The Opening Reception will be Saturday April 24th from 5:30 to 7:30, and the show will hang through May 16th. Peter Van Dyck (b. 1978) returns to the Grenning Gallery after several years with a strong and evolved body of work. Van Dyck's work has advanced immensely in the five year's since he has shown with us. Although he was painting an interesting mix of still lifes, landscapes and a few intriguing interiors...he has delved much more deeply into the latter. In addition to building on this theme, we also see a decidedly looser and more free brush stroke, which leverages his Florence Academy training into the 21st century. Van Dyck's latest paintings focus more on the abstract design and his curiosity at the light effects of contemporary life.

I Love You” Museum Hours For some 13 years, from 1954 until his death in 1967, the abstract painter Ad Reinhardt sent poetic illustrated notes and postcards to Olga Sheirr, with whom he had an intermittent love affair. Nearly 90 of them will be on view in “In the Minds Of Me” at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs. The exhibit opens on Saturday, May 1, and can be seen through July 24.

Flanagan, founder of Bamboo Fencer at a spring fencing workshop at LongHouse Reserve. They return to Northern New England and Canada in May. Seals belonging to the Pinniped family (meaning “feather footed” or “winged”), are true seals which lack external earflaps, have torpedo shaped bodies for fast swimming. They have long, sharp claws to help them dig into the ice while climbing out of the water or onto the beach. Unlike sea lions, their front flippers are short and they are referred to as “earless” seals. Their hind flippers are webbed and pointed backwards to help them swim. They have been recorded swimming over 12 miles per hour and have been spotted swimming 70 miles off of the coast of Long Island. Seals haul out of the water to rest, sleep, and warm up in the sun’s heat. While on land sunning themselves, they are often seen in a “banana” shaped position. The seals we see on Long Island are most often Harbor seals, but there are a few other types, such as harp seals, grey seals, hooded seals, and ringed seals. Numbers have been increasing in past years into the thousands around Long Island due to the changing location of their food sources and the changing temperatures of their watery habitat. Most of the seals that visit Long Island are younger seals. These marine mammals eat a variety of crustaceans, fish and shellfish like mussels, clams, oysters and squid.

Bring the family and join Crystal on this nature adventure through a variety of habitats to look for the first spring emergent plants and animals.

We’ll walk through a small oak forest, get onto a boardwalk which goes through a swamp, then cross a bridge over a stream and go back through the woods once again. While we’re walking we may see a Marsh Blue-violet, or even a Bullfrog or a Snapping Turtle. We’ll also be on the lookout for winter resident birds preparing to return to their summer breeding grounds. This is about a one mile round-trip walk and is recommended for adults and children, 5 years of age and older.

Sun 4/11 In Search of Cavity Nesting Birds 8:00 am (Sag Harbor) Walk Leader: Joe Giunta. Join Joe, an expert birder and Director of SoFo’s Bluebird Nest Box Program, on this walk to see cavity nesting birds such as woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice, chickadees, and bluebirds. Cavity nesters either excavate holes in standing, decaying trees, called snags, or use holes created by other species. Since the number of snags has been reduced due to issues such as development, many of these birds are now dependent on man-made nest boxes. Joe will discuss these points while introducing you to the life histories of many of our cavity nesting birds.

This walk is for adults; however, children 12 years of age and older may attend.

Sat 4/17 The Colors and Shapes of Nature 10:00 am (Bridgehampton) Program Leader: Lindsey Rohrbach, SoFo Nature Educator. Nature has combined colors and shapes to create the beautiful world outdoors. We will explore the field in back of the museum with Lindsey, a SoFo Nature Educator, as she works with children to help them “read the landscape” by unraveling nature’s complex mixtures of color and shape. Children will learn about shapes by playing a matching game, using flowers and leaves, and by coloring their own scenic landscape. This program is for children ages 2 to 5. Join astronomers Steve Bellavia, Justine Haupt, and David Van Poppering from the Custer Institute and Observatory in Southold for a special guided tour of celestial phenomena: moon, stars, constellations, and perhaps the Lyrid meteor shower. Sat 4/24 Seaweeds of the Drift Line and Tide Pool 11:30 am (Montauk) Walk Leader: Larry Liddle. Larry Liddle, Professor Emeritus at Southampton College, LIU and visiting professor in marine science at Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai, Thailand has engaged in the scientific study of seaweeds throughout his career. On this walk with Larry we’ll have an opportunity to visit and study a drift site where subtidal seaweeds pile up after a storm and then investigate an intertidal spot to see and identify the most characteristic genera found there. Don’t forget to ask Larry about his herbarium of dried and pressed seaweed.

Sat 4/17 Uncovering Alcor’s Secret 8:00 pm $13/$10 Members/$5 Students Last year, Neil Zimmerman, one of Custer's student Members who is now attending Columbia University, led an observing team that discovered that Alcor, a star in the handle of the Big Dipper, is a binary. Neil stated "I'm fortunate enough to be part of a research team that is pushing the limits of high contrast imaging, a new area of astronomy. Combining cutting edge optical tools with the venerable 200" Palomar telescope, we're probing the neighborhoods of nearby stars for cool, dim stars and exoplanets which would otherwise be lost in the glare of their hosts. One of our first finds was a companion star to Alcor, an old stargazer's friend in the Big Dipper. The story of our discovery has unexpected ties with Galileo and a Romanian play from 1942, which I'll discuss in my presentation at Custer." This year’s “Oysterfest” focuses on the local influence and raw flavor of oysters, but most importantly, the biggest question of debate and passion: Which wines pair best with oysters? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its hey day when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.' Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand.

When young Mozart toured Europe, he astounded members of resplendent courts wherever he performed. He began composing at the age of six, and, by the time he died at age 36, he had created 754 works, all of which are considered masterpieces. Twenty-one operas; 41 symphonies; 44 concertos for a variety of instruments, including 27 for solo piano; 19 piano sonatas; 18 violin sonatas; songs for solo voice or chorus; chamber music. In this lecture, we will share biographical information, especially as it relates to Mozart's creative process, as well as a varied offering from among his pearly and poignant piano works. Greek-American pianist and composer Miltiades Matthias studied music at the Royal Conservatory of Athens and at the College Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati. Matthias was awarded the 1997 distinction, "Educator of the Year Through the Arts," by the Hellenic-American Educators Association. Matthias has given concerts across America and Europe. Join SoFo and Frank Quevedo of the Town Hatchery staff to see how the Town raises ten million seed shellfish — hard clams, oysters, and bay scallops — for the purpose of restocking public shellfish beds in Town and surrounding State waters, beds that were devastated in the mid-1980s by the region-wide series of smothering algae blooms (brown tide). On this tour of the hatchery, housed in one of the last remaining structures from the World War II Naval Torpedo Range in Montauk, you will have an opportunity to understand shellfish breeding and spawning, see the larval stages and early juvenile rearing of millions of these animals, plus the food production systems that allow them to grow. This visit is a prelude to a summertime flat-bottom boat ride to the inlet of Napeague Harbor to see where and how the Town “grows-out” these clams, scallops, and oysters for later seeding. Chris Roberts, who will lead this walk, is an experienced naturalist who has been tracking the status and trends of bird populations in our area for the Breeding Bird Survey — a long term large scale international avian monitoring program. Many of Long Island’s priority species are beachnesting birds that are found in few other places in the state, including the federally threatened Piping Plover. This region supports more than 400 breeding pairs of Piping Plovers that make up approximately 25 percent of the Atlantic Coast population and over 10 percent of the global population. Despite these numbers, the Piping Plover remains a federally threatened species and Long Island’s nesting populations are considered vulnerable. In this special program you’ll have an opportunity to learn about Piping Plovers, their identification, breeding behavior, and habitat requirements, and how you can help with local monitoring efforts and habitat protection. The program will be followed by a field trip to nesting sites to see these small, stocky shorebirds known for their "peep-lo" call and rapid "peck-and-run" behavior. Carolyn Spilman, a wildlife biologist, started the Long Island Bird Conservation Program with Audubon New York in May 2007. The program focuses its efforts on beach nesting birds and their conservation issues. Children over the age of 8 may attend. Space is limited, so make your reservations early.

One reason is how fast they grow. They can sprout in only one week. Sunflowers are important to many of our local animals. Some use them for food, others for nectaring. Children will join Heather to learn about some of our native sunflowers, plant some sunflower seeds for their own garden and for SoFo’s Butterfly Garden, and then create their own paper-plate sunflower, stem and all. This program is for children 4 to 8 years of age.

Sat 5/29 Life of the Field – Family Nature Walk 10:00 am (Bridgehampton) Walk Leader: Crystal Possehl, SoFo Nature Educator. The field behind the South Fork Natural History Museum – SoFo, is resplendent with life.

On this walk we’ll use all our senses to help us learn about the many plants, birds, mammals, and insects that call this field home. Crystal will teach us about plant identification, help us to identify the birds in the field by sight and by song, and point out which birds prefer to nest in the boxes we’ve put up and which prefer to nest in bushes. There are wooden boards in the field and we will have a chance to look under them and, with luck, discover a hidden vole, shrew, or even a snake. Plus, we’re sure to see lots of insects that love the dark, damp earth under these boards.

This one hour walk is recommend for adults and children 5 years of age and older. Long pants, socks, and bug repellent are musts!

Sat 5/29 Shorebirds at Shinnecock 8:00 am (Hampton Bays) Walk Leader: Hugh McGuinness. Join Hugh McGuinness, master birder and science educator at the Ross School, on this shorebird migration walk. In addition to seeing migrating shorebirds you’ll be on the lookout for the Seaside Sparrow, Salt marsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow, Clapper Rail, Boat-tailed Grackle, and other specialties of the area. In 1979 Winston migrated to North America and settled with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

After observing different artists and DJ styles, Winston formulated his unique style of singing. He appears at live stage shows, free styling and showing his national ability to deliver various song styles and vocal ranges, allowing him to gain a huge fan base wherever he performs.

He was reassured of his love for guitar after hearing BB, Albert, and Freddie King. Also Muddy Waters, John L. Hooker, Hubert Sumlin, and Johny Winter. Then SRV's Texas Flood, and Matty was forced by strong emotion to try and mimmick the sounds pouring out of the beat up strat. Thurs 5/20 Signify 9:00 pm $10 In 2004, the rock scene in New York was changed forever. Signify was born. Dawnette Darden's frankenstein-like creation of the best musicians New York had to offer. Darden, dubbed 'the miniature Tina Turner' after her incredible voice and style, had previously toured throughout Europe and North America as a member of numerous different musical acts. After years of doing this, she finally realized that what she really craved was a band of her own. As a result, Dawnette took it upon herself to recruit the most outstanding musicians she could find with intentions of creating a musical masterpiece.

They observe, wonder, ask questions, and learn by doing so. Barbara Blaisdell, or Mrs. B as she is known, has spent 34 years as an educator in the Sag Harbor School District encouraging children to ask “Why?” In this program she brings her skills as a naturalist to explore with children the joys of wondering about the natural world. One piece of information learned becomes the subject of another question and another after that, each question deepening a child’s understanding. “How do birds fly?” leads to a discussion about bird anatomy and aerodynamics. “Why do leaves change color?” leads to learning about hours of sunlight, chemistry, the color spectrum. In this program Mrs. B will go out into the field behind the museum with the children and through direct observation lead them to explore with her the wonders, ways, and whys of nature. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its hey day when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.' Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand.
