Forgotten Filipino kingdom is given billions by European judgment

According to the claimants' lawyers, a man actually visited their London office while holding business cards that falsely identified him as the prime minister of Sulu. There is no such job opening at the moment. It's not like anybody would notice

In Malaysia, where an election is anticipated to be held soon, the revelation has caused fury.

The lawsuit focuses around a deal established in 1878 in which Sulu agreed to let the British North Borneo Company, a colonial business, exploit its slice of Borneo in exchange for a yearly fee. The Sultanate would "cede" the territory under the terms of the English version of the contract. The original only makes a leasing commitment.Malaysia inherited Sabah and its associated debts when it gained independence from Britain in 1963, and for 50 years it sent 5,300 ringgit ($1,200) annually to the sultan's legitimateAccordingheirs. to Elisabeth Mason, an attorney for the claimants, this sets Sabah apart from other land grabs during the 19th century. It's a rare, possibly unique instance of a colonial contract that continues unbroken into the current era, she claims. After a relative claimed to be the rightful sultan of Sulu and led a tragicomic invasion of Sabah in which 60 people lost their lives, Malaysia stopped making payments to the heirs in 2013. The heirs threatened legal action, claiming breach of contract. After ignoring them for two years, Malaysia decided to skip out on hearings in Europe, giving the claimants' attorneys free rein to make their case. The international arbitration agreement to which Malaysia is a party means that it will likely have to accept the outcome of any case brought beforeTheit. court decided that the heirs were entitled to 15% of all profits made from fossil fuels and palm oil since 2013, as well as all profits expected to be made in the future. Many Malay people are outraged that a European lawyer - and not a judge - may spend billions of dollars without consequences. The damage to national pride is even greater. The sovereignty of Malaysia's second-largest state has always been qualified, but few Malays were aware of this fact. All parties' politicians are scrambling to shift the blame for a case that has been botched by four prime ministers in a row. The people of Sabahan are confused as to why a dispute over the name of their state, the poorest in Malaysia, would result in monetary gain for the otherAllstates.throughout the world, people are up in arms at the possibility of $15 billion suddenly appearing. Each of the eight claimants has been told to relocate and avoid any contact with the outside world.Roughly twenty other claimants to the throne are either trying to curry favor with the legitimate heirs or are posing as the case's real winners in the local press.

Marcos addresses sugar shortage where he raised the need to assess how the government can increase the supply of quality sugar for food manufacturing to protect local jobs. “It has become a worrisome problem. We are doing all of these things to protect the jobs of workers in those industries. So we are studying several measures that we can take to immediately increase the supply of sugar in the country,” he said. Marcos said the government is also working on sugar prices and is in talks with traders for them to bring down the prices of the commodity. “Hopefully, we can get some concessions with the traders so that at least the pricing will be reasonable. The concern is the supply right now. I’ll make sure that there is sufficient supply in the country so that you can operate at full capacity,” he said.Another area that has to be looked into is direct importation by food manufacturers with the approval of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) as part of emergency measures to address current industryMarcosconcerns.said although there is a need for the country to increase sugar production in the future, the current pressing concerns of food producers must be addressed. But industry players said if the government were to consider importation for industrial use, it must act now to secure supply from global sugar exporters since they may allocate their produce to other markets.

Continued from page 1Continued from page 1

The President earlier recognized that there might be a need to import sugar to stabilize domestic prices of the commodity. Marcos previously said that he would reorganize the SRA in an effort to find ways to address issues plaguing the sugar industry. “We’ll reorganize the SRA and then we will come to an arrangement with the industrial consumers, with the planters, the millers, suppliers of the sugar to coordinate para talaga kung ano ‘yung mayroon, kung ano ‘yung available, mailabas na sa merkado,” he said.He also pointed out that there is a need to immediately address the problems hounding the industry to avert a looming sugar shortage, which may affect local sugar workers and their families. “Because right now, they are starting to cut down the days of the week na nagtatrabaho and we are very worried of course about jobs. So ‘yun ang iniintindi ko talaga right now,” he said. The sugar situation is similar to other agricultural commodities in the country, according to Marcos who said the government is being compelled to import to replenish local requirements when there is shortage in production.

“To cut production costs, the government extends subsidies and fertilizer to farmers,” he emphasized. Marcos earlier ordered an investigation into a failed attempt to import some 300,000 tons of sugar, according to Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, saying the Sugar Order No. 4 issued by the SRA, which supposedly directs the importation of sugar, is allegedly“Theillegal.Chairman of the Sugar Regulatory Board is President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. As such, the chairman sets the date of any meetings or convening of the Sugar Regulatory Board and its agenda. No such meeting was authorized by the President or such a resolution likewise, was not authorized,” Angeles bared, adding the resolution appears to have been signed by Agriculture Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian on behalf of Marcos.Angeles said Sebastian was not authorized to sign on behalf of Marcos. “He (Sebastian) was not authorized to sign such a resolution because the President did not authorize the importation,” Angeles said, adding importations are a sensitive matter, particularly concerning agricultural“Sugarimports.isone such importation which we take great care with. It is a balancing act. The importation has to be carefully studied to protect both the consumer against the rising prices of basic commodities while ensuring at the same time that we do not destroy the local industry,” Angeles Sebastiansaid.eventually resigned from his post shortly after Marcos ordered the probe. But now, Marcos has approved the importation of some 150 tons of sugar. (Mindanao Examiner)

The DOH previously reported two recent cases of Monkeypox - both Filipinos - who had travelled to countries with documented cases of the disease. The duo, whose ages are 34 and 29, are also in isolation.Itsaid case investigation and contact tracing is ongoing for both cases. They are also being cared for and are under strict isolation. Note that the two new cases are not related to each other, or to the first case. The first case has already recovered and been discharged from isolation as of August 6. Monkeypox spreads mostly by skin-to-skin contact with those who have rashes or open lesions. It is not like COVID-19 that spreads mostly through the air. Investigation of recent Monkeypox cases in non-endemic countries indicates potential transmission through sexual contact. Monkeypox symptoms are mild, and the disease is rarely fatal. “Everyone can help prevent the spread of Monkeypox. Avoid close skin-to-skin contact with suspected cases, especially those with rashes or open wounds. Keep hands clean. Wear a face mask. Cover coughs using the elbow, and choose areas with good airflow,” the DOH said, adding that anyone may get Monkeypox. “If you have a travel history to countries with Monkeypox, and then have symptoms like fever, lymphadenopathy or “kulani”, and rashes, seek immediate medical attention. This will help hasten recovery.” (Mindanao Examiner)

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Rhodora Ventolero, a hardworking mother of five, patiently sews her daughter's school uniform, skipping her lunch break to finish a pair of long pants. The 49-year-old works at Sky Gym at LM Metro Hotel and says the family cannot even afford a tailor. Earning a little over P300 a day, Rhodora says it is not enough to feed five children — all of them students and the youngest only 12 years old. Rhodora says her husband, a pedicab driver, is also struggling to earn a living. "It is really hard, difficult I say, that's life — a poor family trying to survive on a daily basis," she says as she continues sewing the green-colored pants of her 18-year-old daughter — the third child, now a senior high schooler.Thewoman also sells peanuts packed in small cellophane, and occasionally, if she has extra pesos, which by the way is very seldom, and a few bottles of homemade peanut butter as her sideline during breaks to earn little. Manang, as she is fondly called by other employees and customers, has to travel at least 25 kilometers every day to go to work. The money spent on fares is a treasure already for Rhodora, enough to buy a kilo of rice for a Nevertheless, day. Rhodora is grateful: "Life is hard indeed, but despite all of this, we are a happy family. We pray together and thank God for everything we have."Rhodora, described by her co-workers as honest and trustworthy, says she wants her children to finish school no matter what. "I pray the government give us scholarship grant so my children can finish school, and that's what I always pray to God," the bespectacled woman says and then continued on sewing the pants by hands, and paused briefly to say: "I don't have any training on dressmaking, I just make my pattern directly to the textile, mark them with my crayons and that's it."

Manalo said the briefing was part of the government’s long-standing tradition of open dialogue and constructive engagement with the international community on human rights. Continued from page 1 Sciences have reported a new subspecies of Begonia in Mount Timolan Protected Landscape in Zamboanga del Sur province.Begonia is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Begoniaceae. The genus contains more than 2,000 different plant species. The Begonias are native to moist subtropical and tropical climates. Some species are commonly grown indoors as ornamental houseplants in cooler climates. In cooler climates some species are cultivated outside in summertime for their bright colorful flowers, which have sepals but no petals. In ongoing taxonomic studies of the genus Begonia, the researchers and their collaborators collected a population of peculiar Begonia section Petermannia species, according to a report by Phys.org. The report, attributed to Zhang Nannan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said after meticulously examining its morphology and comparing it with protologues and available digitized type specimens from across the Philippines and neighboring countries, the researchers confirmed it as a subspecies of Begonia bangsamoro that is new to science. The new subspecies was named as Begonia bangsamoro subp. Bagasa and published in Phytotaxa. It is the 17th representative of the genus Begonia for Zamboanga Peninsula.Thenew subspecies is a terrestrial, monoecious, perennial herb, up to 30 cm long. It differs from Begonia bangsamoro subspecies bangsamoro in having staminate and pistillate flowers with much narrower and elongate tepals. The new subspecies is endemic to the Zamboanga Peninsula. It was found in deeply shaded lower montane forest with damp soil growing along the trail with an elevation of 700–900 m a.s.l. It was also found growing as a terrestrial, lithophyte and as a climber on tree ferns. The conservation status of the new subspecies is proposed as “least concern” following the International Union for Conservation of Nature Standards.TheMount Timolan Protected Landscape is a protected area covering Mount Timolan and its surrounding forested landscape. The park encompasses an area of 1,994.79 hectares (4,929.2 acres) and a buffer zone of 695.39 hectares (1,718.3 acres) in the municipalities of San Miguel, Guipos and ItTigbao.wasestablished on August 14, 2000 through Proclamation Order No. 354 issued by then President Joseph Estrada. The park was also earlier established by the provincial government of Zamboanga del Sur as a provincial park and wildlife sanctuary known as the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Park through Provincial Ordinance No. 3 in 1992. The presence of various microhabitats is reflected in the diversity of flora and fauna found there. However, limited information is available and biodiversity studies are scarce up until now. The Next Small Step by Fr. Roy Cimagala (Cebu) WE cannot overemphasize the importance of this concern. We have to do our best to see to it that we always have purity of intention in everything that we do, so that we only love and serve God, and because of that, we can properly love and serve everybody else. This concern was somehow referred to in that gospel episode where Christ lamented over the hypocrisy and inconsistency of the leading Jews at that time. (cfr. Mt 23,13-22) “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the Kingdom of heaven before men. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter,” he said. When our intentions are not pure, when they are contaminated with ulterior motives, there is no way but for us to fall into some form of inconsistencies and improper priorities. We should be very careful with our intentions. Since they are hidden, we can easily play around with them. We can appear good outside but bad inside. Our deeds may be considered as acts of generosity and compassion, but the intentions may be those of envy, conceit and the like. In determining the morality of our human acts, intention plays a very crucial role. Together with the matter or object, and the circumstances surrounding our acts, our intention can determine whether they are good or bad. With our intention, we can direct our acts to God, following what was once indicated by St. Paul, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor 10,31) That’s how our acts become good, or moral. Otherwise, they are bad, or at least dangerous. This is so, since God, being the Creator, is the standard for everything. And more than the standard, he is, in fact, the very substance of what is good, true and beautiful, what is fair and just, what is perfection Nothingitself. is good, true and beautiful, nothing is fair and just, nothing is perfect if it is not done with God and for God. In short, we need to refer all our acts to God. We have to make this affirmation very clear in our mind and do everything to make that ideal a reality. We have to be most careful in handling our intentions. They play a strategic role in our life, for how and where we direct them would determine whether we want to be with God and simply with our own selves. Our intentions express who and where in the end we want to be. Do we choose God, or do we simply choose ourselves, or the world in general? It’s actually a choice between good and evil. Even if we are not aware, or refuse to be aware, of this choice, which is usually the case, the choice between God and us, between good and evil is always made with every human act we do. For us to have purity of intention, we should be humble enough to ask for it from God first. We should not dare to think that we can have purity of intention by simply relying on our own efforts. We need God’s grace first of all. Our usual problem is that we think we can have purity of intention by our own efforts alone. (FRC)

GOD PAYS attention to small things. We should too. When Christ did a miracle of multiplying the loaves and fishes to feed five thousand people, he instructed his disciples to gather the left-over food. “When they all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.’ So, they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.” (John 6:12-13) In fact, God rewards generously those who take care of the little things, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much: enter into the joy of your master.” (MatthewMany25:23)people are not moving with God today simply because they were not willing to take the small steps He placed before them. Let’s look at the number of young people who have finished college in the Philippines for example. Statistics show that out of 100 who enter elementary education in both public and private schools in the Philippines only 14 would graduate with college degrees. What happened to the rest? Is it because of financial constraints? Public education in the Philippines is almost free. I think it’s more of an effort problem rather than a monetary one. If you have received an invitation to get into a particular area of expertise, you should leap at the opportunity—no matter how small. Successful people are those that grab the opportunity that comes to them and never let it go until it bears fruit and even make it grow further. Regina Brett, the author of the best-selling book, “God Never Blinks” says, “Usually we know the next step to take but it’s so small we don’t see it because our vision is focused too far ahead, and all we can see is a scary leap of a small, simple step. So, we wait. And wait. And wait, as if the Master Plan will be revealed in a massive blueprint rolled out like a red carpet at our feet. When in doubt, do the next right thing.” When life stares at you and asks you, “What are you going to do with your life?” The answer is do the next right thing and the next. And before you know it, the series of “doing the next right things” would have transformed your life. For those who have stopped schooling for many years and are having second thoughts of going back to school to finish a degree because they are too old or have forgotten what they’ve learned long ago, should learn from the example of Jesus Tiwan who went back to school to take up a college degree at the age of 38 in Talisay City College. Mang Tiwan never gave up on his dream of finishing a degree and graduated last August at the age of 42 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Nobody is too old to learn, and nobody is too old to finish a degree. Our bodies might become weak when we age, but our thinking abilities can remain sharp when we decide to use the gray matter inside our head to embark on a life of learning. It’s just a matter of doing the next right thing. (ECC)
