Biology major Rachel Bohn has been working on the “Mutagenesis Approach to Disrupt PAK2: A Protein Involved in Breast Cancer’’ project since it began in September 2013 on campus and at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) in Scranton, Pa. One of two valedictorians for the Class of 2016, she has been engrossed in the exciting cancer research project with fellow undergraduate research scientists, as well as faculty mentors, Dr. DiPino and Jun Ling, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular biology at TCMC. Even though Bohn’s mother is an alumna, she did not seriously consider attending Misericordia because of its intimate size – until she made her first official visit. The Crestwood High School graduate mistakenly believed she needed to attend a “big’’ school in order to realize her dream of attending medical school.

SERVICE
While attending Misericordia in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Misericordia Becka Bisset and six other Misericordia University Doctor of Physical Therapy students volunteered at a Stroke Camp in Jamaica under the supervision of Heather Fritz, P.T., D.P.T., assistant professor of physical therapy.
While on this service trip, working at the Friends of Ridge United’s Stroke Camp, students provided intensive physical therapy treatments for eight hours a day over five days to seven patients who were post-stroke and one client with cervical myelopathy. In a country where clinical services for people with handicaps are limited, many Jamaicans rely upon volunteers at nonprofit organizations for clinical services. “We gained a sense of humility (from the Jamaicans),’’ says Bisset, who also has volunteered in the past for Big Brothers Big Sisters and at regional soup kitchens. “Patients learned from us as therapists, but we learned just as much, if not more, from our patients’ stories, personalities and determination. You are able to apply your own skillset in a new environment; you bring a therapeutic purpose to patients, and you learn to bring your own sense of community to each therapy session. The focus is on the patient’s goals rather than the therapist’s goals for the patient.’’

Bisset along with her fellow students were able to utilize their skills for the betterment of the underserved. They share a combined sentiment of how each of them experienced a sense of community, camaraderie and appreciation from the patients they now call friend. “The most remarkable thing was the bond the students developed with each other and their patients,’’ Dr. Fritz says. “I am very proud of their willingness to learn, their ability to communicate, and their empathy and compassion. They had very little clinical experience before the trip and they all implemented the hands-on skills they needed to effectively treat patients with neurological conditions with confidence.’’ The Stroke Camp partners with physical therapy programs at Arcadia University, Glenside, Pa.; Duke University, Durham, N.C.; Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., and Misericordia University is one of only six colleges and universities in the country to provide services to the Stroke Camp in Jamaica.

You have to admit, his story would make good lyrics for a song: A rookie songwriter moves to Nashville, Tenn., to pursue his dreams; after 10 years of hard work, he climbs to the top of the charts with a No. 1 hit country single, and meets the love of his life. Fiction? No, it is reality for Misericordia alumnus Matt Rogers ’04, whose song We Went, was recorded by country artist Randy Houser and hit No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Country Air Play charts in March. The song is the lead single for Houser’s fourth studio album, Fired Up, released by Stony Creek Records on March 11. For Rogers, who writes about 100 songs a year, hitting No. 1 in the country genre is a dream come true. According to Billboard, sales of the song in the U.S. have exceeded 300,000. Matt, whose father Barry Rogers, brother Eric Rogers ’08, nephew Joseph Rogers ’06, and Joseph’s wife, Kari Bratt Rogers

’06 all followed him through Misericordia, earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2004. Aiming for a career as a music journalist, he went on to Syracuse University for a master’s degree in journalism. While there, it was an internship with Country Music Today magazine that lead him to Nashville, and his first job as a reporter for HealthLeaders Magazine. A guitar and piano player as well as a singer, he also performed in the area hoping to find his break into the recording industry. Rogers is currently employed by ole, an international rights management company in Nashville. Rogers says his Misericordia University background provided him a solid foundation, which he relies upon everyday. “I have carried with me what I learned during so many writing intensive classes in English and Philosophy at Misericordia. In particular, I am very picky about grammar and tenses,” he says. “Not everybody, especially in the country world,

Resident students live on campus in one of five coed residences, in an on-campus townhouse complex, or several university lower campus houses. The residence halls offer single, double, and suite-style living arrangements, and include group lounges, kitchens, and laundry facilities. The Cougars compete in the Middle Atlantic Conference and the Freedom Conference. We field 25 NCAA Division III teams for men and women (see list on page 37), and offer exceptional facilities for sports and recreation, including the new $4.1 million John and Mary Metz Field House and Tambur Baseball Field. Cougar teams are perennial contenders for postseason competition, and each year Cougar athletes are well-represented on All-Conference teams. ARTS AND SCIENCES Biochemistry Contemporary advances in scientific understanding routinely emerge from this interdisciplinary field, which explores the complexities of living organisms at a molecular level. The major in bio-chemistry offers excellent preparation for graduate study or for careers in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, and biotechnology industries. Biology Gain a strong background in various areas of the biological sciences, including botany, microbiology, genetics, anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, and zoology, among others. The major provides a solid foundation for a wide range of careers in science, as well as for professional studies in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and other fields. Chemistry Knowledge of chemistry is fundamental to success in many fields of science. Class instruction, laboratory work, and opportunities to conduct research build a strong foundation for graduate work, professional study in medicine and related fields, and careers in science. Clinical Laboratory Science is a degree that culminates in a yearlong clinical experience that leads to a career as a clinical laboratory technician. The program is firmly grounded in study of biology and chemistry, and

during their final year students gain handson experience in a hospital laboratory. Major affiliate hospitals include Lancaster General Hospital, Robert Packer Hospital, and Williamsport Hospital. Computer Science The curriculum follows recommendations of the Association of Computing Machinery to offer a career focused learning experience with a firm foundation in the liberal arts. Students work with the latest computer resources as they prepare for careers in programming, systems analysis, and other computerrelated fields. English majors choose one of two tracks— the Literature Track or the Professional Writing Track. This flexible major is a springboard to careers in teaching, writing, journalism, law, and any other profession that values strong communication skills. Government, Law and National Security, GLNS, is designed to prepare students to enter the expanding national security workforce within both the government and the private sector. Students will achieve an integrated knowledge of political science, legal studies, behavioral science, management, history and national security studies focused on the deterrence, detection, and mitigation of domestic and international threats to the public safety.
History By looking critically at events of the past, history majors gain insight into human complexity, develop outstanding communication and critical-thinking skills, and gain a richer perspective and a greater awareness of contemporary issues of national and global importance. Mathematics is a cornerstone of the physical, life, and social sciences, and the methods and techniques of mathematics are vital in research, commerce, government, and other fields that rely on statistical measurement and computation methods. Our broad curriculum engages students in both classical and contemporary areas of mathematics. Medical and Health Humanities is a growing field of interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration as related to medicine and healthcare. Students are prepared for future employment and a life of serving others with respect, compassion, and empathy. As a collaboration of academic disciplines, the program offers a broad educational experience that will challenge students to view healthcare through the lens of cultural, spiritual, familial, philosophical, mental, and social conditions. Students also benefit from the diverse range of faculty within the various disciplines that compose the major.
Philosophy The philosophy major stresses critical thinking and clear judgment to offer insight into human complexity and the meaning of life. Courses explore the conceptual foundations of the philosophical tradition and engage students in explorations of such issues as freedom, justice, personal authenticity, and morality. Psychology Students gain understanding of human behavior, cognitive processes, and social interaction through a far-ranging curriculum that includes study of perception, personality, cognition, psychopathology, child and adolescent psychology, research methods, and other areas of psychology. A psychology major is the first step on many career paths, and is also ideal preparation for advanced study in psychology.

Accounting The accounting major combines courses in the liberal arts with accounting, business, tax law, and other areas to develop critical thinking skills and technical proficiency in accounting, the language of business. Internships with accounting firms and other businesses enrich the classroom experience. You can add a fifth year of full-time education at MU that will lead to an MBA in addition to the BS in Accounting. Our curriculum will satisfy the 150-hour COA requirement enacted by most states. Business Administration Students gain a strong background in business plus an opportunity to tailor their degree to meet their personal and professional interests. Majors may choose a minor in financial services, supply chain management, or management information systems. The curriculum meets the needs of those who plan to go right into their career after graduation. You can add a fifth year of full-time education at MU that will lead to an MBA. Health Care Management Misericordia’s program combines a strong foundation in the study of business with advanced courses that will prepare students to succeed in the modern health care system. This degree is available to those seeking the Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree.

Information Technology Students gain knowledge of the technical aspects of information technology plus experience with business writing, making presentations, and other important skills. Students may choose to specialize in information systems, e-business development, or information technology security. Mass Communications and Design A comprehensive curriculum covers print and broadcast journalism, photojournalism, public relations, audio and video production, film, and other areas to prepare
students for careers in one of the most rapidly changing industries. Exceptional facilities for video and audio production support this versatile major. English Study of English hones critical reading, writing, and thinking skills. Professional Studies The professional studies program gives students (typically who have previous college credit) an opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in a professionally focused field. Students develop individual programs of study in consultation with an advisor.
Sport Management The major builds on students’ love of sport to prepare them for rewarding careers in the rapidly growing, multi-million dollar sport management industry. Courses in sport law, management science, sport and society, sports marketing, and athletic administration are all part of a flexible curriculum that allows students to tailor the major to suit their professional interests.

HEALTH SCIENCES AND EDUCATION COLLEGE OF
The Applied Behavioral Science major is an interdisciplinary social science program that equips graduates with a solid academic foundation to enter careers in the human and social service fields. Students learn about relationships, problem solving, ethics, and conflict resolution. Professions that find this degree useful are first responders, security personnel, as well as penal system personnel and parole officers.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography majors are educated in the areas of Abdominal and OB/GYN sonography and are eligible to apply for national certification examinations. In addition to Abdominal and OB/GYN, the program offers a solid foundation in vascular sonography. The Sonography Department has an excellent reputation for preparing well-qualified entry-level sonographers who succeed in their careers. Moreover, Misericordia’s liberal arts curriculum will allow students to adapt to an ever-changing healthcare system working with an increasingly diverse population. Students also achieve clinical placements at state-of-the-art facilities with close supervision by faculty. Education Teacher education has been a Misericordia strength from the university’s earliest years. Today’s students gain outstanding preparation for teaching careers as they choose from majors in seven

areas: early childhood education (K-4), middle level (4-8), and secondary education in biology, chemistry, citizenship, English and mathematics. Special Education is incorporated into the K-4 level, and is an option in the other levels.
Health Science: Patient Navigation Specialization prepares students as a professional within an emerging field of patient advocacy. Students develop the skill-set to guide patients, caregivers, and family members through a treatment plan with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Understanding the current health care trends and issues, students have the ability to positively impact the patient experience by providing access to better care and assistance. Students will successfully communicate and interview patients to assess barriers to care while identifying and explaining health resources available. Medical Imaging The major blends classroom study with laboratory experiences using modern medical-imaging technologies to prepare students for careers in radiography, sonography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other imaging fields. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
Nursing Misericordia approaches nursing as an art of caring, and nursing education blends the liberal arts and professional studies to prepare students for success in this important, high-demand field. Our graduates are skilled nurse generalists capable of working in a variety of settings. We offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Occupational Therapy Students gain the skills and knowledge they need to help individuals who may be injured or disabled achieve independence in their lives. This is a five-year program, and students receive both a bachelor’s degree in health science and a professional entry-level master’s degree in occupational therapy, which is required for professional practice. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. A Doctorate in Occupational Therapy and post-master’s certificates are also offered.
Social Work A combination of classroom theory and practical experience working in a social welfare agency gives students excellent preparation for professional practice in social work serving individuals, families, communities, and organizations. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Speech-Language Pathology The study of speech-language pathology prepares students to work in a range of settings assisting children and adults with communication disorders. Our program is rare among speech-language pathology programs in that it accepts students right out of high school into study leading to a professional master’s degree.
Physical Therapy The program emphasizes clinical decision-making and development of problem-solving skills to prepare students for careers in physical therapy. The Physical Therapy program is a 6 1 ⁄2 year professional program resulting in a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
