We are pleased to welcome you to our 11th annual Missoula Businesswomen’s Network Women’s Symposium, “Together We Can”. The Symposium will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The MBN Women’s Symposium is recognized as a phenomenal event throughout western Montana and averages more than 350 attendees each year. The MBN Women’s Symposium is a non-for-profit, one-day women’s conference held in Missoula. Since our first Symposium, it has been the goal of the annual MBN Women’s Symposium to educate, network, and promote local businesses, as well as provide attendees with personal and professional growth opportunities. We are excited to bring keynote speaker Judy Hoberman to this years MBN Women’s Symposium. In addition to the keynote luncheon, the MBN Women’s Symposium offers four breakout sessions with presenters from across Montana. Each session allow attendees opportunities to hear presentations on topics from professional to personal growth. The presenters and his/her topics are listed for review throughout the publication. The MBN Women’s Symposium offers wonderful opportunities to network with other attendees and learn about other local businesses. There are nearly 50 vendors to mingle with, and we encourage all attendees to have business cards on hand to exchange with vendors and other attendees. This presentation will go over the IRS rules and regulations concerning the differences between the two and what employers need to know prior to hiring the individual. 5 Ways to Authentic Leadership Authentic leadership is moving past the paralysis of perfection; keep moving forward with intentional belief success is yours. When I coach executives and teams on projects, 99% of the time what is holding them back to gleaning extraordinary success is the mindset of perfection. I call this the paralysis of perfection; you remain the same and glean the same results because you are unable to move forward. Waiting for perfection often leaves you at the starting gate in the paralysis of EVERYTHING and EVERYONE must be perfect before you start. My advice to you, start even if it is ugly! What is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and why would an ordinary person need one? Many people believe that only self-employed business owners or wealthy people need to understand corporations and LLCs. Over 21 years as an attorney, I have seen increasing numbers of “ordinary people” and non-business owners who would benefit by having a Limited Liability Company (LLC). An LLC would save them legal fees and make their lives simpler. An LLC is a legal “person” or “entity” the way a corporation is. An LLC generally requires less paperwork (simplicity) and has greater flexibility than a corporation. An LLC has many advantages: 1) limiting personal liability and protecting assets in case of a lawsuit 2) ease of day to day management, 3) a simple way to pass property to future generations, and 4) overall less legal fees, particularly at death. Imagine an LLC as a cardboard box that is treated as its on legal person. The box has a name: “Sam’s Real Estate, LLC”. If it is a single member LLC, then Sam might be the only owner of the LLC box. If there are 5 owners, then Sam and his 4 siblings might own the LLC. The real estate is owned by the legal “person” Sam’s Real Estate, LLC, not by the 5 individuals. This may sound like a technicality but that technicality is where all the benefits come in. Below are a few detailed examples of how this legal reality (technicality) can be used to provide tangible benefits to you! Consider using an LLC if any of the following apply to you: 1.

Family Cabin or Lake Home. Where siblings inherit a lake home or cabin, using an LLC to own the real estate makes day to day management easier. One sibling can pay the bills while having legal accountability to the others. The LLC protects all the owners from a lawsuit, for example, if a friend had an accident or injury while visiting the property. The family real estate is also protected from being lost if any owner (the siblings or their children after they die) got divorced, sued or declared bankruptcy. Rental Real Estate. Many people now own real estate and rent it. If a tenant were to sue you, the LLC protects all of your other assets (bank accounts, your home, and all other wealth) from being tied up in the lawsuit. If you want one or more children to own the real estate after you die, it is also easier to pass the real estate to the children if it is held in an LLC.

Avoiding Probate Court Proceedings in other states. At death, probate is the paperwork process to be sure your family receives clear title to all of your assets. In Montana, the process is simple and can be done by mail. However, if you own real estate in another state (such as a winter home in California), your family will need to work with a California attorney at death to transfer the CA real estate. If you have an LLC that owns the real estate, then you avoid probate court proceedings in CA. It sounds like a technicality but at death you own legally do not own CA real estate, you own “stock” or an “interest” in an LLC and the LLC owns the real estate. That avoids CA probate and reduces your legal fees.

Mineral Rights. Imagine that you have inherited mineral rights in 4 states. See item 3 above and you will realize that you are now paying attorneys in those 3 states. Then, when you die, your children pay attorneys in 3 states again. If all mineral rights were owned in an LLC, that LLC can pass from generation to generation without paying probate attorneys in any of those states. The costs saving can be substantial!

Any small business. Any business that otherwise would be a “sole proprietor” should consider using an LLC. It protects your personal assets from any business liability and makes the business easier to transfer.

Magic Happens When You Start with Gratitude Gratitude is a powerful tool for life, in general, and also when building your business. What exactly is Gratitude? According to my thesaurus, Gratitude is described by words like: Thankfulness, Appreciation, Gratefulness, Recognition and Acknowledgement Why spend our precious time and energy on something that seems outdated or even silly in the hardcore world of business? Well, there is a magic that begins in life and business. When we take time to think about what we have to be thankful for it changes something inside us that brings the “good” back into our lives. Many call it the “Law of Attraction”. You become what you think about. As many of us do, we think on the negative side of our lives: not enough time, not enough money, no one really cares, etc. Turning that negative tape in our heads off can be difficult but so rewarding if we just choose to do it. Choosing thoughts of gratitude makes us: •

Opens pathways in our head and heart

Allows the “Good” to flow into our lives and business

After all our businesses are just extensions of our lives. Right?

When we share our thoughts of gratitude with the people that need to hear it, more magic happens. In the book “365 Thank Yous”, the author John Kralik describes the life altering change that occurred for him. He was a lawyer that started with an idealistic approach to help others and got caught up as we do in life’s miseries. He was divorced, on the brink of losing his practice and hoping for a heart attack or to be hit in the street by a speeding car. During a particular low moment, New Year’s Day while lost on a hike in the woods, he chose to take the next 365 days and write a thank you note to someone every day. His life and business started to turn around. He rekindled relationships that were important and clients started paying their bills. As Jeffrey Zaslow, coauthor of The Last Lecture, states John’s book is “Profoundly honest and uplifting, John Kralick’s story reminds us of all those in our own lives who deserve our thanks. Though his journey was remarkably personal, it has the power to be a call to action for all of us”. Gratitude, if given honestly can be a powerful marketing tool also. It is soft marketing with a powerful punch. One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Her quote reminds us that all humans have the basic need to feel important. If you make them feel that they genuinely are important to you, you have a good friend or customer for life. What does a good friend or customer bring to you? … Referrals! Does Age Matter? Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and impacts the lives of millions of Americans and is a tremendous burden on our health care system. What if there were things that we could each do to avoid or delay the onset of this disease? Well the latest research indicates there are many things that one can do, starting 20 years prior to when this disease would typically present. Age is a factor in the risk of getting Alzheimer’s and the percentage of people suffering from the disease doubles every 5 years after age 65. People with parents or siblings who have the disease are at a higher risk and the hereditary factor is higher in earlyonset (before age 65) Alzheimer’s. So what can one do to change the expression of genes, avoid the disease or delay the onset? Researchers are finding that there are many things that impact this disease. One of the simplest interventions is food. Researchers from Chicago Rush University Medical Center have found that people who followed a MIND diet that they developed are less likely to become afflicted. The diet is much like the Mediterranean diet and the anti-hypertension diet DASH. Both encourage people to consume greens, berries, whole grains, nuts, fish, poultry, olive oil and wine. Obesity can lead to accelerated cognitive decline and dementia. Obese people have central obesity with increased blood sugar and triglycerides in the blood, increased blood pressure and low levels of good HDL. The fat cells that make up central obesity are very inflammatory and increase inflammation in the brain. Brain inflammation is associated with reduced brain volume and a greater risk of cognitive decline. Lifestyle intervention including diet is mandatory to lose weight and lower one’s risk of cognitive decline. Inflammation is one of the leading causes of chronic diseases. A recent study on extreme longevity concluded that having very low levels of inflammation in your body is the most potent predictor of living beyond 100 years of age. Chronic inflammation can go on for years without you noticing until disease suddenly sets in. A simple lab test, C-Reactive Protein (CRP) , can measure inflammation in your body. Or a fasting insulin level can be looked at for a marker of inflammation. If you are inflamed, diet and exercise

are the primary ways to combat inflammation. The Western Style diet is full of processed refined, high fat and glucose foods. To effect change in how we age, we must change our diet. Eat real food! One does not need a PhD in nutrition to get it right. Shop the perimeter of the store. Avoid processed vegetable oils and sugars. Use high quality unprocessed fats such as olive oil and coconut oil. Exercise research confirms that a life style that includes exercise also helps avoid or delay cognitive decline. Focused exercise should consist of intervals designed for ones level and high intensity resistance/ strength training of all major muscles groups 3 times per week. Motion should be incorporated into each day. Other suggestions to improve brain health and avoid cognitive decline are: socialization, brain games “neurobics”, yoga, meditation, rest and recovery. And on a final note, learn to laugh and play with friends and family. Age is not nearly as important as the life style we choose to live. Who likes to Laugh? Marketing with humor Flying frequently, I could probably give the safety message that is proclaimed loudly throughout the airplane prior to takeoff. As such, I usually ignore it all together and spend the last few minutes of connectivity returning one more email. This was the case as I boarded the Delta outbound flight recently at my home airport. After silently thanking the frequent-flyer mile program for the upgrade to comfort seats, I settled in and began returning emails. By the time I looked up, the safety video was half done. That is when I paused – “Was that a no goat sign?” I thought. “Can’t be – wa wait wait, it,, th it ther there ere er e iss a no water skiing sign. Since when did a water ate terr sk skii skiing iiiing ng ssign ign ig n replace the standard ‘no smoking in bathrooms’ room ro oms’ om s’ ssign?” ign? ig n?”” n? I then did something I hadn’t done in mo mont months nths nt hs ((if if n not ot lso ls o wa watc tche tc hed he d years) – I watched the rest of the video. I a also watched ghts gh ts o n all the safety videos on all the remaining fliights on e th than an o ne my trip. Three weeks later I was back on an airplane rpl plan ane an e outbound from my home airport, but this ti time me I was flying a different airline. brand (i.e., Mike’s Hard Lemonade campaign of 2002). The key to humor in advertising is to keep it “light and polite.” In the case of Mike’s campaign, the ads were geared to 21-29 year old males and used crude humor. Though amusing the first time viewed, their use of repetitive, gruesome imagery wore on viewers’ nerves and eventually became the most hated campaign of the year. Instead, follow Delta’s lead and create a positive experience with subtle humor. It can keep people tuning in time and time again. The important take home – “Humor can make ads more enjoyable….and memorable. Have a sales philosophy that emphasizes relationship building. What defines you as a business, and as a person, are the relationships you develop in your life. Make it your mission to build friendships, form strong bonds and ultimately, true loyalty. Value the relationship more than making the sale. Always look out for the best interest of your client. Not yourself. Define a unique niche and become an expert on it. Knowledge is power. So, make sure you can provide expert advice when needed. And, stand apart from others in your field by supplying a specialized service. Help the customer build their own business. Become a source of referrals for your client. If someone you know needs their services, tell them, and contact your customer to let them know. This makes your relationship a collaboration. Deliver what you have promised. When you say you are going to do it, do it. This builds trust. Think end-of-time friendships, not end-of-month totals. Let your daily mantra continually be, “The Customer comes first.” Provide absolutely impeccable service after the sale. Make it a priority to send out Thank you cards, birthday cards, and better yet, a newsletter. Always be available or return calls or emails immediately. And, always followup when you are servicing your client’s needs. Make them feel safe. Make them feel valued.
