the clothes» (Yaeger, 2018)
His creative genius roots back to his early days. He would already be creating clothes by stitching together leftover fabrics, such as curtains from his house. In 2008 he moved to Paris, where he studied at ESMOD. (Björk, 2016)
A few months later he loses his mother. This was a turning point for the designer. Aged 20 years old, despite the grief and trauma, this encouraged him to start his career.
His early work is kept simple. His lack of resources inclined him towards minimalistic clothes as it was less costly to produce. For the first time in 2012 does Jacquemus get the opportunity to present his work for PFW. With no young emerging creators in the fashion scene at the time, his presence sparked great media attention.
His LVMH prize in 2015 allowed the designer to be the renowned man he is today. His products can be found in worldwide famous stores such as Dover street market London, Les Printemps Paris…
Simon Porte Jacquemus integrates in his work many art references, especially cinematographic ones. Many of his prints are inspired by the universe of Jacques Tati, a French filmmaker of the 80s or Louis Malle, a producer of the 60s.
Aware of Social Media’s potential to build a strong community, the designer is present and active on many platforms. He will personally interact with his followers.
This takes away from the prestigiousness aspect of a luxury brand, which can sometimes feel intimidating.
