Dear 4-H Friends, The Missouri 4-H Foundation recently said goodbye to longtime Foundation trustee Irvin Whittler, affectionately known as Butch. To know Butch was to love him, and he knew many and was loved by many. He had battled cancer over the past few years, and yet his death still took us all by surprise. He was in our office just a few weeks prior and still exuded the tremendous spirit he always had. His love of life and his love of 4-H were evident, and no one was a greater advocate for Missouri's young people than Butch. Our thoughts and prayers are with Butch's wife Kay, his daughter Candias, his grandchildren, and the many friends he considered family, who will always miss him. It was a great pleasure to honor Monsanto Co. at the Missouri 4-H Foundation Scholarship and Awards Banquet in September. Monsanto is the recipient of the 2015 Nelson Trickey 4-H Bridge Builder Award, which is presented to individuals and organizations for exceptional service bridging youth and community. Monsanto has been a Missouri 4-H Foundation partner for more than 30 years, and the company's support of 4-H is stronger than ever. Monsanto's investment in numerous 4-H programs has sustained and enhanced opportunities for thousands of young people over the decades. Additionally, Monsanto's employees have been among our most loyal volunteers in the field and in the board room, and we are grateful for their continued partnership in so many capacities. Earlier this spring and over the summer, the Foundation honored numerous volunteers through the Naomi Crouch and Frank Graham 4-H Volunteer Leadership Awards, and the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame. Nothing brings us greater pleasure than to be able to say thank you to those who have so generously dedicated themselves to service on behalf of 4-H. Thanks to many of you, the Sixth Annual Missouri 4-H Clover Classic Golf Tournament, held June 2 in Columbia, was once again a great success. The co-sponsors for this year's event were Monsanto Co. and The Climate Corp., and Great American Insurance-Crop Division. A huge thank you to our tournament co-chairs Bob Idel of FCS Financial and John Raines of Monsanto Co. and The Climate Corp. In memorium Irvin "Butch" Whittler

rvin Francis Brown, Jr. Whittler passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015 at the age of 62. Irvin, affectionately known as Butch, was born in Philadelphia, Pa. to Irvin Francis Brown, Sr. and Elizabeth Mae Bass. He was a graduate of Hickman High School, a member of the S. S. Warren 4-H Club in Boone County, Mo., and he became the first black State 4-H Council president. Butch met his wife, Kay, while attending Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., where he received his bachelor and master degrees. He began his teaching career in the Boston, Mass. School District. In 1987, he returned to Columbia, Mo., where he taught at West Junior High School for 18 years. Upon retirement, he began working as the Northeast Region
Field Service Coordinator for the Missouri State Teachers' Association. Butch dedicated most of his life to advocating for Missouri's teachers and the children they serve. He was a devoted volunteer and embodied every quality the 4-H clover represents. In addition to serving on the Missouri 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees for 11 years, he served on the executive boards of several nonprofit organizations and was an elder and minister at The Latter House Kingdom Ministries. He also worked as a funeral director for H. T. May and Son Funeral Homes. We will always remember Butch for his kind smile and welcoming demeanor. He was an incredible friend and advocate for Missouri 4-H and cared deeply about the young people of Missouri. Survivors include his wife, Kay; his daughter Candias (Marcel) Hardin; three grandsons Maurice, Tre and Bryce Banks of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters, Barbara (David) Horrell of Columbia, Mo. and Robin (Homer) Butler of Des Moines, Ia.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.

Missouri 4-H shooters are national champs Stewart McCollum, Sydney Orton, Anthony McCollum, and Allyson Parks swept their discipline, ranking first, second, third and fourth, respectively. Tad Terrell brought home a first-place finish overall in recurve archery. Shooting sports is among the largest projects in the University of Missouri Extension's 4-H program, Snapp said. It is one of the fastestgrowing programs nationally and is one of the largest shooting education programs in the United States. Generous support for the Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports national team was provided by the National Rifle Association Foundation, Brenda and Larry Potterfield, the Big Game Hunters Foundation of St. Louis, Starline Brass, Sierra Bullets, Prairie Grove Shotgun Club, Powder Horn Guns & Sporting Goods, the Missouri 4-H Foundation, and the Missouri Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Competition participants included 4-H youths from the following counties: Boone, Cass, Clinton, Cole, Gasconade, Greene, Grundy, Harrison, Jasper, Lafayette, Linn, Macon, Marion, Polk, Pulaski, Saline, St. Charles, Texas and Warren. 3

aking the best better” for generations of Missouri 4-H Club members, 46 luminaries joined the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame on Aug. 15 at the State Fair Community College campus in Sedalia. Inductees from 36 counties established a total of 1,434 years of volunteer service to Missouri 4-H. More than 300 family members and friends attended the ninth annual event. Inductees were nominated by their counties for outstanding volunteer work in local 4-H programs. “Today we honor the dedicated people who've helped shape 4-H history by nurturing Missouri youths,” said State 4-H Council President Laura Bardot.

onsanto Co. was honored with the Missouri 4-H Foundation Nelson Trickey 4-H Bridge Builder Award Sept. 11 in Columbia. Monsanto Co. has been a dedicated Missouri 4-H partner for more than 30 years. "At Monsanto, we recognize that making a balanced meal accessible to everyone, and doing it in a sustainable way, requires a wide range of resources," said Mark Goth, channel brand analyst for Monsanto and Missouri 4-H Foundation trustee. "That's why we're dedicated to supporting the next generation of ag leaders and have proudly partnered with the Missouri 4-H Foundation for over 30 years." Since the early 1980s Monsanto has supported Missouri 4-H programs that focus on developing important leadership and life skills, while engaging in citizenship and service-learning activities. Their support for Missouri 4-H includes the Youth Civic Leaders Summit, Mizzou 4-H, the State 4-H Council, the State 4-H Dairy Judging program and the Missouri Citizens in Action workshop. At the national level, Monsanto's support for 4-H has taken many forms over the years, including funding for 4-H Volunteer Training Forums and Salute to Excellence awards, and promotion of 4-H volunteer recruitment initiatives. Since 2010, more than $2.3 million has been directed to individual 4-H clubs across the country through America's Farmers Grow Communities, which provides farmers with an opportunity to support a nonprofit organization in their local community. Through this program, Missouri farmers have directed $137,500 to Missouri 4-H clubs. "Monsanto's commitment to improving the lives of young people, farming families and their communities is evident in the work that they do," said Cheryl Reams, Missouri 4-H Foundation executive director. "We are very grateful for the generous support Monsanto provides to Missouri 4-H youths."
