Mission Mayor and Council committed to supporting local business Mayor and Council have had no time to sit back and enjoy the sunshine this summer as they made local business a priority, undertaking one of their core objectives, to gain a stronger understanding of the local business environment and the associated opportunities and challenges they are facing. Through a series of business tours organized by the Economic Development Office and joined by members of the Economic Development Select Committee (an advisory body to council made up of local business owners and managers), the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures North Fraser, council have been hitting the streets for one-on-one time with a variety of businesses, to gain further insight on the diverse range of goods and services available within our community. With a focus on locally owned, independent manufacturers and small businesses, the tours saw the group out for half day sessions in July and
August meeting a cross section of over twenty companies including V.I.P Soap Products, GrabA-Java Roastery, Justin Bond & Sons, and Hill’n Dale Animal Hospital and Technaflora Plant Products. Those in attendance gained first-hand experience of production processes, labor force requirements, exports and sales; and delved into some of the day to day issues these organizations are currently facing. This makes it sound like all work, but sampling home grown wines and local roasted coffee have seen the team enjoying the warm hospitality of the companies as they tour the facilities. Councillor Alexis commented “It has been an incredible opportunity for council to see and experience what is going on in the business community. At the same time we are learning what more we can do, or what we can change to make Mission a great place to do business.” Companies were welcomed to discuss concerns and challenges they are facing, and where the municipality could be of assistance. Already
the municipality has risen to the challenge offering letters of support, exploring internet connectivity options and infrastructure

Within only a couple of days of the tour action plans were initiated to address some of our concerns and opportunities, it’s nice to see such a quick response” It has also created a buzz as the companies and District share the visits on their social media channels, highlighting the value of these companies to our local economy. Louise Tran, Marketing Communications Manager for InterWrap shared tweets and said “It was a pleasure having the City of Mission accompanied by Mayor Randy Hawes visit our InterWrap Mission location during the #InvestMission visits! The tour was a great opportunity for InterWrap to showcase what we do at our plant on a daily operational basis. We are honored to contribute to the growth and development of the Mission community; this is a great chance to bring

the people together with local businesses. As we are adding production lines to our InterWrap Mission location, we are excited to be connecting and supporting Mission City.” The tours are set to continue into September including a half a day walking tour through the downtown with the Downtown Business Association and a trip to the Mission Raceway. By the time the tours are complete a tangible representation of Mission’s business environment will have been reached, giving a stronger understanding of needs, requirements and opportunities for sustainability and improved relationships. Councillor Hinds added “It has been an eye opener to see the scope and variety of businesses in Mission, along with the positive outlook for growth.” So what else is on the horizon for the Economic Development Office and council? Well, the end of August also saw the continuation of another of council’s goals and objectives with the Future of Tourism in Mission.

The Mission City Farmers Market works to bring people and organizations together to forge a stronger community. And because of this work, they were recently chosen to receive the Community Builder Award of Excellence from the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. At the centre is the Heart of the Market, where you find story time, music, kids’ crafts, and other entertainment. “The Heart of the Market is also the place for community groups, businesses and non-profit agencies to connect and share their information with market-goers,” says market manager Donna Gibson. “All we expect in exchange is that they become members of the market and provide materials for the kids’ craft and activities area.”
The Mission City Farmers Market has been operating at the library parking lot in downtown Mission since 2007, but has been helping locals sell their wares since 1996. Next year sees the market celebrate its 20th anniversary. Over the years, the number of vendors and products has grown to include a wider and richer variety of quality fresh produce, prepared and preserved foods and locally produced non-food items. Total vendor sales totals have increased more than 30% over the past three years, according to Gibson. “The Market has seen roughly 7,800 patrons this year,” she says, “And while that’s not a large increase in attendance over last year, the numbers show us that those who do attend are finding more things to buy and are spending more

money.” “The market has been an incubator of sorts for small, local businesses,” Gibson explains. “Several of our vendors started by selling their goods at the market and have grown their respective businesses so much that they’ve had to establish themselves in either brick-and-mortar storefronts or behind-the-scenes production facilities.” The market runs Saturdays from 9:00 – 1:00 PM, now until Oct. 10, followed by three indoor markets at the Clarke Theatre (Oct. 31, Nov. 28 and Feb. 6) and winding up with the popular indoor Seedy Saturday. The Future of Mission
As an element of their strategic focus in 2014, the Economic Development Select Committee (EDC) commissioned a graphic and digital design firm to produce 3D digital images of both the waterfront and downtown Mission. The intent was to develop a future vision of these two areas that would help create a stronger sense of direction and purpose while also conveying to the community and investors the redevelopment potential. This work was just recently completed. The imagery is compelling as it demonstrates the redevelopment potential of these priority areas of interest in our community. Because it is a digital framework, all design elements (building facades, sidewalks, and people)
can be easily changed to accommodate community input, which will be important as we update our Official Community Plan in 2015. These recently completed images are based on the Downtown Action Plan and Incentive Package and, for the waterfront, the

to be realistically achievable and not just a creative vision. This is a very interesting and exciting time for Mission. The landscape is literally changing and current investment interest associated with commercial, industrial, recreational and residential investment in our community is growing.
A significant reason for this activity is that Mission is forecast to double in population and jobs over the next 30 years. The growth that is visibly moving west to east is obvious and keeping pace with this is the need for places to live, work and play. While this presents obvious challenges, it also presents significant opportunity. In total, six development areas will undergo this imaging exercise. In addition to downtown and the waterfront already completed, specific commercial, industrial, residential and recreational lands will receive the same treatment and will be used as a complete package for future marketing and communications exercises associated with sharing our vision for the community.
