Nowadays, it takes an extra turn to reach these historic little towns. That’s because the river has meandered to the other side of the flood plain. And the new highway follows the ridge at the top of the hill, a mile or so from historic downtown New Haven.

That just makes these tiny downtowns cozier, as you wave to

Amtrak passengers who whiz by four times a day.
