In April 1987 John Peter Makenzi came in to replace Sing’oei. Makenzi was coming from Tala High School in Machakos where he had taught and also headed. Makenzi made sweeping changes in the school including changing the uniforms to maroon blazers and striped maroon and white tie. The trousers remained grey. He also expanded the school by commencing the iconic KHS main building and classrooms and held numerous fundraisers to see it completed. Makenzi came in at the time when the first of the 8-4-4 were now in form two. He also transitioned the last of the A-levels, a program that lasted just a little over two decades. Makenzi was a strict disciplinarian and a stickler for standards. Having done his teaching practice at Alliance, he often tried to replicate the model in Kapsabet. In his time Kapsabet students excelled in many ways – sending record numbers to the public Universities. Makenzi left in January 1994 and in his place came R. Kirui on a temporary basis and was in turn replaced by Mr. A. L. Lifulu in February 1994. Lifulu served until May 1994 when E.K. Lagat came in. Lagat served until September 2000 when he was replaced by J. Otieno who served a year and a half when Lagat returned doing another five years from November 2001 and January 2006 when Mr. Tirop took over. In July 2010 the current Principal S. K. Maiyo came in. The school was turned into a National School during his tenure. Kapsabet High School – National status The national school status now means that Kapsabet would be expected to compete with the other established national schools such as Alliance, Mangu and Maseno. The elevation to that status was in recognition of its rich heritage and good performance. It was also to ensure that more and more students have a chance to obtain a high quality education and to ease the pressure on the existing national schools. However, it meant also that fewer local students would be admitted into the school. Conclusion Regardless of the arguments for or against the new status, it is clear that Kapsabet has come a long way in its 90 years that we celebrate today. In the previous examination classes, the students have continued to astound everyone in their success and exemplary performance. The next decade will bring the school to a full centenary since inception but in it will also be new challenges facing the school as it charts its path into the next century. © Godfrey K.
