What our Team learned
Our team was able to learn through article reads and research more about what the community is facing and needing. This includes a new housing project that is happening right here in Phoenix to help house people experiencing homelessness. We also learned more about the connection between mental health and homelessness.
Our mission team does its best to be continuous learners and constantly share new things that we have heard about or researched with each other to better understand what we can do to help.
Andre House
We were able to serve Andre House by helping to sort clothes that had been donated. By doing this, it allows Andre House to be able to more effectively and efficiently distribute this resource. While there we were able to see what types of clothes come in most often and what they may need more of. We are also able to gauge if they need more items other than clothes and what we can do to support.
Article Read
As a mission team we did an article read about a new housing program that ASU is testing out. This housing program matches people with roommates and provides affordable housing to those experiencing housing insecurity. This program will be a test run using veterans as the testing group. By doing this article read we were learning more about the current housing initiatives in the area. We also talked about both the pros and cons of this project in concern to both the people part of it and the surrounding communities.
Another thing we took away from this read is that there are many ways that people can help fund projects like this and small donations or grants can make a big difference as this whole project is grant funded.

Beck Blanton was the woman giving this ted talk about how she experienced homelessness when she wasn't expecting it. She was able to walk through not only her experience with homelessness, but how her mental health was connected. This Ted Talk showed the interconnectedness of the two issues and deepened the understanding for both mission teams.
Being able to hear firsthand accounts of experiences help to understand what people really need in these situations and what can be done to help. After we had a discussion about the key points of the article and brainstormed ideas of opportunities we can pursue in the future!

Article Read With MT 14
Coming up on April 3rd we are networking with MT 14 to read an article that talks about how people experiencing homelessness do not have much access to health care. Through this article read we will be able to learn more about what we can do and initiative that are already taking place to try and combat this issue.
This event will be a steppingstone to another part of homelessness we will be able to try and help in the future. It will also provide us with a deeper understanding of the current state of health care when relating to the homeless population.
