New Age

9

A Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements It’s not very often that our audience members get the chance to see two plays by one playwright back-to-back in a single season. However, that’s exactly what’s happening in our Stiemke Studio as we open the World Premiere of New Age by Dael Orlandersmith after closing the World Premiere co-production of her co-written play, Antonio’s Song/I Was Dreaming of a Son. Shortly after we launched our John (Jack) D. Lewis New Play Development program in 2015, we were on the lookout for worldclass playwrights we could commission to write new plays for our theater. Dael was an obvious choice. We’d already produced her play Yellowman in the 2011/12 Season, and were preparing to produce the highly acclaimed Until the Flood in our 2017/18 Season. I reached out to Dael for new work and she gave me the unproduced Antonio’s Song to consider. Inspired by its lyricism and relevance, we began to develop that show, but still asked Dael if she’d be interested in writing something brand new, just for us. What came out of that conversation was New Age. Dael expressed she had a deep interest in the topic of women and aging. At the time, she was hitting an age milestone and while she was feeling good about it, she could see the way it was negatively affecting other women around her. She talked about how ageism hasn’t really been unpacked the same way sexism and racism have been in recent societal conversations—but there is substantial stigma and prejudice around age, especially for women, both young and old. So, she dove into exploring the topic and, in typical Dael fashion, the piece ended up deeply infused with music (in this case, some fantastic rock n’ roll with an electric guitarist playing onstage!) and reflections on all kinds of art—from Greek sculpture to Harlem renaissance literature to Hollywood feminine icons. The women in this play are all navigating their own unique histories and dreams, but over the course of the play they—and we—may come to identify with one another’s individual stories a bit more than first expected. While we didn’t intend to have a mini Dael Orlandersmith season in the Stiemke, we’re excited for the ways in which these two plays are in conversation with each other. With all of Dael’s work, we appreciate her exploration of art, gender, age, race, identity, legacy, community, and finding one’s own path in life. Though written separately—and not originally intended to be produced back-to-back—they speak to each other in beautiful, impactful ways. Whether you got to see one, both, or all of her work we’ve produced, we suspect you will feel these themes resonating deeply. New plays are vital to our theatrical ecosystem, and help keep the American Theater relevant, engaging, impactful, and exciting. Dael’s work has gone on to be produced in theaters across the world, and we hope that these two Milwaukee Rep World Premieres will continue to have robust and meaningful lives long after they leave the theater. Your support as audience members is crucial to this, and for that we thank you. Whatever your age—from young theater-goer to fifty-year Subscriber—may New Age remind you of the power of telling your own story and claiming your own path in life. Cheers,

The Lynden Sculpture Garden works with artists, educators, students, and our community to create, support, and share experiences at the intersection of art, nature, and culture.

Lynden operates as a laboratory, offering hands-on programs that integrate our collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures and temporary installations, and our community of artists, with the natural ecology of 40 acres of park, pond, and woodland.
