President’s Report October 2014

As we approach the latter part of the club year, as President my thoughts turn to the subject of the Annual Club Awards. For a few years now the awards have been part of the Annual General Meeting which we conduct in March. This year however we will announce and present all of our awards at the December members meeting. The attendance at his particular monthly meeting has greatly benefited from the club’s appearance at the 4WD and Adventure Show in Novemeber, the subsequent visitors day also in Novemeber and from our largest member activity for the year The Big Valley weekend at Margaret River. It really does bring in our greatest attendance numbers of the whole year, and we thought it would be a most fitting environment in which to honour our deserving award winners. At the start of the year we made some changes to the club points system which is utilised to decide who has won the Club Member of the Year Award. Together with the implementation of the trip database system which records all trip and event attendances the allocation of points is carried out automatically when the actual member attendances are confirmed by the Trip Co-ordinator. In order to facilitate the preparation of the actual awards for presentation at the December meeting we will check into the database at the end of the points year which has been set as October 31st. The Club Member of the Year Award is decided purely on the level of activity, and subsequent points allocation, as recorded on our database system. The Ian Lockhart Memorial Award winner is chosen by a completely different method. Any member may nominate another member for an exceptional contribution to the club for the current award year. This award

procedure has also been varied recently to allow for the nomination of a family membership as well as that of an individual member. As President, I form a small subcommittee to deliberate on the nominations received, and a worthy winner is selected. Secretary John King has recently emailed all members with nomination forms for this prestigious award and I look forward to reviewing those nominations as they come in. Similarly the decision as to whom we award the Piston Broke Award to, is by nomination from members and I definitely look forward to reviewing those hilarious verses. I just ask that we let our infamous chainsaw experts off the hook this year !!! The remaining award, The Editor’s Photograph of the Year Award, or POTY Award, is selected by the Magazine Editor and is judged on the image that best represents the club’s motto “we’re outward bound”. The final selection of the annual winner is becoming much more difficult due to the ever improving photographic capability of our members. Good luck picking that winner Martin. President Peter

NEWS BEHIND THE MEETING 1st OCTOBER 2014 First time in a very long time ...no visitors to welcome. And site familiarisation ? Think we might know it by now..! Guest Speaker Extraordinaire.. Direct from his appearance at Telethon Power of Speech Awards: Long time junior member: Master Sam Ryan

On his subject of research: The Mitsubishi 4WD Owners Club WA Very good presentation , entertaining, complete with digs at his Dad Paul. President’s Report: Discussed were Member Sustainability, 4WD Show, December activity changes. The coming three months is historically a period of intense activity. Club numbers of members arriving and leaving have been evaluated and discussed and planning is in progress. Annual awards are to be incorporated into the December meeting. December meeting is planned to involve the Sponsors again. Secretary’s Report: Members are reminded that POTY and Club Member of the Year Awards are cut and dried but all members have the right to nominate anyone for the Ian Lockhart Award... And from now on a family membership can be nominated, not just a single member. Piston Broke Award also.... So get your nominations in ASAP. John suggested members read the committee meeting minutes from September ..some interesting developments.

The story came out on how last month’s supper had been enhanced by the five dozen muffins/ quiches left in the kitchen unnamed, but in reality there for the senior cits meeting the next day..we bought more for them....and following many requests for the cook’s recipe, it has been sourced and is available through John. Isn’t he the perfect secretary! And his recommendation to those on supper roster, if you see Master Chef food..it’s not likely to be ours...! Trip reports: Brunswick Tour with Paul Ryan. 13th September. I wish I’d think to tape his off the cuff reports. Always entertaining and always his trip is different. Of course mandatory bakery start, undulating hills, that lasted...only seven minutes...then mud and mud and Baby Bob’s Hill... then Bob’s Hill. All designed to test driving skills, aim, and how to balance on two? three? wheels. Dryandra Weekend: 26 -29th September. by Judith Brinkley. Totally sedentary. Biggest decision that weekend was not where we should put our wheels.. here? Or there? Or there? It was as exciting as... should we put the Club’s gazebo here? Or there? Or there? Very very relaxing and a recommended camp ground for future use. Another camp site was discovered during the drive to Boyagin Rock and was adjacent to Pumphries Bridge. A large area with flushing toilets, a sports ground and open tennis courts for kids to play in. Kaarakin Kleanup: 20th September , John King for Linda Bickerdike Linda’s report was in September magazine. A disappointing turn out from our club.. Only 5 to work but those who showed did an excellent job with what they could achieve. Upcoming Trips: Moore River 12/10 with Craig Parry I believe has been deferred and MCLEG is to become the month’s trip. MCLEG Environment Day Saturday 11th October. Stephen Kalynuik . A beach hop and a planting weekend with a camp over at Binningup for those who wish. Big Valley 14 - 16th November. Martin Archer. Trip full...Martin is willing to be bribed though..! Lancelin Day Trip 14th December is NOT THE VISITORS DAY. MIchael Gilbert Members only.. at least grade 4. Has done the trip a few times but always restricted by visitors inclusion. It will be challenging! SIDS & KIDS Rally Sun 5th Oct. EVENT NOW CANCELLED.. until the funds raised have been negotiated to remain within WA SIDS Organisation. Perth 4WD Show 7th - 9th November. Peter Fry. Members required to man our very successful stand (free entry) and to drive people around in test driving Register to help out at the 4WD Show CLICK HERE new vehicles (free entry), Members are encouraged to lead those visitors to our tent to all the elements of the display so they can gain a full impression of our activities and strengths...and fun we have. NB Webmaster is putting a link on our website for the volunteers to input their preferred time slots... but of course can be no guarantees. Peter then notified of an alternative event to go to on the cancelled SIDS day... An organised bike ride at Beverley for those of us dying to get active. Or actively trying to die? VISITORS DAY Sunday 23rd November.

Club Officers’ Reports: I.T. Rob advised he has installed a link on our website for the use of both: Trip leaders to see who has signed up for their trip ...and for members to see who else is going. Go to Members page Go to Trip Leader Box Go to Trip in question and you are there. With this hopefully we have the missing link for Trip Leaders to control their trip fore knowledge. NOVEMBER MEETING TO BE DIFFERENT: Peter Cole No chairs and tables. No walls and windows. We are out in the fresh air. A sausage sizzle DO NOT EAT BEFOREHAND. Club officer stations will be set up (or roving if that club officer keeps circulating) for questions and updates and general confab. A warning.. Peter Cole is Catering Officer..that means snags, bread rolls, margarine pthe! pthe!, onions and sauces. Baaaaasicccccc! We may do some fire training too. Not sure if that refers to the BBQ or an organised event. Turn up and you’ll find out. MEMBER’s FORUM: Gear box table: solar panels went fast. ANYBODY ELSE: Yeagorup Hut 21 - 23 November Trackcare Bruce Trackcare delegate advised a weekend away at Yeagorup Hut. Trackcare have been asked to help clean up the area. Probably a half day of cleanup and the rest playing on the dunes or swimming or whatever. Bruce and Judy intend going. Anyone else.? Park Fees are waived. A GARDEN PARTY with John and Rosalie King 19th October. Meet at Mt Helena Bakery ( where else!) bring your own lunch and spend a pleasant day. Essential Club equipment on the trip are doilies and tea cosies? And apparently roses make for very good traction surfaces under tyres. And that above interjected by ‘the great unwashed’ in our club...could have been their son?? Or maybe not. That was it for another night Bruce did the raffle for the Byworths who were still swanning around with Rick and Nancy Ellis’s Marshall Rock trip Members meeting 5th November Committee meeting 19th November.

Marshall Rocks and Wheat belt trip. Sept 26 to Oct 3 2014

We soon had the fire going and campers gathered around. There was another couple camped nearby and they also joined us.

By Rick Ellis.

Saturday 27th September The weather forecast wasn’t looking too good for today with strong damaging winds and rain forecast. As we contemplated this in the sunshine and warmth, it was hard to accept this to be true. Some of us took the short (7km) drive to Bencubbin to see what the town had to offer on a Saturday Morning. Peter Cole went on a mission to find a long lost family contact of 50 years ago. He was sent on a bit of a Wild Goose Chase by the locals and it seems that everyone knew “Jack”, but Jack was nowhere to be found. Peter Fry had researched some local Geocaches, and some campers ventured off to locate these. One was at our campsite and another was in town.

Friday 26th September 9 vehicles met at Marshall Rock campsite near Bencubbin on Friday night. By the time we arrived at 5.30pm some members were already there. Richard & Helen Kingston, Peter Cole, George and Linda Bickerdike, John & Lyn Byworth, Eddie & Robyn Chalk were all set up and the fire wood was stacked up ready. John & Kath Standen arrived at the same time as us and Michael Gilbert soon after. Last to arrive (after having burgers for dinner at Bencubbin Diner) was Peter and Lyn Fry around 9pm. The campsite had great facilities with a chemical toilet and several fire rings. There was also a shelter with some very informative signs providing information about the By about 10.00 wind was picking up and the local area. clouds above looked threatening, it seems that

the forecast was in fact accurate. Awnings were soon rolled up and loose items put away. The wind gathered momentum by the minute and

was soon quite fierce. Light rain came and went but the wind persisted all day. John and Kath (& Jacob) decided this was all too much in a tent and were soon packed up and on their way home. We all spent the afternoon seeking shelter in caravans waiting for the weather to subside. The wind and rain kept us all inside until about 5

pm when it settled enough for us to venture out. We soon had the firewood pile replenished and a good campfire alight. By 6.30 it was very still and you would not have believed the wind we had only an hour or so earlier. In no time we had all gathered around the fire and enjoyed each other’s company well into the evening. Sunday 28th September Today was a slow start with a short day trip arranged for an 11am departure. Peter had time to go back to town to locate the Illusive “Jack”. Alas ! He does exist and Peter was lucky enough

to catch up with him at the Rifle range. Vehicles formed a convoy and we headed off as planned at 11am. Our first stop was at the Pergandes Sheep yards and abandoned homestead. The sheep yards are constructed from sheets of granite that

have been stood upright in the ground to form fences and yards. Quite an amazing sight and

very interesting place. From here we travelled around dome of the local area before arriving at Koorda reserve for lunch. Some people took the walk trails while others just chatted. It’s quite interesting driving around some of these less travelled roads admiring the crops and other scenery. Along the way back towards camp we passed by a couple of historical sites and the abandoned town of Gabbin. Last stop was to locate the Geocache hidden in town. It was well hidden though I was lucky enough to find it. We arrived back at camp around 3.30 where it was decide to light up the “Big Fire” tonight in order to produce enough coals for several camp ovens. Again we enjoyed each other’s company, only this time it was around the “big fire”.

Monday 29th September. While the theme for the weekend was “No hurry” It didn’t seem too long before we were all packed up and ready to head off. Peter Cole and Peter and Lyn Fry were heading back to Perth while the rest of us (now 6 vehicles) were continuing on the “Wheatbelt Way”. Farewells were shared and on our way by about 10.30am. Our next stop was to be Beacon, a short drive of only about 40km. We weren’t too sure what to expect at Beacon given that it was a Public holiday. Some had anticipated an ice cream, though this was not to be as nothing at all was open. I had prearranged a stop at the caravan park in order to use the showers, for which we were all grateful. All scrubbed clean and water tanks refilled, we were again on our way by about 12.00. Our final destination for the day was to be the campsite at

others to find. In the afternoon we took a drive to the other side of the rock to explore “Montys Pass”, a 30m tunnel formed by a rock slide. There is a track to drive to a high point on the rock for those not able to otherwise climb it. Wednesday 1st October We were packed up and on our way by 9.30am for the next leg of our journey to Mukinbudin where we were booked into the caravan park. On our way we stopped at Wattoning Historical Site for a short while before arriving at Mukinbudin late morning. We were all impressed with the park and its amenities. We spent the afternoon at our leisure to explore the town, replenish fuel and other supplies as necessary. (and finally an ice cream) Tonight we enjoyed happy hour in the amazing camp kitchen and its facilities. Some other campers joined us for a while and a good social atmosphere was enjoyed. Thursday 2nd October. This morning 2 more campers departed the group as they had to head directly to Perth. Eddie and Robyn along with John and Lyn farewelled us. We left Mukinbudin at about 9.00am. Our

Elachbutting Rock. Along the way we passed through the abandoned town site of Bonnie Rock and we stopped at Beringbooding Rock for lunch. Some of us ventured up onto this giant rock which had a rock wall around the base to catch the water runoff and direct it into a huge water tank built in 1937. We later arrived at Elachbutting Rock by 2pm and camp was set in no time. It wasn’t long before wood was collected and again we gathered around the fire. This is a truly magnificent Rock. It is huge and as the sun goes down the brilliant colours of the red earthed area emerge. Tuesday 30th September. As this was such an amazing place, today’s “drive” was converted to a “walk”. Most climbed and explored the rock. From up on top of the rock you get a true sense of its size and real beauty. Michael found another geocache at the rock which was in sad condition, so after some “maintenance” it was returned to its location for

first stop was Mangowine Homestead near Nungarin. This site is under the control of the National Trust and is very interesting indeed. They were preparing for an annual concert the coming weekend which apparently attracts quite a crowd from far and wide. We all agreed that this is something worth looking into for next year. We then stopped at Nungarin where we visited the local museum. We were not aware of the significance of this area during the war. We then went to McCorrys Hotel which is an old pub being restored as a B&B, such a majestic old building and loaded with character. Continuing on, we later stopped at Trayning for lunch and soon after at Yelbeni museum. It was here that

Footnote: Much of this trip followed the organised trail known as the Wheatbelt Way. Along the way there were many points of interest and a lot of information. It is very well signposted and very interesting to follow. I recommend it to anyone who is interested is some of the WA pioneer history and enjoys a drive in the country. A great free guide book and CD is available as is plenty of information at www.wheatbeltway.com.au Rick Ellis 4 October 2014 an engine warning light persisted in Richard and Helens BT50 causing the vehicle to travel only in limp mode (60km/h). We took an extended stop in Wyalkatchem to allow it to cool down and as we continued we all reduced our speed in order to stay together. We arrived at Minnivale which was to be our final night for the trip. Minnivale is (yet another) abandoned town about 15 km from Dowerin. There is not much there but is appears to be a well-known stop over. This was evident by the number of caravans that were already there and set up by the time we arrived at 3.30pm. We soon found a suitable spot and set up for the night. Michael departed us here as he was heading to meet other commitments at Beverley. So there were 3.. It was quite windy so we decided against a camp fire and instead spent time chatting between ourselves and we were joined by another lady that had camped nearby who is from Brisbane and travelling alone. We all enjoyed a walk around the old buildings and pondered what would have been all those years ago. Next morning we were soon packed and destined for home. Richard and Helen left quite early as they faced the trip home at 60 km/h which could have made a long day. Also keen to get to phone service at Dowerin early so they could make arrangements for repairs asap. Then there were 2! George and Linda and ourselves left in good time with a plan to arrive at Toodyay Bakery in time for mornos. We said our farewell to George and Linda in Toodyay and headed for home. I thank those that joined us on this trip for their companionship and hope that they enjoyed it as much as we did.

CONGELIN CAMP GROUND DRYANDRA WOODLANDS. SEP 26 TO SEP 29, 2014 Trip Leaders McPhersons and Brinkleys Friday by Martin Archer Saturday to Monday by Judith Brinkey Friday As this was the start of the School Holidays, we were unsure whether there would be enough camping space for us all to fit in as a group. It’s a popular camping ground which is a ‘first in’ system. Fortunately the weather predictions kept the less adventurous at home allowing for plenty of vacant space. We arrived as the light was fading, but managed to set up the caravan well before dark. The McPhersons and Nakivilles had earlier pegged our claim to a corner of the camp ground and had a nice fire burning for our arrival. Everyone else was expected to arrive the same evening, so we prepared our evening meals and settled down around the camp fire in wait. This was after dealing with a large bull-ant nest near our caravan. The ants took exception to the ground being disturbed by tent pegs (to hold the awning down). Karen wasn’t happy to let the ants roam freely, and I must admit they were a bit scary in size. A pot of boiling water on the ant hole seemed to do the trick, but just to make certain, that was followed by a dose of petrol down the hole. We never saw another ant for the rest of the weekend. Later in the evening, what appeared to be a UFO came out from the depths of the surrounding woodlands. It wasn’t until it got closer, and the array of lights became distinguishable as headlights, spot lights and roof lights, that we guessed it was Glenn. It was not the conventional route to get to the camp ground and there was no access over the disused railway embankment. So Rob walked over to him to direct him in the direction of the main access road (that most normal people use). Sometimes it’s best to turn off the electronic navigators and just follow the road signs. With no phone coverage we were unable to contact the Brinkleys who failed to turn up that night. The last message we had recieved was that Judith had to work later than expected, so we assumed they had decided to leave their departure till the morning. This proved to be the case... Over to you Judith

Saturday Knowing that the small group, except for Bruce and myself were being looked after by co trip leader Bridget (and Bob) and already set up in sunshine on Friday, Bruce's question from the warmth of home on Saturday morning in the pelting rain...Can a trip leader stay in a warm bed and run a trip by email.? The group had arrived various times and routes to Congelin camp ground.. A very spacious well maintained flat area that although the brochure says the van section has spaces for only 8 van sites, there were at least 15 parked up and spread out very comfortably. Loads of firewood on hand . Clean odourless toilet. No FLIES. NO MIDGES. NO TICKS. Rain and strong winds were merely an inconvenience. Martin.....thinking outside his box, um caravan, had brought the Club's gazebo. Biggest decision for Saturday was where to site the gazebo..beside the concrete fire pit, upwind? downwind? over the top keep the rain off? Next big decision.. Gazebo sides..this way to the wind? Around the tree? That way to the

wind? No matter which way it still smoked us out. Saturday simply a day chatting with friends. Chairs out from cover when the sun shone.. back under when it rained.

Julie had brought some wooden puzzles and games to keep us from being totally brain dead...which then followed to sleight of hand and magical tricks. The Snow Peak fire pit came out to rival the concrete one ..well sort of.... Intents to order are increasing... Up to three now. No. We don't get a commission just cheaper freight. Sunday 10:30 drove to check out Boyagin Rock. Who said there's no camping there? Contrary to signage there were a dozen tents and couple of vans and dogs....AND FLIES..! Scaled the rock until the next dark clouds loomed.

A little 4WDing when we drove out the back way circling the rock and then returned towards our camp. Found another large free campsite at the new Pumphreys Bridge..old one could be seen collapsed further downstream. Adjacent to a CWA hall or similar with two sets of flushing toilets, an oval, unlocked tennis courts, kids climbing frame and loads of spots to set up. Back to camp. Glenn kept us supplied with goodies.... a successful sultana cake and a scrumptious loaf of bread that he said could have been better if it had been proved under a different brand bonnet. Monday we left as we came... at varying times and routes. This site has the advantage of direct bitumen almost all the way, or 2 or 3 alternatives routes through the countryside..and yes Wild flowers out en masse. Lots more to suss out in the area. We basically did nothing!! It was a gentle weekend with friends. Judith
