WIT Index Provides Benchmark for Gender Diversity

New research conducted by the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) in partnership with publisher FreightWaves promises to help better measure gender diversity in the transportation industry.

The organizations conducted an online survey of FreightWaves readers to determine the number of women drivers, executives and staff employed in transportation. A total of 884 respondents from across the industry completed the survey in September 2019.

The data shows that 10 percent of professional truck drivers today are women.

Approximately 25 percent of transportation industry executives are female. And women make up 43 percent of the non-executive workforce. This group includes recruiters, driver managers, dispatchers, salespeople and administrative workers.

Women are particularly well represented in safety departments, with 38 percent of fleet safety for all trucking categories managed by women.

Just 4 percent of diesel technicians and mechanics are women. Women are also needed in freight technology companies where just 16 percent of teams are women.

“This new study gives us a baseline for measuring the success of our efforts to improve gender diversity,” says WIT President and CEO Ellen Voie. “I look forward to watching the percentage of women in the industry rise as we all work together to raise awareness of the opportunities available.”
