST ARTISTS ASSOCIATION (RAA) operates THE JAZZ GALLERY CENTER FOR THE ARTS, which supports local art, music, and poetry. You can get a drink along with your art at the ART BAR and tour local galleries and artist studios in the summer GALLERY NIGHT & DAY and the RIVERWEST ART WALK in the fall. THE NUT FACTORY sounds like it should be in the food section, but they (along with other Riverworks studios like THE TOY RIV E R WORKS FACTORY and THE MILK PLANT) are buildings that host a vibrant community of artists. The building houses oil, acrylic, and watercolor painters, drawers, as well as sculptors, installation, and ceramic artists, according to Todd Mrozinski. One of

Nut Factory’s studio residents, Mrozinski is a painter and illustrator, MIAD graduate, and former Pfister Hotel Artist-in-Residence. Describing itself as an “urban laboratory”, non-profit organization REDLINE MILWAUKEE is a studio that mixes art, K I NG D RIVE education, and community. Some of their upcoming shows include The Modern Landscape: Celebrating Contemporary Perspectives of Landscape Artwork (June 7- July 6) and Timeline 2018: Annual Redline Artist in Residence Exhibition (July 20- August 25).
