COVID-19 is still an ongoing part of our lives. Your support in the effort to battle COVID-19 through contributions to the Emergency Response Fund continues to make a positive impact for patients and staff at McLaren Northern Michigan. We are always grateful for your generosity and quick response. As we continue to fight COVID-19, donations to the Emergency Response Fund have enabled the Foundation to provide the vital supplies and equipment needed to adapt to treating patients with COVID-19. Last year, the Foundation disbursed $389,792 from the Emergency Response Fund for items that make a difference in patient care every day. The Sonosite Ultrasound Machine offers a stunningly clear picture to aid in the intubation of a patient’s airway. Thanks to generous donations, the Foundation was able to purchase an ultrasound machine to be used in the Intensive Care Unit. Thank you for supporting McLaren Northern Michigan in the fight against COVID-19.

“I want to extend my deepest appreciation to donors for their generosity. These critical tools will be used every day to provide the safest possible care to patients for a wide range of services. These include elective and emergent surgeries, cardiac procedures, acute trauma, pediatrics, and those patients requiring intubation due to COVID-19.” Andrew Bielaczyc, MD Chief of Anesthesiology 3

P H Y S I C I A N R E C RU I T M E N T A N D R E T E N T I O N Growing Our Services: Neuroscience, Urology, and Orthopedics. A common concern in our region and nationwide is the shortage of physicians. Your gifts are helping McLaren Northern Michigan address this issue. Over the past few years, the hospital has hired 49 new providers. With new providers, we can grow our services to serve more patients close to home. We are able to attract talented providers by offering provider recruitment incentives. Incentives included assistance with sign on bonuses, student loans, and state-of-the-art equipment. Through generous donations, we were able to purchase a Leica Fluorescence Surgical Microscope to aid in neurosurgery and a Mako Robot to aid in joint replacement surgeries. These two pieces of equipment helped us recruit several providers. We are fortunate to have had many providers join our team in 2021. Thank you for helping us grow our team to serve patients!

“The microscope has been an absolutely wonderful addition to our neuroscience department, and it will help an incredible number of patients during their brain and spine surgery. It also has features that have allowed the department to grow and offer more treatments that were not formerly offered here. It has truly brought a magnificent upgrade to our institution. Thank you for the donation, and please give my gratitude to all the donors for making this happen.” Justin Thomas, DO Neurosurgeon (Joined Team in 2021)

ONCOLOGY/INFUSION CENTER You bring comfort to Infusion patients. Patients in northern Michigan have access to proven cancer treatments minutes from their doorsteps at the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Northern Michigan. Your support enables expanded clinical capabilities, trials, and research, as well as a collection of life-saving treatments and therapies, such as radiation therapy, infusion therapy, and surgical interventions. In 2021 your gifts provided crucial equipment, educational materials, and supplies necessary to help patients throughout their cancer journey. Because of generous donors like you, our Nurse Navigator Program has been able to assist 356 patients with new breast, lung, or head and neck cancer diagnosis through their cancer journey. By offering education, support, and guidance, the nurse navigators are a lifeline to cancer patients.

“I continue to be amazed at the support of our donors who want our patients to have the necessary resources to provide comfort on their cancer journey. The staff and I are so grateful!” Tami Hightower, BSN, RN Medical Oncology Manager

PAT I E N T A S S I S TA N C E F U N D S You provide care for patients beyond their medical needs.

930 patients received assistance through the Patient Assistance Program in 2021

Did you know you are helping patients through our Patient Assistance Program nearly every day? Nurses and physicians contact us with requests to help their patients with needs that aren’t covered by insurance. The type of assistance varies per individual. It may be gas cards so a patient may make it to vital medical procedures or it could be a small medical device that improves the quality of life for a patient. Whatever the situation, you have been there to help our patients in their moments of crisis. One such patient is Tommy*, a toddler who broke his leg. Tommy needed surgery and a special cast after the procedure. Standard car seats do not accommodate these specific casts. Because of your donations, we were able to purchase a specialized car seat for Tommy. This allowed him to have his surgery here and to go home the same day, much to his parents’ relief. Thank you for making the difference in Tommy’s experience. (*not his real name)

“Your generosity is humbling and so very much appreciated. Thank you for helping us when we needed it most.” Grateful Patient Family 11

H E A RT A N D VA S C U L A R Leading the way in medical excellence. Your donations help cardiac patients every step of the way through their heart health journey. They could start their journey by using a specialized vascular exam bed, which allows for proper positioning of a patient for testing. If they need surgery, a new surgical stool may be utilized by their surgeon to combat fatigue. After surgery, the patient might use a heart-shaped pillow for comfort while healing. To keep the patient on the path to wellness, they may also receive a Mediterranean Meal Plan book to aid in their rehabilitation through a healthy meal plan. Exceptional cardiac care, from diagnosis through treatments, is available thanks to the support of generous community members like you. Your gifts make award winning heart care available close to home.

E D U C AT I O N Thank you for investing in our future caregivers. Your generous support of educational scholarships continues to make a difference at McLaren Northern Michigan. Your gifts are helping to fortify the skills of our clinical staff and empower extraordinary caregivers to pursue higher education.

The Foundation disbursed

$160,808 to 91 scholarship recipients in 2021.

Scholarship recipient Heather Columbo, BSN, RN, a nurse in the Petoskey Emergency Department, is working diligently to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). She is excited to become a primary care provider with a focus on endocrinology. Heather’s plans include continuing on at McLaren Northern Michigan so she can serve the community she loves.

“Thank you so much for your generosity and support of the educational endeavors of nurses such as myself.” Mary Frazier, RN Scholarship Recipient 14

“I would like to thank you for all your support with my education. I could not do it without you! Your generosity allows me to focus on school so I can be a better provider to patients in the future. Thank you for making this possible!” Heather Columbo, BSN, RN Scholarship Recipient 15

MCLAREN HOME CARE & HOSPICE Thank you for providing end-of-life care through Hospice. You recently provided Edith*, an 87-year-old hospice patient with a little bit of joy. Edith lives in an apartment with her daughter, and a hospice nurse visits her at home. She experiences limited mobility, but loves spending time outside. She shared with her nurse that she missed hearing the birds. Thanks to donor support, we were able to purchase a comfortable chair and table for Edith’s balcony so that when she is feeling well enough, she can sit outside and listen to the birds. Your generous gifts provide relief for patients and their loved ones as they face end of life. Hospice is there to provide support even if the patient is uninsured or underinsured. Last year, hospice served 1,002 patients in 11 surrounding counties. Because you gave, these patients were able to receive the support and care they deserved during their final days. In 2021, the Foundation disbursed $641,215 to support operating expenses for Hiland Cottage, Cheboygan Hospice House, and McLaren Home Care & Hospice. (*not her real name)

Hospice workers are committed to making an impact on the lives of the patients they care for and their families.

“Hospice caregivers helped my entire family. They treated us with compassion and kindness. They helped us navigate the process by talking with us about everything that was happening. We were blessed to have them those last couple of weeks.” Hospice Family 17

Patients and their families are now benefiting from exciting features of the new wing including private rooms, smart technology, modernized operating rooms, and calming artwork. The impact of the new wing is immeasurable in McLaren Northern Michigan’s ability to provide superior care to every patient who needs us.

The new surgery level has enhanced lighting programmable to surgeons’ preferences, ceiling mounted surgical booms to keep equipment and cords off the floor, and multiple high-resolution monitors.

“We are especially appreciative of the improved visualization provided during endoscopic procedures. Additionally, the technical advancements in the new operating rooms provide opportunities for an expansion of the services compared to what we have historically offered.” Trina Kline, MBA, BSOM Director of Surgical Services 19

PLANNED GIVING In 1991, Marv and Betty Blandford established a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) and named multiple local nonprofits as beneficiaries, including McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. After Marv passed away, Betty moved to Florida full time but their commitment to this region never wavered. On a frosty morning this past November, Betty and Marv’s son made a special trip to McLaren Northern Michigan to hand deliver the proceeds from the trust established 30 years prior to benefit both Hospice and Oncology services. “Charitable bequests like this help to ensure high-quality, compassionate care is available throughout northern Michigan now and in the future,” said Julie Jarema, Chief Philanthropy Officer, McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. “We are grateful to Marv and Betty for their generous commitment to our patients.” A planned gift is a great way to help secure the future of high-quality health care in northern Michigan. Simple arrangements can be made in a will or trust, or with a gift of life insurance or retirement assets. For more information, please call us to speak with a team member.
