JUNIOR LEAGUE OF JACKSON COMMUNITY PROJECTS

For over 80 years, Junior League of Jackson (JLJ) volunteers have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life of those in our community. We do this by building partnerships with community organizations and developing shared solutions and projects that provide better health, education, welfare, and safety for children and youth.

To ensure our volunteers’ service has a maximum and measurable impact, the League uses an issue-based community impact model to select its projects. This model requires the League to identify critical needs in the community. Then, volunteers are matched with projects in these areas, enabling our members to serve where they can make the most significant impact. The League currently focuses on three key areas: academic growth, essential needs, and health and mental well-being with the goal of supporting children and their caregivers in the Jackson area to increase student success.

Our membership works year-round with our community partners on more than 30 issue-based projects throughout the Jackson metro area. Almost 2,200 members provide more than 55,000 volunteer hours each year, giving their time and talents to help build a stronger community. Your support of Mistletoe Marketplace 2024 is crucial to the continued success of the League’s community projects and, ultimately, the thousands of children and youth they benefit.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH PROJECTS

The Children’s Health impact area uses strategies that provide access to nutritional foods and increase knowledge of the benefits of healthy eating and being physically active. Efforts in this area include a pantry program, education series, and activities that promote movement and physical fitness. Projects in the Children’s Health impact area include the following:

Volunteers assist with monthly educational programming for families of children affiliated with Operation Shoestring.

Early Literacy volunteers work primarily with elementary school students, exposing them to language and print resources to help them read at grade level. Volunteers operate a merit-based store for CARES school students, prepare welcome baskets, and invite guest speakers to help the students develop critical life skills.

Volunteers work with McClean Fletcher Center professionals to provide grief support, meals, and a sense of community to children who have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives.

Volunteers host a week-long summer camp for children ages 6-12 at the Salvation Army Community Complex with activities centered around nutrition and physical activity.

Coinciding with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in January, the League’s annual Day of Service consists of a series of half-day projects across the city of Jackson. These impactful projects strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and inspire shared solutions.

WHAT DOES THIS YEAR’S THEME OF “ALL IS BRIGHT” MEAN TO YOU?

All is Bright sums up the holiday season to me! When I think about the holidays, I think about the bright decorations, bright spirits, and bright holiday festivities. There is just a brightness in the air around the holiday season and with Mistletoe kicking off the season, I couldn’t think of a more fitting theme!

MEET THE MISTLETOE CHAIR DOUGLAS LOFTIN

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I grew up here in Jackson, where I went to First Pres Day School for elementary school and Jackson Prep for high school. I went to Ole Miss for college, then to UMMC School of Nursing for Nursing School. I worked as an RN for almost two years before making a career path change. I began working as a Policy Advisor for Philip Gunn, Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, in 2014. I worked for Speaker Gunn for the last nine years and in January of 2024, I began a new job as the Deputy Clerk of the Mississippi House of Representatives. I also own my own business, M. Douglas Collections, a custom paper goods company, where I design and print a wide range of custom paper goods, from stationery and invitations to cups and napkins and everything in between! I have always wanted to start my own business and finally did it a few years ago. It has been such a fun creative outlet for me!

I am married to Christopher Loftin. We met in the summer of 2011. When I moved back to Jackson to start nursing school in May of 2011, I was living with some friends from college. One of those friends was dating Christopher’s roommate at the time, so we met through them. A few other mutual friends had mentioned us to each other, as well. We didn’t start dating until two years later in the summer of 2013, though. As it turns out, one of my very best friends from college is from his hometown (Aberdeen, MS) and her older sister and Christopher’s older sister are childhood best friends! Only in Mississippi, right?! Having known Christopher her whole life, when I told her I had started dating him, she said “Oh my gosh you’re going to marry him!” She was right! We got married in 2015, and have two daughters, Mae (5) and Mollie (3).

Christopher is a Physical Therapist and Clinic Director. I enjoy spending time with my family. I love to travel, play tennis, waterski (and really any watersports!). We love going to the beach.

WHY DID YOU JOIN JLJ?

I joined JLJ because I wanted to be able to give back to the community that I was born and raised in while also meeting new friends. I knew that if I was going to stay in Jackson long term, I wanted to be a part of the community and do my part to help make this city the best place to live and raise our families. I also knew that I would make life-long friendships through JLJ. When women get together and rally around a common goal, lasting friendships are inevitably made, and I can attest to this after almost 10 years in JLJ!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT MISTLETOE MARKETPLACE?

Mistletoe kicks off the holiday season for me! There are so many things that I love about Mistletoe, but one of my favorites is the traditions that surround it. I love seeing the groups of shoppers, whether mother-daughter duos or just groups of friends, who come year after year for their Mistletoe tradition of shopping together. My mom and I have always come to Mistletoe Morning together and I look forward to that time with her every year!

I also love seeing the magic of the special events. Every single detail of all eight events is thoroughly planned and meticulously executed as if it were the main event. When I am asked which event I recommend, I can honestly say ALL OF THEM because every event is unique and special. All the events are a must-do in my book!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, I LOVE KNOWING WHAT THE FUNDS RAISED AT MISTLETOE DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY. IT GIVES MEANING TO ALL THE HARD WORK WE PUT INTO MISTLETOE!

HAVE YOU SERVED ON THE STEERING COMMITTEE BEFORE? WHAT WAS YOUR TITLE?

I served as the Mistletoe Marketplace 2019 Special Events Chair and the Mistletoe 2023 Steering Committee as Chair-Elect.

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU BECAME THE MISTLETOE CHAIR AND WHY.

My husband would say he’s known since the day I joined the League that I would Chair Mistletoe one day! Chairing Mistletoe was something I have always been interested in doing, but never knew if I would actually get the opportunity to do so! In 2019, I served on the Mistletoe Steering Committee as the Special Events Chair. I was pregnant with my first child when we started planning for Mistletoe 2019, which sometimes I look back on and can’t even believe! It was such a fun and rewarding experience and I remember thinking that this couldn’t be my last time to be on Mistletoe Steering Committee! It is such a privilege to be able to serve the Junior League and our community in this role and I am so honored to be able to do so! I am so thankful for my amazing co-chair, Carter Hood, and my steering committee. Carter has been the absolute best partner for this Mistletoe journey and our committee truly has gone above and beyond on every single aspect. I could not have done any of it without them!

WHEN DOES PLANNING BEGIN FOR MISTLETOE 2024, AND HOW MANY HOURS WILL YOU HAVE PUT IN BY THE TIME IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE?

Does “planning for Mistletoe 2024 began when I joined JLJ in 2015” count?! I’m only kidding but planning truly does start years before. It may not have been actual pen-to-paper planning until I became Chair-Elect in January of 2023, but I’ve been mentally planning for years. Serving in the many various Mistletoe roles

that I have throughout my time in JLJ has helped shape Mistletoe 2024. Every single Mistletoe shift I have ever worked has taught me something different about Mistletoe, about the League, and about myself, all of which play a huge role in the way we are planning for this year! Planning really commenced in February of 2023, though! I do not even know how to quantify the number of hours I will have put into it once it’s all said and done, but I’ll just say this - it has been a fulltime job but in the most fun and rewarding kind of way! Knowing what the funds we raise through Mistletoe go to support is the best motivation to make Mistletoe amazing. I am so honored and thankful to be a small part of this!

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MISTLETOE MARKETPLACE MEMORIES?

For as long as I can remember, my mom and I have always gone together to the Mistletoe Morning event. We love getting there early to shop and it has become such a fun holiday tradition for us! I also have such fun memories of running around the Trade Mart as a child while my mom was there setting up and getting ready for Mistletoe in the 90s. That is probably where my love of Mistletoe truly began. I loved watching my mom and all her best friends transform the old Trade Mart into the magic that is Mistletoe! I even have several of the gold star ornaments that were used throughout Mom’s Mistletoe decorations in ‘96. Hanging these on my Christmas tree every year brings back such fun Mistletoe memories with her! I also love bringing my two daughters to the Children’s Event every year now. They absolutely love it and look forward to it every year, it is so fun to get to share that with them now and start our own Mistletoe traditions!

WHAT DO THE FUNDS RAISED BY MISTLETOE MARKETPLACE GO TOWARDS?

The funds raised by Mistletoe Marketplace support the 30+ community projects and initiatives that the Junior League of Jackson hosts for children and youth in our community, which focus on essential needs, academic growth, and healthy living and mental well-being. Knowing all of the good that will be done in our city with the money raised at Mistletoe gives meaning and purpose to all of the hard work and long hours we put into planning Mistletoe.

ANY INSIDER TIPS FOR MISTLETOE SHOPPERS?

I like to start at the far end of the Trade Mart, the end opposite of the entrance, and make a quick lap of the Trade Mart when I first get there to survey the booths and scout out what I’m interested in. Then, I work my way back slowly and really shop! I also highly recommend the morning brunches on Thursday and Friday! They are my favorite because of the smaller crowd and have the bonus of an amazing breakfast spread provided by Mangia Bene Catering! It is hard to beat!

MEET THE MISTLETOE CO-CHAIR CARTER HOOD

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

As a native-Kentuckian, I can honestly say I never thought Mississippi would be my home, but I’m very glad that it is! I grew up in a small town in Kentucky and went on to attend Ole Miss, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing Communications. After graduating, I moved to Atlanta to attend a portfolio school for Graphic Design. It was there that I met my husband, who is a Jacksonian through and through. When he told me, he would live in Jackson forever, I thought it was funny but here we are now raising 3 boys and a dog in the Capitol City! There really is something special about Mississippi and I consider it a privilege to live here and give back to our community through the Junior League of Jackson.

I still dabble a little in design but I am now a Functional Medicine Health Coach. Health and wellness have always been a passion of mine, and it is a joy to help others find balance in their life.

WHY DID YOU JOIN JLJ?

I joined JLJ because my mother-in-law spoke so highly of her years in the league, sharing stories about the lifelong friends she made and the meaningful projects she worked on, including Mistletoe Marketplace!

I am not from Mississippi and I thought that joining the league would be a great way for me to be involved in giving back to the community and a way to meet new friends.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT MISTLETOE MARKETPLACE?

Oh gosh, where to start! There are so many things I love about Mistletoe, first and foremost I love that all the money we raise during MM goes directly back to JLJ to fund all of our many projects throughout the year. I also love that Mistletoe kicks off the holiday season and is a tradition for so many women to come and shop with daughters, mothers, and friends. Additionally, I love the genuine friendships I have made with other women in the league while volunteering at Mistletoe.

HAVE YOU SERVED ON THE STEERING COMMITTEE BEFORE? WHAT WAS YOUR TITLE?

I have not been on the Steering Committee before, but I have been fortunate to serve in a full placement with Mistletoe for five consecutive years. My positions have been Promotional Products Distribution Chair, Corporate Sponsor Lounge Chair, Art and Design Chair, Merchant Co-Chair, and Promotions Co-Chair.

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU BECAME THE MISTLETOE COCHAIR AND WHY.

Mistletoe has always been one of my favorite events, from attending before I even joined the league to volunteering there over the years. Douglas and I enjoyed volunteering together and I told her a long time ago that if she ever chaired Mistletoe, I would love to support her in any way I could, so here I am! WHEN DOES PLANNING BEGIN FOR MISTLETOE 2024 AND HOW MANY HOURS WILL YOU HAVE PUT IN BY THE TIME ITS ALL SAID AND DONE?

At this point, Douglas and I are talking about Mistletoe all day, every day! We started planning as soon as I was named Co-Chair in March of 2023. It really is hard to say how many hours we will have put in, easily more than 20-30 hours per week.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MISTLETOE MARKETPLACE MEMORIES?

One of my favorite memories from Mistletoe is serving on the Decorations team. Decorations for Mistletoe is a huge undertaking, but it was really neat to be a part of bringing all the decorations magic to life. It was most certainly a lot of work, but it was really cool to step back with the team after it was all done and say, “Wow, we did that.” Many of the co-chairs and members of the Decorations team from that year are still great friends of mine, largely because of the time and energy we invested in the event together.

WHAT DOES THIS YEAR’S THEME OF “ALL IS BRIGHT” MEAN TO YOU?

WHEN WE WERE THINKING OF THEMES FOR MM24, WE KEPT COMING BACK TO THE IDEA OF CHRISTMAS AND THE HOPE THAT THE HOLIDAY SEASON BRINGS. THE DEFINITION OF ”BRIGHT”, IS “GIVING OUT OR REFLECTING A LOT OF LIGHT,” AND I THINK THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF JACKSON DOES JUST THAT THROUGH THE WAY WE GIVE BACK AND SERVE OUR COMMUNITY.

WHAT DO THE FUNDS RAISED BY MISTLETOE MARKETPLACE GO TOWARDS?

All of the funds we raise at Mistletoe Marketplace go towards all of the community projects the Junior League does throughout the year.

ANY INSIDER TIPS FOR MISTLETOE SHOPPERS?

Shop early! My favorite events are the brunches on Thursday and Friday mornings. You get to enjoy shopping with a smaller crowd, followed by breakfast, coffee, even a mimosa!

General Manager and Vice President Jeff Guy is a 30-year broadcast television industry veteran and Emmy Award Silver Circle inductee. Among his contributions to WJTV’s legacy as Mississippi’s first local news station, Jeff has spearheaded exclusive station partnerships with state, local, and sports entities such as the Mississippi Braves, State Fairgrounds, Visit Jackson, University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), and Jackson St. Paddy’s Day Parade. He strives to implement new station initiatives focused on strengthening and supporting positive community outcomes, such as Operation Tornado, a severe weather preparation and awareness program aimed at students and young children, as well as other Safety and Education programs like Cool Schools, which showcases teachers, students, and Mississippi school’s unique achievements. The Junior League of Jackson reserves the right to require a minimum purchase price as posted on select items.

The Junior League of Jackson reserves the right to add or remove items from the online auction at any time without notice.

Payment restrictions apply. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express are acceptable forms of payment.

All items that include lodging are on a spaceavailable basis unless otherwise noted.

All certificates, services, and items must be used in accordance with all specified restrictions set forth by the donor. Read all information carefully; some auction items expire within sixty (60) days or less. The Junior League of Jackson is not responsible for the failure of a winner to adhere to donor restrictions. RACHAEL MYRICK STEERING COMMITTEE LOUNGE

Rachael Myrick is the owner of Myrick Interior Design, a full-service design firm that specializes in residential, commercial, and healthcare design with an emphasis on luxury new construction projects. Rachael has always had a love for design, but knew she wanted to make a career of it after taking a trip to Europe in high school. Her love of architecture and creating spaces that could be enjoyed for generations led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in interior design from The University of Southern Mississippi. Upon graduation, Rachael moved to Houston, TX and worked with one of Houston’s Top 10 architecture firms before returning to her Mississippi roots to grow her career in the hospitality industry as a restaurant designer. After 11 years in her role as a restaurant designer, Rachael opened her own design firm which now boasts a studio/storefront space in Downtown Brandon’s Historic District. Her style can be described as classically relevant and incorporates a mix of traditional and transitional ideas.

When asked about designing this year’s Steering Committee lounge, Rachael says, “I am honored to be able to design the steering committee lounge for the second year in a row! My inspiration comes from the color palette used in this year’s Mistletoe Marketplace theme. This makes my job easy because blue is my favorite color to work with! The look that will be created for the lounge design will feature shades of blues, gold accents, ample seating, and fun artwork. My hope is to create a comfortable and stylish retreat for the committee members using the lounge.”

In addition to various construction, emergency response, military, and specialty vehicles for the children to explore, Touch A Truck® Jackson offers hands-on opportunities to read, learn, and play. Touch A Truck® Jackson 2025 begins on Friday, March 28, 2025, with Dump Trucks and Donuts, a signature preschool event. This is followed by Field Trip Friday, where we will welcome second-grade students to a preview event experience. Thanks to our amazing Handy Helpers, invited students are able to attend this event at no cost to them. On Saturday, March 29, 2025, the VIP Big Wheel Breakfast will include breakfast and early access to the event, followed by general admission, which is open to the public.

PROVISIONALS

The Junior League of Jackson is pleased to welcome 158 new members to the 2024-2025 Provisional class. The Provisional Steering Committee has organized an excellent year of training aimed at deepening our new members’ understanding of the League’s rich history, mission, organizational structure, and community impact. This year will culminate in a community project where our new members will partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Mississippi to host the 3rd annual “Where Hope Grows” farmers market. This event not only provides essential food resources to those in need but also includes educational activities and a day of community fellowship. This intensive year of training and service will equip our Provisionals with the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to thrive as effective community volunteers.

Pre-K through 6th is a vital and vibrant window to inform a child’s worldview, instill confidence and secure the cornerstone of faith. Everything at FPDS is built around these crucial ages, from our classrooms to our academic philosophy: Learn. Grow. Go.

Our students learn to be “learners.” We engage them with thoughtful teaching styles and technology so they can grow into their full potential. By 6th-grade graduation, they have built a foundation grounded in faith so they can go on to do great things. Grow with us at fpds.org

SUSTAINERS

Junior League of Jackson Sustainers are members who have fulfilled the requirements for Active membership for at least seven years and who have chosen to continue supporting the League as Sustaining members. Comprising the largest membership group within the League, Sustainers contribute a prestigious history and a wealth of wisdom to current Active members and League operations. They actively engage in community service projects, financial commitments, and advisory roles.

While Sustainers are no longer required to participate in community projects, they continue to lead some of the League’s most enduring and successful initiatives, such as Feed-A-Family, Joyful Noise, Rockin’ and Readin’ Mamas, and the Eudora Welty House and Garden. In addition, Sustainers participate in book clubs, cooking clubs, and various social events throughout the year. A notable annual event is the Junior League of Jackson “Golden Girls Soiree,” which celebrates and honors those with at least 25 years of Sustainer membership and service. The Sustainer Steering Committee coordinates group activities and service project opportunities for Sustainers.
