AMERICAN TURBINE, INC. Ron Gordon, general manager and current vice president, began American Turbine in 1989. Ron’s experience goes back to 1976 with Dominator Jet in Lubbock, Texas. He owned and operated Dominator for 12 years. He sold ownership and stayed on as manager for a short time. After leaving Dominator, Ron started American Turbine. The American Turbine Jet was designed from a clean sheet of paper. Ideas and improvements that had been proven in the previous years with Dominator were incorporated into American Turbine. His inventions and innovations have made American Turbine’s jets world class. Ron was the original designer of the shouldered wear ring, Max-Flow hand hole cover, and impeller sizes from the “AA” to the “9½.” American Turbine was first to offer High-Performance intakes, High-Flow bowls, and high quality investment cast stainless-steel impellers. He was also the designer of the Jacuzzi YJ Energizer kit some 30 years ago. Now we also have a Jacuzzi WJ Energizer Kit and the Panther Energizer kit.. Ron designed the High-Flow droop snoot and also the High-Flow straight snoot. In 1993 Ron sold ownership of American Turbine to Travis Garske, owner of Travis Pattern & Foundry. Since an aluminum foundry with a full CNC machine department owns American Turbine, we have complete control of our product from the ingot (raw aluminum bar) all the way to the finished product. With this kind of control we can quickly react to customer needs and boating trends. Shortly after moving to the Pacific Northwest we recognized a need to design a jet for welded aluminum boats. We introduced the SD309 early in 1994. In the year 2000 we introduced the SD312 for larger welded aluminum jet boats up to 24 feet and 6,500 pounds. In 2003 we began offering a SD312 for the fiberglass boat market. Two years later we came out with the Split Duct Reverse which offers excellent reverse and low speed control at an affordable price. We offer an SDR kit to upgrade older jets as well. Our SD203, which is an axial flow (high volume) jet drive called the Rock Crusher, appeared in 2010. The Rock Crusher is an awesome performer with a stainless-steel impeller and SDR reverse standard. And finally, after five years of development and testing, the Super Duty SD231 axial flow jet has come to market. The SD231 has many features not available on other jets such as 17-4PH stainless-steel impeller, billet intake block and grate, hydraulic reverse bucket and hydraulic trim/skid plate and, if the jet ever clogs, the clean-out is behind the transom.

OCTOBER 2015 | nwsportsmanmag.com
lines and swinging spoons on the Olympic Peninsula. After just a few minutes of swinging a gaudy purple coho fly, Wilson hooked up and landed a fish. I asked to borrow one of his single-handed rods and soon also hooked up, twice, but farmed both fish. I suspected and later had confirmed that Wilson is considered a steelheading legend among many on the Westside. Fishing multiple tactics for salmon and steelhead is something many guides cannot or will not do; most don’t have the ability to teach. Where Underwood and Lewis and their fly-fishing mentors like Wilson differ from the average-guide crowd is how their great patience and teaching skills translate to keeping anglers excited and seeking a clear, achievable standard. Assault on the Quinault guides fly anglers with expertise while also using a broad range of terminal tackle techniques.
OUR DAY ON THE Quinault was joyous and very exclusive. We saw one other boat, and it was Underwood’s brother. By the time October rolls around, the Quinault will be on fire and will remain in flames until late in the spring when the winter run of steelhead ends. October and November mark the peak for salmon angling, while December and January are best for steelhead. The quality of angling and the quality of hatchery supplementation are very evident once you spend a day fishing here. It pays to hire a tribal guide; it pays even better to be a sincere friend to one, and I loved every minute of fishing with Underwood and Lewis and thank them for their hospitality more than I can express. Both are great people and excellent guides wanting to share their Tribe’s passion for salmon and steelhead. In December I’ll feature their unique steelhead fishery and their similarly unique plans for securing their fishery for future generations. NS
