Military Makeover Style Guide: Maney Family

Page 21

Military Makeover with Montel® is honored and privileged to present the Maney family renovation on our 33rd season.

Growing up in a close-knit military family, Staff Sergeant Brent Maney’s desire to serve came as no surprise. He enlisted in the United States Air Force as a pararescue in 1994 and was deployed numerous times in the early years of his military career.

In 1998, a serious parachuting accident left him with severe injuries, but after major surgery and a year of physical therapy Brent’s miraculous recovery allowed him to continue to serve as a Pararescue Instructor for 12 years

Throughout his varied military career, Brent played a huge part in supporting NASA space shuttle missions from Trans-Atlantic Abort Landing sites in Morocco and Gambia, as well as teaching Special Operations Forces in combat casualty care at multiple schools, from 1999-2013. Today, Brent still suffers from the aftereffects of his service, dealing with constant back pain, PTSD and Survivor’s guilt.

Brent and his wife, Trudie, have been married for fifteen years. They have two boys, and the family now lives in the city of Melbourne, Florida. Trudie was, unfortunately, diagnosed with advanced young onset Parkinson’s disease in 2007 and her deteriorating health has been a huge challenge for the entire family. In 2020, she was diagnosed with early onset dementia which requires Brent to be her daily caregiver

The home holds significance for the family as Trudie has chosen it to be the house, she would like to spend her final years in Though all members of the Maney family have gone through their own sets of trials and tribulations, they are still able to find the joy to succeed in their everyday lives Military Makeover is honored to present the Maneys as the recipients of this season’s makeover

We invite you to look through this Style Guide and watch the Maney Family season to see how we transformed their home with the help of our generous partners.

“Hi everyone!

I'm Jennifer Bertrand, the master designer on Military Makeover. I think design, life, and fashion should be fun!

For this makeover, it was all about blending “his” and “her” style. Brent loved coastal elements, the beach, surfing, pretty blues and whites. Trudie loved the mountains of New Mexico.

Do these styles go together? Yes! They can, if you take care of color.

In this home, we created a foundation of white to have a clean surface. After we had the base of the home, we added furniture and decor that had color and Aztec patterns.

Who says you must be afraid of color? You can add color and not look crazy…It's about having fun!”

LIVING ROOM

Whendesigning the perfect living room for the Maney family, Designer Jennifer wanted to incorporate both his (Brent Maney) and her (Trudie Maney) styles Trudie’s style is inspired by the mountains of New Mexico, while Brent loves coastal elements Talk about a contrast in taste!

For any designer, combining these very different styles can be a challenge; but Jennifer always manages to pull it off! The living room space has a great balance of Brent and Trudie’s style.

DINING ROOM The

dining room is a gathering space for the Maney family to decompress from the day while sharing a meal together. Our Master Designer, Jennifer, chose to brighten up the dining room to make the area seem larger. The open shelving bookcases were given a fresh coat of paint in a calming blue to represent the colors of the ocean that Brent Maney loves

Sometimes when it comes to renovating a home, it’s all about repurposing Maybe you have great pieces in your home, but not in the right spaces! Jennifer wanted to make sure that she did not lose nostalgic artwork from Spain and décor in the Maney home that the family loved This room represents a perfect blend of something new and something cherished.

KITCHEN

TheManeys have always viewed theirs as the “world’s worst kitchen” and they were ready to get this area gutted! When Jennifer got her hands on it, so many ideas came to mind from function to design. She selected a blue tile backsplash that had depth and white marble countertops to make it feel sleek The kitchen was decked out with all stainless-steel appliances, thanks to our dedicated partners on Military Makeover.

HOME GYM

Designer

Jennifer created the home gym to give the Maney family, and especially Trudie, the perfect place to relax. In the gym, Trudie will be able to use the exercise bike gifted by Ready Capital The exercise bike will increase Trudie’s mobility and lessen the symptoms that comes with Parkinson’s disease. Fujitsu installed a cooling system to create a calm and chilling environment

was the number one thing on our minds, when deciding how to reinvent Trudie’s bathroom. Living with Parkinson's makes it hard for her to move and stand with ease, which is why we wanted to create a bathroom that would make it hassle free when it came time for Trudie to use it.

OFFICE

Brent

knew going into this makeover that one of the things he was looking for was a home office, and Jennifer hit the nail right on the head. She was able to completely transform their spare bedroom into the office Brent was looking for. And with it completely matching his love for coastal vibes and personal touches, we don’t think he will ever want to leave.

LAUNDRY ROOM Trudie

is limited with her disease, but one point of joy for her is doing laundry.

The Laundry Room is a place where she can operate and feel good about contributing to the household.

GSM was able to build a partition wall between the laundry room and garage to create a private space that is nice for her to work in.

THE MANEY PALETTE: WATCHING COLOR THEORY COME TO LIFE

If you’ve ever heard of Baker-Miller Pink, also known as P618, you are probably familiar with the true power of color This is the ultimate example of how colors have an extreme effect on our emotions, moods, and lives.

Baker-Miller Pink took the world by storm in the 1980s when it was discovered that it could be used to calm, physically relax, and weaken aggressive behavior. For example, sports teams would paint their opponent’s locker rooms in this shade of pink in order to stifle their competitiveness and throw them off their game.

Now, people use color theory to choose the colors they want present in their homes After all, colors are light, therefore, colors are energy.

But energy is sensitive. It changes based on what’s going on around it Does the room have lots of windows? Is all the furniture gray and beige? These are things to consider when choosing the right color for your home.

When picking a color to paint the walls of your home, consider the existing components of the space Then, go from there Certain colors complement each other you’ll be surprised about some of the color combos that fit together!

The Maney family wanted to figure out how to blend the teals and blues from Brent’s love of the coast, with Trudie’s adobe clay and russet color shades, reminiscent of the mountains of New Mexico. These palettes sound like they would clash if stitched together in a space Yet, our designer Jennifer Bertrand, made it work!

It is evident that pale blues and clay tones work swimmingly together in the Maney family home

A surfboard was hung above a bronze-colored couch with pillows that had blue accents in a soft, white room In the same room, there was a dark blue grid-patterned chair with pillows that were inspired by Trudie’s New Mexico aesthetic.

The pops of color against the white walls were a fantastic contrast The same goes for the kitchen where Jennifer paired white cabinets with two-toned oceanic blue tile and a marble white counter all in the same space. It was a beautiful color combination

Believe it or not, we can use colors to access certain parts of ourselves that we only see once in a blue moon. (No pun intended.) For example, have you noticed that when you are out in nature, encompassed by all the deep greens, rustic browns, and pale blue sky, you’re in a completely different world? You feel a sense of freedom, or even gain perspective being surrounded by the wide spectrum of color. Well, you can bring these emotions into your home!

Colors shouldn’t scare you. Instead, you must use color to your advantage. Choose the colors that make you feel inspired, and you’ll be golden! (Pun totally intended.)

“Overall, for me this experience has been humbling. I used to say that ‘one of these days we are going to win the lottery,’ and this is it. I’ve worked in my career around a lot of different teams, in all branches of service, some very elite teams, and I whole heartedly mean this… that the Military Makeover team, the cast and the crew, down to every single person who worked on this have been very professional. Very mindful of Trudie’s needs, my needs, and my family’s needs. And it is so apparent to me that everybody on the team genuinely cares about what they are doing for our family and any families in the future.”
