To create an Misericordia education, we start with a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences, then layer on a variety of professionally focused programs in dozens of high-demand fields—in health sciences, information technology, business, management, and many more. Next we build in a compelling array of opportunities to enrich your learning, like internships, study abroad, and independent research. You learn from faculty who are leaders in their fields, who challenge you intellectually and creatively, and who do everything in their power to bring out your best. Then we put it all on an inviting 123-acre campus, with an expanding lower campus, where classes are small, resources are abundant, and the entire environment is designed to help you learn, grow, and succeed. Along the way, you’ll also discover how service to others, in the tradition of our founders, the Religious Sisters of Mercy, is a key ingredient to your success. What this all adds up to is a first-rate education at a top-tier university designed with one purpose in mind—to help you along the path to a rewarding and prosperous future.

“Not in my wildest dreams would I ever imagine that we would have a business of this magnitude. Tom Boffa Business Administration

They met at Misericordia freshman orientation never expecting that three years later they would be partners and entrepreneurs in a business selling specialty sauces across the county and potentially around the world.

Growing up around his family’s well-known restaurant in Middletown, NY, Tom Boffa, a business administration major, knew that just about everybody loved his grandfather Tony’s spaghetti sauce. And he had the idea that it would be great to sell. He shared his thoughts with his new friend, Dustin Watts, a marketing major from Rush, PA, and the idea for a new business was born. Seeking help from marketing professor and advisor John Mellon, Ed.D., the two worked their way through business and financial plans, FDA approvals, patent applications, recipe adaptations, production contracts, labeling, bottling and marketing. Getting a “thumbs up” from some first generation

Italian residents during a taste test in the Bronx, NY, they knew they were on their way. The first run produced 56 cases of the Original Tomato Sauce. Now they are producing 200 cases of each of four varieties of the sauces every three months. The Tony Boffa Sauces are being sold through food brokers in Texas and California, and across the country in Whole Foods supermarkets, that specialize in organic and health-conscious items. “Highly mature, motivated and quality idea generators are only a few of Tom and Dustin’s attributes. They used planning, managing, evaluating and remedial action stages, as a logical method of thinking, to improve the quality of life when working with other individuals, groups, and organizations,” says Dr. Mellon.

MAKING ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN Y O U R E D U C AT I O N

"You never feel like an inconvenience when you go to a professor for help. They are more than willing to sit down and discuss a topic with you until you understand it." –Carissa Stonier English

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) lists Misericordia University among the leading colleges and universities surveyed in several key areas, and that makes all the difference in the world for your education. The NSSE measures the level of student involvement in learning, looking at such things as classroom participation, close contact with faculty members, participation in internships, the extent to which students are asked to analyze and synthesize information, and the application of classroom theory to solve practical problems. With small, interactive classes and 12:1 student-teacher ratio, Misericordia professors know your name, know you, care about you, care that you come to class (and may just call you if you don’t), and provide the right mix of challenge and support to help you succeed. And learning isn’t limited just to what happens in class. MU engages you inside and outside the classroom in a rich and multifaceted educational experience. www.misericordia.edu/NSSE

Engagement in Learning

What you think matters. What you say matters. Who you are matters.

When you’re in a class with only 10 or 15 other students, you’re not some anonymous entity sitting in the back row of a large auditorium. You’re a person with a mind and ideas and opinions.

17

Engagement in Learning

Four out of five Misericordia students participate in an internship, field work, or a clinical experience before they graduate. Many students will do several. These opportunities give you hands-on experience in workplace settings, let you “try out” a career to find out what you like (or don’t like), and help you understand how what you learned in the classroom applies in the real world.

Terrence Murgallis came to Misericordia for speech therapy in high school, thinking he would enter another college as an engineering student. His path changed when Dr. Glen Tellis “pitched the speech-language program to me.” He hasn’t looked back except in gratitude. Aiming to get a doctorate, become a stuttering specialist, and conduct research, Terrence has jumpstarted the process as an undergraduate. He has worked with Dr. Hunter Manasco to outline a master’s degree thesis and with Dr. Tellis to conduct research on stuttering, a fluency disorder. With ready access to faculty expertise and advanced technology, Terrence says he has rare 20

opportunities at Misericordia. He also helped start a Stuttering Support Group, the first in the region, open to the public and on its way to becoming a chapter of the National Stuttering Association. “Dr. Kathleen Scaler Scott is on the NSA board and was instrumental in helping us,” Terrence says. “Now we’re helping others, and that feels great.” Terrence is conducting research using Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy, a non-invasive technology that measures hemoglobin concentrations associated with neural activity. “Misericordia,” he says, “is one of only five institutions in the nation doing this.”

PEOPLE CARE HERE

“Students at Misericordia go out of their way to make it feel like home for new residents and students.” –Katie O’Hearn Occupational Therapy

They care about their education, they care about their future, they care about each other and the people of the world. Misericordia is a close-knit community of learners where friendships form quickly and often last a lifetime. Part of the reason for this is simply that relationships happen more easily on a campus of about 3,000 students than they do on a campus of 20,000 or more. But caring about others is also just a big part of who we are. For our founders, the Religious Sisters of Mercy, it is a way of life that is very much present today. The close-knit campus makes it easy to get involved, and you’ll find a wide and eclectic variety of ways to do just that. Connect with like-minded people in more than two dozen student organizations focused on the arts, theater, music, academic themes, community service, and other interests. Build your leadership skills in student government. Join one of 24 men’s and women’s athletics teams. Write for The Highlander, our award-winning student newspaper, or for Instress, our literary magazine. People care at Misericordia, and there’s always a lot to care about.

When surrounding communities were flooded in 2011, Misericordia served as an evacuation site. Entire families, complete with children and pets, found shelter and solace on its higher ground. Shannon Joyce, then an education major, says it changed her future direction.

“We were playing with the children, walking the dogs, and doing whatever we could to help,” she recalls. “I loved every minute because everyone was so positive and we all came together. It made me realize that I want to do service work, maybe with FEMA, so I changed my major. I want to be in the field, organizing and preparing for an emergency.” Shannon says making good friends is one of the best parts of Misericordia. As one of only two freshmen on a spring break Habitat for Humanity trip to Texas, she says, “The upperclassmen took us under their wing, watching out for us. Most of them graduated last year, but they’re still like my big brothers and sisters.”

“The first day I visited I took a tour, and my guide held a sign that read, ‘Welcome, Conor Brennan.’ This is a friendly, tight-knit community.” -Conor Brennan Government, Law and National Security

From the first encounter with Misericordia, the sense of community is evident. Conor Brennan, a government, law and national security major, decided quickly that he would fit in, and he found it easy to participate in campus activities. “I enjoy the small community,” he says. “You get to know people easily, and I’ve made close friends. You walk around and people say ‘Hello’ and open doors for you. If you need any help, there’s

always someone to talk to or to help you out. And the faculty are very accommodating. If you have an issue or concern, they’ll work it out with you. The class sizes are small so professors get to know you.” Through Campus Ministry, Conor volunteered for Habitat for Humanity projects and is now a leader of the group, learning about dry walling and plumbing along the way. “Service,” he says, “is a big thing here.”
