ANNUAL REPORT

JULY 1, 2022 - JUNE 30, 2023

Dear Friends of Mill River Park, As we approach the end of our 20th anniversary of Mill River Park Collaborative, we can’t help but marvel at how far we’ve come. By now, the swampy, trash-ridden dam that threatened the downtown area with damaging floods after every rainstorm is starting to feel like a distant memory, replaced by the transformation into the beautiful river and surrounding greenspaces we see today. We have gained significant momentum over the last two decades. Today, this annual report serves to highlight the incredible strides we’ve made in the last year, with thanks to our many invested individual and corporate donors, our board, our small and deeply dedicated staff, and of course, all the visitors who make the Park the place to be. This year, activity in the Park more than doubled over previous years. We answered the community’s need for a more robust lineup of fall activities, increased our volunteer group offerings to accumulate nearly 3,000 volunteer hours towards park improvement, and vastly exceeded our field trip attendance for this past school year, more than any previous year, with 1,745 children attending a field trip in the Park. We met new milestones this year with the opening of the Greenway North Path, the groundbreaking on the Mill River Park Playground renovation, and celebrating the first anniversary since the opening of the Whittingham Discovery Center. Now, we are looking forward to making progress on opening the Middle Corridor West project and refining our plans for the Community Commons festival and greenspace area. We are so honored to have the privilege of shaping the change and growth of the Park over time together with you. With each passing year, more people learn about this beautiful resource in the heart of Stamford, and have come to love it just as much as we all do. Thank you for helping us make the Park what it is today, and continuing to support its progress. We hope to see you in the Park soon! Sincerely,

Arnold M. Karp Board Chair

Nette Compton President and CEO

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Mill River Park Collaborative offers a range of high-impact programs that serve Stamford and surrounding area children and youth. The Whittingham Discovery Center, our state-of-the-art visitor and environmental education center, is the base for our environmental education programming and enables our educators to bridge outdoor exploration with indoor STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities. Through our field trips, youth workforce development programs, and out-of-school programs, we help to improve STEM literacy and increase students' knowledge and appreciation of nature and the environment while, at the same time, teaching important life skills and cultivating a sense of stewardship, community, and belonging.

7

YOUTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: STEWARDS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Mill River Park Collaborative’s youth workforce development programs meets a critical need in the greater Stamford community for paid internships that provide youth with career- and college-readiness training and workforce development in environmental conservation and the fast-growing green economy. The Stewards program is a year-round paid internship for Stamford high school students with a focus on increasing Stewards' environmental literacy and awareness. The program introduces Stamford high school students to careers in environmental conservation and stewardship, as well as provides them with the skills necessary to successfully navigate and prepare for work environments. Students engage in environmental projects, enriching field trips, and career-readiness workshops during their internship. Stewards master the skills and information necessary to pursue future jobs, internship opportunities, and environmental training at the collegiate level. Since its launch in December 2010, the Mill River Stewards program has served more than 100 teens ages 15 – 18. At least half of our interns came from underserved neighborhoods of Stamford that are predominantly Black and Hispanic areas. This is especially important considering that ethnic and racial minorities have been severely underrepresented in the environmental workforce, although they are the most likely to be affected by the impacts of climate change. Our high school Stewards internship program addressed these inequities by providing youth with opportunities to shape future success and become agents for change in their communities.

YOUTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: STEWARDS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2022 – 2023 Stewards Projects The Stewards interns were involved in a diverse range of projects designed to help them develop environmental conservation and career-readiness skills. These major projects included: Mapping the plants in the park Conducting a streambed assessment to track bank erosion and river meander Performing water quality monitoring Pulling almost 700 pounds of trash out of the river Installing erosion-control measures on the riverbanks Removing invasive species Learning meadow conservation management tactics Participating in career preparation workshops Learning about climate change and greenhouse gases, and urban ecology and sustainability engagement Students also participated in trips to Central Park, New York Botanical Garden, Mianus River Gorge Preserve, and Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum.

9

YOUTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: DOCENTS

10

The Docents program was launched in 2021 as an expansion of our successful Stewards program. These paid positions enhance the Park's outreach by helping Park visitors connect with the natural, cultural, and historical resources of the Park. Docents are available to visitors as a helpful guide in the Whittingham Discovery Center and also run educational pop-up programs at the Henkel Discovery Cart in the Park. This year-round program is twofold: It provides key workforce skills and training that serve as a launching pad for the Docents in their fields of interest. They develop career-readiness skills for jobs in parks, zoos, museums, nature centers, aquariums, and other similar organizations that engage the public.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: FIELD TRIPS All school programs are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, enabling teachers to reach a broad range of curricular objectives, while supporting the need for experiential and hands-on learning. Through our guided field trips, ranging from 90 minutes to half- and full-day experiences, students learn about local habitats and ecosystems in the park, including the Mill River itself, and how the Park addresses current environmental challenges.

1,745 students were served through field trips this fiscal year – more than double the students served in any previous year. 16 schools served in Stamford and Greenwich: Cloonan Davenport Ridge Greenwich Country Day Hart Magnet Julian Curtiss KT Murphy Newfield Northeast

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: HENKEL RESEARCHERS’T WORLD TM

Henkel Researchers’ World is an education initiative designed by Henkel to introduce children (ages 7 – 11) to the fascinating world of science by putting them in the role of an actual researcher. The Henkel Researchers’ World classroom in our Whittingham Discovery Center has welcomed thousands of students and children through our educational programming, including field trips, Henkel Researchers’ World classes, and other drop-in programs. Our Discovery Cart, launched in summer 2022, extends the learning from the Henkel classroom out into the Park! The Cart, pictured on page 10, offers 15-minute pop-up experiments run by our Docents every weekend in the Park (weather permitting) and has been gaining popularity with Park visitors.

CORPORATE VOLUNTEERS

19

This fiscal year, we more than doubled our volunteer group visits to help our hardworking Landcare staff maintain the 30+ acres of greenspace within Mill River Park. Their time and effort help ensure that the flora and fauna are thriving and that the Park is looking its best for the Stamford community. We greatly appreciate all of our volunteers’ donated time, as well as their financial contributions. This fiscal year, we raised $4,500 through volunteer contributions!

906 volunteers 2,893 volunteer hours donated

MAIN STREET GARDEN VOLUNTEERS The Main Street Garden is Mill River Park’s own mini botanical garden, featuring an array of beautiful floral gardens and plants. Situated outside the Main Street entrance, the Garden would not be what it is without its wonderful volunteers, Laura Godown, Eve Lapine, Sondra Limeburner, and Vickie Ruehl. The Collaborative is deeply grateful for these Mill River Park champions, who work tirelessly with our team to ensure the Park’s lasting beauty.

NEW MILESTONES AT MILL RIVER PARK

20

Greenway North Path Greenway North Path opened to the public in 2023. Mayor Simmons, Superintendent Lucero, former Stamford Mayor David R. Martin, Senator Ryan Fazio, and our Board Chair Arnold Karp and President and CEO Nette Compton came out to celebrate this one-mile new stretch of Park. The trail linking the central area of the Park with Scalzi Park to the north is a critical connector to area schools and neighbors. Hart Magnet Elementary School, Cloonan Middle School, and J.M. Wright Technical High School all connect directly to the pathway, with additional schools close by.

NEW MILESTONES AT MILL RIVER PARK Whittingham Discovery Center’s First Anniversary The Whittingham Discovery Center had its first anniversary this year in June 2023! The Center had tens of thousands of visitors come to tour the exhibits, enjoy field trips, attend special events hosted in and around the building, and rent the space for memorable moments with coworkers, families and friends.

EVOLVING PROJECTS AT MILL RIVER PARK

22

Playground The renovated playground is anticipated to open in late 2024 and will be built in the footprint of the original playground, which was erected in 2006 by over a thousand volunteers in just five days. The architecture firm helping to design the playground spent many months sourcing feedback via 2,000 touchpoints with the community, including 900 third graders. This feedback has been used to create a design that meets the needs and desires of the children and families who will use it.

2

EVOLVING PROJECTS AT MILL RIVER PARK Middle Corridor Our partners at the City of Stamford are working to build out this exciting new phase of Park construction. This highly anticipated section will include pathways, lighting, and sidewalk improvements. The planned opening for this exciting new feature is summer 2024.

Community Commons This central portion of the Park along Washington Boulevard will be home to a range of community programming, from Alive at Five to our Bark Park, and is the last remaining piece of this puzzle needed to complete the core center of the Park. We continue to refine the planning of this space with public workshops that will take into consideration all of what this space means to the Park and to Stamford.
