Wolność twórcy – słów kilka o twórczości Julii Datchenko
Ukraińska sztuka użytkowa jest uznawana za jedną z najbogatszych i najlepszych na świecie. Wśród różnych jej aspektów wycinanka zasługuje na szczególną uwagę. Wraz z obrazami na piecach, haftowanymi ręcznikami, rzeźbionymi drewnianymi przedmiotami gospo-darstwa domowego i wyrobami tkanymi, wycinanki stanowiły podstawę dekoracji wnętrza chłopskiego domu. Wycinanka powstaje w wyniku wycięcia złożonej kartki papieru, a charakterystyczne dlań są rytmiczne wzory. Istnieją wycinanki pojedyncze, złożone i połączone. Pojedyncze – wykonane są z jednego, jednokolorowego arkusza papieru. Skomplikowane wycinanki są zawsze polichromowane, wykonywane z kilku arkuszy wielobarwnego papieru, przy czym dzielą się one na składane i nakładane.
Julia Datchenko uczyła się pisania jaj i wycinanki u Andrija Puszkarijewa, znanego ukraińskiego artysty. Przechodząc do sztuki ludowej, jej języka symbolicznego i obrazowania, artystka stworzyła jednak własny styl, zgodny z tradycjami ukra-ińskiej wycinanki ludowej, a jednocześnie ujawniła się jako artystka ekspresyjna. Dekoracyjne papierowe panele Datchenko są wyjątkowe ze względu na autorską stylizację elementów zaczerpniętych z pisanek, wyróżniają się specjalnymi ażurami i gładkimi liniami. Jej prace cechuje przywiązanie do tradycji przy jednoczesnym stylizowaniu antycznych motywów zgodnie z estetyką współczesnego widza.
Wśród różnorodnych dzieł wyraźnie dominują prace tematyczne i fabularne, związane z symboliką odrodzenia, nieustannej odnowy, wiecznego biegu życia. W wycinankach wykorzystuje głównie motywy roślinne, antropo- i zoomorficzne, pojawiają się też elementy geometryczne. W swej twórczości artystka próbuje ukazać jajko jako centrum życia, oraz zgłębić tajemnicę drzewa życia, Oba te symbole są ściśle związane z odrodzeniem otaczającej człowieka natury a w symbo-lice chrześcijańskiej oznaczają zwycięstwo życia nad śmiercią. Jednak najbardziej ulubiony temat zdobień autorki stanowią ptaki dzikie i domowe: koguty, kury, gołębie oraz zwierzęta domowe: konie, byki i krowy oraz jej ukochane ryby.
Prace Datchenko wywodzą się z tradycji ukraińskiej wycinanki lustrzanej, przeważnie pojedynczej z jedną osią pionową, rzadziej z dwiema skrzyżowanymi. Te kompozytowe są jednak bardzo bujne i jednocześnie wyraziste. Dzieciństwo i młodość Julii Datchenko upłynęły w otoczeniu malarstwa petrikywskiego. Ciekawą kolorystykę, energię tej soczystej sztuki ludowej, wysoki stopień dekoracyjności i zastosowanych obrazów stylistycznych można prześledzić w nakładkowych, aplikacyjnych wzorach.
W panelach dekoracyjnych artystka używa zarówno białego, jak i kolorowego papieru. Często dla podkreślenia efektu przyciemnia główne detale papierowym podkładem w innym kolorze. Julia Datchenko przejęła praktykę tonowania papieru (czasami kontrastowo jasnego) od swojego nauczyciela Andrija Puszkarijewa i szeroko go propaguje, nadając pracom szczególny, emocjonalny nastrój.
Jednak nie tylko w warstwie artystycznej tkwi siła twórczości Julii Datchenko. Ta pełna radości życia i wydawałoby się bardzo ekspresyjna osoba jest niezwykle wrażliwym odbiorcą zdarzeń z otaczającego nas świata. Stąd też i obecność ogromnej ilości rozmaitych zwierząt, roślin, stanowiących przeciwwagę dla erozyjnej działalności człowieka. Ale to w pełni przemyślany i poukładany aspekt ekologicznya nie tylko wpływ aktualnej mody. Sama artystka jest miłośniczką natury, zwłaszcza zwierząt. Często pojawiający się motyw kobiecy ma natomiast ścisły związek z wolnomyślicielstwem twórczyni, co wspaniale ilustruje jej dzieło „Wolność myśli”. Nic tak znakomicie nie zespala wszystkich aspektów twórczości Julii Datchenko jak tryptyk „Spalone skrzydła”. Ptaki spadające z budynków rozrywanych wybuchami, ptaki drżące w schronach i ptaki mimo tego ogromnego wymiaru nieszczęścia wciąż wzbijające się ku niebu. Ludowość, ekspresja i wolność…
Artist’s freedom – some words about the Yulia Datchenko’s creativity
Ukrainian applied art is considered one of the richest and greatest in the world. The vytynankа deserves special attention among its various types. Along with stove paintings, embroidered rushnyks, wooden crafted household items and weaved products, vytynanky were the basis of the peasant home’s interior decoration. The vytynanky are created by cutting out a folded sheet of paper, and is characterized by rhythmic patterns. There are singular, folded and combined vytynanky. Singular ones are made from a single, one-colored sheet of paper. Compound vytynanky are always polychromatic, made from several sheets of multicolored paper. They are divided into folded and overlaid.
Yulia Datchenko learned egg painting and vytynanky art from Andriy Pushkarev, a wellknown Ukrainian artist. Turning to folk art, its symbolic language and images, the artist nevertheless created her own style. It is in keeping the traditions of Ukrainian folk vytynanky, and at the same time revealing herself as an expressive artist. Yulia Datchenko’s decorative paper panels are unique due to the author’s stylization of Pysanky’s elements, distinguished by special perforations and smooth lines. Her works are characterized by a dedication to tradition accompanied by the stylization of ancient motifs in accordance with the contem-porary viewer’s aesthetics.
The thematic and narrative works clearly dominate. They are related to the symbolism of revival, constant renewal, and the eternal life flw. Yulia Datchenko mainly uses floal, anthropo- and zoomorphic motifs in vytynanky, but geometric elements also appear. The artist’s work tries to show the egg as the center of life, and to explore the mystery of the tree of life. Both of these symbols are closely related to the revival of the surrounding nature and represent the victory of life over death in Christian symbolism. However, the author’s most favorite ornament subjects are wild and domestic birds (roosters, chickens, pigeons), domestic animals (horses, bulls and cows), and her beloved fish.
Yulia Datchenko’s works originate from the tradition of Ukrainian mirror vytynanky, mostly single with one vertical axis, seldom with two crossed. However, the composite ones are also very lush and expressive. Julia’s childhood and youth were surrounded by Petrykivka painting. The interesting colors, the energy of this vivacious folk art, the high level of decoration and the applied stylistic images can be traced in the overlaid, application patterns.
The artist uses both white and colored paper in the decorative panels. She often shades the main details with a diffeent-colored background paper to highlight the effect. Yulia Datchenko took over the practice of paper toning (sometimes contrastingly bright) from her teacher Andriy Pushkarev. She widely practices it, adding a special emotional mood to the works.
But the power of Yulia Datchenko’s work is not only in the artistic layer. This lively and expressive person is an extremely sensitive spectator to the events of the surrounding world. The artist is a great lover of nature. Thus, the presence of a great number of various animals, plants, creatures in her works - even from outside the folk vytynanky tradition - acts as a counterweight to the destructive human activities. However, this is a thoroughly planned and organized ecological aspect and not just the influenceof modern trends. Her works are not simple didactic narratives about the relationship between man and nature, like those in literature and mass media today. They are the archetype journeys referring to the pattern of fairy tales and fables, an anthropological image of the fantasy world that does not exist. Yulia Datchenko’s vytynanky are full of doubt, nostal-gia, sorrow and sadness. The artist has an unusually broad cognitive mind, and is open to the others.
The female motif that appears in her work along with the clear archetypal back-ground (the source of life, fertility, Mother Earth and others), is closely related to the creator’s free-thinking. This is perfectly illustrated in the work „Freedom of thoughts”. Above the
heads of the two women are whirling stripes symbolizing thoughts and infinityspirals. This is a unique image of the continuous and multifaceted imagination. The women’s faces are half blank and half covered with a mask veiled with an aura of mystery. Their adjoining hands form the ancient symbol of vagina. From it arose the mythical tree of life, settled by birds following the sun. The lack of frames in this work deepens the impression of transience and freedom. Women in Yulia Datchenko’s work are creatures full of feelings: love, joy, sympathy, empathy, tears, hate, jealousy. Her female characters in „Those who walk in circles” are somehow like harpies, but definitelymore dramatic and erotic. Characters’ madness here is highlighted by the multiple spirals and whirlinglike trumpets. In „Longing” the creatures try to reach the mystery of existence, life, freedom. But they are connected to the earth too tightly (stitched, wrapped with strips, clawed into the ground) and their hearts became poisoned by an ancient viper. „From the native land” is the artist’s firstwork made in Poland. The deer with a woman’s face carries the sun that gives life. The flyingfemale birds sym-bolize freedom. The deer flies abve the ground without touching it.
The artist left her beloved Dnipro together with her family because of the war. This topic is reflectedin her work as well. The triptych „Burnt Wings” is the best representation of all aspects of Yulia Datchenko’s work. Wingless birds (ptushki) fall from exploded buildings, birds tremble in shelters and the birds’ spirits rise above the ashes. Folksiness, expression, nostalgia, sadness... and still that freedom of thoughts.
