RELIEVE FROM CITY CIRCLE

DESIGN PRACTICES FOR URBAN WILDERNESS

[Academic] [Individual Work] Minyan Wang [Area] 6150000 m² [Date] 2022.08-2022.10

The concept of urban wilderness feels like a paradox since natural and urban environments have long been viewed as antithetical. Today, however, wilderness is high on the urban agenda as a response to different challenges. This project located in the center of a circular railway in Chaoyang District, Beijing. The railway has been used to test the operation ability of new trains in the past decades. The whole site has a long history of railway industrial culture. However, the single function of the site and the construction of industrial infrastructure also cut off the relationship between the site and the external environment, making it gradually become a fragmented novel wilderness site with few people and dilapidated ecology. In this project, based on the theory of re-wilderness, I will continue the urban industrial memory, reproduce the wilderness ecosystem, and create a more harmonious and free coexistence between the city and the ecology in a low-cost, low maintenance way.

Urban Forestry & Urban Greening introduces the basic functions and types of ancient wilderness and novel wilderness. I abstract and summarize the three steps for re-wilding a city from the book, and these are the fundamental theory of my design process:

01
Supply for natural elements Enhancing opportunities Access to wilderness TIMELINE
Demand for wilderness Wild rivival THEORY STUDY

Over-development of cities has drastically reduced the area of wilderness, which is an inevitable result of urban development. China is in the development stage, and the land is being developed in large quantities. It can be seen from the pictures that the closer to the city, the lower the desertification.

SITE DEVELOPMENT ANALYSIS

1990S 2000S 2010S

Many farmers built their own houses as a place to survive, and the transportation was not very developed.

Due to the city expansion, many houses were demolished and the land is used for diverse industrial production and food cultivation.

The fragmented land increased, and the different parts were used as different functions, leaving the unrelated fragmented site behind.

SITE EXISTING PROBLEMS

RAPID URBANIZATION

Cities are expanding faster and faster, and the booming cities have brought huge flows of people and urban pollution.

LACK OF CONNECTION

The city has little connection to the art parks around the site and has limited places where the surrounding residents can move

FRAGMENTS

The development of the city was accompanied by the development and utilization of the land, and many land was divided into pieces and eventually abandoned.

STRUCTURES

The surrounding environment is chaotic, with farmland, urban buildings and private institutions scattered around. The site is occupied and divided by various temporary structures fragmentary land

The wilderness degree of the site gradually increases from outside to inside. The central area is a rain garden and wilderness forest. When the rainy season comes, the central area becomes a wetland, and when less rain comes in winter, the central area becomes a wilderness viewing area. The plant option is to add native plants and easily growing plants based on preserved plants, reduce maintenance costs, restore the wild state of the site, and also provide habitat for birds and other species.

REWILDING STRATEGY

YEAR 0 YEAR 1 YEAR 2

Clean up trash, plan pond locations, and create man-made natural terrain on top of the original terrain

Ponds were dug out to create wetlands and mounds were piled to simulate wilderness terrain. Plan the pedestrian route and keep the earth balanced

Water is injected into the pool, surrounded by native plants and new ones introduced

EDUCATION WITHIN A PARK

CHINA CHILDREN’S CENTER SITE UPDATE

[Academic] [Individual Work] Minyan Wang [Area] 91000 m² [Date] 2022.04-2022.07

With the development of society and the change of population structure, China has promulgated the three-child policy and started to encourage people to have children. However, how to provide better development space for kids and how to participate in the growth of preschool kids more reasonably are the most concerned issues for parents. At present, the teaching concept of kindergartens in China is more biased to the indoctrination of knowledge, and lacks the development of kids’ personality and nature, which is not benefit for kids’ physical and mental health. This design provides children with a more diverse and participative learning and living place. With the natural park as the carrier and the modular structure as the prototype, a new space has been formed that can fully release the nature of children, develop freely and no longer stick to the traditional unified teaching mode.

HISTORY TIMELINE OF PRESCHOOL EDUCATION IN CHINA

SITE CONTEXT ANALYSIS

The site locates in the representative China Children’s Center in Beijing, which was founded in 1982 as a scientific research institute for child development. It provides research and consulting services for children’s health care, nutrition, psychology, education, and other aspects. At the same time, as an out-of-school education base, it provides more skills education and training for children. However, even for such a state-shaped and comprehensive education base, its overall park planning is backward and monotonous. For children who yearn for nature and natural liberation, CNCC needs to serve as a model to keep pace with the development of the city and the update of educational concepts.

Under the concept that education is integrated into nature, the design transforms the CCRC outdoor venue from four strategies, takes the building block toys that can build the world as the prototype, shapes the whole venue with modular design language, and fully meets the multi-faceted needs of children’s curiosity, exploration, innovation and interaction

1. The modular structure can increase the spatial level and transform the plane into a three-dimensional structure, which not only has a stronger identification in terms of appearance, but also can see different scenery within the site in the corridor, providing a diversified view of the landscape.

2. The park is a combination of natural ecology and urban farm, where children who have been living in the city square with high-rise buildings for a long time can feel the original atmosphere full of local and wild interest, which is more conducive to children’s liberation of nature and relaxation.

3. The choice of plants and crops is to cope with the distinct four seasons climate in the north. The combination of solar term activities and collective activities permeates all aspects of art, science, labor and life. Guide children to explore nature and life actively.

URBAN WATERFRONT SPACE RENEWAL

PLAYGROUND PERSPECTIVE

The children’s playground in the park provides a place for shoppers to rest and wait while taking care of their children, as well as a children’s playground for the surrounding residents. There are leisure seats in the site, where parents can sit and wait and take care of their children.

The bambo-dominated walkway gives the impression of a Chinese garden, echoing the imperial gardens at both ends of the Kunyu River. Pocket Spaces are scattered along both sides of the walkway, providing opportunities for outdoor dining and conversation. The pocket space is relatively private, the promenade is relatively open, and the space is separated by bushes, which are hidden and visible. At night, the lamps emit light, guiding people’s direction, and creating an atmosphere of quietness and vitality.

The central plaza is the larger public space in the park, carrying the function of evacuation and gathering. The exit of subway station is located at the corner of the square. After coming out of the subway station, people can go to different places through the square, and also can have a simple rest on the square. Also, The plaza can hold diverse activities at different times, such as outdoor viewing, toastmasters, hypermarkets and so on.

EXTINCTION MUSEUM DESIGN

[Competition] [Individual Work] Minyan Wang [Area] 48000 m² [Date] 2022.11-2022.12

Dinosaurs are an unavoidable stage in every child’s passions. They belong to imagination before belonging to science. They are a trace of an incomprehensively distant time, of a different, wild Earth, of a still tumultuous and forming planet. Indeed, over the last 50 years there has been a loss of 69% of wild animal species. This confirms an irrefutable data: there is an ongoing new mass extinction, and the cause is fairly accurately mankind. However, if mankind started this, mankind can also stop it. The site is located in Pozzuoli , Italy. This project aims at imagining in the ancient crater of a quiescent volcano a museum to display the last mass extinction- the extinction of dinosaurs- and inform about the current threats for living species. So the places like Extinction Museum will become essential tools to raise awareness.
