Fri 10/9 “8” – A Special Benefit Evening with Mira Nair 8:30 pm $27/$75 (film screening & cocktail reception) The Hamptons International Film Festival is proud to present a special benefit screening of the film "8", an unprecedented collection of short films by 8 world-renowned directors -- Abderrahmane Sissako, Mira Nair, Wim Wenders, Jane Campion, Gaspar Noe, Jan Kounen, Gus Van Sant and Gael Garcia Bernal -- each taking on one of the 8 "Millennium Development Goals" for 2015, adopted by 191 countries. Director Mira Nair will be at the Festival to present the film and share the work of MAISHA, her non-profit African Film Lab established to empower emerging artists in the region. Sat 10/3 Ben Model 3:00 pm $10 For the past 25 years Ben Model has served as resident silent film accompanist for The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

He has played for silents in many other venues around the U.S., has recorded numerous scores for silent film DVDs, and produces The Silent Clowns Film Series with film historian Bruce Lawton. Ben composes and improvises all his own scores, and performs in a style that is both evocative of the silent era and also aware of a contemporary (and younger) audience's awareness of music and film scoring. Ben is also a silent film historian, and often introduces the films he accompanies.

Sat 10/31 Rag-a-Muffins on Parade 9:00 am Free Saturday, October 31, the Southampton Chamber of Commerce will present their annual Halloween parade and pumpkin trail in the village of Southampton. Children are invited to dress u p in costume and march in the parade starting at 9:00 am at Lake Agawam Park.

After the parade children are invited to trick or treat in the village business district until 2:00 pm. Local merchants will distribute special treats to children in costume. Call for more information.

From almond to chocolate, biscotti is a long-lasting treat that is perfect for gift giving and can be made in an assortment of flavors.

Kathleen will share tips on making this “twice-baked” treat. Jason will tell us everything we need to know to know about coffee.

Sat 10/10 Candle Making Demonstrations 12:00 pm $4 adults/members and children Free Come see a demonstration of candle making on Saturday, October 10th from 12 to 3 pm. Bruce Matters will discuss the history and the evolution of candles from tallow, or animal fat, to spermaceti in the early 19th century to today’s beeswax candles. We will be making pure beeswax candles known for their soft light and long burning quality. Making candles became a regular chore for the women of the household to make a year’s supply of candles at butchering time. Typically done in the spring and fall, this chore fell to the young girls and their grandmothers of the house. Stop in and watch as the wicking is dipped 35 to 40 times to produce a taper shaped candle. Candles will be available for sale. The Rogers Mansion is located at 17 Meeting House Lane.

(Beer Enjoyers and Enthusiasts Retreat) in the Barn Festival takes place at the Rogers Mansion, a property of the Southampton Historical Museum, on Thursday, October 22 between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Don Sullivan, owner of Southampton Publick House, will present a beer tasting event to raise money for the Museum. Don will lead the tasting. Come sample a wide assortment of

artisan beers in the 1880 Nugent Carriage barn containing an exhibit of the Museum's whaling industry artifacts from the 19th century.

Don Sullivan will speak about the business of beer, from it's early 17th century origins in Southampton, what role beer played during prohibition and how the re-emergence of small brewers have radically changed the industry in the past 20 years. Four different beer brands will be sampled: Triple, Imperial Porter, Pumpkin and Octoberfest, all are very different beers and excellent examples of craft specialty brewing. String musician Dr. Dan Becker will provide entertainment. Admission is $15 per person, light refreshments will be served. musicians Billy Johnson and Teddy Charles, armed with upright bass and vibes respectively, will play their uniquely beautiful music, discuss the history of jazz in America and share their experiences of becoming performing jazz artists, followed by a Q & A session. To close out the evening, attendees will be encouraged to join the musicians for a session of jazz improvisation. The Bay to Sounds Trails project will provide nature trails and bike paths linking Greenport's waterfront to the shore of Long Island Sound. So stop by for an hour or stay all day. We hope to make this a true community event with families, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Village and Town Board members, everyone.

Wed 10/14 Cold-Stunned Sea Turtle Talk (Southold) 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Many times sea turtles don’t head south quite soon enough and can become “cold-stunned” (a condition similar to hypothermia), and can wash up on our shores. When discovered soon enough, these injured sea turtles can be nursed back to health by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. Join us along with a representative of the Riverhead Foundation and learn about the sea turtles in our local waters, and what to look for when walking our local beaches to help protect these unique animals. THE NATURE CONSERVANCY Mashomack Preserve, Shelter Island 749-1001 Edged in white by 10 miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast.

They collected radio data, compared it with other information about the planet, and began to match Jupiter's radio bursts with the planet's rotation. The observers realized that whether we hear Jupiter or not depends a lot on what part of the planet is facing us at the

time. It seems there are special longitudes where Jupiter is much more likely to be heard than others; the longitudes are like "landmarks" on a planet with no observable surface. In addition to the lecture on how the giant planet Jupiter is beaming mysterious signals from a distance of 365 million miles, there will be a “live” demonstration so those present can hear Jupiter themselves!

Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so

much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its hey day when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.'

Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand.

Organized by the African-American Museum of the East End, the program, selected by Bonnie Cannon, Brenda Simmons, and Cheryl Buck, will include films for children, families, and adults, as well as two shorts and the 1954 classic Carmen Jones. Gloria’s of the Hamptons will provide ethnic food between films. A day pass is $5; admission is free for Parrish members. In addition to Saturday’s day-long screening schedule, a special showing of the short documentary Beyond the Bricks will take place Thursday, November 5, at 7 pm, at the Parrish and will be followed by a panel discussion including director Derek Koen, producer Ouida Washington, and local educators, teachers, and parent advocates. Beyond the Bricks explores the issues that produce consistently low performance of African-American boys in the public school system and focuses on solutions to this critical problem. Sat 11/21 Harbor, a film by Steven Vega 6:30 pm Free Steven Vega’s film Harbor combines costume design, dance, video, and music to create echoes of a surreal world. Set within a seamless black space, Harbor focuses on various combinations of light and texture. It presents a dialogue between characters through dance. It highlights the subtle fluctuations of a conductor along with a musical score. Sheep's wool is used to cover the body, face, and hands of the players, and braids link bodies to each other. Ultimately, Harbor explores Vega’s underlying belief that film allows a moment of extreme intimacy for the viewer. This screening will be accompanied by a live musical performance. She believes that clothing should be beautiful, comfortable, practical, and above all- fun to wear! Josephine Glazebrook is the owner of Odyssey Stoneware in Port Jefferson. For 30 years she has been striving to fulfill her customers' desire for fine and functional stoneware and porcelain pottery. She finds the balance between function and beauty and learns through experimentation and serendipity. Jim Levison from Sag Harbor is a photographer. His work features both saltwater and freshwater fly fishing, hunting dogs and bird hunting, as well as a fine selection of general outdoor photography. Camp Sunshine, located in Casco Maine, is a public, 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. It is one of the only programs in the nation that focuses on the impact a diagnosis of a terminal illness has on the entire family. To celebrate the creative accomplishments of the Ross alumni, The Ross Gallery is presenting an ALUMNI ART EXHIBITION from November 19 to January 8. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 19 from 4–6pm.The exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media and video from almost 20 alumni that were graduated from Ross School in the years 2001-2009. Jazz in the Carriage House will consist of small performances, talks, improv sessions and interactive demonstrations, all focusing on the only form of music truly rooted in American history. The program kicks off on Thursday, October 29 from 7-8:30 PM when premier jazz musicians Billy Johnson and Teddy Charles, armed with upright bass and vibes respectively, will play their uniquely beautiful music, discuss the history of jazz in America and share their experiences of becoming performing jazz artists, followed by a Q & A session. To close out the evening, attendees will be encouraged to join the musicians for a session of jazz improvisation. Subsequent sessions, will be held the 3rd Thursday of each month on an ongoing basis, and will include both demonstration and instruction in jazz techniques and improvisation. All attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their instruments. Current music students of the School of the Arts and EEAC members may attend this program at no charge. Join us for this exceptional opportunity to learn about the tropical marine life brought to our waters in the fall by the Gulf Stream, in this program with PADI Master Diver Tony Pasquale. Tony, using an underwater camera, will show us fascinating footage of these tropical fish taken during his dives in the waters surrounding the Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays, one of Long Island’s premier dive sites. In addition you will learn about scuba gear, how to choose the right underwater camera system, and the principles of good underwater photography. THE NATURE CONSERVANCY Mashomack Preserve, Shelter Island 749-1001 Edged in white by 10 miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast.

Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of the island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the "Jewel of the Peconic." All programs require pre-registration.

In this quickly moving world of technology, children’s museums give families an opportunity to slow down and actively share in their children’s growth. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its hey day when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.'

Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand.

Chamber Series The Southampton Cultural Center announces the Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Music Series. The Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Players is a group of extraordinary musicians formed specifically for the Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Series. Yarn/Wire's primary mission is thus to present contemporary music performances which reflect a historical perspective while seeking to expand the current musical canon. The question of who wrote a new prime number theorem is the driving force of the play.

Produced on Broadway in 2001, the play won the Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Play that year. The 2005 film of the same name starred Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis. The drama will unfold on the lecture hall stage in the Ross School’s Senior Building, located on the left at 9 Goodfriend Drive, off Route 114.

Sat 12/5 Winter Water Birds 7:45 am Montauk Walk Leader: Hugh McGuinness. Experienced birder and science educator Hugh McGuinness will lead his annual winter walk at Montauk Point. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service states that “ the nearshore open waters surrounding Montauk Point provide regionally significant and critical winter waterfowl habitat and concentration areas. …. Found here in significant numbers, particularly in winter, are several species of special emphasis in the region, such as Common Loon, Common Eider, White-Winged Scoter, Surf Scoter, Black Scoter, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Great Cormorant, and Red-breasted Merganser. Harlequin Duck and King Eider occur here regularly during the winter, and this is the southernmost regular wintering population of Harlequin Ducks on the East Coast. On the Block Island Sound side of the peninsula, in somewhat more protected areas, American Black Duck, and Oldsquaw occur in large wintering concentrations. The sea duck concentrations around Montauk Point are the largest nearshore winter concentrations in New York…”

Feeding wild birds in winter is especially important in our area where development has removed a good deal of natural winter food resources for our local birds. Sun 12/27 Observing Seals 9:00 am Montauk Walk Leader: Lindsey Rohrbach. The end of December is a prime time to observe seals that arrive in our waters to become winter residents.

Join Lindsey, SoFo Nature Educator, on this walk through the deciduous forests of the scenic Seal Haul Out Trail in Montauk and down to the rocky shore, where at low tide you can expect to see harbor seals and an occasional gray seal sunning themselves on the exposed rocks.

The walk to see the seals is about one-half mile, so keep that in mind when bringing small children.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY Mashomack Preserve, Shelter Island 749-1001 Edged in white by 10 miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast.

Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of the island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the "Jewel of the Peconic." All programs require pre-registration.

MONTAUK POINT STATE PARK 631-668-5000 Seals on Long Island : During the cooler months, some special visitors from the north come to Long Island starting in mid-November. They return to Northern New England and Canada in May. Seals belonging to the Pinniped family (meaning “feather footed” or “winged”), are true seals which lack external earflaps, have torpedo shaped bodies for fast swimming. They have long, sharp claws to help them dig into the ice while climbing out of the water or onto the beach. Unlike sea lions, their front flippers are short and they are referred to as “earless” seals. Their hind flippers are webbed and pointed backwards to help them swim. They have been recorded swimming over 12 miles per hour and have been spotted swimming 70 miles off of the coast of Long Island. Seals haul out of the water to rest, sleep, and warm up in the sun’s heat. While on land sunning themselves, they are often seen in a “banana” shaped position. The seals we see on Long Island are most often Harbor seals, but there are a few other types, such as harp seals, grey seals, hooded seals, and ringed seals. Numbers have been increasing in past years into the thousands around Long Island due to the changing location of their food sources and the changing temperatures of their watery habitat. Most of the seals that visit Long Island are younger seals. These marine mammals eat a variety of crustaceans, fish and shellfish like mussels, clams, oysters and squid.

Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet.
