All-conference midfielder Alex Helgeson and fellow midfielder Jonah Kasnitz, both junior cocaptains, will lead the Pirates, who finished 2-8-0 a season ago. Little is expected to change in the Southern A, where defending conference champion Frenchtown seems poised to defend its crown. The Broncs went 8-3-2 last year, but lost in the semifinal round to eventual State A champion Whitefish. Frenchtown takes experience to another level with 12 returning players, 11 of whom started in 2012. However, seventh-year Broncs head coach Kirk Gammill says his team lacks any “super subs.” “I’ve got a great corps of kids who are super, super solid, but there’s not a lot of depth on my team,” he said. “It falls off a little bit after the first 11, so I’m a little worried about that. “I feel pretty confident about where we’re at right now. I’m just super excited to get out on the pitch again.” Gammill says his team will be led by two seniors: Tristan Baker, an all-state midfielder who scored 10 goals to go with 12 assists, and Andrew Honken, an allconference defender, look to lead Frenchtown back to contention. “Obviously a conference title is our main goal,” Gammill said. “After losing to Whitefish in the semifinals, of course we’d like to get back and make a run. “I know, for the seniors, it’s been on their minds since last year’s defeat.” Gammill sees his biggest competition coming from Stevensville, which returns nine starters from last year’s 7-5-1 squad. Yellowjackets head coach Ralph Serrette says his team has speed and skills, but lacks the size of his Southern A counterparts. Another team expected to push for the conference title is Corvallis, which features eight returning starters from its 7-4-2 team.

The Blue Devils are led by senior forward Cameron Ayers, who found the net 19 times in 2012. While Hamilton finished 6-51 a year ago, Loyola Sacred Heart will look to dig out of the Southern A depths in 2013. The Rams went 0-12-0 in 2012.

one-goal loss to Great Falls Russell and a shootout defeat against the rival Spartans. Despite finishing sixth out of seven Western AA teams, Sentinel caught fire in the second season. It knocked out Kalispell Glacier in a play-in game and was the only Missoula team to win a game at state. In fact, two shootout victories in a row following an opening-round loss earned Sentinel a fifthplace finish. The Spartans are back with five starters and a massive group of underclassmen that could prove affective right away. All-stater Adam Mickelson, a junior midfielder now, leads the former group while Griffin Lane, a 6foot-2 freshman in the midfield, is the highlight of the latter. Much like Hellgate, Big Sky will be trying to push from its collective mind a dip in the state tournament from a year ago. The Eagles were 5-3-4 in the regular

season but checked out after two state losses. They’ll be trying to better that finish without two all-staters from last year – keeper Nathan Mahler and defender Blue Hayler – who graduated. Helena’s two schools will be trying to turn the Year of Garden City into one of Capital City, though. Helena High was last year’s state runner-up to Bozeman and Capital is much improved over the team that finished 4-6-3. The Bruins will have size and experience on their side this time, Anderson said. Kalispell Glacier and Kalispell Flathead, two teams that along with Capital missed the postseason in 2012, will have a tough time climbing over the pile of talent ahead of them to earn a state berth this time around.

GIRLS There’s much dispute among Missoula and Kalispell girls’ soccer coaches as to which team from the five-some will fare best on the pitch this fall. But one thing is for certain: They’ll all be chasing those darned Helena programs. Helena High – last year’s unbeaten conference champion – and its crosstown cohort Helena Capital appeared on top or near the top of each coaches’ preseason predictions. “Capital has such a strong program that they are always tough to beat,” Missoula Hellgate coach Caroline Lurgio said. “Helena had a great year last year so they may work off of that momentum.” It won’t hurt that the Bengals also have all-stater and leading scorer from a

She was selected as the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Montana female soccer player of the year after leading the conference in scoring with 32 points (nine goals, five assists). After going 7-0-5 in conference, Helena finished fourth in the state tournament, the best finish of any Western AA squad ahead of Kalispell Glacier’s fifth. Missoula Sentinel, 94-2 overall a year ago, underachieved in the state tournament after a secondplace conference finish. It may be hard for the Spartans to get back to that with the roster turnover they’ve experience this fall. There are only four starters back, sixth-year head coach Keri Grasky said. That includes one at every point of the field – a forward, midfielder, defender and goal keeper. Keeper Jess Henning’s presence will be important playing behind such a young team, the coach said. “Her experience, leadership role as a captain and ability to keep our

defense calm will be crucial this year,” Grasky said, much the way forward Lexi Steele will hold up the other end of the field. Despite a 0-10-3 campaign in 2012, Grasky said she expects her biggest city challenger to be Hellgate. The rest of the league might not agree, but the Sentinel coach was adamant that the Knights can challenge this year. “They’ve been working toward it for so long,” Grasky said. “I hate saying they deserve it because I’d hate to see it happen against me, but I definitely think they could be contenders.” The offense was what lacked for Hellgate in their winless 2012 – just five goals scored in the 13 games. That should only improve this time around with eight returning starters a year more experienced. Among that group is senior Haley Glassy, who missed her first two prep soccer seasons with torn ACLs and was voted Coaches Player of the Year in Western AA after playing every minute of 2012. Big Sky will also be trying to work its way up from the bottom. The

Eagles were second to last ahead of Hellgate at 1-10-2. They tied and beat the Knights and also held Capital to a scoreless draw. Big Sky is young again this time around, but has lots of experience playing together after many of the girls won the under-17 silver division at the USA Cup in Minnesota this summer. Returning allconference player Kayla McCampbell can play anywhere on the field and is Big Sky’s player to watch. Glacier returns six starters from its playoff team a year ago but will rely heavily on newcomers. Sophomores like keeper Amy Braig and strikers Carly McDonald and Alysha Smith will determine much of the team’s success. Flathead missed out on state last year when the Wolfpack pushed it out in the play-in round and will be under new head coach Cory Wilson, an assistant on last year’s team, for 2013.
