Park Patrol Orientation

Join the Portage Park Patrol and help continue making the parks a great experience for all . Participants will delve into the responsibilities of Park Patrol volunteers, the Park Patrol Code of Conduct, complete a participation waiver, and view a Park Patrol orientation presentation . This event is a valuable opportunity for both returning volunteers and newcomers to connect with the Portage Parks & Recreation staff Establish meaningful points of contact to address concerns, learn effective ways to report maintenance issues to city staff, and be a proactive force in enhancing the park experience for everyone Snacks and coffee will be provided and returning Park Patrol members will be honored with new badges, acknowledging their continued dedication and service to the community

Rent a bicycle for a day at the BIKE PORTAGE bike station on the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail, just north of the Celery Flats pavilion Download the MOVATIC app from the App Store or Google Play, create an account then follow the prompts to pay on the app and unlock a bike Bicycles must be returned to the rental location by park close each day For more information on BIKE PORTAGE and rates, visit portagemi.gov/794

8600 South Sprinkle Road, 1/2 mile south of Centre Avenue

Ramona Park Beach offers a sandy swim area with lifeguards, kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals . The beach also includes concessions, picnic areas, beach volleyball, a playground, changing rooms, and more!

Vehicle permits for entry into Ramona Park can be obtained on-site near the park entrance during regular beach hours Proof of City of Portage residency is required to receive a FREE annual resident pass

Birding Workshop: Presentation by the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo

Enjoy a presentation from Russ Schipper of the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo . Discover different types of birds and see taxidermy birds up close! This program is designed for students ages 8 to 12 . Space is limited for this program; maximum 35 participants .

Celebrate Migratory Bird Day by taking a stroll through Eliason Nature Reserve This program includes a presentation from a biologist from the Air Zoo, with a focus on birding vocabulary and bird anatomy Learn about avian flyways, the best migratory “pit stops” in our area, and ways to support our avian friends during their epic journeys Participants are encouraged to bring their binoculars, notebooks, and pencils, and wear appropriate attire for the weather, including waterproof footwear This hike will be 1 to 3 miles long

West Lake Nature Preserve is teeming with life! Put on your citizen scientist hat, pull out your binoculars, and join the Portage District Library and Portage Parks & Recreation staff on an adventure through West Lake Nature Preserve Find out what animals, insects, fungi, and plants call this place home by participating in our annual Bio Blitz Participants will use the iNaturalist app to identify different flora and fauna in the area, finding an overall count of organisms calling West Lake Nature Preserve home This is a family-friendly event, with activities for adults and youth

Solar Eclipse Kits - Free Eclipse Glasses Provided by the Air Zoo

Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to view a total solar eclipse – where the sun, moon, and you are all in alignment! The next total solar eclipse is projected to occur in Spain in 2026, so don’t miss out On Monday April 8, the Portage and the Kalamazoo area will darken, with the solar eclipse at its peak totality around 3 PM, EST Thanks to the Air Zoo, solar eclipse packets will be made available to registered participants, while supplies last Registered participants will be emailed packet pickup details and information

JOIN THE JUNIOR RANGER CLUB

The Junior Ranger Club is an at-home, activity-based online program, designed to help you explore the Portage Park System! Earn an official Junior Ranger shield as a park steward by completing the badge activities available online. Junior Ranger Club badges can be earned by completing specific activities in arts, history, science, nature, endurance, health, service, and survival. Junior Rangers can also earn specialty badges for birding and fishing. Junior Rangers are typically ages 5 to 13, though people of all ages are encouraged to participate in the online program. The program provides families with the opportunity to explore and learn about the park system, as well as how to protect the park system now and for future generations. VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Garlic Mustard Pull

Help manage invasive species in the Portage Park system and win a prize! During May, collect as many bags of garlic mustard as you can at any of the Portage parks Then, bring your bags to Portage Parks & Recreation at 320 Library Lane for weigh in At the end of the month, the individual who pulls the most garlic mustard will win a grand prize Runners-up and participants who collect at least 50 pounds of garlic mustard will be eligible for a gift for participating All garlic mustard must be delivered to Portage Parks & Recreation by 12 PM on May 31 to be eligible

Smart Cycling

Ride smarter, learn from the pros, and gear up for a great summer full of safe cycling . Youth Tennis Camp: Presented by YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo

This camp is for beginner players ages 5 to 14 years . Participants will acquire basic knowledge of all strokes with an emphasis on playing points on a scaled-down court size utilizing developmental equipment . Match situations will be introduced . Camp meets Monday through Thursday mornings from 9 to 11 AM, with Friday as a make-up day in case of inclement weather . Maximum of 50 participants .

40th Annual Peacock Strut Walk/Run – 10K & 5K

This fun and fitness event raises funds for the Portage Community Center, the only human services agency in Portage that supports and aids Portage residents to Make Life Better . The 10K & 5K courses of the Peacock Strut wind through the beautiful Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail . The top three men and women in both the 5K and 10K will receive a plaque . Medals will be available for the top three finishers in each 10-year age category . Packet pick-up is Friday, September 13 from 5 to 7 PM and Saturday, September 14 from 7 to 8 AM at the Grain Elevator in the Celery Flats Historical Area .
