HAIRSPRAY

HAIRSPRAY delighted audiences by sweeping them away to 1960’s Baltimore, where the 50’s are out and change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight, she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair? Rated PG.

Rainbow Theatre

Stuart Little

This is the endearing classic about a mouse named Stuart Little who is born into an ordinary New York family. All the charm, wisdom and joy of the E.B. White original are captured in this adaptation by Joseph Robinette, who also dramatized the highly acclaimed stage version of Charlotte’s Web. The many adventures - both big and small - of Stuart Little are brought vividly to life in this theatre presentation. The acting ensemble plays many human and animal roles in a series of delightful scenes that make up the marvelous maneuverings of a mild-mannered mouse trying to survive in a “real people’s world.” Rated G. YPT - Youth Program Team

13

Project Cornerstone is the Santa Clara County-wide collaborative working to mobilize our entire community to shift from simply reacting to children and youth as problems to connecting with them so they thrive. By incorporating the 41 developmental assets into the lives of youth, together we can support our children and grow a healthy society. Assets are 41 values, experiences and qualities that help kids succeed. Milpitas Parks & Recreation Services Youth Program Team supports these assets to help our community’s kids prosper. Below is the Asset-A-Month calendar and tips on how you can help reinforce these assets at home with your child(ren)!

February Asset #8: Youth as Resources Young people are given useful roles in the community. • Ask for your child’s opinion on a decision you’re trying to make. • Have a family meeting and get everyone’s ideas on accomplishing household tasks. Share the decisions and share the work. • Let your child be responsible for certain family needs such as checking out summer camps, leading a family meeting or planting a garden. March Asset #17: Creative Activities Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theatre or other arts. • Set aside an arts area in your home. Keep construction paper, paint, glue, string, scissors and other creative supplies on hand. • Explore the art and music of a culture that is different from yours.

To learn more about Project Cornerstone and the Search Institutes’ Developmental Assets, visit www.projectcornerstone.org.

April Asset #9: Service to Others Young person serves in the community one hour or more per week. • Together, help a neighbor. Maybe an elderly neighbor would appreciate you mowing their lawn. • Help your child put together a weekly schedule of activities that includes some kind of service to others.

Youth

January Asset #14: Adult Role Models Parent(s) and other adults model positive, responsible behavior. • Treat your child with love and respect. • Model appropriate behaviors. When you make mistakes, admit them. Apologize for failures. • Spend time together often. Be involved in your child’s life on a daily basis.

May Asset #18: Youth Programs Young person spends three or more hours per week in sports, clubs or organizations at school and/or in the community. • Ask your school or community center for a list of after school activities. Discuss options with your child. • Model having an “extracurricular activity” yourself. If they have time, parents should also have hobbies or activities that they do outside of a job and/or home. June Asset #10: Safety Young person feels safe at home, school and in the neighborhood. • Be an “askable” parent so your child learns he/she can tell you about things that concern him, especially personal safety issues. • Give practical suggestions on how your child can be safe in specific circumstances.

Volunteer Opportunities Milpitas Volunteer Partners

The City of Milpitas hosts many community programs, events, and activities throughout the year that serve the Milpitas population and local surrounding areas. Volunteers are frequently recruited to assist in various aspects of these programs, providing valuable staff support, as well as help and encouragement to citizens. Opportunities exist for working on a variety of tasks in every department within the City structure. Different opportunities are available at various times throughout the year and time commitments vary based on the specific task requirements and the volunteers’ availability. All those interested in volunteering must complete an MVP application, and pass the screening and interview process specific to a given opportunity.

Volunteer Highlight Howl At The Moon Last October’s Howl At The Moon Halloween event was a huge success in part by the support from many volunteers from Milpitas High School, Piedmont Hills High School, Silver Creek High School and several students from the local middle schools. The volunteers helped staff the carnival games, dog and costume parade, the pumpkin patch and art and crafts tables. Volunteers also assisted the Parks and Recreation Services staff in both the set-up and clean-up of the event. In the MVP office, we continue to have dedicated volunteers year after year because of the programs we offer to the community, but most importantly the fun experience that one has when volunteering at our events.

On-going Volunteer Opportunities

The City of Milpitas is recruiting volunteers to assist with the following programs: Adopt-A-Spot • After The Bell Tutors Building Department • Clean-A-Park Community Fire Aides • Finance Department Graffiti Terminators • Lend-A-Tool Program Neighborhood Beautification • Planning Department Police Explorers • Police Reserves Police Senior Outreach • Recreation Class Aides Parks & Recreation Services Special Events Senior Center Volunteers • Teen Center Volunteers Volunteer Services

Clean-A-Park Program

Bring your friends, classmates and family to help pick up litter, pull weeds, rake leaves and check for graffiti on signs, restroom walls, picnic tables and benches. Minimum age of volunteers for these events is 11 years. If you are under the age of 18, a parent/legal guardian signature is required on the day of the event. Work gloves and hand tools will be provided. For more information on dates/times or to volunteer, please contact the Milpitas Volunteer Partners at (408) 586-3207.

Allied Waste Services will hold its annual Compost Giveaway event at Newby Island Resource Recovery Park on May 5, 8:00 am-12:00 pm. Try carpooling with neighbors! Remember, only two free bags of compost per household. Look for your coupon in the Milpitas Post and at City of Milpitas public counters in April.
