Artistic Director Mark Clements A Note

Of all the things you can do in live theater, making a brand-new musical is probably the hardest of all. Between the book, the lyrics, the music, the choreography and the acting, there are a variety of elements that all need to be strong and work seamlessly together. It’s like the theatrical version of base jumping…you never know how great a thrill or risk it is until the parachute fully deploys! But when you’re able to get it right, new musicals can become classics that will be performed and beloved for decades to come. Therefore, I am particularly grateful to our Presenting Sponsors, Jay Franke and David Herro who were so interested in us telling this particular story, encouraged us to produce it, and generously supported us in doing so. Without them, this project would not have been made possible.

The journey of Run Bambi Run from idea to stage began around 2012 when we commissioned Eric Simonson (whose play Lombardi had been produced here in 2011) to write a new piece for us. He was drawn to the Milwaukee-centric stranger-than-fiction, folk-law tale of Lawrencia “Bambi” Bembenek–ex-cop, former Playboy bunny and convicted murderer. But did she actually do it? Somehow, it was even a tale that I remember hearing about while living in England. I was keen to explore it onstage, but I thought it might be better as a contemporary musical. I then asked Eric, who seemed to agree with my analysis, if that was the case, then who might write the music? Without hesitation, he said “the Violent Femmes,” and I gleefully agreed with that idea. Eventually, and after a fairly circuitous journey, the Violent Femmes’ lead singer/songwriter and guitarist Gordon Gano joined the team. Fast-forward over ten years, five workshops, a global pandemic that stopped the play for several years, and countless drafts later– Run Bambi Run is finally taking the stage as Milwaukee Rep’s first World Premiere mainstage musical, and actually the last one on the mainstage as we know it before we build the new Ellen & Joe Checota Powerhouse at the end of this season. From the 1980s to today, the story of Lawrencia Bembenek has been an intriguing, frustrating and divisive one for many. For some it has been an unsolved tragedy, resulting in a painful lack of closure. Some people feel strongly that she was guilty; others feel she took the fall for someone else’s crime. Through years of research, and attempting to distill a decades-long saga into two hours (no easy feat), we have crafted a musical we hope will share the facts and the follies of this story with newcomers, and shed new light for locals who may have lived through this event first-hand. But even this musical can only capture so much of the complex web of deceit, lies, coverups and inconsistencies that make up this story. So often during the development process, when confronted with yet another outrageous fact, I would turn to my team and say, “You really can’t make this sh*t up!” Amidst all the craziness that defined the crime, the trial, and Laurie’s life, is a woman who, murderer or not, was a force to be reckoned with, who fought until the day she died for her truth. Regardless of whether you think Bambi was innocent or guilty, we hope that story resonates with you in some way.

A project of this size and scale could never have been accomplished without the support of a phenomenal crew, creative team - and of course a unicorn cast of twelve actor/musicians. Who not only are playing over 70 roles, but are along with our two stellar musicians, playing all the music in the show. I could not have asked for a better team to finally bring this story to life.

Some of you in the audience were Milwaukeeans in the 1980s, following the trial in real-time. Some of you are just hearing the name Lawrencia Bembenek for the first time. For everyone, we hope that this musical has you leaving the theater singing the ear-wormy songs and seeking some truth behind the tale, as so many of us have done for so many years.

As always, thank you for your support of new work!

Gordon Gano Music & Lyrics

With his band the Violent Femmes, Gordon Gano helped define post-punk’s nerdy cool face of the 1980s and ‘90s while also crafting himself into one of modern rock’s finest singer/songwriters. Gordon James Gano was born to a Baptist minister father and a musical mother, was one of eight children and spent his early childhood singing with his family. When Gano’s family moved to Milwaukee, during his sixth grade year, he started playing guitar and writing songs. Gano met Brian Ritchie while he was still in high school and along with Victor DeLorenzo they shaped the quirky, cool sounds of the Violent Femmes. The Violent Femmes’ self-titled debut album was the first album to achieve platinum status in America without ever making the charts. Songs like “Blister in the Sun,” “Add It Up,” and “Kiss Off” became cult classics. In 1986, Gano took some time off from the Violent Femmes and joined the gospel group the Mercy Seat, which followed into the next decade as well as musical scores and soundtrack cuts. In 2002, Gano returned with his first-ever solo album, Hitting the Ground. A second project, Under the Sun, with the Ryan Brothers appeared in 2009 from Yep Roc Records.
