Art, Life and God, made in 1990-91, was his first body of work to draw serious critical attention and it both set the tone and laid the conceptual framework for much of what has followed. One of our most respected original Grenning Gallery artist returns this year with a very rich portfolio of paintings. Bauman's restrained palette yet painterly technique is well represented in this show. His mystical landscape "Long Road" is a delightful tonalist painting. These compositions draw the viewer in for their sheer beauty, then hold one beyond that first aesthetic gaze because of the unexpected - surreal even - juxtapositions that are represented. Viewing hours by appointment. Drawing inspiration and motivation from the African contemporary and indigenous art and other tribal examples that he has collected over the course of many years (his collection numbers close to 2,000 items), he is motivated by a desire to think about spirituality and to seek a way to access, channel, and touch it through the creative process. Simmons views a painting as similar to a message in a bottle or a spiritual emanation that when sent out into the world encompasses a realm of experience and a life of its own beyond that of its creator. Fri 10/2 Katharina D. Martin’s Forest Time 7:00 pm Free In a residency taking place September 22–October 4, the German-born, Rotterdam-based performance and video artist Katharina D. Martin takes advantage of the Watermill Center’s unique locale, in addition to its resources for interdisciplinary work. Entitled Forest Time, her project will entail her living, glamorously dressed throughout, in the woods surrounding the facility—and filming herself over the course of several days. She will be fully attired like a Marilyn Monroe-esque female icon, with a fresh manicure, makeup, evening wear, and high heels. She will carry out traditionally feminine activities, in addition to acts of survival and play, while living outdoors at Watermill. As she inhabits this striking incongruity—dressed up in artifice in a natural environment—Martin will reveal the absurdity of classic signifiers of glamorous femininity. This event is an opportunity to see Martin's work-in-progress, captured via video, to the general public. Fri 10/2 Open Mic Night with Liza Coppola, MC 7:00 pm Free Sat 10/3 Classical Music: Allegri String Trio with Wendy Fogel 8:00 pm Free Sat 10/10 Listening to Jupiter: A Lecture and Live Demo 8:00 pm Free Presenter: Ron Milione, Ph.D. .After the accidental discovery of radio bursts from Jupiter, scientists sought to understand the radio emissions. They collected radio data, compared it with other information about the planet, and began to match Jupiter's radio bursts with the planet's rotation. The observers realized that whether we hear Jupiter or not depends a lot on what part of the planet is facing us at the

time. It seems there are special longitudes where Jupiter is much more likely to be heard than others; the longitudes are like "landmarks" on a planet with no observable surface. In addition to the lecture on how the giant planet Jupiter is beaming mysterious signals from a distance of 365 million miles, there will be a “live” demonstration so those present can hear Jupiter themselves! The shower extends from October 2 - November 7 and peaks on Oct. 21-22. It averages about 30 meteors per hour. Although tonight is not the peak, the moon is only 1/3 full so we should still be able to see some Orionids streaking across the night sky. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and join us as we watch nature's wonderful sky show. Suggested Donation: $5 Non-Members, $3 Children, free for Members. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so

much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its hey day when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.' Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand. Based on the book Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl. The play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett is a stage adaptation of the book. The story, which made its debut in 1956, won both a Tony award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama. This riveting play about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed space above a warehouse allows audiences to feel their claustrophobic existence, their hopes, their fears and their indomitable will to survive. LITERATURE LIVE! brings the power of the word from the page to the stage. Using curriculum-based literature, Bay Street Theatre creates a unique learning experience by bringing professional theatre artists together to present first class productions. The possibilities for insight and understanding of the subject matter are only increased when students can witness the characters from a great play or novel living and breathing and telling their stories right before their eyes. LITERATURE LIVE! is designed specifically with middle and high school age students, their teachers and administrators in mind. In addition, Bay Street Theatre will present the play on weekends for family audiences, and other types of groups (such as seniors, churches, and temples) who may wish to attend. The below Performance Times have already be set. THE WATERMILL CENTER 39 Watermill Town Road, Water Mill, NY 11976 631.726.4628 Sat 11/21 Kant Elegant 4:00 pm Free The installation KANT ELEGANT derives its inspiration from Immanuel Kant. Kant was not only well-known in his time in Königsberg as a teacher, writer, and thinker, but also as an inherently elegant man. In clothing and dress he matched colors based on flowers because, as he said, "Nature doesn't produce what doesn't cater to the eyes." With this in mind, KANT ELEGANT aims to connect with and bring out the natural scenery of Watermill, presenting one outfit each from Coco Chanel (France), Yohji Yamamoto (Japan), Karl Lagerfeld (Germany), Calvin Klein (USA), and Giorgio Armani (Italy). The exhibitions will set match the clothing from these designers to fitting counterparts in color from the surrounding area. Sarah Ortmeyer, in collaboration with Alexis Kunsak, creates visual presentations based on her research and interest in the history of style, often building on overlooked connections between cultural and historical icons. Ortmeyer studies with Wolfgang Tillmans at the prestigious visual arts school Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste—Städelschule in Frankfurt, Germany. Please RSVP to this event. Sat 11/21 Harbor, a film by Steven Vega 6:30 pm Free Steven Vega’s film Harbor combines costume design, dance, video, and music to create echoes of a surreal world. Set within a seamless black space, Harbor focuses on various combinations of light and texture. It presents a dialogue between characters through dance. It highlights the subtle fluctuations of a conductor along with a musical score. Sheep's wool is used to cover the body, face, and hands of the players, and braids link bodies to each other. Ultimately, Harbor explores Vega’s underlying belief that film allows a moment of extreme intimacy for the viewer. This screening will be accompanied by a live musical performance. Please RSVP to this event. EAST HAMPTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Something is always arriving, something is always ending, a fact that is not lost on poets. Seasons, the other strand of the existential river of time and place, are colorful, relentless markers of our temporal existence, and one of the most visible, varied and vigorously evergreen subjects in all of poetry. As poets attempt to make art from the phenomenon of passing time, they use the vehicle of the seasons to engage our interest and sympathy via a breathtaking array of poetic techniques, such as elegy, humor, rhapsody, satire, irony and just plain orneriness to name but a few. From blooming cherries to nihilistic snowmen, it’s always great weather for poetry. Presented by the Shelter Island Poetry Project @ the Library. Curated by Bliss Morehead. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. The Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Players is a group of extraordinary musicians formed specifically for the Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Series. The group’s members hail largely from the New York area and are members of or have performed with such prestigious ensembles as the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Montreal Symphony and the Colorado Quartet and, between then, have been seen in virtually every major venue on the east coast. The SCCCP is excited, this season, to welcome Philip Setzer, violinist with the Emerson String Quartet as a guest performer on May 2, 2010. Sat 12/19 Yarn/Wire 8:00 pm $20/$10 students and seniors Yarn/Wire is the only active new music ensemble in the United States dedicated to expanding the body of works written for two pianists and two percussionists. Influenced by its members' diverse experiences in classical music, avant-garde theatre, and experimental popular music, the quartet champions both acoustic and electro-acoustic works that often challenge existing trends in musical aesthetics. Yarn/Wire's primary mission is thus to present contemporary music performances which reflect a historical perspective while seeking to expand the current musical canon. Newly commissioned works form the centerpiece of this vision, and Yarn/Wire aims to forge connections with the younger generation of composers from around the world. At 5:30 p.m. Book Reading featuring Rabbi Zimmerman & Cantor Stein. Chanukah is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the re-dedication of the Temple in 164 B.C. The reason for the celebration is twofold. One is the military victory of the small, ill-equipped Jewish army over the ruling Greek Syrians who had banned the Jewish religion and desecrated the Temple in 176 B.C. They then had to re-consecrate their Temple. Secondly, there wasn't enough oil to keep the candles lit throughout the night as was required, but by a miracle the oil that should have lasted one day lasted eight days, which was enough time to acquire a new supply, 44 Woods Lane, East Hampton; www.jcoh.org, 631-324-9858. Found here in significant numbers, particularly in winter, are several species of special emphasis in the region, such as Common Loon, Common Eider, White-Winged Scoter, Surf Scoter, Black Scoter, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Great Cormorant, and Red-breasted Merganser. Harlequin Duck and King Eider occur here regularly during the winter, and this is the southernmost regular wintering population of Harlequin Ducks on the East Coast. On the Block Island Sound side of the peninsula, in somewhat more protected areas, American Black Duck, and Oldsquaw occur in large wintering concentrations. The sea duck concentrations around Montauk Point are the largest nearshore winter concentrations in New York…” Sat 12/12 Newts, Salamanders, and Frogs, Oh Yeah!! 10:00 am Bridgehampton Registration is essential and is limited for this program; please reserve immediately! MONTAUK POINT STATE PARK 631-668-5000 Seals on Long Island : During the cooler months, some special visitors from the north come to Long Island starting in mid-November. They return to Northern New England and Canada in May. Seals belonging to the Pinniped family (meaning “feather footed” or “winged”), are true seals which lack external earflaps, have torpedo shaped bodies for fast swimming. They have long, sharp claws to help them dig into the ice while climbing out of the water or onto the beach. Unlike sea lions, their front flippers are short and they are referred to as “earless” seals. Their hind flippers are webbed and pointed backwards to help them swim. They have been recorded swimming over 12 miles per hour and have been spotted swimming 70 miles off of the coast of Long Island. Seals haul out of the water to rest, sleep, and warm up in the sun’s heat. While on land sunning themselves, they are often seen in a “banana” shaped position. The seals we see on Long Island are most often Harbor seals, but there are a few other types, such as harp seals, grey seals, hooded seals, and ringed seals. Numbers have been increasing in past years into the thousands around Long Island due to the changing location of their food sources and the changing temperatures of their watery habitat. Most of the seals that visit Long Island are younger seals. These marine mammals eat a variety of crustaceans, fish and shellfish like mussels, clams, oysters and squid. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category.
