DEVOUT Roman Catholics are familiar with the image of Jesus raising his right hand in blessing and pointing his left hand on the Sacred Heart from which flow two rays with symbolic meanings for the blood of Jesus and that which justifies the soul. The total image is a symbol of charity, forgiveness and love of God referred to as the “Fountain of Mercy.” This famous original image of Jesus with the message “I Trust in You” was drawn by the Polish artist of the Realism Movement, Eugeniusz Kazimirowski, in 1934 upon the request and direction of St. Maria Faustyna Kowalska (1905-1938), a Polish Roman Catholic nun and mystic. She wrote in her diary that Jesus told her, “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over enemies already here on earth especially at the hour of death. I, Myself, will defend it as My own glory.” Her apparitions of Jesus was the inspiration of the Roman Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy. Worshippers of the Divine Mercy commemorate the Hour of Mercy at 3:00 p.m. which, according to St. Faustyna Kowalska’s diary, is the time of the death of Jesus. The Divine Mercy Movement in Davao, on the other hand, started in September, 1987, with the vision, passion, patience and love for the devotion of the devoutly religious woman named Maria Celina PURITA Arsenia “Joji” Ilagan-Bian

Tita Inday singlehandedly planted the seeds of devotion to the Divine Mercy all over Mindanao. The gentle and charming Ilongga provided the blueprint for a Mindanao-wide Divine Mercy organization to institutionalize the movement and ensure the continuity of the propagation of the devotion not only in Mindanao but also covering the Visayas region as well.

City records 4% positivity rate BY RHODA GRACE B. SARON

THE COVID-19 Task Force lauded Davao City's four percent positivity rate as of Nov. 8, due to the downtrend of COVID-19 cases and the warm response of parents to the ongoing pediatric vaccination rollout. COVID-19 Task Force Spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser, during the COVID-19 Alert program of the

87.5 Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR) aired on Wednesday, Nov. 10, said, "Maka-happy (It really makes us happy). That means, naa ta sa (we are in the) acceptable level of positivity rate." She attributed the low positivity rate to the ongoing vaccination rollout in the city and the compliance of Dabawenyos to the public

Rookie cop hunted for death of student Minors now allowed GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews) – Police have launched extensive pursuit operations against a rookie policeman who reportedly killed a female college student and wounded two others using a high-powered service firearm in a boarding house in Koronadal City early on Thursday. Lt. Col. Maria Joyce Birrey, the spokesperson of the Police Regional Office (PRO)-12 (Soccsksargen), said police teams have been dispatched in parts of the region to locate and arrest suspect Patrolman Roland Roquero Lopez of the South Cotabato Police Mobile Force Company (PMFC). She said PRO-12 chief, Brig. Gen. Alexander Tagum, has offered a P100,000 reward for any information that could

lead to the capture of Lopez “the soonest possible time.” A police report said Lopez, 29, reportedly opened fire at the victims around 2:50 a.m. using an M16 Armalite rifle through a window of a rented room at the Oca boarding house in Gatuslao Street, Barangay Zone 3 in Koronadal City around 2:50 a.m. Charmaine Rose Canlas, 21, a graduating student of the Notre Dame of Marbel University, died on the spot as a result of the shooting. Her two companions, Joana Saptula and Debie John Franco, both 21 years old, were wounded and currently undergoing treatment at the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital in Koronadal City. Witnesses said the victims were inside the room

and already preparing to sleep when the incident happened. Lt. Col. Joedy Lito Guisinga, Koronadal City police chief, confirmed that the three initially came to the city police station past 11 p.m. Wednesday to file a report after allegedly being harassed by Pat. Lopez. He said it stemmed from a quarrel between the suspect and his reported girlfriend Saptula, a roommate of Canlas. The suspect was supposedly jealous of the perennial presence of Franco, who is a boyfriend of Canlas, at the boarding house, he said. Guisinga said Lopez, who was reportedly drunk, later returned to the area, proceeded to the room situated at the second floor of

the boarding house, and fired at the victims using a Philippine National Police-issued firearm. “That’s the initial information that we received. We’re still validating this and we will get a clearer picture once the two other victims (Saptula and Franco) become stable,” he told reporters. The police official said they immediately coordinated with the suspect’s superiors at the South Cotabato PMFC to help locate his whereabouts and facilitate his peaceful surrender. But he said Lopez, who hails from Barangay Topland in Koronadal City, has reportedly fled using his unspecified sedan-type vehicle. Birrey said the PRO-12

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews) – Starting Thursday (Nov. 11), minors below 18 years old may go inside malls and shopping centers in the city. The city COVID-19 Operations Center issued the guidelines allowing minors inside these establishments provided they are accompanied by their parents or adults. “Infants can also go inside the malls and shopping centers as long as they are accompanied by their parents or adults,” COVID-19 governance cluster head Oliver Egypto said. But lawyer Jose Edgardo Uy, chair of the city Regulatory Compliance Board said the city government stood pat

on its decision not to allow residents who are not fully vaccinated in malls and other public areas. Uy said establishment security guards were instructed to check the vaccination cards of their customers who want to go inside. “I suggest that you should carry your vaccination card always because these will be checked by the security guards,” Uy said in the press briefing today. Egypto said the carrying of vaccination cards will become mandatory replacing the barangay exit pass issued last year by the city government. “Guards will no longer check the barangay exit pass-

rising in the key economic hub of Manila. However, it said the country “remains vulnerable to COVID-19 outbreaks given disparities between regional vaccination rollouts and the lower efficacy rates of the vaccines administered.” “As of October 21, only 22.6 percent of the population had been fully vaccinated and the lower efficacy of the vaccines being used could mean that there is

a greater need for booster shots. Thus, in the near term, further disruptions could weigh on the pace of the economic recovery, and the prospects of a revival in the country’s tourism sector remain dim,” the report said. It added that “while we expect economic growth to increase further in 2022, remaining challenges will stop the Philippine economy returning to its pre-pandemic growth trajectory.” (PNA)

Agriculture performance expects turnaround in Q4 MANILA – Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar is bullish on the performance of the agriculture sector in the last quarter (Q4) of the year despite the dip in livestock that pulled down its performance in the third quarter (Q3). "We expect a better performance this fourth quarter, barring no major typhoons would visit us till yearend," Dar said in a statement late Tuesday. "We hope to post at least a one-percent growth this year, despite the many challenges we faced, and look forward to a more respectable performance in 2022, in continued partnerships with the local government units, the private sector, and organized small farmers' and fishers' groups and cooperatives," he added. (

The DA initially took pride in the high gains in the production of palay (unhusked rice) and poultry subsectors, but these were not enough to pull up the performance of the country's agriculture and fishery sectors in the third quarter of 2021. According to the latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) released Monday, it showed that the value of production in agriculture and fisheries at constant 2018 prices decreased by 2.6 percent in the third quarter of the year from a growth of 0.7 percent in the same period last year. "Despite said performance of the agri-fishery sector in the third quarter, we are heartened that palay production has remained on

Beeinfotech PH rolls out in-country AWS Outposts cloud solution for big enterprises MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Beeinfotech PH, operator of the country’s largest telco-neutral data center to date and provider of tailored colocation services, is now offering the AWS (Amazon Web Services) Outposts solution catering to large enterprises. The solution enables them to run AWS cloud services locally within Beeinfotech PH’s “The HIVE” data center while also benefiting from its flexible hosting and telco-neutral services. The rollout follows Amazon’s recent cloud infrastructure investments in the Asia-Pacific (APAC), specifically in Japan and New Zealand, and increasing cloud footprint in the region. posts offering under either a Managed Service setup or private cloud setup. Under Managed Services, enterprises don’t have to worry about costly upkeep tasks such as setup, administration, migration, and maintenance, leaving clients to only run their preferred AWS solution. Meanwhile, the private cloud setup provides enterprises more control in managing resources while only benefitting from select utilities within The HIVE. The HIVE has telco-neutral capabilities allowing it to connect the AWS racks to all telecommunication networks and switch between them for minimized downtime and uninterrupted connectivity when one goes down. The facility can also integrate the AWS Outposts racks to its Network Operations Center and Security Operations Center offerings that constantly monitor equipment performance and cyber threats to further ensure security and availability. With its upcoming Tier-III certification from the Uptime Institute and PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard)

certification, clients can be assured that the facility remains operational even during maintenance and that it meets stringent data security standards. Moreover, The HIVE is also in the process of attaining LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification that recognizes its ability to reduce carbon emissions and power consumption, which supports the company’s sustainability goals. “By removing the massive overhead that comes with managing racks, our colocation offerings improve IT efficiency and reduce operational risks. At the same time, we further bolster the scalable, flexible, and robust cloud infrastructure provided by AWS Outposts and needed by modern enterprises to drive digital transformation and deliver better performance,” said Maricar Nepomuceno, Beeinfotech PH Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning & Business Development. Upon Tita Inday’s passing in 2017, she appointed the respected Ilongga teacher/businesswoman/alajera, Emilia Sorongon vda. de Sitjar, as her successor. Under tita Emilia’s able leadership and stewardship, the Divine Mercy devotion grew in all the vicariates and parishes in the Davao and Samal Archdiocese. This year, tita Emilia has turned over the responsibility of leadership and stewardship of the Divine Mercy communities in Mindanao to the late founder’s beloved daughter, Purita Arsenia “Joji” Ilagan-Bian. Yes, no less than Davao’s respected and well-loved icon for education, business, fashion and diplomacy. “I am humbled and blessed with this great opportunity. This is quite different from the usual leadership positions I have had in the past since this is a leadership legacy. This is special for me since I am serving the Lord of the Divine Mercy Himself. It is truly a challenge as my term starts during the Covid pandemic. I need to plan and strategize well in order to revitalize the organization and its members. And yes, familiar-

ize everyone with the new technology. It’s truly challenging to be a part of the global network of the Divine Mercy Apostolates which spans from the Philippines, Asia and the World Apostolic Congress of Mercy,” disclosed Joji Ilagan-Bian. “Christmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth our Lord of Mercy. It is also a time of reflection and a magical time for children and families. This year, the Divine Mercy Apostolate Archdiocese of Davao is launching the ‘My Gift of Mercy.’ It is the perfect gift that you can give to your friends and love ones. ‘My Gift of Mercy’ is an opportunity to invite family members and friends to encounter anew the merciful love of the Lord. Proceeds from the sales of this special gift item will help support the Apostolates in the corporal works of the Divine Mercy in different parishes,” revealed Joji Ilagan-Bian over merienda at Rekado with the attendance of tita Emilia Sitjar, Divine Mercy Treasurer/Cortess Printing Press proprietor Edna Ramirez, Emilia’s Jewellery’s Emil S. Sitjar,

Rekado/Patok sa Manok/Mr. & Mrs. B’s loving owner Lena Benedicto, and myself as invited guest. “This ‘Gift of Mercy’ is a limited edition Plate No. 006/750 Season 1 painting of the Davao-born artist, Manuel ‘Boy’ Montoya. This is his first issue in the collection produced on porcelain plates as commissioned by the Divine Mercy Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Davao. Montoya took a course in Art Studies at London’s International Correspondence School. Montoya’s artworks reflect influences from European Impressionism to Japanese Art Modern. Montoya’s Divine Mercy artwork of a harvest scene done in clear, bright colours will match any style of interior design,” assures tita Emilia S. Sitjar. The ‘Gift of Mercy’ comes in a special box ready for gift-giving. The ‘Gift of Mercy’ is available by order through Joji Ilagan Bian (c/o Abbie 09083349006) or Emila Sitjar (c/o Jojo 09355556360). The plot thickens AN ELDERLY Ampatuan farmer interviewed live at the roadside by a roving television crew was asked for his opinion on the ensuing political rivalry in his town and municipality. At the time, more than a year had already passed since the pre-election massacre of 58 people in the area had shocked the world. In this fateful feature-story interview, elections were again near. His curt replies I recall, although trite and plain, had for me, hinted at much deeper, if not sadder meaning. With a blank stare, he had answered that the topic of elections was way above his head and therefore beyond him. Then he added, elections were only the concern of the rich. Now, I’m pretty sure denials will go far and wide once anyone would dare apply this particular mindset and equate it with the majority of us constituents who insistently believe ourselves to be totally woke. After all, isn’t it already true that the internet is filled with critical analysts? Someone whom I’ve talked to about this recently, even innocently blurted, “...but that had been a farmer talking...” implying that the man’s outlook wasn’t representative of the whole. If that were the case, then the divide insinuated by the farmer therefore exists and there, I rest my case. It is just so hard to think sometimes, especially come election time, is it really true that the divide between rich and poor, politicians and electorate becomes palpable enough to touch? For one, why is vote-buying still Correspondents:

rampant in our society? As they say, on a clear day, you can see forever. Then perhaps, we might have failed to see it but, as articulated by that “farmer talking”, the clear division between classes had shone brightly as the sun, along the Ampatuan town dirt road on that day, many years ago. And then here comes Shakespeare when said “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players...” Conjure what you will, but with this election fever heating up, the alreadydizzying number of crossovers and behind the back-dribble strategies shot forth by all the aspiring camps left and right, have continued to bedazzle us no end. Are we being played? They entertain us and I am sure that even beyond the November 15 date (when all candidature entries are finalized), they will only come up with more hoopla, adding pizzazz to this electoral ‘exercise’ that we have here in the country. Just today, a dear OZ friend had posted on her page, “The world is changed by your example, and not by your opinion.” While I know the context she refers to, I am more inclined to have a teeny-weeny bit of reservation when it comes to the chances of a united front at a round against the privileged few. RANDOM THOUGHTS

To improve the standard of our Public Schools, we must provide our public BY CHITO R. GAVINO III school teachers the “help they need and want!” Per Landgraf, “teachers need and want to do their jobs well. Good training in college is important but not enough, and many teachers are long removed from a university setting. Teachers want the kind of professional development that will give them the knowledge and skills to help their students meet those new academic standards. They want good diagnostic information that allows them to be better at adjusting their teaching for individual students. Good professional development is an investment worth making, and one we need to make if we are to realize our goal of providing a high quality education – to all students.” Landgraf was talking here about American teachers. Surely, the “need and want” of teachers in developing countries in this regard is far worse. Investment in professional development of our public school teachers must be given higher priority by our government than some infrastructure projects. You don't need financial experts to fully understand this matter that matters most. Per Einstein, not to know this is insanity! Landgraft`s final words on the subject: “Providing high quality professional development for teachers, adequately funded and well managed, is absolutely required to reach the (Equity) goals we all share.” Admittedly, we in the Philippines need more than this to raise the quality of our public schools. In my previous article titled “Invest More Health and Education”, I wrote: “In our Education Program, we like to see higher salaries for teachers, development training for teachers, more classrooms… The incoming administration, hopefully will adopt “Education, Education, Education” as its new mantra. After massive infrastructure development, massive Total Integral Human Development must now be the national priority. It is about time to focus now on equity. Thus growth with equity will be appropriately referred to as “K to 12” education. Equity should be a major development goal of all our various institutions, most especially our government. All our development projects and programs must be strictly evaluated on how these will benefit our poor people… Undoubtedly .. The Education Program will directly impact positively on the lives of our common Filipinos. Two great challenges to our Education Program are: 1) The pandemic COVID-19 phenomenon, and 2) The Forthcoming 4th Industrial Revolution. It is humbly suggested that our Department of Education and CHED form a study group to draft a “Roadmap for future. Capacity- building for a digital world is, no doubt, imperative to effectively respond to the future demands. My family is a family of teachers. All members of my family are teachers. I dare say that teaching is the greatest profession of all. Bear in mind that our Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest Teacher of all. All parents must be the first teachers of their children. Hence teacher education and development should be top in the list of our government services. Sad to say, it is not the case now. Paging Congress on this nagging issue. “Huwag na kayong magtulugtulogan sa bagay na ito!” A Teacher`s Prayer Generous and everlasting God, You have entrusted me with this great responsibility of making not just the (

Southern Leyte for Green! IN times of elections, colors become the candidates' form of protest and messaging. It has become a political tradition for candidates and their respective parties to pick colors that would best represent their advocacy. In recent memory, yellow has been the ruling political color. But the color's spark is now dead---now extinguished because of carriers' inaction, which brought the color's promise of reforms unfulfilled. VP Leni, LP's standard bearer for the 2022 presidential election, implicitly rebranded the party's color from yellow to pink. Who wants not to abandon the former color's troubled past? Pink is the new color of redemption, at least according to supporters. Recently, a caravan in support of Leni's bid was organized in Sogod. It was not well attended, a proof that the opposition's charm and melodramatic spiels would not work in the

FROM THE MAIL BY JERIC OLAY province. Will the color pink be accepted in Southern Leyte? Definitely not. Truth to tell, the Mercados are the most influential in Southern Leyte. Almost in all local posts, the Mercados have secured their seats. There are many reasons why the Mercados won't campaign the color yellow (now pink), not least of which is the inclusion of Oging Mercado in Duterte's cabinet. When it comes to infrastructure, Southern Leyte has since savored Duterte's Build Build, Build. The administration, including Duterte's main ally in

the Senate, has constantly provided amelioration programs for Southern Leyteño. Not so long ago, in 2016 national elections, the Mercados had fluctuating patterns of support. This time, they would support Duterte's bet or his party's. Long before the filing of COC, Ituloy ang Pagbabago Movement (IPM) was launched in Maasin City; part of the crowd were top officials in the province. In a move to ensure continuity, individuals behind IPM have placed their faith in Sara's prowess. As of this writing, Digong's daughter hasn't made her decision on substitution—we cannot tell until November 15. In the 2022 elections, Sara— if she runs for the highest seat— would definitely emerge the winner in our province.

Greatness of Spirit in Mindanao QUEZON CITY (MindaNews) — The Ramon Magsaysay Awards, known as the Nobel Prize of Asia, has recognized 340 meritorious individuals and organizations over the last 60 years. Some are global icons (the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, the late former President Corazon C. Aquino) but many, at the time they were honored, were little known outside their communities (Chinese environmentalist Fu Qiping, Thai farmer Prayong Ronnarong, Indonesian labor activist Dita Indah Sari). The Trustees look for “greatness of spirit” – the spark exemplified by the selfless leadership of the late President Ramon Magsaysay. Known as “the man of the masses,” Magsaysay was a simple, humble man who commanded the admiration, respect and affection of people because he cared for all and believed in the dignity and importance of each individual, poor or rich, powerful or marginalized. This year, two Mindanao-based leaders were selected for this most prestigious award. Roberto “Ka Dodoy” Ballon from Zamboanga Sibugay, with 30 other fishermen, started the Kapunungan sa Gamay ng Mangingisda sa Concepcion (KGMC) in 1986 in a highly successful mangrove reforestation initiative which increased their catch as well as protect their environment. SHE TALKS PEACE: BY AMINA RASUL disasters. My co-host Dina Zaman (co-founder of IMAN Research, Kuala Lumpur) and I were quite excited to catch up with Steve, who shared his experiences and thoughts on “She Talks Peace.” We had an animated conversation about the peace process, Afghanistan, the fight against discrimination, including the movement to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community, the state of democracy – particularly in the US, with Trump in control of the Republican Party. And why, in the early days, he ate only Chippies for lunch. Dina was very curious why he came to the Philippines and stayed. Steve recounted how he wanted to help the Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who were given sanctuary in Bataan by the Philippines. He never left, challenged by the dire need of victims of calamities, manmade and natural. After working with the refugees in Bataan, he realized how ill-equipped aid workers were in dealing with the trauma experienced by the displaced. He and his friends thus started CFSI.

Steve was troubled by armed conflicts in Mindanao, expanding CFSI’s work to help the IDPs. CFSI has since become a major source of support for IDPs all over Mindanao, also helping train peacebuilders at the community level. He had also extended humanitarian aid in Afghanistan years ago. Of the Taliban, he shared our concern that they may not honor their commitments to the peace agreement, that the situation – particularly of women and girls – will worsen. In any area of conflict, he believes it is essential for civil society actors to be involved, based on his experience in Mindanao. Will this happen in Afghanistan as it has in the Philippines, I wonder … Steve, however, is optimistic. He has high hopes for the future, with young people who are so comfortable with the digital world, who may bridge one side with another. He believes we are all part of the same family – humanity. Some may be uncomfortable with that and against the unity of the community. But we have to try. “Sitting back and doing nothing is not an option,” he stressed. Help me to remember this when I am tired of writing my lesson plans, preparing my visual materials, thinking of my teaching strategy and following up my students behavior and performance. Help me to be patient. Keep me always healthy and calm and may I never get annoyed with students who need special attention in class or who do not seem to be interested in my lesson. Grant me the wisdom to learn new ideas, methods and techniques to make my lessons more fruitful and meaningful. May I be a faithful and loving instrument in the building up of your kingdom on earth as I try to follow the example of your Son Jesus Christ, the greatest Teacher. Amen (Trinidad D. Molina.)

egory for this year's Philippine Heritage Awards. The Kagikan Project focuses on tracing the roots and history of Tagum City. In its published book, it contains the etymology of Tagum City, its territorial limits, the prehistoric situation of the area during the Spanish, Ameican, and Japanese invasions, the tribes that first settled in the city, and the leaders who strived to form their first government. In a posted article of NCCA, the panel recommended the Tagum Local Government's Kagikan Project for its commitment and effort in bringing together, sharing, and discussing diverse entities' understanding of Tagum's his-

tory and culture through research. As a result of the years-long historical research and inquiry of the Kagikan Project, the Tagum City Historical and Cultural Center rose in Tagum City’s former city hall. The Philippine Heritage Awards is a conservation recognition program in which the President of the Philippines, on the nomination of the NCCA, bestows monetary prizes, awards, and citations for notable accomplishments and contributions. Section 37 of the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, or Republic Act No. 10066, governs the prizes. (PIA XI Davao del Norte/jmda/Ezri M. Coda, Jr. with reports from CIO Tagum City)

The mayor vowed to facilitate the three former rebels' reintegration into mainstream society. Araña said he is also currently coordinating with officials of the Bangsamoro Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to provide livelihood assistance to former Moro combatants like BIFF members who have opted to surrender peacefully. This consultation, on top of the city's public vaccination, mobile vaccination, door-to-door vaccination, and drive-thru vaccination, is a move to reach target population protection by the end of the month The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has reminded the chief executives to fasttrack the vaccination drive to reach 16,695 vaccinations per day. She said that the city right now is catering to 10,000-12,000 vaccinations per day.

The city, as of the latest data, has vaccinated 909,49 individuals for the first dose, which is equivalent to 69.94 percent of the target population for herd immunity, and 836,122 individuals administered with the second dose, which is equivalent to 64.32 percent of the target population for herd immunity. The city aims to inoculate 1,299,895 or 70 percent of the population by the end of the month. The mayor attributed the low number of cases as well as the zero critical and high-risk barangays for the week, to the massive vaccination rollout of the city.

track, increasing its value by 6.7 percent," Dar said. "Further, our broiler raisers and chicken and duck egg producers are taking the cudgel, as the value of poultry production grew by 1.3 percent, while chicken and duck egg output increased by 8.1 percent and 7 percent, respectively, based on PSA estimates," he added. On the other hand, the livestock subsector posted a -15.2 percent decrease in value of production, weighed down by the hog industry's 17.8-percent negative performance due to the

continuing scourge of the African swine fever (ASF) pandemic. The PSA report further said that palay production for the first nine months of the year is expected to reach 12.53 million metric tons (MMT), combining the first semester output of 8.8 MMT and projected third-quarter harvest of 3.73 MMT, based on standing crops in August. Said projected harvest for the third quarter is 5 percent more than the palay output of 11.9 MMT for the same period last year. Meanwhile, increasing the

country's corn production continues to be a big challenge, Dar said, as the projected 6.28-MMT harvest for the nine-month period this year, combining the actual first semester harvest and estimated yield in the third quarter, is three percent less than the same period in 2020 at 6.47 MMT. He said the government will “work harder” to help the sector achieve growth in output in the fourth quarter of the year. "We will continue to do much more during the last quarter of the year,” he added. (PNA)

MARY ANN KIMPO... was born in the USA. She is very interested in Middle Eastern history and culture and she thought of bringing Arabia and Egypt to her residence here in Davao city, as her gift to her mom. The Arabian Room, conceptualized by Tammy, also includes Egyptian items, as she confesses to a fascination with Egyptian history and tourism. She says, “Egypt is the film and arts and culture hub of the Middle East and they have opera and theater and big cinema industry. They are

the entertainers of the Arab world.” When we asked Mary Ann what her wishes on her 70th birthday were, she answered “Good health for everyone, peace, and always to remember God is here with us guiding us to do His will.” Among the interesting items displayed during our visit to the Arabian room which was arranged by Tammy, assisted by Sarah Sendiong, were Egyptian and Arabian outfits, headgear for the Bedouin men

and women, Sisha (hubbly bubbly) coffee, and special cups, and lots more! A dressing room was provided in case we wanted to try on the outfits! A birthday cake was the centerpiece of the display, baked by an engineer, Rosyl Lopez who had been to Saudi Arabia and owns a place here in Davao, Ciao Dulce. There were bouquets of fresh flowers and big balloons to complete the setup. Because of the pandemic, there was no party,

nor guests, only the immediate family, Tammy, Maryam, Ali, Johann, and Tammy’s daughter, Tara Francesca, unlike the celebration two years ago when guests enjoyed the “mini piano concert”, karaoke singing, and a sumptuous

dinner. Mary Ann’s siblings are Thelma, Ramon Jr. (Jun), Barbara, Amelita (Letlet), Johnny and Philip. Her parents were Judge Ramon Escalona Kimpo and Edna Elsie Gonzales Tirol. And because beauti-

ful memories of the past come alive in this Arabian Room, it will stay as long as the family wants to see it and will be ready to invite friends as soon as there is no longer any threat brought about by the pandemic.

Mary Ann worked in Saudi Arabia as a medical laboratory specialist for thirty years after working for three years in the Philippine Heart Center for Asia and three years in Permian General Hospital in Texas, USA. She raised her two children, Thamara and Tariq (Tammy and Ricky) while she was in Saudi Arabia. “Ali and I have two grandchildren and another on the way,” which she considers “a blessing in our old age.” Mary Ann’s daughter, Tammy, is half-Arab, but she (
