Tejaswini Pandit,

an actress who is known to shoulder an entire movie’s fate, has garnered both audience and critical acclaim. In our Cover Story, the lovely lass comes across as real as her performances. Not one to live in a fantasy world, she is as grounded as anybody could be. By far, we believe, that is one reason why she still is the reigning queen of Marathi cinema. Having gained sincere regard and recognition in all visual mediums, Pandit isn’t complacent or comfortable in her position; she wants to improvise more, learn more and perform more. Citadel has brought to her admirers an exclusive, where she talks about her journey, trials, success and the transitory nature of fame. A Cover Story, worth a read for sure! While on the topic of trials and success, Rashmi Joshi, a rst-time author, speaks of her book, Here n Beyond. With a subject that transcends human intellect and acquaints readers with the idea of true spirituality, it is a book that is totally unputdownable! In our Literati column in conversation with the author, we’ve explored the idea of ‘beyond’. Speaking of transcending things, music and dance denitely helps one rise above any given situation. This month, our Culture column gives you an extensive coverage of the Sindhu Mahotsav that has certainly managed to rekindle the love for classical dance. With worthy reads as these, we have also managed to put in a few laughs! Take a read at this month’s Puneites Speak, where Punekars have managed to list out a few April Fool’s antics. You could denitely give a try to few! Likewise, our Interiors column features Fern Residency located at MIDC. The design, concept and execution of the property are of utmost class! Surely, post our Personality shoot that we held there last month, we had to feature it in our Interiors column! Take a look to know what we mean! As for the rest of the issue, it packed with page-turners and regulars suited both for a afternoon read or for quick sift through! Hoping you readers like this edition. Feedback is always welcome! Until next month… Happy Reading…

Living A Dignified Life Mubashsharaha Khan, one of the vital members of the LPF family, has come out a winner fighting all odds. In an exclusive chat with Citadel, she speaks about her success story which she owes it to the Lila Poonawalla Foundation. Read on... Excerpts from the interview: Tell us a little about yourself… Born and brought up in Pune, I completed my post graduation in the eld of Computer Science from the reputed Pune University. Under the patronage of the Lila Poonawalla Foundation, I could pursue my Masters that helped me to secure a jobs in some of the leading IT companies. As for my personal life, I am happily married having two kids, who are 8 and 6 years old respectively. At what age did you become a part of the LPF family? After completing my graduation, I was keen on pursuing further studies that’s where the LPF family came into the picture. My grandfather who was a retired government officer , freelancer who was a well read person told me about the scholarship. thereby raising my hopes two-fold of pursuing Masters. After thorough assessment of my academic performance by the Lila Poonawalla Foundation, I was awarded the scholarship in 2003 to pursue my post-graduation. How did it change your life? Becoming a part of the LPF family was no less than a blessing. It has brought a tremendous change in me as a person. My overall outlook towards life has changed after joining the LPF family. Before receiving the scholarship from the Lila Poonawalla Foundation, I used to think that scholarships are mere monetary support given to students, but after

receiving LPF scholarship, my perception about the concept of scholarship has changed to a great extent. Tell us all about the time when the Lila foundation transformed your life... (life before and after) Thankfully, my perception and attitude towards life changed after joining the LPF family. After attending sessions conducted by Lila Mom, I was inspired by her positive thoughts and her infectious energy made me a condent woman.

How are you giving back to the Lila Foundation and the society? Honestly, I feel you can check with Lila Mom about my contribution as I think I am not doing much. Nevertheless, I have started engaging in the LPF activities like participating in the review and selection process of the new batches of under graduate scholarships. In addition, I have conducted a corporate workshop along with other girls of the ‘LIA” ‘Leadership in Action group’ that helped the foundation to raise funds

of around ` 50,000. I know this is still very little to what Mom has done and has been doing for the society. Also, my husband Dr. Tanvir Khan, engages and gives his time and skills to the foundation. He conducts free dental check-up camps for all schools connected with the foundation. Besides, he treats the students with support from the foundation. I know this is still very little to what Mom has done and has been doing for the society. Currently, what are you pursuing? As regards my professional life, I am working as a Bid Manager in Tieto – a Nordic based IT Services Company. I have been working here since last 10 years, thereby performing different duties pertaining to the post of Team Leader, Project Manager, and Continuous Service Manager. Lastly, a few words on Mrs Lila Poonawalla... Lila Mom is my idol and a role model that I look upto. I consider myself fortunate enough to have 2 mothers. Both are equally strict, but even more caring. Lila Mom’s love for me is always seen in her eyes. Can you imagine she has never forgotten to wish me and send me greetings and gifts on my birthday since 2003? Sometimes even the people you are close forget our birthdays but Mom never forgets. Whenever I feel low in life, I think about her, her words and it keeps me going. I am blessed and honored to be associated with her.

MAILBAG we have hear, but also encouraged that we are giving support to such endeavours. I hope this becomes an annual event in fact. It gives life and colour to the city. Avni Doshi I have been following Ridhima Pathak’s career graph on the sports channels, and I am impressed by how far she has come in such a short time. That too, she is totally self-made. Kudos to her and hope many other women get and are able to make the most of such opportunities. Phillip Braganza Wow! The little girl Kavya Khemka had impressed me with her achievement at such a young age. It is great that parents and publishers nowadays are encouraging creativity and pushing children to reach their potential. Not like back in the old days when we were growing up and had to follow the fixed formula or school, college, marriage and sometimes job… Kavita Patel

For most of the time, I was just enjoying your pictures, but when I got around to reading her interview, I quite enjoyed that too. FLASHBACK

Seventy Stations to Supervise Pune’s Noise Pattern Q The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has roped in National Environmental Engineering Institute (NEERI) to undertake an expansive study to get the complete picture of noise pollution in urban areas across the state. “The institute will set up noise monitoring stations at more than 70 locations around Pune,” ofcials said. Further, they added, “It is the rst such study of this scale in the country.” According to the sources, Pune will have 70-80 noise pollution monitoring stations.

Rugby Girl from Pune Set to Join Army Q Annapurna Dattatraya Bothate’s long-standing dream to join the Indian Army has nally come true after she stood third in the all-India NCC merit list special entry (women). The 25-year-old is a national-level rugby player and has been playing the sport since 2010. Earlier, Bothate has represented the country at the Asian Games from 2010 to 2014. She has also been part of the Rugby World Cup qualiers team and was a silver medallist at the Kerala National Games in 2015. She joined the Ofcers Training Academy (OTA) Chennai on March 31 and her training started from the rst week of April.

NFAI Acquires Six Award-Winning Foreign Films Q The National Film Archive of India (NFAI), Pune, has added a number of foreign lms to its rich repertoire. The acquired titles are all internationally acclaimed, and have been honoured at the Cannes Film Festival, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Baftas and the Robert Awards (Danish equivalent of the Academy). A statement issued by the NFAI said that the titles included three lms from France (Lemming - 2005, Les Invasions Barbares - 2003 and The Beat That My Heart Skipped - 2005), one from Belgium (L’enfant 2005), a gripping political thriller from Denmark (Kongekabale - 2004) and one lm from Bosnia and Herzegovina (Gori Vatra - 2004). These six films were acquired from Mumbai resident Narayan Srinivasan.

D o c t o r s ’ M a s s L e ave A f f e c t s Medical Care Q Medical services at Sassoon General Hospital were hampered as 260 resident doctors went on mass leave last month to register their protest against the recent spate of attacks on resident doctors in areas such as Dhule, Aurangabad, Nashik and Sion.

The resident doctors, all postgraduate students of the BJ Medical College, stated in their individual leave applications that they cannot work under life-threatening conditions. Dean of Sassoon Hospital conducted a meeting with the heads of various departments and arranged a parallel medical workforce so that patient care remained unaffected throughout the day. However, patients and their relatives had a harrowing time getting the required care. As per the Bombay High Court order, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) cannot call for a strike, which is why the doctors have gone on leave instead. There is a general belief that the decision of the resident doctors to go on mass leave is the only way that they can register their protest.

Activists Against Cutting Six Trees on Aundh Road Q Tree activists have alleged that six trees along the Aundh Road have been damaged during the on-going road works on the stretch. While a few have lost their branches, the trunks of a couple of them have been badly chopped, risking their survival. Activists have taken up the matter with the Tree Authority of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the road and garden departments.

State Govt Budget Remains Silent on Purandar Airport Q The exclusion of the proposed new Pune airport from any budgetary allocation has come as a shocker to many, including aviation experts, triggering doubts on the state government’s seriousness about the project. The state budget proposed speedy development of smaller airports, though. The list includes Shirdi Airport. The state budget even mentioned about the steps being taken for upgrading Nagpur Airport to international standards, but there was not a word on the Purandar project. According to experts, it revealed the state government had not planned anything about the nances for the project or compensation.

Pimple Saudagar Society Uses Rainwater Har vesting to End Water Woes Q Summer brings water woes to many housing societies in Pimpri Chinchwad, making residents spend lakhs of rupees on tankers. One society in Pimple Saudagar has shown how such wasteful expenditure can be curbed. Roseland Residency implemented a rainwaterharvesting project on its premises and is now reaping the harvest of its foresight. The society is spread over 12 acres comprising 1,000 ats in 30 buildings.

THE DANCE WORKSHOP

SANKHYA DANCE COMPANY, IN ASSOCIATION WITH MUDRA CENTRE OF PERFORMING ARTS HAD ORGANISED A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP AS PART OF THE THIRD SINDHU MAHOTSAV DANCE FESTIVAL. JYOTSNA NARAYANAN, A BHARATNATYAM DANCER AND A YOGA TEACHER, WAS SEEN ADDRESSING THE AUDIENCE, THEREBY SHARING THE ANECDOTES OF DIVINE EXPERIENCES THAT CAN BE SOUGHT THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF ART. SPEAKING ON THE OCCASSION, JYOTSNA SAID, “AN ARTIST MUST UNDERSTAND THE LIFE THROUGH HIS ART. AS REGARDS YOGA, IT IS AN EXTENSION OF LIFE AND DANCERS MUST MAKE YOGA THEIR ‘LAKSHYA’. IT HELPS IN UNITING THE ESSENCE OF BODY, MIND AND CREATIVITY. THE YOGA PRACTICES WILL NOT ONLY ADD TO A DANCER’S PERSONA, BUT WILL ALSO HELP HIM OR HER TO GRASP THE DIVINE EXPERIENCE. THROUGH TAPAS, SADHANA AND SHRADDHA, ONE SHOULD BURN THEIR BODY TO REMOVE ALL THE UNWANTED THINGS AND IMPEDIMENTS THAT CLUTTER ONE’S PATH TO REACH THE ULTIMATE DIVINE POWER.” MOVING ON, LEELA VENKATRAMAN, A SCHOLAR, WRITER AND A RENOWNED DANCE CRITIC, WAS SEEN TALKING EXTENSIVELY ON THE TOPIC ‘TRADITION AND TRANSITION’ IN INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE. “TRADITION MEANS INHERITING CERTAIN LEGACIES FROM OUR PAST. WITH ALL THE TRANSITIONS THAT BHARATNATYAM HAS GONE THROUGH, MARGAM STILL REMAINS THE SAME AND IS EVEN MORE SIGNIFICANT IN TODAY’S WORLD, BECAUSE IT TELLS YOU TO BURN YOUR EGO AND KILL THE ‘I’ IN ‘YOU’,” MENTIONED LEELA. THE GUEST LECTURE WAS FOLLOWED BY A DEMONSTRATION BY VAIBHAV AREKAR AND HIS DISCIPLES. ALONG WITH HIS DISCIPLES, VAIBHAV EXHIBITED HIS SKILLS BY PERFORMING ON DANCE PIECES LIKE MALLARI, SHIVA, ABHANG RANG, THEREBY UNFOLDING HIS JOURNEY TO THE AUDIENCE USING THE MEDIUM OF DANCE.

To be precise, she presented her exclusive and nuanced work in Abhinaya traditions of Kathak through performances like Sundar Te Dhyan and Ashtapadi. Besides, she staged Varsha Ritu and Teen Taal, which were choreographed particularly for an extensive tour of Taiwan and Japan. Her disciples too, performed to their best potential. Besides, Sushant Jadhav, a renowned Kathak dancer, performed in one of the dance pieces choreographed by Uma Dogra. Staging the final performance of the festival, Vaibhav Arekar, Festival Director and a leading Male Soloist of India, performed a traditional solo Margam in Bharatnatyam, which was well-received by the audience in the auditorium that was packed to its capacity. Post the captivating performance of Vaibhav Arekar, the curtains were drawn, thereby concluding the two-day dance splendour.

Off late, Baner is coming up with many food joints and adding to this list is a different concept restaurant, GRILLICIOUS. This new quirky place is creating quite a buzz among the foodies in the city and curious as we are, it didn’t take long before we headed there ourselves to grill our taste buds with some unique flavours.

T

he restaurant business is no big deal in the fully equipped Pune city today, as all the required resources are readily available. But having worked in the mechanical eld for 35 years and then opening up a full-edged food joint is denitely one intrepid move. Yes, this is story of Ajit Goel’s baby, Grillicious. Goel has always been passionate about food and the cherry on the cake is his courteous wife, Swapna Goel, who is a food engineer herself and actively participates in the operations of the restaurant.

BY SAKINA GODHRAWALA sakina.citadel@gmail.com What’s more in the news is that they have come up with a unique DIY-BBQ party concept. We all love house parties, don’t we? It’s just the cooking, arranging and cleaning that we fuss about. Grillicious has a good deal for you. They provide BBQ set up at your home anywhere in Pune with pre-marinated skewers of tikkas of your choice and biryani too. All you have to do is grill, eat and burp!!! The rest will be taken care of by team Grillicious, and moreover it’s pretty reasonable too. Coming back to their restaurant in Baner, they have a huge outdoor space, which you can utilize if you’re

hanging out in large groups. They also have BBQ parties in-house, so you can get your squad along and enjoy the cooking and eating right there. The seating indoors is decently spaced and well decorated with quirky little utensils hanging on the walls and some recipes and ingredients scribbled over. We visited them on a weekday and must say, they are getting a good response as the place was all lled up and lively with happy customers enjoying their meal. When it comes to menu planning, this place gets a 10/10. I personally prefer a short and crisp menu rather than long repetitive

ones, and this one is perfect. They’ve put together their best and most unique recipes that include fusions and twists of tastes. We started off with the ‘Green Apple and Lime Glacier’. It is visually appealing and actually looks like a mountain made of ice. Unlike the usual ice gola, the ice here is so soft and tasty that I could have had two more. A highly recommended mocktail. The ‘Watermelon and Hazelnut Caprioska’ was pretty nice. Since I’m a paya lover, the ‘Paya Dhania Shorba’ soup was an obvious choice for me. The broth was served with papad and was avoursome. In the vegetarian options, we tried the ‘Smoked Mushroom Soup’ served with a piece of garlic toast, which I personally liked much more. The taste of the smoked mushrooms was quite evident and the consistency of the soup was great and the quantity was good too. Moving on to appetizers, we rst tried the ‘Sundried Tomato Italiano Chicken Tikka’. The chicken with a hint of Italian herbs and a briny avour of sundried tomatoes was good enough. Their ‘Masala Papad Platter’, which made waves across the internet, was next on out table and I was more than happy and intrigued to watch the mystery unfold. The make-your-ownpapad is a hit with kids and adults equally, with ve types of papads and six different toppings that included chutneys, sev, boondi, onion salad and an in-house masala mix. This kept us engrossed for long. Then came the party, the ‘American Smoked BBQ Wings’, which gave it the authentic BBQ sauce avour. Next on line was the much talked about dish, the ‘Butter Chicken Lasagna’. The butter chicken inside and its gravy

was delicious, char grilled chicken tikkas layered with cheese and lasagna sheets is Grillicious’s Indianised take on lasagna. In the mains, we tried the ‘Chatpata Murg Angara Masala’ with butter naan. The chicken pieces were succulent and a little smoked, the masala was of good texture and yummy enough to satisfy a strong Indian palate. Towards the end, the food was getting even more delectable. The ‘Chicken Kebab Pulao’ was one of my favourite dishes of the evening. Round and tasty chicken kebabs rested in rich avoured gravy, all on a bed of fragrant long pulao rice. The dish was put across beautifully. This one too is highly recommended. To end the feast, we gorged on the sinful ‘Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel Oreo Pie’, a layered dessert with an Oreo cookie base, topped with salted caramel and dark chocolate and garnished with Oreo cookie crumble actually lured us. It was heavenly and denitely satisfying. Before leaving, don’t forget to blow the happy horn. If you’re happy, let everyone hear it! To summarise, a great place for foodies to enjoy some innovative and scrumptious dishes in a friendly ambience without burning a hole in your pocket.

FOOLING AROUND!

Pranks have no age! Even so, although we grow older, we still love to pull somebody’s leg and share a laugh or two. Citadel brings to you some bamboozling tales of trickery... Let us know if any of them work for you this April Fool’s month! BY AAkAnkshA Chopde citadel@magnamags.com

Ashwin ChitAle Graphic Designer once, during a night-out, we had gone for a walk at the riverside near pune Municipal Corporation. At around 2-2:30 am, we decided to turn the night into a spookily memorable for one our friends. There was this abandoned bus there and three of us went to hide inside. We were giggling, no doubt, but silently. But, this friend of ours was two steps ahead of us. she tried calling us, knowing fully well about our plans. she didn’t get into the bus. so, after sometime, when our balloon of excitement burst, we began descending the bus. suddenly, in a very horrifying voice, we heard, “Kon aahe re?” (Who’s there?). We were lily-livered, more so when a dangerous looking beggar rose up from seat. We ran away from that site. This incident still leaves me in fits.

DivyA ChAnDel stuDent This is a prank my friend used to play frequently. he had a small box of Tic Tac. he had put some body lotion and colour into it. so whenever somebody was engrossed in a conversation with him, he used to act as if he is sneezing while throwing this ‘liquid stuff’ on him or her. The person in front used to be horrified and his/her expressions would be ‘pure gold’.

Anushree BoDhAle stuDent Pranks are an integral part of the lives of siblings. I remember one such prank, which backfired on me. Once, my empty mind came up with a devilish plan. My sister, who hates getting wet, was sleeping peacefully. What an opportunity! There I was, knowing fully well the repercussions, and yet planned the prank. I hid behind the bathroom door, armed with water balloons filled with ice-cold water. Then walked in my sister, half grumpy (mom had woken her up at 8am on a sunday morning). no sooner did she pick up her toothbrush, than I attacked her with water balloons. Before she could recover from that shock, I drenched her completely with more water and ran away. Later, I was threatened that I would be regretting my actions, and boy I did! While I was engrossed in watching a movie, she put my phone on silent mode and hid it. I combed my house high and low but in vain. After a couple of hours of begging and her enjoying my misery, she made a deal with me. If I told my mom that I was the one who broke her favourite compact powder, I’d get my phone back. I had to give up after some initial protests. Thankfully, my mom was not very mad, but I had to give up my movie time (which was a fair punishment according to my sister). And now, we were both in deep thought about our next iconic prank.

trishlA rAj stuDent The best part of the prank comes when the prankster himself/herself gets owned in his/her own prank. I clearly remember this. It was the first of April; many years ago my younger brother was then 12, and in a phase when kids think that they can outsmart the entire human race. his prank was sticking post-it notes on people’s back that read ‘I deserve a beating’, ‘A pig’s voice is like a song to me,’ etc. So when he went out to play, I hid his marker pen. When he came back home, he started looking for it but to no luck. I asked him to check in the dustbin, for the maid might have accidently thrown it away. he dug and dug in the dustbin filled to the rim, giving off odours only dustbins can. Taking all the insides out, he finally found a post-it note with ‘Marker Pen’ written on it. Now it was the older sibling’s time to shine. I checked his expressions, those of multiple shades of confusion and defeat, with utter satisfaction.

sAnikA PuntAmBekAr stuDent I vividly remember this yarn that happened a few years back. One of my friends received some vouchers, which offered some great discounts, from a newly opened restaurant in Koregaon Park. In our excitement about getting freebies, we all made plans to go to this place. It was far off from our houses. We convinced our parents and had our hopes very high. We couldn’t care less about the remoteness of this place. But after reaching the location mentioned on the voucher, we got the catch. There was no fancy eatery or anything even remotely related to it. There was just a little pasture of land, with some wild bushes. We were very disappointed, and realised the trap. The day was the first of April.

GAyAtri kolhe stuDent I had a close friend at Kolhapur who became the target of my evil plans. I had been to kolhapur once before and hence knew the locations and landmarks well, like the bus stops, the vada pav center, tea shops, etc. So I told him that I would be visiting his place along with my family. he was really pleased and even announced this to all his friends and acquaintances. My mom called him and told him the details too. so on the scheduled day, he called me at 4 in the morning, to know my whereabouts. I told him that we are at Satara. I, in fact, was in my bedroom. He had booked rooms for us. At 8 am, I called him and told that I am at the XYZ teashop and that the crowds were less today. When he called me that he’s at the shop, waiting for me, I made him realise what a fool he had been made. We both still crack up on this incident.

ritesh tiwAri actor Last year, an incident took place with me. My friend and I had gone for a film audition on March 31. The audition went as usual and we were told that they’d call us in a day or two. The next day, I fooled a lot of people while nobody could fool me. But the story did not continue to remain so. At around 2pm in the afternoon, I received a call. “Hello, I am Ritika, from XYZ production house. Is this Ritesh Tiwari on line?” “Yes”, I said. “Sir, you had auditioned for a role yesterday. You have been casted for it. Please come to the office at 5:30 for the agreement procedures.” I couldn’t believe my ears. I called my friend, but unfortunately, he wasn’t selected. Nevertheless, he was very happy for me and told me to give my best. The day after, I got ready at 5 pm, and while I was leaving for the office, I received a call from the same number. I got excited and on answering the call, I heard a roar of laughter from the other side. It was the same friend of mine. He shouted, ‘April Fool’. The lady from the production house was his elder sister in fact. After I got over the little disappointment, I too enjoyed a hearty laugh. But next time onwards, I started cross checking and confirming the calls.

Spirituality

This month, REV DADA JP VASWANI gives us his views on meditation, right parenting and the power of prayer‌ I know meditation is the true way to spiritual progress, but I cannot find a way to do it. My mind runs from pillar to post and I get frustrated. This makes me feel I have failed and I get angry. Is it better to stop meditating than feeling frustrated every time I try? It is true that meditation is a way to spiritual progress. But it is not the only way meditation. It is not meant for all. It can be practiced only after the mind has learnt the lesson of concentration. Without concentration, there can be no meditation. For most of us, Sri Chaitaniya Mahaprabhu indicated another way. It is the way of Kirtan. A few devotees of God get together and sing the Holy Name of God again and again. In due course, they lose their identification with the body and sink deeper within themselves. There are many other ways, too. One of them is to sit in silence and take up a name which is symbolic of God and keep on repeating it again and again; say the name Om or Ram or Shyam or Jesus or Satnam or Satkartar, etc... Keep on repeating the same name over and over again. This, too, will one day take you into the depths within. Who is Shiva meditating to if he himself is God? Is there a higher and even higher God still? Does it go on forever? There is the manifest God and there is the un-manifest God. The manifest God prays to the un-manifest God. Shiva is the manifest God. He meditates on the un-manifest. I was meditating on a regular basis for a couple of years. Then I got married and stopped. I want to get back to meditating, but I am not consistent. How do I get back on track? Success in meditation depends on regularity. If you wish to move on the path of meditation, you must sit in meditation preferably at the same time and the same place everyday. This will form a habit and the habit will become a focus. And if on a certain day you do not sit in silence, you will feel as though you have missed something. If my husband and I share different parenting styles in terms of values and principles, which is the best way to resolve the differences? Whatever they may be, there must be some points in common. Use these to come closer to each other and pass them on to your children. Both should be one. Do not emphasize differences, but stress on common points.

To discipline kids, how right or wrong it is if we spank them? Do not spank children. Give them so much love that when you turn your face away from them because they are not behaving, they will come and ask you why you have turned your face away from them. If you spank them, they will not be sensitive to what you wish to teach them. What is the way of loving God? What is a practical suggestion for loving God? Love all! God is in everyone! The person may be dishonest; he may be a cheat. Even then, send positive vibrations to all.
