At Misericordia, students are challenged to not only find their own voice, but to carve out their unique path to success. It is an environment conducive to self-expression as well as collaborative learning. As an advantage of attending a small institution, students are given opportunities to truly live out their dreams, gaining the experience that will carry them forward in life. In effect, they are proudly writing their own chapters of success.

because I knew it would help make my dream come true. Not only was personal attention and one-on-one interaction highlighted at Misericordia, but encouraged as well. My undergraduate education is much more than just a degree. The professors and staff members I have met along the way at Misericordia is why my dream is coming true. Their encouragement and confidence in me helped me believe that I was capable of coming this far.” “One life lesson that I learned is providing service. I tend to think of doing extravagant things, but really service can be something much simpler than that. I believe service can be as effortless as holding a door for someone.” ~ LYDIA WATKINS ‘15 B.S. “One of the many amazing

aspects of Misericordia is that

students are able to form close

relationships with their professors, who truly want them to succeed. Throughout my undergraduate

education, I always knew that if I

needed anything at all, I could go to any of my professors and they

would be happy to help. My advisor, Dr. Fedor,

has gone above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed to achieve my goal. The

personal attention, support, and opportunities that Misericordia offered played a vital role in my success as a student and acceptance to TCMC.”

“I’ve learned the importance of being an

active member of the community and helping

those in need. Over the past four years at MU, I’ve participated in many community service

events. Whether it was volunteering my time tutoring peers, raising funds for charities, or

brightening someone’s day at the local nursing home, being involved in the community has instilled within me the importance of

compassion, an open mind, positive attitude, and willingness to help others.”

MENTORSHIP AND

RESEARCH

Four out of five Misericordia students participate in an internship, fieldwork, or a clinical experience before they graduate. Many students will do several. These opportunities give you hands-on experience in workplace settings, let you “try out” a career to find out what you like (or don’t like), and help you understand how what you learned in the classroom applies in the real world.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING Internships and experiential learning are a big part of the Misericordia experience. We want you to get out of the classroom to learn from the world and develop the professional skills you need to be successful. Regardless of your major, research is a major component in your learning, giving you the practical knowledge and developing a diversified portfolio as preparation for your future career. Misericordia’s faculty take an active role in supporting and guiding students with their academic endeavors inside and outside the classroom. They genuinely care about their students’ futures and realize that your success is our success.

“The faculty and staff of the Misericordia Communications department provided me with a strong foundation as I went into my professional career. I did two internships as a Misericordia student, both under the supervision of Dr. Melissa Sgroi, and I received excellent feedback from my supervisors at both news stations.”

THE

VALUE

OF MENTORSHIP “Misericordia has given me an education I can be proud of - one that has prepared me to face medical school with a strong sense of confidence and drive. Here I have had the opportunity to be part of a collaborative research project for the past three years, spend a semester dissecting a cadaver in the gross anatomy lab, and plan a conference that brings local healthcare providers together with prospective students. Earning my degree in biology has been both a challenging and defining journey. In the future, I will look back on my time here with the greatest appreciation for the professors and students who shaped me into the person I am today.” ~ RACHEL BOHN ’16 B.S. Biology, Chemistry minor Graduate School: The Commonwealth Medical College

14

Biology major Rachel Bohn has been working on the “Mutagenesis Approach to Disrupt PAK2: A Protein Involved in Breast Cancer’’ project since it began in September 2013 on campus and at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) in Scranton, Pa. One of two valedictorians for the Class of 2016, she has been engrossed in the exciting cancer research project with fellow undergraduate research scientists, as well as faculty mentors, Dr. DiPino and Jun Ling, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular biology at TCMC. Even though Bohn’s mother is an alumna, she did not seriously consider attending Misericordia because of its intimate size – until she made her first official visit. The Crestwood High School graduate mistakenly believed she needed to attend a “big’’ school in order to realize her dream of attending medical school.

“THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MY CAREER IS WORKING

WITH RESEARCH STUDENTS’. ~ FRANK DIPINO, PH.D. PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY

“I really loved it,’’ she says, recalling her first impression of Misericordia more than four years ago. “I felt at home here, and that’s really important to me. After I came here, I went to other schools and they did not compare. I didn’t know what I was looking for (when I was looking at colleges), but when I came here I saw it.’’ To watch a video about the value of mentorship at Misericordia University, visit bit.ly/mumentorship.

“Despite having taught at Misericordia for years, I am still impressed with how much my fellow faculty members are

dedicated to helping students learn, do well in their courses, and graduate ‘on time.’ The professors at Misericordia really create a nurturing learning environment.”

AND STUDY ABROAD

COMMUNITY

SERVICE

Service is an important part of the Misericordia experience. Our Catholic heritage and our founding by the Sisters of Mercy inspire us to work to make the world more just and more humane. Students work at soup

kitchens, clean the environment, build homes with Habitat for Humanity, mentor at –risk kids, and get involved in many other worthwhile ways, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

SERVICE

While attending Misericordia in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Misericordia Becka Bisset and six other Misericordia University Doctor of Physical Therapy students volunteered at a Stroke Camp in Jamaica under the supervision of Heather Fritz, P.T., D.P.T., assistant professor of physical therapy.

While on this service trip, working at the Friends of Ridge United’s Stroke Camp, students provided intensive physical therapy treatments for eight hours a day over five days to seven patients who were post-stroke and one client with cervical myelopathy. In a country where clinical services for people with handicaps are limited, many Jamaicans rely upon volunteers at nonprofit organizations for clinical services. “We gained a sense of humility (from the Jamaicans),’’ says Bisset, who also has volunteered in the past for Big Brothers Big Sisters and at regional soup kitchens. “Patients learned from us as therapists, but we learned just as much, if not more, from our patients’ stories, personalities and determination. You are able to apply your own skillset in a new environment; you bring a therapeutic purpose to patients, and you learn to bring your own sense of community to each therapy session. The focus is on the patient’s goals rather than the therapist’s goals for the patient.’’

20

Bisset along with her fellow students were able to utilize their skills for the betterment of the underserved. They share a combined sentiment of how each of them experienced a sense of community, camaraderie and appreciation from the patients they now call friend. “The most remarkable thing was the bond the students developed with each other and their patients,’’ Dr. Fritz says. “I am very proud of their willingness to learn, their ability to communicate, and their empathy and compassion. They had very little clinical experience before the trip and they all implemented the hands-on skills they needed to effectively treat patients with neurological conditions with confidence.’’ The Stroke Camp partners with physical therapy programs at Arcadia University, Glenside, Pa.; Duke University, Durham, N.C.; Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., and Misericordia University is one of only six colleges and universities in the country to provide services to the Stroke Camp in Jamaica.

Giving back to the community, students eagerly get involved in service projects and initiatives that contribute to the betterment of their fellow human being. We encourage students to immerse themselves in other cultures to be enlightened within the classroom

of life. Through such experiences, they develop compassion for others and skills that cannot be replicated within the traditional classroom. They truly represent the Misericordia charisms of mercy, service, hospitality, and justice; and through our Study Abroad and Service Learning programs, they advance our mission throughout the world.

SUCCESS

CAREER

IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT

SUCCESS, HOW ABOUT A CHART TOPPER?

You have to admit, his story would make good lyrics for a song: A rookie songwriter moves to Nashville, Tenn., to pursue his dreams; after 10 years of hard work, he climbs to the top of the charts with a No. 1 hit country single, and meets the love of his life. Fiction? No, it is reality for Misericordia alumnus Matt Rogers ’04, whose song We Went, was recorded by country artist Randy Houser and hit No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Country Air Play charts in March. The song is the lead single for Houser’s fourth studio album, Fired Up, released by Stony Creek Records on March 11. For Rogers, who writes about 100 songs a year, hitting No. 1 in the country genre is a dream come true. According to Billboard, sales of the song in the U.S. have exceeded 300,000. Matt, whose father Barry Rogers, brother Eric Rogers ’08, nephew Joseph Rogers ’06, and Joseph’s wife, Kari Bratt Rogers

26

’06 all followed him through Misericordia, earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2004. Aiming for a career as a music journalist, he went on to Syracuse University for a master’s degree in journalism. While there, it was an internship with Country Music Today magazine that lead him to Nashville, and his first job as a reporter for HealthLeaders Magazine. A guitar and piano player as well as a singer, he also performed in the area hoping to find his break into the recording industry. Rogers is currently employed by ole, an international rights management company in Nashville. Rogers says his Misericordia University background provided him a solid foundation, which he relies upon everyday. “I have carried with me what I learned during so many writing intensive classes in English and Philosophy at Misericordia. In particular, I am very picky about grammar and tenses,” he says. “Not everybody, especially in the country world,

is as concerned with grammar as I am – truthfully, I fear it is a dying art form. “I really can’t think of any job better than being a staff songwriter,” he says. “At ole, we have a great circle of about 12 writers and working with them is always very productive. I am extremely lucky to be able to make a career out of a hobby.”

By all accounts, life is good for the Kingston, Pa., native. What might be the best part of Rogers’ story is that he met his fiancée, Shellien Kinsey, when they both worked for Better Angels, a company taken over by ole three years ago.

CAREER

SUCCESS “I knew when I was looking at colleges that I wanted to go into occupational therapy. I had worked at a summer camp for disabled children, and it was so satisfying working with the kids and helping them meet their goals. “The OT program at Misericordia really prepared me well to start my own business. The faculty were good at fostering confidence. The classes were small and professors taught to each individual student. I learned to be confident and try things. It was a great atmosphere to develop as a professional. “I started the clinic in 2003. We do pediatric

CAREER

SUCCESS

A big reason Misericordia grads are so successful in the workplace is all the workplace experience they get as students. In recent years they’ve had internships and clinical experiences with hospitals, advertising firms, newspapers, professional sports teams, multinational corporations, schools, research laboratories, securities traders, political campaigns, law firms, accounting firms, and many other organizations across a wide range of fields. Career Success. Guaranteed. A lot of colleges say they’ll prepare you for a good job when you graduate. At Misericordia, we guarantee it. With our Guaranteed Placement Program, if you don’t have a job in your field within six months of graduating, we’ll find you a paid internship to help you get your career on track. Among students who complete the program, the job placement rate is 100 percent. And even among those who don’t take part, our placement rate is impressive. Why such a strong record of career success? One reason is the kind of education you get, linking classroom study to real-world experiences through clinics, internships, and other opportunities. And then there is the wide range of programs we offer to prepare you for the workplace, like résumé workshops, mock interviews, job fairs, workshops on entrepreneurship, networking with
