athletics Racquet Sports: In Full Swing

TRY A NEW WAY TO SQUASH Introducing a new English racquet sport to try out at the courts — Squash 57, named that due to the diameter of the ball. This is a growing game in the UK. Players use a bigger, racket and a bigger, bouncier ball. The extra bounce means there’s more time to get to the ball, so expect a lot of fun as you get engrossed in a long rally. Squash 57 is a nice halfway house between squash and US racquetball. SQUASH SKILLS CHALLENGE Who has the skills to pay the bills? The MAC Squash juniors were set some racquet skills and fitness challenges. Racquet skills challenges included figure eights, target hitting and court sprints, which were all timed for a minute. The juniors all improved over the few weeks. Henry Byrne and Eli Paul were neck-and-neck in the competition, but Byrne topped the leader board by a few extra targets and running a quick 20 court sprints in 49.19 seconds (with sunburnt feet) to Paul’s 49.25 seconds (speculation on accuracy of the stopwatch). When the MAC returns to squash, a good alternative to gameplay, keeping distance, and honing in on your skills is solo practice. Solo is a great way of enhancing your racquet skills and can be combined with “ghosting,” which is where players practice movement patterns simulating a rally. There are solo drills written up by the courts, and Squash Director, Alex Ingham, would be happy to demonstrate and help you get started. Reach him by email at aingham@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4484.
