Congratulations to Dr. Jen Allen Assistant Principal Dr. Jennifer Allen has been named Assistant Principal of the Year by the Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals, Region II. NASSP National Assistant Principal of the Year award program annual recognizes outstanding school leaders who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students. These assistant principals are acknowledged by their peers for the exemplary contributions they have made to the profession.

Have you or your family ever considered hosting a student visiting from another country? The exchange of cultures, traditions, foods, and friendship can be a very rewarding experience! Rotary Youth Exchange has arguably the best, most developed, and safe youth exchange program in the United States. Omaha West Rotary participates with Rotary Youth Exchange every year by hosting one outbound student and one in-bound student. A major responsibility for Omaha West Rotary is to find terrific host families with whom our inbound student will live while they are here in Omaha. The stay can vary in length, but two to three months is typical. It goes by way too fast! We are looking for host families now as well as into the first half of 2014. If you or your family are interested in being a host family and would like to learn more, please reach out to Kendall Scheer or Jeff Ziemba. Kendall and Jeff are members of and serve as co-coordinators of the Youth Exchange Program with Omaha West Rotary. Kendall can be reached at (402) 953-9184 or kscheer@fnni.com. Jeff can be reached at (402) 238-5445 or jziemba@smithhayes.com. Thanks for your interest!

Dual Enrollment Opportunities Millard West 2013-2014 Students taking specified Advanced Placement Courses are given the opportunity to dual enroll for college credit as well as high school credit. Currently Millard Public Schools is working with the University of Nebraska at Omaha. UNO determines which of Millard’s courses align with their college curriculum and which of Millard’s teachers qualify as adjunct professors. Only those courses and teachers approved by UNO offer the option of dual enrollment credit. Students must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or greater in order to qualify for dual enrollment credit. Students must also sign up for dual enrollment credit while enrolled in the corresponding Millard course. Students will not be allowed to retroactively pay for dual enrollment credit. Enrollment requirements are set by UNO and may be changed by them prior to any registration period. Students will earn credit from UNO and will need to have a transcript from UNO sent to the university they plan on attending. As with all transfer credit, the attending universities decide if and how they accept the transfer credit from UNO. It is recommended that students call the attending college and ask about the acceptance of the specific transfer credit before enrolling in the dual enrollment course. If a student is enrolling in a science or math program, the attending university may not accept dual enrollment credit in science and math. Most dual enrollment credits will transfer as general required courses rather than as major-specific course work. Students should call the admission’s office at the university they are planning on attending to check for specific information on transfer credit acceptance. All Advanced Placement Courses offer Advanced Placement Testing through the College Board each spring. All students enrolled in AP courses are expected to take the corresponding AP exams. Students may qualify for college credit depending on the grade they earn on the exam(s) and the university they are attending. A list of Advanced Placement credits granted by all colleges/universities is available at: http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/apcreditpolicy/index.jsp UNO’s Enrollment Process A UNO representative will visit the dual enrollment courses two weeks prior to the registration deadline. Students are then to turn in their registrations to the Millard West Administration Office within the two week window. The cost for each course, each semester will be $250 whether it is for a three-credit, four-credit, or five-credit class. Millard West will send the registrations to UNO. Each parent/student will receive a bill from the University and will pay UNO directly. No money should be given to Millard West. The $250 fee is a significant reduction in the normal tuition for a UNO class. UNO dual-enrolled students are required to take the AP test in May; however, UNO will pay for the AP exam costs (an $89 cost per exam in the spring of 2013) in the dual-enrolled subject. By turning in the enrollment forms, the parent/student is agreeing to a financial obligation and agreement with UNO. All of UNO’s policies apply. Students must pass the dual enrollment course with a grade of C or better to earn college credit. The grading scale will be the same as for all Millard classes. Grade weighting for advanced placement classes is for Millard’s GPA purposes only and does not apply to the UNO grade report. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Bob Lamberty or Kim Coleman at Millard West at 715-6001. For UNO specific questions, please contact Ms. Kelly Malone of the UNO Academic Affairs Office at 554-3810 or e-mail her at: malonek@mail.unomaha.edu or check http://dualenroll.unomaha.edu/studentqa.php

SOFTBALL Don Brummer

Friends of Millard West High School Activities;

BOYS TENNIS Noel Hoig

I recently had the opportunity to hear Dr. Greg Dale, Professor of Sport Psychology and Sport Ethics, from Duke University speak. Dr. Dale’s message centered on helping parents maximize their child’s potential. As you know, you, the parent, play a crucial role in determining whether or not your children have a positive experience in their respective activities. His message focused on the role parents play in their son or daughter’s activities. He also encourages parents to analyze the type of environment you are creating for your children.

VOLLEYBALL Erin Byrd BOYS BASKETBALL Bill Morrison

My goal is to summarize topics from his presentation and from his book titled, The Fulfilling Ride, and share with you the highlights in the monthly addition of the MWHS Newsletter.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Kip Colony

The topic this month is “Assessing Your Effectiveness”.

SWIMMING Tracy Stauffer

On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being Strongly Disagree and 5 being Strongly Agree, please rate your effectiveness as a parent of a child in activities….

WRESTLING Scott Townsley

___ I model good sportsmanship at all competitions in the way I interact with other parents, athletes, coaches and officials.

GIRLS SOCCER Jacque Tevis-Butler

___ I conduct myself in a manner such that my family and friends enjoy sitting next to me at competitions.

BOYS SOCCER Ron Beernink

___ I encourage and allow my child to talk to the coach/sponsor if he/she has an issue with the them before intervening myself.

GIRLS TENNINS MJ Robertson

___ I do not criticize my child’s coach or sponsor in front of my child.

BOYS TRACK Max Kurz GIRLS TRACK Seth Turman BOYS GOLF Eric Little BASEBALL Frank Ryan ________________________ PRINCIPAL Dr. Greg Tiemann ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR Chris Loofe ACTIVITIES SECRETARY Patti Ferguson ATHLETIC TRAINERS Jim Johnston & Katie Voth ASSISTANT A.D.’S Maggi Recob, Lance Smith

___ I do not give technical or strategic instructions to my child or other students during competition. ___ I provide total and unconditional love and support for my child regardless of how he/she performs. ___ I conduct myself in a manner that makes my child proud to have me in attendance. _____ TOTAL SCORE: 30-35 25-29 20-24 1-19

Excellent: You are a model activities parent Very Good: Communicate with your child to maintain your current perspective. Cause for Concern: Be willing to listen and make changes to regain a proper perspective. Out of Control: You have lost perspective. You could be in danger of ruining your child’s experience in activities.

Things to think about:  Children of all ages participate in activities primarily because it’s fun.  As a parent of a child in activities, you can create a situation where your child enjoys participating.  Be willing to make changes as you assess your effectiveness as an activities parent.  Allow your child to provide you with feedback regarding his/her perception of your effectiveness.  Be willing to make the necessary changes to ensure you are creating an environment where your child can flourish. How Much Do You Know About On-Line Sites And Apps Your Kids Are Using? Next-generation apps that let user’s text, video chat, shop, and share their pics and videos are attracting teens. Remember My Space? Not so long ago, practically every teen in the world was on it and then many left for Facebook – now Facebook is on the decline with teens. You might be wondering what the new "it" social network is. But the days of a one-stop shop for all social networking needs are over. Instead, teens are dividing their attention between an array of apps and tools that let them write, share, video chat, and even shop for the latest trends. Instagram is a platform that lets users snap, edit, and share photos and 15-second videos – either publicly or with a network of followers. Why it’s popular: Instagram unites the most popular features of social media sites: sharing, seeing, and commenting on photos. Instagram also lets you apply fun filters and effects to your photos, making them look high quality and artistic. What parents need to know: • Teens are on the lookout for "Likes." Similar to Facebook, teens may measure the "success" of their photos – even their self-worth – by the number of likes or comments they receive. Posting a photo or video can be problematic if teens post it to validate their popularity. • Public photos are the default. Photos and videos shared on Instagram are public and may have location information unless privacy settings are adjusted. Hashtags (#) can make photos even more visible to communities beyond a teen's followers. • Inappropriate can and often times slips in. The terms of service specify that users should be at least 13 years old and shouldn't post partially nude or sexually suggestive photos – but they don't address violence, swear words, or drugs. Snapchat is a messaging app that lets users put a time limit on the pictures and videos they send before they disappear. Why it's popular: Snapchat's creators intended the app's fleeting images to be a way for teens to share fun, light moments without the risk of having them go public. And that's what most teens use it for: sending goofy or embarrassing photos to one another. Snapchats also seem to send and load much "faster" than email or text. What parents need to know: • Many schools have yet to block it. • It's a myth that Snapchats go away forever. Data is data: Whenever an image is sent, it never truly goes away. Snapchats can be recovered or saved by another. • It can make sexting seem OK. The seemingly risk-free messaging allows teens to share pictures containing inappropriate content.

Tumblr is like a cross between a blog and Twitter. It's a streaming scrapbook of text, photos, and/or videos and audio clips. Users create and follow short blogs, or "tumblelogs," that can be seen by anyone online (if made public). Why it's popular: Many teens have tumblrs for personal use – sharing photos, videos, musings, and things they find funny with their friends. Tumblelogs with funny memes and gifs often go viral online, as well (case in point: "Texts from Hillary"). What parents need to know: • Porn is easy to find. Pornographic images and videos, depictions of violence, selfharm, drug use, and offensive language are easily searchable and found on this site. • Privacy can be protected, but only through a difficult bypass method. The first profile a member creates is public and viewable by anyone on the Internet. Members who desire full privacy have to create a second profile, which they're able to password protect. Vine is a social media app that lets users post and watch looping six-second video clips. This Twitter-owned service has developed a unique community of people who post videos that are often creative and funny – and sometimes thought-provoking. Why it's popular: Videos run the gamut from stop-motion clips of puzzles doing and undoing themselves to sixsecond skits showing how a teen wakes up on a school day vs. a day during summer. Teens usually use Vine to create and share silly videos of themselves and/or their friends and family. What parents need to know: • It's full of inappropriate videos. Ranging from clips of full-frontal male and female nudity, to kids blowing marijuana smoke into each other's mouths. There's a lot of funny, clever expression on Vine, but much of it isn't appropriate for kids. • There are significant privacy concerns. The videos you post, the accounts you follow, and the comments you make on videos are all public by default. But you can adjust your settings to protect your posts; • Parents can be star performers (without knowing). Pheed is best described as a hybrid of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube – except that you can require others to pay a premium to access your personal channel. Why it's popular: Pheed's multimedia "all in one" offering seems to be capturing teens' attention the most. Some teens also like the fact that they have more control over ownership and copyright since Pheed allows its users to watermark their original content. What parents need to know: • It's hot! According to Forbes, Pheed has swiftly become the No. 1 free social app in the App Store, thanks in large part to teens. • Users can make money. Users can charge others a subscription fee to access their content. Note that a part of all proceeds goes to Pheed. • Privacy updates are in the works. Kids should be aware that their posts are currently public by default and therefore searchable online.

Ask.fm is a social site that lets kids ask questions and answer those posted by other users – sometimes anonymously. Why it's popular: Although there are some friendly interactions on Ask.fm – Q&As about favorite foods or crushes, for example – there are lots of mean comments and some creepy sexual posts. This iffy content is part of the site's appeal for teens. What parents need to know: • Bullying is a major concern. There are reports that the site has been linked to the suicides of several teens. Talk to your teens about cyberbullying and how anonymity can encourage mean behavior. • Anonymous answers are optional. Users can decide whether to allow anonymous posts and can remove their answers from streaming to decrease their profile's visibility. If your teens do use the site, they'd be best turning off anonymous answers and keeping themselves out of the live stream.
