ey wing fans- are you looking to satisfy your tummy with some of the best wing samples that Milton can offer? The Milton Rotary Club is hosting their Wingfest on Friday July 17th, 5pm11pm and Saturday July 18th, 11am-11pm at Rotary Park where 8 Wingfest booths will be on location featuring a selection of delectable treats. Italian Canadian Club of Milton (ICCM) is participating as one of the Wingfest vendors. Angelo Posteraro (President of ICCM) knew that he had to bring out the big guns to wow wing connoisseurs, so he has called upon Justin Logar, Sous Chef at Pasqualino Fine Food Fine Wine in downtown Milton. Justin has specially prepared two exciting gourmet wing flavours that are sure to be a huge hit at the event. “Angelo from the Italian Club approached me and he asked me if we could submit two wing sauces for the Rotary Club Charity,” Justin said. A seasoned cook for over 6 years, Justin is still new to the Pasqualino team where he started as Sous Chef last November. He has concocted two new exciting flavours of wings for the event, an Italian Pesto style wing and a Canadian/French Italian wing that features a little pop.

“For the event we thought we’d go Italian, so we have a spicy pesto and we are also going to do a little Canadian French Italian style wing with a Maple Dijon vinaigrette just as a glaze,” Justin said. “In this sauce it’s a Maple Dijon sauce. It’s very simple like a vinaigrette, just maple syrup, Dijon mustard and a little herbs and spices.” The Milton Rotary Wingfest will take in the beautiful outdoor location of Rotary Park in Downtown Milton. This is a great event for the entire family which will include various vendors featuring their tasty chicken wings. On location there will be kid’s activities, live music and entertainment, a contest for vendors and a beer tent. This is an event for the wing lover in your family so see you there! Italia Fest

nearly doubles in attendance I

talia Fest was the place to be on June 7, where hundreds gathered outside La Rose Italian Bakery to enjoy great food and live music. The event featured an appearance by Milton resident Mario Carito, who dressed up as Super Mario. When asked where his brother Luigi was, Carito said “I’ve been getting that question my entire life.” He added: “Luigi actually had to go to work—he’s behind the sausage stand.”

A photogenic Ferrari was loaned to the festival to help entice festival goers to pose for a photo and to sign up to be a member of the Italian Canadian Club of Milton. When he spoke to the Villager, Angelo Posteraro, ICCM’s president, had already signed up 18 new members.

district chief of the Milton Fire Department, there was recognition of a desperate need for a local hospice.

The idea to open a hospice is a collaboration of the Smith and Townsend families. After the 2007 passing of Ron Townsend, retired

“This is our way of saying ‘let’s continue on that dream,’” Lizzi said. “We wanted to find a way to celebrate Italian culture during Italian Heritage Month and we incorporated both together.”

“This is our fourth (Italia Fest) and it was all started because one of my friends and customer’s wife got very ill,” Lizzi said of Tessie Smith, a well-known Tai Chi instructor in Milton who passed away in 2009. “Her dream before she passed away was to open a hospice and she started a foundation.”

All proceeds from the fourth annual Italia Fest go to the Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation (www.townsend-smith.ca). This year, the well-attended festival raised more than $20,000.

“It’s a taste of the Italian culture along with some great food, great music and great people,” said Posteraro. “It’s gone very well. It’s brought the community together.” La Rose Italian Bakery owner Sal Lizzi was taken aback by the popularity of the party taking place outside his store at 327 Bronte St S on June 7.

“We almost double in attendance every year. This is our busiest year—this is crazy,” Lizzi said. “There are people coming from

International Yoga Day Photos by Eskay and Rick Di Lorenzo

I

nternational Yoga Day in Milton on Sunday, June 21st was a wonderful new initiative taken on by the Art of Living Foundation and Gayatri Pariwar. Internationally the day is celebrated by over 2 billion people in over 150 countries. Locally, Milton celebrated this beautiful event with over 150 people. Regional Milton councillor Colin Best and local Milton councillor Rick Di Lorenzo were in attendance. The event started off with some enthusiastic Dance Yoga, transitioned into Pragya Yoga and Sri Sri Yoga, and finally, ended off with some peaceful meditation. People of all different

backgrounds and faiths attended and left with a smile on their faces. Nik Thakkar (volunteer with both Art of Living and Gayatri Pariwar of Western Ontario) says, “In yoga, the brain is quieted; the senses are stilled, generating a calm feeling of well-being. The brain and body then work together and energy is evenly balanced between the two. No other form of exercise do that which result in total wellbeing. The success of this event can be directed towards all the dedicated Art of Living

volunteers. Art of Living teacher, Mitesh Sharma, brought a new feel to the program as he discussed and led the group through a new dimension of Yoga. He credits the success of the event to Art of Living founder, his Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a global humanitarian leader. Sri Sri designed a special program called the Happiness course which is dedicated to exploring the different dimensions of Yoga and creating harmony within oneself. More information about this course and other courses, as well as local timings, can be found on the website Artofliving.ca

Industrial developer throws down

$5 million challenge for MDH expansion

A

new campaign to finance Milton District Hospital’s expansion project to nearly triple in size has received a huge fundraising challenge from a philanthropic landlord.

“That really worked,” recalled Phil King, president of Orlando Corporation. “It grew the (CT scan) campaign and they got what they needed.”

Industrial real estate developer Orlando Corporation announced on May 7 its plan to match $5 million in donations to the Milton District Hospital Foundation’s Our Home, Our Hospital campaign. Funding for the campaign will be shared among the provincial government, Halton Healthcare Services and the community.

King said the immediate plan is for Orlando Corporation to match all gifts of $100,000 or more to a maximum $5 million.

MDHF Chair Brian Penman said the relationship between Orlando and Milton has been developing over a number of years. “It began seven years ago when we were doing a $5 million campaign for a CT Scanner. They (Orlando) stepped forward and offered $750,000 and the community had to match that. So that led to $1.5 million,” Penman said.

12 | Milton Villager | July 2015

“We try to do this with all the communities we’re involved with,” he said. “Milton had actually come to us with a proposal and I think we surprised them with what our response was — it was a lot more than what their original proposal was.” Orlando decided to double up on Milton’s original $2.5-million proposal. “We exceeded it in a big way. They were pleasantly surprised and pleased to accept,” King said. “I think this really helps and I think it will put them over the top whenever it gets moving, and it’s something we’re glad to do.”

The Milton District Hospital expansion will add 330,000 square feet of space to the existing 125,000- square-foot hospital. The expansion includes an increase to overall capacity from 63 to 129 inpatient beds, the hospital’s first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine and a Level 2A Special Care Nursery with capacity for eight bassinets in the Maternal Newborn Unit. Much-needed infrastructure will be afforded through potentially $10 million in new funds raised by the MDHF and Orlando donation challenge, kick-starting Milton’s $30-million, multi-year capital campaign. Milton District Hospital COO Janet Skupsky said the fundraising challenging will be central to making the MDH expansion work. “Having a big gift like that just really makes us know that we’re going to make this successful, to be able to open with all the equipment we’re going to need for the community we serve.”

Phil King, president of Orlando Corporation (far right), was in Milton to share the good news that his company plans to match up to $5-million in donations to kick-start the multiyear, $30-million Milton District Hospital Foundation (MDHF) Our Home, Our Hospital capital campaign. he Fine Arts Society of Milton (FASM) held their first annual Aperture Photography Show and Sale at the Mohawk Inn and Conference Centre on Saturday June 13, 2015. The show featured a number of local artists including Trixy Benner, Justino Magalona, Peter Young, Elaine Hall, Dave Haringa, Shane McDermid, Elizabeth Kiddle and our very own photographer Grant Rushton. Many of the photographers who take part in shows held by the Fine Arts of Milton can be found taking pictures of your families and friends at various celebrations in their life. They enjoy shows like this to really “show our passion” for the artistic side of photography explains Magalona. It was a perfect day to showcase the artwork out on the patio. An added highlight to the show was the delicious food and wine samples supplied by the Chop House and Horseman’s Lounge located in the Mohawk Inn and the wonderful entertainment of Elvira Hopper and Darryl Joseph-Dennie of Heart and Soul.

Gtournament ame Oraises n $10,000 Third Annual

By Laura Steiner Photos by Trevor Black

“G

ame On” For Milton Orthotics and Wellness Centre (MOWC) owner Angelo Posteraro the two words evoke memories of childhood street hockey games. “We went back and thought of it when we were kids.” When the goalie would cover the ball, and play would be stopped you’d shout “Game On” to resume play. It also signalled the beginning of the Third Annual Milton Orthotics & Wellness Centre (MOWC) foundation’s ball hockey tournament for the Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK)

The annual hockey tournament started as Posteraro’s idea. They were looking for a second event for their MOWC Foundation and came up with a ball-hockey tournament. He was looking for how to make it different. “We’ll build rinks from scratch, and close down the parking lot,” he explained. The next step was finding a charity, and the ROCK was chosen. When they first talked about it, Posteraro knew nothing. “I started investigating, found out how underfunded they were, and how much help they were giving the community.” The ROCK is a Halton-based organization specializing in kids’ mental health. This year’s event took place June 13, 2015. Over 90 kids signed up. Manager of Community and Youth Development Kelly Guliani represented the ROCK. The tournament has increased the group’s profile over the last few years. “The

more that people know about mental health challenges, know about the services out, it all helps to reduce the stigma and negative feelings around mental health,” she explained. The ROCK offers a wide variety of services to children, and families including a 24 hour crisis line. They have centres in Burlington, Oakville, and Milton. Kids were ‘drafted’ onto teams based on their age group. Four teams of six kids played on two different rinks with home-made boards. “It helps them grow to make new friends,” Sean DeLisa said. He was there with son Gian-Lucca who was on the third-place winning team in his division. The idea of kids helping kids is something else that makes it special. “They’re playing really for their peers,” Posteraro added. The tournament raised approximately $10,000. Some players were participating for their friends who’ve used the service. “It’s important to raise money for it because it helps people when they need help,” Grace Dennis said. For more information on the ROCK visit their website at www.rockonline.ca. Their Milton location is at 400 Bronte St. South, Suite 101. It offers a walk-in therapy clinic from 12pm8pm every Wednesday.

Over 90 kids took part in all age groups from 6-8, 9-11, and 12-15

ustomized car enthusiasts pulled into Achilles Mazda at 1195 Steeles Ave. in Milton to show off their vehicles and share some pointers on various upgrades.

in Milton,” Jacobson said. “It’s an event to promote the club and a great way for people to meet each other, support our dealerships, raise money for charity and bring the community together.

Ami Jacobson, president of the torontomazda3.ca message board, said the meet up on June 6 was a chance for forum users to meet and to show off their models ranging from 2004 to 2015. The more than 50 vehicles and owners in attendance from across the GTA “runs the gamut of everyone’s flavour,” Jacobson said, with sick rides on the lot including heavy exterior modifications like rims, tires, hydraulics and paint jobs. Others included major under-thehood mods to improve acceleration, gas mileage and overall performance.

Many of the Mazda3s parked on the lot during the Show and Shine event had more than $10,000 worth of upgrades. If the season opener barbecue had an awards ceremony, Jaimie Cheeseman’s Mazda3 would be declared Best in Sound. Cheeseman, who shouted over house music blasting from his rumbling, $2,000 sound system — which would’ve cost him $8,000 had he only installed new parts — said: “I could do even more if I want to, but for now I’m really happy with it.”

“This is our annual, season-opening barbecue and this year we’re partnering with Achilles Mazda. They’re an affiliate dealer of ours in a great central location

18 | Milton Villager | July 2015

Chris Pearson popped the hood of his ride to demonstrate some expensive muscle in the form of an upgraded GT71r turbo. He said the 50 per cent boost to his car’s stock power means

his Mazda3 “doesn’t fall flat on its face” between gears. “Right to the end of the gear it feels like you’re only going to go faster, faster and faster.” Ryan Rolda was bit by the modification bug and has worked on making his 2004 Mazda3 “look like a luxury car” over the past decade. Show and Shine attendee Nathania Marie showed off her Mazda3’s pink flare on June 6. Marie was one of the earliest arrivals to the season opening event so that she could have a rear diffuser installed by Achilles Mazda of Milton staff. “It looks fantastic,” she said. “These guys are awesome.”

A crowd formed as he demonstrated the $4,500, button-operated airlift suspension that allowed him to quickly raise his vehicle from it’s “Tim Hortons parking lot” resting position a handful of millimetres above the pavement, to several inches higher to navigate difficult road conditions and speed bumps. “This car is probably going to stay with me forever,” Rolda said. “If the engine does go I’ll probably just get another engine.”

Christopher Alfonso-De Leon has owned three Mazda3s, and admitted to being a racetrack regular. But the life of the forum moderator, who brought his entire family to the Show and Shine, has switched gears now that he’s driving a Mazda5, which is the brand’s spacious, compact minivan. “I’ve raised my family with the Mazda family,” he said. “At this point in my life I go for the more cosmetic style.” The main draw of the event, according to Achilles Pelitis Jr., was the unveiling the 2016 MazdaCX-3. The dealership’s owner said he was thrilled to extend an invitation to all members of Torontomazda3.ca, an active message board with more than 20,000 registered users. “Who better to expose our newest vehicle to than the people that are the most enthused about our product,” Pelitis said. “Lots of people invested a lot of money to personalize and customize their vehicles, so it’s testament to the brand and how much people love our products.”

t’s all about timing for the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. They had three different events geared to different crowds. Miracle on Main St. aims at families, and schools in midDecember. TigerFest targets live concert or wrestling fans. But there was nothing for the local business community. “There’s lots of corporate, and business people out there that say we can’t come out in the dead of winter, and summer time we’re gone (for Tiger Fest).” Tiger Jeet Singh Jr explained. And that’s when they came up with Teeing Off for a Miracle. The second annual tournament was held June 19 at Granite Ridge Golf Course.

20 | Milton Villager | July 2015

It drew businesspeople from Milton, and beyond. Waseem Ahmad, and Tariq Malik came from Etobicoke Ontario. “They’re helping quite a few people, and we love to be part of it.” Miracle on Main St is a yearly food and toy drive benefitting Halton Women’s Place, the Salvation Army, Sick Kids’ Hospital, and McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton. 2014’s event raised over $200,000.

The community’s generosity is what it’s all about for Tiger Jr. “Sickness or poverty do not discriminate, neither should the spirit of giving,” he remarked. Although Miracle on

Main Street is held at Christmas time its goal is to promote giving among all faiths. This year marks Miracle on Main’s sixth year. Their first event in 2009 drew only 1200 people. Since then it’s grown to include the closure of Main St. in front of Troy’s diner. This year ten schools have signed up to drop toys off. It will include midway rides, a petting zoo, silent auction, and much more. It will be held December 14. “December 14 is right around the corner,” reminded Tiger Jr. Visit tigerjeetsinghfoundation.com for more information on the foundation including how to donate.
