How The Breezeway Mile Signs Work :-)

So, for example, East Jordan is at Mile 12. (See illustration.)

When approaching East Jordan from the west (Atwood), you will see a 12 at the gas station on the corner of C48 & M66 because this is the beginning of Mile 12. On the other side of this same sign is the 11 mile marker, because if you’re traveling west, you are beginning Mile 11.

Now, continuing east through East Jordan, you will see 13 near the corner of C48 & M32, because this is the beginning of Mile 13. On the other side of this same sign is the 12 mile marker, because if you’re traveling west, you are beginning Mile 12.

Art Walk

www.jordanartwalk.org

The Jordan Art Walk is a series of sculptures strategically placed between Sportsman's Park and Memorial Park, integrated with the beautiful ‘Joining Jordan Boardwalk.’ The project began in 2021 and sculptures have been added each year - some for sale, some not. Beginning next year, those sculptures that are not permanent pieces in the Art Walk will then be rotated out so that this will become an evolving exhibit.

This is also your chance to get outside, exercise, and enjoy East Jordan's natural beauty. Our brochure provides the distance between each sculpture both distance and steps. Walk the full path and travel 1,776 feet (that’s equal to 1/3 mile)!

And don't miss the outdoor Earth Tones Musical Garden where you can explore instruments made of stone, wood and metal.

If you enjoy the natural world, explore the Watershed Model with its waterfall, wetlands, springs bubbling up, and the rivers leading down to a small lake. Take the wetlands boardwalk to a Pond full of frogs for catch & release and viewing platform on the bank of Deer Creek.

Fun Along the Breezeway

The Jordan River

The 24.9-mile-long Jordan River is the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. Its headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program and is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and scenic canoe, kayak and raft trips. The river is accessible by many roads & trails.

Lake Charlevoix

Lake Charlevoix was once voted the second best lake in America in a USA Today poll, behind only Lake Tahoe. Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles!

Chain of Lakes Water Trail

The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers.

The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Begin, end or pass through three lakeside communities - Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellairewhere you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities.

The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers. Explore the Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. In Bellaire, Alden, and Elk Rapids you will find all you need to enjoy your time on the water. Don't forget Paddle Antrim Sept. 14-16 www.paddleantrim.com

Little Traverse Conservancy

The mission of the Little Traverse Conservancy is to protect the natural diversity and beauty of northern Michigan by preserving significant land and scenic areas, and fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment. Our service area includes Chippewa, Mackinac, Emmet, Cheboygan, and Charlevoix counties.

Maps can be found on the website, at local Chamber of Commerce offices, or by mail (call the Conservancy at 231-347-0991 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MondayFriday). The Conservancy also offers a number of guided hikes and other activities throughout the year, so check the website: www.landtrust.org.

Jordan Valley Pathway

Explore Area Preserves:

Rogers/Dressel/Jordan River Preserve: From downtown East Jordan, travel northeast and then south on M-32 for 1.3 miles to Rogers Road. Turn right and the preserve is 1/2 mile down on the right.

Raven Ridge Nature Preserve:

From downtown East Jordan, travel east on C48 approximately 3.5 miles to Pearsall Rd. Turn right, then immediately turn left onto Fuller Rd. Turn right in about 1.5 mi.

St. Clair Lake/Six Mile Lake Natural Area:

From Ellsworth, take C48 east approximately two miles to South Arm Township Park and a small parking area on the right (south) side of the road. There is a rustic boat launch on the river.

Nathan Beem Memorial Nature Preserve: 105 Acres with 1,880 feet of shoreline on the east side of Six Mile Lake.

The Jordan Valley Pathway is an 18-mile hiking trail in the Jordan River Valley. The pathway winds through the Mackinaw State Forest along the Jordan River. This scenic valley is well worth a trip in any season, however fall colors are noteworthy due to its rich hardwood forests. Its looped trail system is mixed with moderate to rugged topography, providing excellent opportunities for hikers and backpackers. The full pathway is a good two-day hike. Backpackers can stay at the Pinney Bridge State Campground, located near the trail’s halfway point (dispersed camping is not allowed in the Jordan Valley). Hikers can conveniently start and end at the same place if completing a smaller loop or the whole trail. This trail houses four different trailheads that allow access to the pathway, with the main trailhead located at Deadman’s Hill Overlook. No biking is allowed on the Jordan Valley Pathway.

2008 - The Beginning 2009 - The Announcement Article

Built upon a foundation of belief, dedication, passion, and the findings from the “Chain of Lakes” Marketing Study, the “Breezeway” communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood are off to a fabulous success in their pursuit of branding and marketing their spectacular “well-kept” secret region located in the northwest section of C-48 in Charlevoix and Antrim counties, as a household name and vacation destination.

The “Breezeway” boasts scenic overlooks, great motorcycle & bicycle rides, recreational amenities galore, working farms & orchards, artist galleries, resale shops, lodging facilities (cottages, campgrounds, B&Bs, motels, and a resort), retail & service businesses with superb customer service, and an epicurean’s selection of dining choices along the route.

This very “home-spun” natural area was the recipient of the State of Michigan’s Center for Regional Excellence $25,000 grant to continue to expand and grow the already successful volunteer marketing efforts of the “Breezeway Task Force.”

Made up of community leaders, business owners, local officials and residents, this zealous group of individuals meet monthly to report and brainstorm on the several committees and projects being coordinated or developed. Special events including the “Breezeway Cruise” featuring automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles held the third Thursday in June which will be launched this year; Farmer’s Markets in both East Jordan and Ellsworth continue weekly throughout the growing season; the Jordan Valley Freedom Festival and the Ellsworth Pig Roast are both celebrated on the third weekend in June annually along with individual holiday celebrations. Business workshops and networking events are jointly organized by the East Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce, which proudly represents the “Breezeway” communities.

New for 2009 is the addition of the beautiful “Breezeway” logo signs that line the C-48 Route that links the three unique partners together.

What Happens on The Breezeway: Then & Now

Late in 2009, the Breezeway Task Force held a series of get-togethers at township halls to officially introduce and explain The Breezeway to area residents. The meetings included a t-shirt give-away to one lucky winner.

City of East Jordan

Where River, Lake and Friendly People Meet

In addition to City Hall operations, the East Jordan city government departments include 24-hour police protection, a devoted volunteer fire department, public works that includes public water and sewer services, parks/recreation, membership in the Jordan Valley Ambulance Authority and a very active Downtown Development Authority working on multiple projects and partnership efforts.

East Jordan is very proud of where we’re going and where we’ve been. Teamwork is a key component in everything we do. Leadership and collaborations between organizations, businesses, schools and government operations are strong in East Jordan and continue to build a resilient community.

Banks Township

Banks Township is a rural jewel in the north end of Antrim County. The spring and summer months bring a gorgeous green to our rolling hills; the Chain of Lakes provide ample water recreation opportunities; and winter offers up a crisp change of scenery on the lakes. Play on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Banks Township Park or walk and bike ride the non-motorized trails at Antrim Creek Natural Area. Whatever your recreational itch, Banks Township is a great destination to scratch it.

Village of Ellsworth

Founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, Ellsworth is located on the scenic Breezeway and Chain of Lakes. If you are seeking a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons.

Atwood

Atwood is home to several farm markets, a winery, 3 restaurants, a John Deere mecca, a motel, a famous tiny chapel and an 18-hole golf course. Oh, and a 156-acre public natural area is located on Lake Michigan which has some of the best sunsets in the State!

Chip & Sara

After serving the Charlevoix County Community Foundation as president for the past 13 years, Chip Hansen retired at the end of April. During Hansen’s tenure as president, the assets of the community foundation grew from $19.4 million in July 2010 to more than $55 million today. The number of charitable funds has grown to 330. Total grants and scholarships have increased from $1 million to more than $2.5 million annually. More than 80 Legacy Society members have been added as well, and these future gifts will ensure that the community

foundation will continue to work at the intersection of resources and opportunity well into the future.

The Foundation Board of Trustees selected the Foundation’s vice president Sara Ward to succeed as president effective as of May 1, 2023. Ward has distinguished herself in 15 years in the field, including 7 years at the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, as a thoughtful, innovative and collaborative leader with a passion for community philanthropy.

Don & Eileen Klein Nature Trail ... Coming Soon!

Imagine getting up close to the Jordan River without hip waders or a canoe.

The new Don & Eileen Klein Nature Trail will be built with innovative boardwalk materials that allow a trail to cross a wetland without harming the natural environment. Starting at Sportsman’s Park, the new trail will continue past the Friends of the Jordan Watershed Center and then curve out across the edge of the river, returning to dry ground at the railroad grade trail of the Rogers Family Homestead Nature Preserve. Completed in partnership with the City of East Jordan, the East Jordan Trails Group, and Little Traverse Conservancy, the trail is planned for completion by Fall, 2023. A lead gift from Don Klein along with the support of several other donors is making this trail a reality.

The East Jordan Middle School Shoe Club's goals are "to dream big, set goals, work hard and give back to the community."

A few years ago, Matt Hamilton, the East Jordan Public Schools teacher who started the Club, thought it would be a really cool idea to get some shoes from people who, in their lives, had dreamed big, set goals, worked hard and given back, as role models for his students.

The Shoe Club has about 160 pairs of shoes from athletes, scientists, astronauts and other history-makers. Here are some of the Club's most recent, exciting additions:

Jordan Valley Honor Star / Grand Army Republic Park

The Grand Army Republic Park located on Main and Williams Streets in East Jordan is undergoing a major renovation this year by the American Legion Post #227 Rebec-Hosler Sweet Post. A newly landscaped park will feature a new gazebo, new display of military flags and the Jordan Valley Honor Star.

Jordan Valley Honor Star, a 1300 pound stainless steel sculpture, was made by the East Jordan High School welding class students this past school year as part of the Jordan Art Walk Committee’s “Artist in Residence” Program. The star will be a permanent sculpture in GAR Park to honor our military veterans. The magnificent sculpture was made possible by a grant from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and a Crowd-Fund Campaign conducted in September 2022.

Ellsworth Community School

Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “Big School Opportunities, Small School Relationships” summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School.

With a small student to teacher/staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size, including; free developmental pre-school, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/ art/physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts, agriculture, and building trades.

Ebenezer Christian School

Ebenezer Christian School in Ellsworth, founded in 1945, is a non-denominational school. Our Preschool was founded in 2002. The preschool uses Zoo Phonics which is a method developed to make children strong readers at an early age. Our students use iPad’s during the school year which are integrated into their curriculum. The teacher incorporates online learning in all subjects and utilizes apps that are created specifically for education. Though we are a small school, we offer a great education in a loving environment and strive to be an extension of the home.

North Central Michigan College

Since 1958, North Central Michigan College in Petoskey has been opening the door to academic success for residents by offering two-year associate degrees in the arts and sciences that are transferable to upper division colleges and universities. In addition, North Central has paved the path to better-paying careers through its applied science programs in business, education, health science, criminal justice, information technology and manufacturing. Equally important, North Central provides a second chance for residents by advancing their skills, switching careers or just getting more from life through higher education.

East Jordan Public Schools

Building a foundation with a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust, our goal is to provide our students with experiences that will last a lifetime... and memories to share forever. EJPS comprises a vibrant part of the community and takes its job of educating East Jordan’s youth seriously. Thanks to our generous community, the district was recently able to upgrade infrastructural items, replace technology, provide secure entry ways, replace buses, and overhaul the high school gym.

In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition, East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses, and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply.

While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also recognized that in order to prepare our students to be well-rounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best.
