As author, his shows include Barnum, starring Jim Dale, which introduced Glenn Close as a leading actress, with songs by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart (10 Tony Award nominations including Best Book and Best Musical, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical); 42nd Street, with songs by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, produced by David Merrick with direction and choreography by Gower Champion (Tony Award for Best Musical, Laurence Olivier Award for Musical of The Year, Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Musical, Plays and Player Citation For Musical Of The Year, etc.); The Three Musketeers with the music of Rudolph Friml; many collaborations with Michael Stewart including The Grand Tour, with songs by Jerry Herman; Treasure Island, with songs by Jule Styne; and the Off-Broadway opera Elizabeth & Essex, based on Maxwell Anderson’s play Elizabeth The Queen, with music by Doug Katsaros, and Pal Joey ’78, which he adapted for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production starring Lena Horne. WHO’S WHO Current: Dames At Sea on Broadway at The Helen Hayes Theater. MICHAEL STEWART (Co-Author) scored on Broadway the first time out when he won a Tony for his Bye Bye Birdie libretto. Subsequently he was the librettist for Carnival, for which he won the Drama Critics Circle Award, and Hello, Dolly!, which won him both the Tony and the Drama Critics prize. He also wrote the books for George M; Mack and Mabel and The Grand Tour, both book and lyrics for I Love My Wife, and lyrics for Barnum. Mr. Stewart died in 1987. HARRY WARREN AND AL DUBIN (Composer and Lyricist) were legendary tunesmiths both as a team and as individuals. Between the two, their prodigious careers spanned six decades. They wrote Broadway shows and revues and were pioneer songwriters for sound pictures. Their combined output of songs can only be described as astonishing. Al Dubin, born in Switzerland in 1891, died in New York in 1945. Harry Warren was born in Brooklyn in 1893 and passed away in 1981. His first hit song was written in 1922, and he scored his last movie in 1962. His other collaborators included Ira Gershwin, Billy Rose, Joe Young, Gus Kahn, Arthur Freed, Johnny Mercer, Mack Gordon, Mort Dixon, Bud Green and Ralph Blane. GOWER CHAMPION (Director and Choreographer of original 42nd Street) was awarded the Tony Award for Best Choreography for 42nd Street and also won the Drama Desk Award in the same category. His name is synonymous with some of the greatest musicals in Broadway history. He was the director and choreographer for Lend an Ear, Bye Bye Birdie (for which he won Tony Awards as Director and Choreographer), Carnival (Tony nomination for Direction), Hello, Dolly! (two more Tony

Awards for Direction and Choreography), I Do! I Do, The Happy Time (two more Tony Awards), Sugar, Irene and Mack & Mabel. He died in 1980.
