lways at the forefront when it comes to architecture, this year Doha has been shortlisted for two global competitions. Among its 30 candidates, the Royal Institute of British Architects has selected the impressive Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies for the first edition of its international prize. Created by Mangera Yvars Architects for the Qatar Foundation, the facility’s futurist minarets and stunning light play reinterpret the Arabic-Islamic madrasa tradition. A winner will be announced by RIBA in
December 2016. For its 2016–2017 term, the prestigious Aga Khan Foundation, which recognises architectural projects of significant social and historical value to the Muslim world, has shortlisted the cylindric and already iconic Doha Tower by Jean Nouvel, which features Islamic screens of Mashrabiya design, as well as vertical and suspended gardens.
