Dr. Ira Gall
My father instilled the belief that you have an obligation to give back to your community. He was not a wealthy man, but he believed in helping others. I am very grateful that we have been able to build on his example.
mong the scores of tributes written in his memory, caring, wise, dedicated, and humorous were the words most frequently used to describe Dr. Ira Gall. “I remember how he walked into my labor room and said, with an unlit cigar in his mouth, ‘Joyce, this isn’t going to hurt me a bit.’ He said it very fast like I wouldn’t hear it; he wanted me to hear him say ‘Joyce, this isn’t going to hurt a bit,’” shared one of Dr. Gall’s former patients after his death on March 29, 2013. Many recalled how he took time on religious holidays and during his vacations to check on them, and how he always made them feel special. While Dr. Gall brought more than 10,000 new lives into the world during his distinguished 50-year medical career, he touched even more through his generosity and charitable work – an avocation he attributed to his upbringing. “My father instilled the belief that you have an obligation to give back to your community. He was not a wealthy man, but he believed in helping others. I am very grateful that we have been able to build on his example.” Through their support of a multitude of organizations ranging from the St. Louis Zoo to Washington University’s School of Medicine to the St. Louis Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, Dr. Gall and his wife, Judith, have made a tremendous impact on the St. Louis community. Spanning nearly 60 years, the Galls’ leadership and support of Miriam has been instrumental to its success and development. Along with Tom Green, Judith co-chaired the campaign to build a new Miriam School building in the early 1990s and the Galls contributed a lead gift to the project. In 2010, the Galls led the effort for facility expansion by co-chairing, with Peggy and Jerry Ritter, the campaign to construct the Mary Ann Lee Gymnasium. The Galls’ commitment to philanthropy and Miriam was never more distinct than in 2002 when, at a time of tragic loss, they established the Jeffrey Scott Gall Memorial Scholarship Tribute Fund in memory of their eldest son. The fund provides need-based tuition assistance for Miriam School families and was chosen by his family as the sole recipient for the nearly 200 donations given in memory of Dr. Gall. Rabbi Amy Feder of Temple Israel said in her eulogy for Dr. Gall, “He never really saw just how amazing he was, and that modesty was passed on with the idea that anyone, if they work hard, can accomplish anything in life. If we keep his words, his passion for life, for education, and for giving people the full respect and attention that each of them merit — if we keep these traits alive, he will be with us always.” m
