Say yes to a date with someone you would never expect to like. And ladies, don’t expect the guy to always ask you out first. You will receive date ideas, learn about the latest dating apps and websites, and learn the do’s and don’t of dating in college. You will also learn how I met my current significant other, who I also view as my future life partner. I met him unexpectedly inside Lang Hall on campus the old fashioned way. True love really comes unexpectedly and when you are not looking for it. I hope my story inspires more young love. Old School Love Story By Miranda Koch The best things in life really do happen unexpectedly. The image on the left page shows an average tan bench that is located inside Lang Hall on University of Northern Iowa’s campus. This bench is a lot more than just an average bench to me because this is the exact spot that sparked my relationship with my forever love, Preston Jensen. Preston and I had Reporting Methods Class together during the Spring semester of 2017. He was a Journalism major and I was a Public Relations Major. Our class was located in lang hall, just one floor above the bench. After every single class period, I would head to this bench for a 15-minute break before I would have to head to work. One day I approached what I called “my bench” and found

Preston sitting there alone. I simply smiled, walked right up to him and politely said, “hey, you stole my spot! Mine if I sit here?!” He welcomed me and told me he was “studying” for his quiz in his next class. Instead of studying, we immediately introduced ourselves and got to talking. For the next few weeks, Preston met me at this bench after class just so we could talk for 15 short minutes and head our separate ways.

As a girl who dreamed of having that fairytale love story I thought to myself, “I really hope I like this kid because this would be such a cute story.” I later found out that he had planned this. He noticed that I sit at this bench after every class. He had rushed out of class that day, headed straight to the bench, and pretended to study, hoping I would sit next to him. The class period before he had planned this I remember leaving right behind him. We silently walked together for a few moments. I had a different feeling about him and wanting to say something. I smiled and said, “Good job on your presentation today!” I honestly couldn’t remember what he talked about but I wanted a reason to say something. He later told me how that moment gave him the “go” for the bench idea. I knew there was something different about him because of how comfortable, yet excited I felt talking with him. It was easy for the both of us to open up about our lives. We talked about our music preferences, our families, and life tragedies. After 2 or 3 weeks of meeting at the bench and chatting with each other 15 Preston took the initiative and asked if

I wanted to get a drink together. I replied with, “I thought you’d never ask!” and jokingly added, “I’d love to see you outside of this bench, too!” He immediately felt relieved and his face lit up. I wrote down my number on a piece of paper and signed “Katniss.” He laughed because the first thing he ever said the me was, “Has anyone ever told you that you look like Katniss from Hunger Games?” We have been happily dating for only 8 short months. While that truly seems like a short time, we both know we have found the one. When you know you know. I never seemed to understand that cliche line until I met Preston. Before Preston, I had never fully committed to a relationship with someone. I spent my high school and college years building strong friendships and and figuring myself out so that when I did meet my soulmate, I could be myself unapologetically. So there a few different things you can learn from this. One, don’t be afraid to take risks and two, be patient, the best things happen unexpectedly. 17

The Do’s and Don’t DO:

1) Go out of your comfort zone. Talk and date people you wouldn’t normally talk to. 2) Build trust from the start. It’s important! 3) Say yes to more dates! Take a chance on people. Even if you don’t want to pursue them, you may have made an awesome new friend. 4) Tell people how you feel. 5) Find a person who builds you up, treats you well, and supports your dreams. 6) Men: Pay for the first date. You can alternate next time but it is common curdisy. 7) Have friendships of the opposite sex with no desire to date them 8) Be old-fashioned. 9) Be kind to people if you are not interested or you later lose interest 10) Learn from each relationship, fling, or almost-relationship you have 22

ts of College Dating DON’T:

1) Identify your self worth based on the relationship you have 2) Seek out a life partner at the bar 3) Lose your friendships when you believe you’ve found a solid relationship 4) Be afraid. You don’t want to regret asking a person out. You never know what could happen! 5) Date inside your circle of friends unless that are soulmate material 6) Take a person to a movie on the 1st date. Go somewhere you can talk and get to know each other 7) Feel pressured to find someone because it seems everyone else is 8)Go crazy if college is over and you haven’t found the one. 9) Give into the pressure of doing anything until you are ready 10) CHEAT! 23
