Welcome to Term Four at the Mitchell Conservatorium! Welcome to term 4 at the Mitchell Conservatorium Facing the final term of the year, it’s time to focus on the remaining events for 2015, to announce a few changes, and promote some exciting new initiatives for 2016 and beyond. Please see page 10 for our full list of Term 4 events. A few farewells… After a little over three years, Andrew Baker is saying farewell. Andrew has been quite an asset to MitCon, in both the Lachlan and Bathurst studios, as violin teacher, orchestra conductor, and Lachlan Director from mid-2012 to December 2013. Andrew’s final MitCon duty was celebrated just a week ago as codirector of the Adult Strings Workshop in Bathurst. We wish Andrew great success as he refocuses his efforts, and we’re sure our professional paths will cross again before long. One other surprise change to the team in Bathurst was the loss of Aaron Hopper. After nine years of inspiring students with his musicianship and artistry, Aaron has relocated to Western Australia on a new adventure. Again, all the best to the Hoppers, and I look forward to catching up when he returns, albeit temporarily, to feature in this year’s Inland Sea of Sound festival in November (see page 6 for more info).
Some welcome developments… While Aaron Hopper’s departure was unexpected and caused sadness in the community, we were lucky enough to attract Andrew French-Northam onto the team without any loss of teaching weeks. Andrew is a talented, experienced and highly qualified guitarist and teacher who has fitted in to the team swiftly and effectively. Welcome Andrew, and thanks for a great start! Also commencing this last term as Brass teacher is Paul Smith. Paul took up the role of Music Director for the Lithgow Community Orchestra last term, and from this term on, he will also conduct the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra. So three times over… Welcome Paul! Even more to sing about… We have just partnered with the Bathurst Parkinson’s Support Group to form ‘the shakers’. This is a new choir that will focus in the short term on preparing for its first performance at this year’s Carols by Candlelight in Machattie Park on December 13. The group rehearses fortnightly on a Monday from 1-2pm and membership is FREE! Singing in a choir is a wonderful activity for people with health issues, and has particular benefits for Parkinsons sufferers including

including prolonging the capacity for clear verbal communication. As an aerobic activity, it is also enormously beneficial for breathing; it promotes the maintenance and development of neural pathways and is a great social activity as well. For more information, contact me directly. Rehearsal dates for this first season are as follows: September 28, October 12, October 26, November 9, November 23 and November 30. The Shakers’ motto is ‘singing for wellbeing’. So if that time works for you… Come along and join the fun. No experience necessary! Some important community events coming up in the next few months – Don’t Miss Gil Sullivan and the BCO in the BMEC City Hall (Bathurst) October 3. Gil, an internationally renowned piano soloist, will be giving the new Yamaha Grand Piano a workout, leading our own Bathurst Chamber Orchestra in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 27. Bathurst City and RSL Band farewells their Musical Director of 25 years, Matthias RogalaKoczorowksi, with its 130th Anniversary Festival on Sunday November 22 in Machattie Park. School and community bands from Bathurst and the region have been invited to take part in the free all-day event, playing on a roster in the magnificent heritage Rotunda next to the Fountain, starting at 10.30 am. Festivities will conclude with a free concert given by The Royal Australian Navy Band, from HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney, in the BMEC Theatre at 5 pm. Another new partnership and access to an exciting new course…of course! From first term 2016 Students will be able to undertake a Diploma of Music through Central Queensland University’s partnership with MitCon and other Regional Conservatoriums. I have been involved in the delivery of the one-to-one instrumental and vocal tuition for this course in its trial year, through Riverina and Murray Cons, and from next year, MitCon is officially on board! See the flyer on page 11 for more details. This is a terrific development and I would encourage school leavers and mature age students alike to take advantage of this wonderful (HECS-funded) opportunity. What do musicians do? – they PLAY The Bathurst Musicians Collective is a new initiative that will provide an opportunity, every month, for just that. Any musician over the age of 18 is invited to come along, ANY instrument (including voice), ANY style, ANY level. Final Sunday of the month, 11:00am – 2:00pm. Orchard Room. Is it a Jam..? sure. Will any muso over the age of 18 (insurance reasons) be welcome? Absolutely. When will it start? Sunday November 29. And a few last items… hot off the press… Always proud of our ex-students; Veronica Milroy’s choir from Queanbeyan Public School recently won first place in their section at the Australian National Eisteddfod. Current student Xavier Haynes - youngest entrant in all his sections, received 2nd in 9 years/u, 3rd in 10 years/u, 1st in 12 years/u, HC in the Open in the Orange Eisteddfod and more great success in the Bathurst Eisteddfod. Zachary Haynes won the Bathurst Eisteddfod 12 years and under Junior Piano Scholarship with 98 points! Celebrate with MitCon! Internationally renowned concert pianist, Gil Sullivan, is here in Bathurst in October for a piano performance celebrating the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. On Saturday 3 October, the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra will join Gil Sullivan at City Hall for a concert of musical exuberance. Gil Sullivan is Australia’s only resident full-time concert pianist and regularly tours extensively worldwide. He has given recitals in New York’s Carnegie Hall, as well as a number of opera houses and national concert halls worldwide. While he is in town, Sullivan will also be hosting master classes and private lessons through the Mitchell Conservatorium. This will give students and teachers the opportunity to learn from a man that Südhessen Woche of Germany has described as “The finest interpreter of Mozart in the world.” Gil Sullivan in Concert is the first professional outing of City Hall’s new Yamaha grand piano. This piano was purchased in a joint project between the Mitchell Conservatorium, Bathurst Regional Council and the Bathurst Eisteddfod Society. Duocracy Duelling pianists Cindy Fox and Michelle Griffin duke it out over a hot keyboard. Although these two have known each other since high school and worked together often, this is their first outing as a duo. Selections include Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Bizet’s L’Arlésienne Suite Number 2... and more than a few surprises! From Beethoven to Brazil Concerts in historic churches of Western NSW with Georg Mertens on cello and Giuseppe Zangari on guitar. Inland Sea of Sound Festival 2015 A music festival featuring leading local, national and international musicians encompassing a broad range of musical styles.
