" Automated Public Transportation Reshapes Cities "

Optimize roadways not for cars but for people in the future

With the development of 5G technology, our life will be interconnected with the network. For the early 21 century, the personal car has dominated that arena, shaping the streets and environments around it. But 5G technology enables cars to drive themselves by using sensor technologies and onboard computers. That means the automated vehicles can completely replace personal cars in the future, because they are safer and more efficient. This project imagines how we design the roadways, intersections and sidewalks if people use automated public transit everywhere. The land-based transit will aim at short-distance travel and automated vehicles could combine to form trains for rapid transit. The most obvious difference is significantly reduced lanes and wider sidewalk, which having a impact on surrounding land use and parcels. They will be transformed into green belts, parks or public space, changing not only how we move, but also how we live. Secondly, the new technologies to make lanes more flexible and give space back to birds or other small creatures whenever possible. Additionally, parking lots and parking garages could come obsolete. Then the land can become available for any number of uses. The project anticipates that streets will no longer be dangerous. They would be pleasant to walk around, conduciving to the types of welcoming urban space that encourage street life.

TRANSFER STATION

Can you imagine the traffic chaos and congestion here in the past, and the sound of car horns one after another?

Unimaginable! Nowadays, there is almost no need to wait to take the suspended express train through the transfer station. Wake up!

MATERIAL EXPERIMENT

Introduction

Aerated foam

This project, Aerated Foam, deales with a specific material. It's a mixture of water, glue, borax and glycerin. It is also known as a kind of gunge. This material has great stretchability and viscosity. When it is stretched to a certain extent, it will inject air, becoming more fluffy. This extracted product possesses elasticty and a cotton-like texture. This experiment aims to explore what kind of texture and shape can this material produce and made different construction. The project experiment with the aerated foam, combining it with borax and glycerin to adjust its hardness.

Ingredient Water, borax, glue and glycerin should be prepared before making this material. First, I mix the above four ingredients in equal proportions. Secondly, stir the mixture well until it becomes a white sticky substance. Then, due to the influence of different temperatures and climates, I will add either glycerol or borax to make the mixture sticky but not flowing. Finally, I imitate the action of making noodles and stretch the mixture dozens of times to make it fluffy. That's how I get the foam aerated.

MATERIAL EXPERIMENT Method: Stretch diameter

The process of stretching the foam

First test the stretchability of the material. Put the material on the table, gently squeeze it with a plastic plate, and then slowly lift the plastic plate. The above process is recorded in the figure above. It can be observed that the material has good tensile properties, and the greater the tensile height, the smaller the diameter of the material. Firstly, the above experiments prove that materials can be well created and can be used in large scale situations. Secondly, the good tensile properties indicate that the material has a strong continuity ,so we can make the model with a single material.

However, simple stretching is not enough to produce creative works, and more production methods need to be combined. How to shape is also a very important problem, need to use other ingredient to explore the best shaping method of foam materials.

Cube Framework

Aerated foam produces several different textures that can be clearly observed by simple stretching. The first one is a transparent film texture in which teeny bubbles are embedded. The second is a spider-web-like texture. The size of pores are random and there are evident differences beween single and multiple layers. The third type is a messy cotton wadding shape, which has the highest randomness and the most visually novel feature that gives a puffy texture of foam.

Having knew the base texture, I added frames to the foam. After I tried many forms,I found that square frames are the most stable and retain maximum texture clarity. All the resulting fragments have single or multi-layer texture, of which the reticular texture predominates. Because the location of texture generation cannot be completely controlled during the whole process, there is no identical fragment, which is extremely different from the previous parametric modeling. The foam production is more natural, reflecting the beauty of non-mechanization work.

Taking all of the material research and design exploration into account, I decided to combine the previously design languages and integrate them together to form larger scale structures. Firstly I explored a idea of foam box, which is a kind of facilities of landscape provides rest space.

In addition to the foam box, I explored to combine the individual boxes into a public building. The facades frame the scenery outside, enabling the building to be an excellent viewpoint.

" Reproduce Sound Of Mazu Culture "

Convert riverbanks into public spaces of cultural maintenance

Fuzhou is a coastal city of Fujian province, China. It on the north bank of the estuary of the Min River. People there have worshipped Mazu, a Chinese sea goddess, since ancient times. They believe that she roam the seas, protecting her believers from maritime disasters and blessing them with wealth. People in Fuzhou usually worship her in spring so they regard the sound of tides as Mazu's voice.

GENERAL PLAN Tianhou Temple

Hechao Bridge

Estuary

The Tianhou Temple was located in the river bend of Baima River, where loud noise sent out during the floodtime. People believed it was the blessing voice of "Mazu" the local patron saint, in ancient times. They call her "Tianhou" in Chinese, either. Then worshiping the Mazu became the custom of Fuzhou, and people still pray for peace and harvest when the tide rise.

"Hechao" means the collision of tides in Chinese. Hechao Bridge was built in Tang Dynasty. There is a recording in Annal of Fujian, saying that "The two tides are blowing and winding so an unque scene occured in the city."Today, the land around the Hechao Bridge is mainly residential area.

Ancient merchants in Fuzhou used to gather here. They traded or did other businiess aroud Baima Bridge. As Mazu's believers, they also regarded the sound of tides as her blessings. The sound near Baima Bridge was the loudest so people called it "Baima Tide".

In ancient times, the estuary was the largest place to see the tides and the loud crashing sound was regarded as the blessing of Mazu. Now there is a park where people can enjoy the beutiful scenes on Min river and other activities.

Mazu temple During the Qing Dynasty, Fuzhou merchants who were engaged in bussiness, prayed for the wealth here. This temple became a center for business groups and industries to discuss the city during business activities and exchange business information.

However, with the development of urbanization, hard revetment inadequately occupied riverbank. The river in Fuzhou is no longer dynamic, blocked by silt and waste. The sound of tides has disappeared as well. This project aims to convert the riverbank in Fuzhou into vibrant public spaces with cultural maintenance and tries to reproduce the sound of river, which memorize the Mazu Goddess and local culture.

Fuzhou is a famous city, which has the splendid history. It is located in the lower reaches of the Min River. The sound of the tide that was once regarded as the bless of Mazu has disappeared in the development of urbanization. It is a great loss of heritage in Fuzhou, people are trying to figure out the methods to bring the sound back.

Creat riparian buffers: Plant grass, shrubs, and trees along the riverbanks. Buffers combat erosion by stabilizing banks and regulating stream flow, and they offer habitats to many animals and plant species.

Sound device: Build an innovative dam on the river which has special device to make sound. Instead of the electronic music, It make natural sound, which can become the new sign of Mazu blessing.

Convert riverbanks

Since benefiting from the river, the whole city began prospering near the river.

Plants: The root systems of plants cling to the surrounding soil and create stability, reducing the amount of dirt which runs into rivers and gums up the works. The trees have some of the widest and deepest roots of all flora, and they help with greenhouse gas emissions to boot.

Flood barrier: The dam can solve the flooding problem efficiently, also protecting the heritage from the destruction of flood. This project aims to design a new dam that doesn't block the river.

STRATEGY

STRATEGY Diverging-flow dam

Exterior design The design of the shape of dams refers to the tesla valve. It' s also called a valvular conduit, a fixed-geometry passive check valve, producing a diodicity which leads to a difference in velocity for the different directions of the flow.

First flow

Secondary flow

Interior design

Vortices

① Stream

Air flow

Stream Outlet

For diverging flows, the pressure will increase along the flow. The pressure increase is called an adverse pressure gradient condition. As the pressure increases along the flow, fluid particle decelerates along the length And after a particular length, flow reversal could occur.

Outlet

Decreasing velocity

① : Air waves resonate in the resonator, depending on its length.

Air

Primary flow

② : The flow of air in the resonator contracts to pass through the whistle, forming a jet.

Piston

③ : The waves grow on the unstable jet in response to the sound waves in the resonator.

Left intake

When Applying this form to dams, it can effectively reduce the velocity of flow and reduce the risk of flooding.

Holed wall

Sound Spectrum

It's known that a sound wave has five features --wavelength, time-period, amplitude, speed and frequency. The higher the frequency waves oscillate, the higher the pitch of sound we hear. The frequency of the sound is determined by the way in which sound waves oscillate whilst traveling to our ears. The device adopts the principle of the whistle Holes of different sizes are made on the wall facing the water. When the air resonates through the pores, sound waves of different oscillation frequencies are generated. It means that sounds of different tones are produced.

To prove the feasibility of this method, I tried making perforated straight plates of different sizes, flushing them with the same flow rate of water, then recording the resulting sound. Computer software was then used to analyse their spectrum and waveforms, which reveals significant differences in pore sizes. This can suggest that, to some extent, the holed walls can make sound.

④ : The waves on the internal jet hit the holed wall causing vortices to form in the jet outside the whistle. Vortices radiate sound at the different frequency of the sound waves, leading to the whistling noise we hear.

The maximum current speed of the river occurs during spring ebb, and the minimum one occurs during neap flood. This means that the dams in different periods will produce different decibels of sound.

“ Stressrelieving Plaza ”

Renovation of Zhongguancun Square for relieving stress.

The Zhongguancun Plaza is located in Zhongguancun Haidian District, Beijing. It's a vital regional core location where innovative industries gather in Haidian District. Because the surrounding traffic is developed well and there are many colleges and universities, it has gradually become the educational center of Haidian District, including hundreds of educational institutions. Here you can see not only the tourists who come to shop, but also the employees and students of the company under great pressure. This design aims to relieve the pressure of students and youth groups through landscape transformation. In order to obtain real data, the design survey adopts the method of questionnaires to collect people's opinion, including their stress levels and ways to relieve stress. According to the existing research foundation of psychology and sociology, the design of plaza combines with the results obtained by data statistics. Different functional blocks correspond to the decompression methods required by the main population.
