During car week in the Valley of the Sun, a group of Mirabel Members enjoyed a preview of the cars going across the block at RM Sotheby’s. Matt Malamut, a representative of the RM Sotheby group, provided a commentary on some of the most unique cars, including a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gull Wing. One of the 70+ on offer, this Gull wing is number 13 of 24 Alloy Gull wings produced in 1955. The rarity, absolutely perfect condition, and interesting provenance are expected to generate a purchase price in the neighborhood of $7 million. As I am writing this article for the POST, car week is in full swing with numerous auctions across the Valley. Car auctions have undergone significant changes over the past few years. The auction house generating the most revenue by far in 2021 was Bring A Trailer, an online auction that sold over $830 million in cars. One of the premier auctions, Goodings, will be online with no live auction. Others like the giant Barrett-Jackson, are continuing with live auctions supplemented by phone bidders. Early indications are that prices continue to be strong for certain types of vintage automobiles, while others may be peaking. We will provide a breakdown of the results of car week in next month’s article. On February 15, we will be viewing one of the most extensive and eclectic car collections anywhere. Watch for a notice with details.
